Wireless/blue tooth installation in a Power Mac G5 bought in August 2004

I have a power mac G5 2.0, bought in August 2004 and it did not come with wireless or bluetooth. I would like to install it now but all the cards that I see advertised are for G5's made after October 2005. If someone has a part number for what I need it would be much appreciated. Also if anyone has a part number for a Gforce video card with 128/256MB that will work in this unit could they post it. like to up grade the Gforce 5200 while I am at it.

Hi, and a Warm Welcome to Apple Discussions and the Power Mac G5 Forum!
The Bluetooth card and antenna as a kit, including the screws, is shown here
http://www.mac-pro.com/s.nl/it.A/id.1515/.f?sc=2&category=180
The Bluetooth installation instructions are here
http://tersus.no/bluetooth/
The Airport Extreme! card is available here (and elsewhere, no doubt)
http://www.mac-pro.com/Apple-AirPort-Extreme-Card?sc=2&category=22
The installation instructions are here
http://www.info.apple.com/usen/cip/pdf/g5/apec_c.pdf
The G5 should have the antenna wiring for Airport and Bluetooth already in place; the Airport antenna
http://www.welovemacs.com/9226043.html
should have come in the box with the G5, originally.
You can compare the performance of alternative graphics cards here
http://www.barefeats.com/rad4x.html
and elsewhere on that site. The graphics card slot on your G5 is AGP - and card should be a 'Mac' version.
Getting your hands on one is another matter; there are links to suggested suppliers at the end of Barefeats comparisons; there are some listed here

Best to check availability by phone. Good Luck.

  • What kind of wireless card I need for my Power Mac G5 (late 2005) Dual 2 GH

    hi there,
I have for sometime now a "Power Mac G5 (late 2005) Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5", and recently I have been thinking to get an Airport extreme wireless card with a bluetooth on it, which could work on my machine.
I have already try to deal with apple representatives and Apple sales people to give me a hand on the matter and so far is been a nightmare to approach this guys, tired of wasting time and effort, so that is way I am posting a topic on this section to see if you guys could give a hand on the matter.
All what I would like to know is what kind of wireless card I need for my Power Mac G5 (late 2005) Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5 (version 10.4.11) and where I could buy one on line to install myself.
This is the mac unit I have.
    Dual 2 GHz PowerPC G5.

    Thanks for you time.

You're welcome. Funny how Apple works isn't it? If it's any consolation, that Airport/Bluetooth card doesn't show up on the Apple U.S. store either. I don't think they ever intended it to be a user installable part, so perhaps that's why they don't offer it for sale. Do you have any Apple Authorized Service providers in your area? I'd think they'd be able to order the card as a replacement part.
Can you give a little more detail or a link to the gadget you're referring to? It sounds like a USB dongle to enable Wi-Fi, but that must be a third party solution, since I don't believe Apple ever offered something like that.

  • Linksys Wireless Card (Linksys Router) in G4 Power Mac works fine until...

Linksys Wireless Card (Linksys Router) in G4 Power Mac works fine until...
new software upgrades on the 14 August 2006 (yesterday) which includes Airport 4.2.
The Linksys wireless PCI card (WMP54G) was installed just under a year ago with no problems. There was no need to install drivers, the Apple Mac recognised it and used it as a wireless card. I was browsing the internet last night (14 August) and the software updates downloaded in the background. Once it finished downloading, it requested for a re-start. I carried on browing the internet and then switched off my machine and went to bed.
When I turned on my computer in the morning, the wireless card no longer activates. The computer recognises there is a card but there is no connection to the router (meaning no internet). The router settings have not changed at all.
I believe it could be the Airport 4.2 update has interfered with the Linksys Card, but I'm not sure. I've been through all the Assist functions etc and there is no luck. It does seem that the big update released on the 14th August has played its part.
Any opinions and assistance on getting the card back to normal, and if possible assistance in removing the new updates to previous drivers/settings.
    Thanks people.

Sorry, I do not have a solution for you but I have the same problem upgrading from Jaguar to Panther (on my home machine not listed which is a G3 b&w). Now my WMP54G doesn't see any wireless network (I used to be able to see several in the 'hood), and Apple Profiler recognizes the card. Apple updater changed the Airport system files, I believe.
Is it possible to find the old Airport software and install over current system to get it working again? I doubt Apple still offers the old airport software, but if someone has it, maybe it can be installed with Pacifist.
We need some wireless help here, community.

  • Airport card installation for 2005 Power Mac G5

OK guys, I'm trying to get an airport card to work on my 2005 Power Mac G5. Here's the relevant info:
Power Mac G5 running on Mac OS X 10.4.11
Machine model: PowerMac7,3 (so this would be "early 2005" I guess?)
Airport card: M8881LL/A AirPort Extreme Card
I installed the card as described from the Apple Support site. It seemed to go in fine and I did hook up the antenna wire to the card and an actual antenna is attached to the back of the computer.
When I fired it back up, the computer still can't find the AirPort card. If I open AirPort Setup Assistant (from utilities) it says Airport hardware was not found.
Any chance there is some kind of driver or other missing software I need? Any suggestions?

  • Every 10 seconds, the window on my Mac Air (bought in August) blinks, like it's refreshing. It becomes bothersome, because if I "right click" the tabs disappear or if I'm highlighting a long passage, it is interrupted. How can I fix this?

The blinking/refreshing ONLY occurs on the main window that I am looking at, the other windows are normal.

Try deleting the /Home/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist file then relaunch the Finder.

  • Adding Wireless to my Power Mac G5 (Late 2005) - Can anybody help?

