Wireless AP coverage area of 1042

I've been tasked with deploying a new wirelss LAN for a call center in the
Philippines. I've considered going with a the 1042 10 pack and a 2112 wireless controller, in the hopes that 2 AP's per floor would be sufficient. Can anyone tell me what a conservative estimate on the square footage that a single 1042 can cover is? I understand that walls and electromagnetic feilds can cause interferece and affect signal strength, but is there a good rule of thumb for determining AP coverage range?

I wouldn't recommend the 2100. I'd consider the newer WLC2504 to support up to 50 APs.

Depends on the layout of the location. I was born and raised in the Philippines so I know what the constructions of the walls and buildings are like. Buildings like hallow or cinder blocks. Newer buildings have pre-fabricated, post-tensioning walls. It's very rare to find mult-storey buildings with plywood walls. Because of the walls, wireless signals tend to get absorbed.
What is the size (l x w x h) of the floors?
How many users are you expecting to use?
What about PoE of your APs?
What is your switch infrastructure? FastEthernet or GigabitEthernet?
Types of wireless traffic expected?
Why use the 1040 instead of the 3500?

I would tell you about my experience with an AP with external antenna 2.2 dbi:
It covers about 50+ meters (about 160 feets) in free space with acceptable coverage. You may also still get weak signal when you go further than that but it is not reliable and could get disconnected at any time.
in a cubig zone the AP could be reachable up to 30 meters ( about 100 feets) only [more or less depending on furniture and material there].
It also depends on the transmission power level at which your AP broadcasts the signal. In my prevoius explanation the highest power level is assumed.

No Data Plan for you if you are not in AT&T coverage area

We have great iPhone coverage here at home, but it is AT&T partner coverage. When I tried to sign up for a data plan on my new iPad 3g, AT&T would not accept the billing address that I have used with AT&T for years. When I called AT&T, they said "We're sorry, you should have known that and not bought a 3g iPad." Although you may use the data service all over the United States, if your home is not in the AT&T coverage area, no data plan for you! Apple has been no help so far either. The only solution I see in the short term is to get a credit card at a relative's address who is in a coverage area.
If anyone knows a work around, I would appreciate some advice...

1. Most credit cards do not allow you to change your address to one outside of your country. Again, most, but not all. (The reason isn't nefarious or anything, it's just that it's credit laws vary by country, and your Canadian Bank might not be able to sue you in the US if you decide to quit paying your bills.)
2. AT&T Wireless is a US company (thought it probably has businesses in some other countries). Again, for credit reasons and probably Apple restricting markets as they should, it's probably not going to work.
3. The iPad is the ultimate travel device. It's a US product for US users, so not being able to get a data plan from a US company because you're Canadian, does not lessen it's usefulness. I'm sure it will be launched in Canada soon, and you'll be able to use it with Rogers or whatever network you have up there. Maybe it will be cheaper.
Go watch some hockey for 3 or 4 weeks, and I'm sure it will be in Canada officially! And I'm not being snarky, because I'm loving the Canadiens right now.

Poor 3g reception issue does not come from being in a low coverage area.

For All of you who keep saying that "If youre in a low coverage area the 3g service wont work you must turn off 3g". That is not a solution. Yes it fixes the problem of not being able to talk on the phone but that is just a workaround that in my opinion is not acceptable. The name of the phone is iPhone 3g. The entire reason for buying this phone is the 3g network. If thats not there and frankly who cares about the GPS as its pretty much useless, then we could have kept our old phones. There are numerous reports of people using their old devices with 3g side by side and getting great reception on their other handset. In my opinion there is a problem with this phone and it should probably be returned until apple figures out what they did wrong. Its not the 3g network and its not a lack of coverage as other handsets are getting great reception. ITS THE PHONE!!!

I removed all of the interface methods and set those properties and it still
didn't work.
I also have a custom skin on this class. I removed that and tabbing started
to work again.
Is there any good advise on how to prevent my skin from having effect on the
group within the container? I've seen a good bit about focus and skins, but
nothing about skins on a container? all the skin has is replacements for the
header bar and the close button.

Does the network extender work in "extended coverage" areas?

We are going to be at a cabin in a rural area that is in "extended 3G" / "extended digital coverage" according to the verizon coverage map (a few miles east of Arnold, CA).
As the cabin has internet (we go there every summer), will the network extender work given that it's in an extended coverage area? I usually get 0 bars when I am at the cabin and it would be nice to be able to make/receive calls on the cell phone without having to drive into town several miles away.

