Wireless Backup / data storage - Is this possible ?

Folks
I'm using a Netgear DG834GT wireless router/modem to access broadband internet here in the UK with my Powerbook.
If I buy a Network harddrive and plug this into the Netgear router will I be able to access the harddrive 'wirelessly' ?
Anyone got any experience of this ?

Yes, it is possible. I have a Buffalo LinkStation 250 G/B NAS connected to a LinkSys 8 port 10/100 Hub that also connects to my Airport Base and also to my Windows 2K (ugh) workstation.
I can access this NAS both from my PB and PC. I must admit however, it is dreadfully slow trying to backup anything via wireless.
When I want to do serious backups, I run an ethernet cable from my PB to the LinkSys hub so that I can backup at ethernet speed.

  • Older MacBook Pro as a Wireless Backup Drive?

    I just got a new MacBook Pro and want to use my old one as a wireless backup drive. Is this possible? I'd backup only user files and skip the music and photos. If so, how do I set it up and what are my options for wireless backup software?

    If the router is wireless then you don't need Ethernet. Enable File Sharing on one or both computers so you can copy files from one to the other over your wireless network.
    You cannot use SuperDuper! because it cannot backup to a networked device. However, any of these should work:
    Backup Software Recommendations
    1. Retrospect Desktop (Commercial)
    2. Synchronize! Pro X (Commercial)
    3. Synk (Backup, Standard, or Pro)
    4. Deja Vu (Shareware)
    5. Carbon Copy Cloner (Donationware)
    6. Intego Personal Backup (Commercial)
    7. Data Backup (Commercial)
    8. SilverKeeper 2.0 (Freeware)
    9. Tri-Backup (Commercial)
    Visit The XLab FAQs and read the FAQ on backup and restore. Also read How to Back Up and Restore Your Files.
    And, the Restore option of Disk Utility for full disk cloning. Apple's Backup 3 also will work but requires a MobileMe account.

  • Comparing two Date values in ActionScript - possible to compare whole day values?

    I need to be able to compare the number of whole days between two dates in ActionScript, is this possible?
    I'd like to test if one date is 7 days or less after today, and if so is it one day or less (if it's before today this also counts).
    The workaround I have in place is using the .time part of the date field:
    // Get the diffence between the current date and the due date
    var dateDiff:Date = new Date();
    dateDiff.setTime (dueDate.time - currentDate.time);
    if (dateDiff.time < ( 1 * 24 * 60 * 60 * 1000 ))
    return "Date is within 1 day");
    else if (dateDiff.time < ( 7 * 24 * 60 * 60 * 1000 ))
    return "Date is within 7 days");
    As I say - this is only a workaround, I'd like a permanent solution to allow me to check the number of whole days between 2 dates. Is this possible?
    Thanks

    I think this is the solution
    var daysDifference:Number = Math.floor((dueDate.time-currentDate.time)/(1000*60*60*24));
    if (daysDifference < 2)
    return new ClassFactory(DataGridRedRenderer);
    else if (daysDifference < 8)
    return new ClassFactory(DataGridOrangeRenderer);
    else
    return new ClassFactory(DefaultGridItemRenderer);

  • Wireless backup possible?

    Is there a way to wirelessly backup files? I'm opening a new office and have 4 terminals and need to have their data backed up and would like to do so wirelessly...is this possible?

    A network hard drive is one possibility. Other options are to use another Mac as the designated backup destination, or to buy a Mac mini and use it for this purpose.
    As for plugging it into an Airport Express - that is likely not an option. The Airport Express USB port can only be used for printers (you cannot plug a USB hard drive into it). The Airport Express has only one ethernet port, which is going to be used to cable the device to your cable/DSL modem or existing network so it too is unavailable. The only condition under which the Airport Express could be used is if you cable a network hard drive to its ethernet port, and you then configure the Airport Express as a remote base station in a wireless distribution system (WDS) which presupposes that you have an existing wireless network based around another Airport Express or an Airport Extreme Base Station.

    Unfortunately, I lost by an update all the apps on my iPad 2. Now I can not pull the data from the cloud to my iPad. How is this possible?

    If you just installed iCloud does that mean you updated the iOS that's running on your iPad?  If so, you'll want to restore all the programs you have from the backup you hopefully made.
    Refer to these articles for help.

    If you don't want to use iCloud, simply don't activate it.
    You can also download the programs again.

    You won't be able to restore a device running iOS 4.2 from a backup of a device running iOS 5 (as you found out).  And the Iphone 3G can only be updated to iOS 4.2.1 so there is no way to migrate from his iPhone 4 back to his iPhone 3G.  He would have to at least have an iPhone 3GS, which will update to iOS 5.1 and would be able to restore from the iPhone 4 backup.  Unfortunately, there isn't any way around it.

    There are no contacts in itunes.
    Your contact should be on your computer in whatever program you have selected to sync.  Just sync them to the new one.
    Click Support at the top of this page, then click manuals
    Changing the itunes account on nthe iphone is covered there as is restoring the iphone as new or from backup.

  • I want to use my airport time capsule as a network attached storage solution, is this possible or do I need to connect a separate hard drive?

    I want to use my airport time capsule as a network attached storage solution, is this possible or do I need to connect it to a separate hard drive?

    The Time Capsule is by default a network hard drive, but it has no "brains" of it's own. So, it cannot function as a stand alone media server if that is what you are asking.
    If you are also using the Time Capsule hard drive for Time Machine backups of your Mac(s), then there may be struggle for available space on the drive since it is not possible to partition the Time Capsule drive in a traditional manner.
    If space is getting tight on the Time Capsule, it might be a good idea to connect a drive to the USB port on the Time Capsule and use that drive for your network storage needs.

  • Lost Mode and Play Sound are "Pending."  However, iCloud indicates that it connected and backed up to iCloud at a date that is 1 week after it went missing.  How is this possible without locking (Lost Mode Pending an internet connection)

    Hi,
    My wife lost her iPhone two weeks ago while on vacation in London (cell service inoperative in foreign country).  Using Find My iPhone app on my device, I activated Lost Mode and Play Sound.  However, both are listed as "Pending," since it those actions require the phone to connect to the internet (wifi only due to no cellular data coverage.).
    We recently returned home and purchased a new iPhone.
    However, when looking to restore the apps/settings from her old phone using a previous iCloud backup, iCloud indicates that the old phone connected to iCloud and backed up the original phone at a date that is 1 week after it went missing.  How is this possible without locking (Lost Mode Pending an internet connection)?
    If the phone was activated and connected to the internet via a wifi signal, shouldn't it immedately lock, show up on the map, Play Sound, and send me an email that the phone has been found?
    I also read somewhere that if running iOS 7, the iCloud website interface enables you to track previous locations, for instance if the phone moves from wifi hotspot to hotspot.  Is that true?  If so, how do I do that?
    Thank you for your time, and have a great day!
    Sincerely,
    - Matt

    Is what you're saying that you only want backups in TM of the state of your Mac from January 2015 to the current date and nothing before then? I'd think the simplest solution would just be to delete in TM all the backups prior to 1/15 and then let TM do its thing. The ultimate source for all things Time Machine is here. On this page, note the comment that "Time Machine will never delete the backup copy of anything that was on the disk being backed-up at the time of any remaining backup" which I understand to mean that if you delete all the backups in the TM file prior to 1/15, any file that wasn't present on your Mac as of 1/15 will no longer be represented in the TM file. Note that the second link also has instructions for how to delete TM files.
    If you were trying to accomplish something else, then as Emily Litella (Gilda Radner in SNL) used to say, "never mind."
