Wireless Backup to External Hard Drive

Home network: iMac (Snow Leopard), Wireless Printer, Vigor 2800 Wireless Router, 2 Seagate USB Ext Hard Drives.
I wish to add Seagate hard drives to wireless network and use Time Machine for B/Up. They are currently wired directly to Mac.
I have tried PogoPlug but it doesn't support Time Machine. Someone suggested Airport Extreme as one solution even though I don't need a router / modem.
Would this be the best solution at economical cost?
If yes, would an older model of AE do the job?
Thanks

ksimac, Bob T is the guru of this topic and I would not disagree with his advice, but, for the sake of completeness, I have to say that the path suggested to you will work. There are many of us who have gone for some version of that and we are very happy. The total cost will come in at less than the TC.
On the other hand, there are many, many others for whom it doesn't work at all, or, worse, works for a while, then suddenly the backups turn up corrupted with no warning. Sometimes they can be repaired with Disk Utility, sometimes with Disk Warrior, but usually the only option is to erase and start over.
In my case, it worked perfectly for about 3 months; then turned up corrupted every few days for a couple of weeks; then worked fine for several more months, and came up corrupted again just the other day. That's with exactly the same hardware in exactly the same location.
There are many, many threads in this forum (and the Leopard and Snow Leopard Time Machine forums) with similar scenarios.
And if there's a problem, you'll get no help from Apple, since it's +*not supported.+* See Using Time Machine with an Airport Extreme Air Disk (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of this forum).
As noted, if you still want to do this, by all means make regular secondary backups of some sort. Otherwise you may have no backups when you need them the most.
Also, there are several reports of premature expiration experiences of the TC.
Yes, some of the first generation Time Capsules (circa early 2008) had power supply problems; Apple replaces them at no charge: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3351
Recent models seem to be much better.

I am trying to get Time Machine to backup my external hard drive.  I have the external drive formated as Mac OS Extended (journaled) and I have also removed the drive from the Excluded list.  I put some 'test' files on the external drive and told TM to do a backup and when it is finished the only way I can see my external hard drive in TM is if it is connected to the computer.  It doesn't seem to be backed up anywhere in TM that I can see.  Please Help

My computer was totally destroyed & I do not have backup or external hard drive with my saved iTunes library from it. That was the only computer authorized to play library. I do not have an iPod or iPhone with any of that library (which has over $2K in music purchases & over 5K in songs I ripped). Will I be able to access my iTunes library when I purchase a new computer?

You should be able to access your past iTunes purchases. You'll need to re-rip your CDs See: HT2519 - Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store.

  • Time Machine Backup of external hard drive connected to IMAC

I have an external hard drive connected to my IMAC. I also have a 2TB Time Capsule connected to my network. I store all of my video (both events and projects from imovie) to the external hard drive to save space on the IMAC. Does the Time Capsule backup this external hard drive? When I open Time Machine I don't see where the external hard drive is backed up? The drive is formatted MAC OS extended (journaled).

    nujac,
Time Machine backs up all locally attached drives unless you specifically exclude them in System Prefenences > Time Machine > Options.. icon.
You should be able to see this in Finder, enter TM and highlight the external drive. Click back to a prior date. Sometimes it takes a little while to fully populate the display since it's reading across the network, give it a few minutes.

  • How to backup an external hard drive plugged into a time capsule using time machine

How to backup an external hard drive plugged into a time capsule using time machine.
I want to move my itunes library from the mac HD to an external plugged into the time capsule, but I want to be sure this drive will still be backed up by time machine.  I currentlly see no way to do this.

There is no way. You can connect the drive to your Mac and remove it from the Time Machine exclusion list. Then it will be backed up, but that will stop when you reconnect it to the TC. While it's connected to the TC, you can copy it manually to another AirPort Disk by following the instructions here (with a slight modification):
Using AirPort Utility to make a copy of the Time Capsule disk

  • Does Time Machine backup other external hard drives?

I am using a Seagate 500 GB to backup my data. Will Time Machine backup another external hard drive on which I store my iMovie projects? If so, how do I access them in the Time Machine mode? Thanks in advance.

    nachdenki wrote:
strange, my external HDs were added to the exception list automatically. maybe because they wouldn't fit on the time machine volume.
It seems to depend on when the drives were connected. When you first turn Time Machine on, it only excludes the TM drive itself, and any drives not formatted HFS+.
If you connect a drive later on, that drive will be excluded automatically.

  • Unsual question about backup to external hard drive

    Hi,
I have a large iTunes library on my laptop (+140GB). My hard drive is running out of space. I am planning on backing up my music and everything in iTunes to a backup 2TB external hard drive. I know how to do this but I like to tweek it a little: I want to be able to back up all my files to the external drive AND then delete some of the less-used songs on my internal drive. BUT i want to keep them in the external hard drive! Is this possible?
I know I am probably not clear, so please let me know.
    Thanks,

I'd normally suggest this method for backing up.
You should always keep at least two copies of any file you don't want to lose.

  • Using time machine as backup AND external hard drive?

So I got the Time Machine so I could use it as a wireless external hard drive. Thought my computer just crashed and realized i realllly need a backup.... is there any way that I could back up my computer on it WITHOUT erasing my 100,000's of photos on the time capsule? Please be POSITIVE they wont erase.

