Wireless bridge re-association

Hey Guys,
Need help with a 1252 in bridge mode. The 1252's are not re-associating after the non-root is dropped. Previously at the same location, the 1310 bridge would re-associate without issue. Is there a command I'm missing somewhere? Should I up the retries?
Thanks in advance

Check for the configuration on the 1252 bridge as misconfiguration may be causing the issue. Also check if the same config is present on 1252 as it was on 1310.An SSID is a unique identifier that client devices use to associate with the access point or a VLAN supported by the access point. The SSID helps client devices distinguish between multiple wireless networks and VLANs in the same vicinity and provides access to VLANs by wireless client devices.
Check if "Allow Broadcast SSID to Associate" setting in the "AP Radio Hardware page" is enabled for the association to take place. If this option is disabled association will not take place.

• Wireless Bridge Help

Hi all,
I have a Wireless P2P bridge set up between two buildings. They are about 450 feet apart, Root bridge has a 16dbi Yagi antenna (ebay) and nonroot has a 12dbi Flat Panel antenna. Both bridges are 1231G APs set to Root and Nonroot mode, respectively. I have a few questions. Right now the link is working and is reliably connected. My data rates right now are 1.0 , 2.0 , 5.5 , 6.0 , 9.0 , 11.0 , 12.0 , 18.0 , 24.0 , 36.0 , 48.0 , 54.0 Mb/sec on both sides. I consistenly get on the lower end of the scale, usually hovering around 5.5-12mb/sec range on the nonroot side. Root is typically transmitting at 48 or 54 mb.
My signal should be pretty good at -61 and 34-37 SNR, right?
At work we have a wireless bridge (1310 hardware) and it is set to :::speed basic-9.0 basic-12.0 basic-18.0 basic-24.0 basic-36.0 basic-48.0 basic-54.0::: so I went into mine (1231G hardware) and set it to the same. Voila! I connected at 24-54mb. All seemed well - until I noticed that now that I wasnt using the B rates, I had a spotty connection that was going up and down. Changed it back to all rates, and I again have a stable connection.
What can I do to stabilize and set the connection to OFDM rates so it will be fast and reliable? The distance really shouldnt be an issue, and I can see from one antenna to the other. Would 2 panel antennas be better? Should I find higher gain antennas? Should I switch to the 1310 hardware because it is designed as a bridge? HELP!!!

Hi George,
Tonight I installed a matching panel antenna (l-com HP2414) on my side, and have similar results (actually worse results at first). I upped my side transmit to CCK 30 and OFDM 30 from 20/20 and now have about the same performance (see red below). I have a question - how important is it to have the wifi antenna clear? I have it mounted on the same mast as our TV antenna- see pic attached. Should I move it to it's own mast? I can mount another one on a second chimney if necessary, or raise the TV antenna up a few feet.
I am also not past sticking a yagi at both sides if that will improve my signal to noise ratio...connection still is around 36-54mb, but download speeds on the other side are still only 6mb, not the full 25 we get on the wire off the core, or even the 16 I got on the test nonroot bridge I set up at the same side as the root.

• Secure wireless bridge

I want to establish a secure wireless bridge (with a root bridge and one non root bridge). I can set in the non-root which is the MAC address of the parent, but how can I set in the root bridge with MAC is the non-root one ? I want to avoid other non root bridges can connect to the parent
Thanks

Have an encryption running between the bridges. This way even if a unknown nonroot gets associated to the root, you will not be able to transmit or recevie data if the encryption keys are incorrect, and we have control over the encryption keys

• Wireless Bridging

Currently we have no bridging over wifi enabled at our site.
We have a location which is rather far away to be cabling, so we decided to implement wireless bridging.
So far, we've had nothing but trouble.
We have a WLC managing our wireless networks and we're trying to mesh our AP's to enable the mesh AP to act as the bridge for a switch.
Upon having so much trouble I decided to bring it back to my lab and test it before implementing it again.
I provisioned my switches and AP's in the same manor they are in the field.
It worked for about 5 minutes. I powered them all off. Powered them back on. Now it doesn't work again.
This doesn't make sense.
My root switch can see my root AP, but my mesh switch cannot see my mesh AP.. My rootAP and meshAP can communicate. My MeshAP can see my Mesh Switch via CDP.
I'm trying to troubleshoot this, but I am having no luck.
This was working prior to the newest AP firmware upgrade. We had to upgrade due to a influx of errors coming from the mesh switch in the field.
Thanks for any help.
Sorry for being vague.