    Hi all,
I was wondering if somebody could help me add a wireless connection to my Power Mac.
Firstly, is the MAXPower 802.11n/g/b Wireless PCI Adapter compatible with my Power Mac G5 (Late 2005)? The fact that my Mac has PCI Express slots makes me think it isn't compatible. There's also a USB version of the MAXPower Wireless Adapter, but I have a feeling this won't work as good as the PCI version.
Secondly, can anybody recommend another way to get wireless connectivity working with my Mac?
    Regards,
    Daniel Cesana

hey... i just got done going through this same issue...
basically, if you are capable of spending about $235 + S/H you can get the card that was supposed to come with our G5's. otherwise... stay away from the usb emulators because they seem to have power issues and mde some of my other usb components drop out... all worked fine when i unplugged the usb adapter?!?!
    card
that is part the combo card... there is another one that plugs in on top. our towers came with the internal antenna so the external one is not needed.
i am still debating on getting it... not that i need to be wireless, but just to have it for future upgrades like the bluetooth accessories.
    cheers!
--- oh, and i looked at the card you linked... it says mac compatible so can't see why it wouldn't work?!?!

  • Power Mac G4 (sawtooth) AGP - Firmware and other issues

    Hello,
So I was given an older Power Mac G4 AGP which I've been using while my Power Book G4 gets a logic board replacement but I've been having some issues with the AGP unit. How do you check to see what version of the firmware you have? I read a firmware update but it requires OS 9 to launch and I don't know if I need this or not. The other issue has been when I tried to run Firefox after successfully installing it. Firefox doesn't launch, it just opens and then closes. When I use Safari, the browser will work for about a few minutes but then it will freeze and I need to force quit it. I am running 10.4.11 and I was thinking of installing 10.5.6 but I'm not sure if this is possible with the Sawtooth. Do I need to upgrade the processor? Any advice or help is appreciated.

    Hi, veesh678 -
Early models of the G4 (AGP) models came with OS 8.6; later models came with an installer for a model-specific version of OS 9.0.4. The latter disk will have a blue-gray label, be named "Power Mac G4" with a subtitle "Software Install", and has a part number of 691-2657-A (the part number will be in fine print on the right-hand side of the label).
Non-current firmware will not preclude the machine from booting to that CD; a retail OS 9.0.4 Install CD (white label, gold 9, no model named) probably will not work, although a retail OS 9.1 or 9.2.1 Install CD should work fine.
The current firmware version for the G4 (AGP) model is v. 4.2.8, which can be downloaded from this article -
    Article #120068 - G4 Firmware Update 4.2.8
Note that to install that version the machine must be booted to OS 9.1 or OS 9.2.x from its hard drive, and the firmware update must be run from the same hard drive.
Before installing firmware update v. 4.2.8, download and run DIMM First Aid (it's a free download) to verify the compliance of the RAM in the machine.

  • Power Mac G4 400 AGP boot from CD/firmware question

    Hello-
What is the firmware that I need for 9.0.4? I have 9.0.4 installed, but I want to erase and do a clean install and then move on to 9.1 and on. My system profiler says that my BootRom is 3.2.6f1.
I'm trying to boot from a CD (via inernal CD drive) and I'm not having any luck and I'm wondering if it's a firmware problem. My machine displays the start up disk on the desktop and will open its contents, so it seems that the cd drive is ok. When I hit the apple dropdown menu and restart, I press the "C" and all I get is grey. I get the start up chime, but then grey. I also tried the Start up disk function and was able to choose the OS disk for start up, but to no avail.
My start up disks did not come with the machine, but they are Apple G4 9.0.4 and the person I bought them from said they were intended for a G4 400 AGP computer, which I have. I might add that I have the 9.0.4power pc enabler installed as this was a school machine networked for school use. i don't know if this would make any difference. The problem may be the disks, but obviously, I'm hoping not.
Any help would be big help, thanks in advance.

Is iphone 4 Having issues with Blue Tooth connectivity ? Last saturday i have bought up iphone 4,  when i checked that device blue tooth was not detecting the other iphones. I went to apple store in Ottawa. They checked with their Mac computers. They said Yes this iphone is having problem. Please exchange it on the store you bought up.  I have exchanged that iphone with brand new, again same issues...
iPhone is not detecting other devices with Blue Tooth.  I have checked with other two. they having same problem.
Please tell me, What apple gonna do with my iphone now ?  Should i keep it ? or cancel my contract with cell phone company.  As i am sure they not going to replace it again or gonna make excuses.
    Waiting for replies [email protected]

I have upgraded my iphone 3 to a 4. I just recently discovered that while the iphone 3 automatically discovers bluetooth but the iphone 4 does not (couldn't discover any bluetooth). My bluetooth is Jabra SP200. It turned out, there are other steps to take with the bluetooth device to pair with the iphone 4. As stated, iphone 3 detected it automatically. But w the iphone 4, I had to press and hold the answer button of the Jabra for it to pair with iphone 4. Call the bluetooth manufacturer directly and check with their alternative pairing procedures.
    Hope this helps.

Is there a Red LED lit on the logic board?
If not then there is no 5V DC to start up.
Might be time to replace the PRAM Battery, 4 years is close to their lifespan, far less if ever without AC power, & can cause strange startup problems...

    Hi Darrell,
If your Apple Bluetooth and keyboard are not paring to your Mac Mini, then take a look at the article below to walk you through some general troubleshooting to get it to pair and start working again. If you have not done so already, try looking form anything could be causing interference like cordless phones as well and thing metal between the keyboard and the Mac Mini.