My hard drive is about full. Its full of photoshop and rosetta stone stuff and I just would rather not loose it all if my computer were to crash (think 140GB).
As posted earlier, your best bet for that is a larger internal HD.
I just want one backup, maybe one that automatically backs itself up ever month/week and REPLACES the old one. Not looking for the time machine to work as it normally does, saving every backup it can. Looking to use the time CAPSULE as a backup, to save one copy at a time. Although not necessary, it would be nice to have it automatically REPLACE that ONE copy.
If you're going to have a backup of your system, you might as well use Time Machine. It's most recent backup is, in effect, a full backup of everything. If you let it do it's hourly backups, you'll never lose more than an hour of data.
You might want to review these:

and perhaps browse the Time Machine - Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of the +Time Machine+ forum.
Yes, there are other backup apps; many won't back up to a network drive (such as a Time Capsule).

  • Backup an external hard drive connected to Airport -- is this possible?

Currently I have a hub connected to my airport extreme. There are 2 external hard drives connected to the hub. One has my iTunes library on it, and the other is being used for time machine backups.
I have no problem doing the backup wirelessly to the one hard drive. In time machine, I could pick either external drive to back up to. What I am trying to do is back up the external drive too. Time machine is only seeing the hard drive on my laptop. The exclude list is blank and when I try to add the itunes HD to the exclude list (to remove it), it won't let me select it-- it is greyed out.
If I connect the itunes HD directly into my laptop, I can run the backup, but that is not very convenient. Is what I am trying to do possible? Does anyone have any ideas? Are there any other posts discussing this (I could not find any with my specific problem).
    Thanks!

That's correct. Time Machine will not back up a network drive (see #2 in the Frequently Asked Questions *User Tip* at the top of this forum).
You're going to need a different app. Which one will depend on where you want the backups to go; some apps will not back-up from a network drive; others won't back up to a network drive. I don't know, offhand, of any that will do both. Perhaps Kappy, V.K., or others will.
For backups to a local disk, try either CarbonCopyCloner (which I use to make a full bootable "clone" in addition to Time Machine), and I think SuperDuper will do this as well. CCC is donationware, so you can try it for a while, then send them some $$ so they can keep it current. It can be scheduled to run automatically, and you have the choice of it keeping only current copies or to archive prior versions as well. SuperDuper has a free version, but you need the paid one (about $30) to do scheduling. I don't know if it will keep archive copies.
There are many other backup apps, some of which will handle network drives. Check Google, VersionTracker.com, or MacUpdate.com.

  • Wireless NAS/TV, External Hard Drive

This is my first post, so thanks in advance for any help!
I have just purchased an MacBook Air 13", and am looking for some advice on home networking/external hard drives etc...
On my old Windows Laptop I would download a film using a Torrent, copy it to a flash USB stick, insert into TV, and then watch.
Now I would very much like to be able to do all of this wirelessly (if possible).
Ideally - I would like to be able to automatically save all of my downloaded films to a folder that isn't on my MBA, whether this is an external hard drive or Time Capsule etc etc. and then access that folder via my TV, so I don't have to do any transferring, moving, unplugging etc.
    Is this possible?
I don't mind a USB cable going from the hard drive (or whatever) to the TV and this being permanently connected, I would just like to be able to download a film, it to be saved somewhere else not local to the MBA automatically without having to drag and drop it, and then accessed instantly on the TV, to confuse matters further my router (Tesco Broadband - Thompson) does not have any USB slots on it, only Ethernet.
Can anyone recommend a way of doing this (if possible)? And any products (Looking for about 1TB storage)
    Thanks
    Chris

  • My Time Machine stalls during initial backup on external hard drive even after several hours.

We have been using Time Machine and an external hard drive to back up our MacBook for almost a year now.  Recently, the hard drive (using a USB) was removed without ejecting it properly.  After that, the auto backups began stalling.  We tried setting up Time Machine all over again but the initial back up stalls at different places (like 6MB of 87GB) even if it's left for several hours overnight.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this?  If not, can anyone suggest another inexpensive way of backing up our files from our MacBook?
    Thanks!

It might have created a new user and loaded under that.. new user being the old user. But if you have issues do it again, only this time pick where the backup will go.

The other questions might also be relevant as a new hard disk will make the Mac appear to the TM backup as a new computer.

  • I recently updated to Mountain lion 10.8 . I backuped using external hard drive using time machine . I used Lacie drive. I had to format it MAC OSX " extended journaled" before I could back up my dat and after that I backed it up.

    1) I cant seem to restore my data back from Time machine as many files seem Locked. I cant use the Migration app since it doesnt show me my external hard drive when I try to use it. Plus Ive heard that Migration app copies whole drives rather than selecting and copying some folders/data.
    2) Even if i use the time machine to restore the data , It does copy on to my mac but that locked symbol is still there .
    3) I have read that my drive wont show on migration application cuz the OS should be same before and after the backup and there shouldnt be any difference , otherwise the migration app wont show the drive. This is absurd cuz mostly ppl back up because they want to upgrade their computers . It will never be the same , I mean the OSX , cuz after i have done the back there would have been an upgrade .
Can anyone help Linc Davis .