Clients roaming in and out of coverage area

Hi,
I am currently getting reports from my user base that they are having to re-authenticate every 5 min's. They claim this is happening when using our visitor network which is a webauth based setup with a 4 hour session time out. My thinking on this is that the user is roaming in and out of our coverage areas and thus having to reauthorise sooner than expected.
2 questions on this...
1. Does this sound like a likely explanation.
2. Is there any setting I can change to increase the timeout length that will allow a user to wonder in and out of the coverage area before being required to re-authenticate?

There are two timers especially if you use WebAuth.... The most important especially if the guest users are Apple devices, is the idle timer. This should be set to 2-4 hours depending... I usually set this to 2 hours so guest can grab lunch and don't have to login. The session timer is a hard timer and if you have that set to 4 hours, then every 4 hours they will have to login. The idle timer has to be set lower than the session.

Have an issue, that if my phone will not log onto the cellular network after a an hour or so of being in a network blackspot/no coverage area.
Will not log back on, in a know good coverage area, untill i do a reboot or a 'flight mode on/off'.
Swapped phone, swapped SIM, and on the Optus Network in Australia.
Any ideas??

There is no problem with your iPhone. It just doesnt update cause maybe it still is searching. Maybe there is a small enough signal present that the phone just constantly tries to connect. If you have never gotten a signal in your home, just keep it on airplane mode if it bothers you.

Coverage area and perimeter

I don´t understand very well the difference between coverage area and perimeter in the WCS Map Editor.
I only want that APs coverage offer service inside the building and then avoid that a person can connects when he is outside the building.
To do it, What I have to do? I have to draw a coverage area inside the building or perimeter, or both?

Hi, thx for your reply. I played with the Planner, defining one large Perimeter and 4 Coverage Areas inside, excluding one Inner Area. The Planner dont worry about that, he plans for the full Area. Regards, Michael

Coverage Area Dashboard NCS Version 1.3

We have had an issue since the implementation of the NCS last year. We have upgraded twice hoping the problem will be resolved in the updates. We're currently on 1.3.0.20.
If AP's go down, then come back up. The critical alarm indicator on the Coverage area dashboard will not clear. If you click on the critical alarm, the message comes up, "no data available." Restarting the NCS will clear the "false alarms"
I have had a TAC case open for quite a few days, and have had it requeued, but once they see the issue, they say they have to review the logs and get back to me.
Has anyone experienced this. I can't imagine we're the only ones having this issue.

Alarms not clearing sounds like bug CSCug61312, even though the language of this bug leans toward rogue alarms. The issue has more to do with "up" events not being processed correctly. It wouldn't hurt to keep an eye on CSCug61312.
In the meantime, if you haven't added the new PI_1.3.0.20_Update_1-12.tar.gz patch to your 1.3.0.20 installation, you would do well to.

My airport express and wireless airplay speaker are connected to WIFI, but airplay and homesharing are not working...what to do? Everything was working fine until about two weeks ago, all of the sudden airplay has disappeared from the iphone, itunes on the laptop, and the apple remote for iphone. I have restarted the router many times, re-setup the airplay speaker and the airport express and booth are showing as being properly connected to the router when I log into the router IP address. I was on the phone with Apple support for 30 minutes they blames verizon, got on the phone with verizon and they stated the settings were all correct and compatible with apple, got back on the phone with apple and they again are blaming verizon and trying to get me to get an airport extreme because that would fix the problem...any suggestions, please!

There are three Airport resets, soft, hard and factory default. It would probably be beneficial if you tried each one in sequence. Actually, you could jump to the factory default reset if you don't mind reconfiguring from scratch.

Manually Updating my coverage area

Hi, I just updated my vzaccess successfully, but once I start running it, it reminds me that a area coverage update is available. Every time I tell it to update, it always comes back update failed. I notice that the connection constantly switches from 1x to Mobil Broadband (EV-Rev A). When it's on 1X, its slower than molasses in January. We have 3 Droid 2's and my DroidX and 95% of the time we pull in 3G, why wont the mifi update and stay connected to the high speed? It has been forever since I was able to successfully update the Area Coverage. I know for a while Verizon pushed through a hybrid PRL that I think made it connect to a Alltel tower or something. But 6 month later or so they said it was OK to go through the activation process that everything is hybrid. After several attempts, I was able to get it to update. But that was like a year ago. Is there someway I can manually update the PRL or coverage area manually. I live in Wyocena, WI if that will help me get the right PRL. Thanks, Jammindog