Hi George - would you still recommend that if you only had a single MAP scenario? It's just so much easier to manage these ap's from a controller rather than an individual config on each radio. I understand the diminishing returns of mesh once your deployment grown but are there other reasons?
To the OP - I seem to remember reading in list of open caveats this scenario. The workaround was to not have the switch connected to your MAP until after the MAP has completed associating with a controller....then connect the switch..... Go figure.
//art
EDIT: Found it CSCud41334 Not sure if it applies since I don't know the model of ap's you are using.

• Wireless bridging w AP1220Bs

hi,
is wireless bridging possible with 2 units of AP1220Bs (one on IOS, the other on VxWorks)?

i think it seems to work after i have change the ap1220b (ios) to operate as WGB.
anyway, thanks for the suggestion. i dont think i can upgrade as,
a> those ap are loan equipment
b> neither do i have any cco account to obtain the software (requires some image software, if i have not mis-read the upgrade guide)

• Connectivity Issues with 1400 Wireless Bridge

Just seeing if anyone has run into a similar problem....I have two 1400 outdoor wireless bridges. They have been in place for a couple of years without issue. This past week, the non-root bridge began dropping it's association, at first randomly, then consistently. Both bridges have been replaced, antennas (AIR-ANT58G10SSA-N) on both have been replaced, and a spectrum analyzer has been used to verify there is not a problem over the air...the ditance between the two is >=1000 feet. Debugs show no reason for the drop, and when the two are asscoaited, the RSSI is averaging around -78. It had been down since Thursday, then last night, as another step in the process of elimination, we replaced the power injector on the root side, and the two bridges associated. They were up for two hours, then went down again, and then started going up and down randomly. As an additional step in the process of elimnation, we are now going to move the power source that the PI is connected to. Anyone ever run into something similar before or have any additional ideas? Thanks in advance.
Below is the most information I can glean from the logs

Yeah, power save is off, the cable run is only about 20 feet. The radio interface was shut down last night so that alerts weren't generated through the night due to flapping, I opened the interface earlier and right now both are up and have been for about an hour. I agree, -78 is not a great signal...currently, looking at the association, the root is at -64 and the non-root is at -62...will update if there is a status change. Thanks.

• EA2700 Wireless Bridging

Just installed EA2700 to use with new FIOS internet. Have an old wireless modem/router (Netgear DGN-2000) I'd like to use a wireless range extender. I can't find a way to do this in the manual.
I have followed the DGN-2000's instructions and have it setup as a "repeater with wireless client associations".
The Netgear is using the same wireless settings (SSID, security, etc) as the EA2700
I've assigned an IP address to the DGN-2000 on the same network as the EA2700 (i.e. it's at 192.168.1.2)
The DGN-2000's IP address it's outside the assignable range of the EA2700 (192.168.1.10 - 192.168.1.254)
I have disabled DHCP on the DGN-2000
I has put the EA2700's MAC address in "remote MAC address 1" of the DGN-2000's "wireless distribution settings"
However, I don't see a way to tell the EA2700 to allow the DGN-2000 to connect wirelessly. I have connected the DGN-2000 via ethernet and it appears I can connect to the internet wirelessly through the DGN-2000 via the EA2700's WAN connection to my broadband connection. I think this is what the manual calls "How to use a (old) router as an access point".
However, if I disconnect the ethernet cable (and have connected to the DGN-2000 ... remember, both devices are using the same SSID), the client "connects", but can't access the internet. I don't see a way to do this wirelessly (i.e. as a wireless bridge / wireless repeater).
Any ideas? Is it possible (doesn't look like it to me). Am I missing something?

Lorenta,

When it comes to WDS repeating, it takes two to tango. The EA2700 is probably not a willing partner.......and is not capable of having it's signal repeated via WDS.

Using a repeater or a range extender is usually considered a last resort option as your wireless network may suffer. You can read the article below to learn more about extending your wireless coverage. In my opinion, repeating, or WDS repeating is a bad idea....especially when other options are available like powerline adapter kits.

Below is a screenshot of a WRT54G v3 with stock linksys firmware that does allow (cooperate) it's signal to be repeated via WDS. The WRT54G can't repeat the signal, it only "cooperates" with the WDS repeater. (Lazy WDS)

• Setting up a netgear n300 as wireless bridge/access point with airport extremee

I just replaced my netgear wireless router with the airport to allow our many devices on the network without knocking each other off and also increase the speed. But would like to use the netgear as a wireless bridge or access point so that I can still connect my NTFS formatted hard drive to be shared on the network. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I can not seem to find my netgear router with 192.168.1.1 as that comes up with another device. I have tried doing this with a windows laptop in another room but can not seem to make it work. I am now hooked up directly to the airport thinking i need to do it that way and still no luck. Please help.

As long as you intend to do this over ethernet it will work.. you cannot easily wireless repeat or bridge to an apple router.. you would need specific hardware to do it.
What is the exact model of netgear you have?
The setup method depends on the functionality of the router.. but lets assume it does not have a bridge or WAP mode.
You use WAN bypass.
1. Setup the Netgear with IP address in the correct IP range for the rest of the network.. it is hard to talk generalities so lets say the apple is main router and your network is now 10.0.1.x .. then set the Netgear to 10.0.1.250 (apple uses IP 2-200 by default) you can use any value you like outside the DHCP range. Up to the limit which is 254 as long as you keep track of all static IP devices. Apply this setting and power cycle the router.. and you might need to power cycle the computer as well to pick up the new IP.
2. Turn off the DHCP server in the Netgear. You may lose connection to the netgear now.. do not worry about it.. (this can be combined with one.. if you firstly turn off dhcp before you change the IP.. but whatever is possible.. at some point you will need to change around and if you forget what IP .. you will be in a mess.. so write it on a label and stick on the base of the router.. also without dhcp you will either need to reset router to factory using reset button or use static ip on the computer. )
3. Plug ethernet from LAN of the main router to LAN of the Netgear. Reboot the whole network is often necessary.
4. In your computer plugged somewhere in the network.. open browser and go to the address you set.. 10.0.1.250 in my example.
5. You can then setup the Netgear to do whatever you like.. DIsk access is fine.. wireless is fine.. it just cannot be a router.
Many many reboots if you get lost. Hit reset and start over.

• Need Help With Wireless Bridging

Hello all, I have recently perchased high speed WiFi for my house so I could do some gaming on my Xbox. Problem is my roommate, who is a tech support professional, set the modem up in his bedroom, my Xbox is old and requires a wireless adapter to pick up signals but since the modem is so far away from it it barely recieves the signal. So currently I'm paying for nothing so I confronted him about this issue and he attempted to fix it by wirelessly bridging a router to the modem but after a month he hasn't succeeded and has given up so now it's up to me and I have no clue where to even begin. The modem we have is a Cisco DPC3825 and the router is a NetGear Wireless-N Router WVR2000 V2. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Denver: I did not actually understand what kind of bridging you want to do?
The modem already has a wireless transmitter. I think you mean the router is picking up the wireless signal and provide the xbox with connectivity via wired cable. is that right?
If correct, It looks like the issue is with the distance/barriers between your modem and router. You need to try to eliminate some barriers in between to get better signl. Try also to put the devices as close as possible to each other.

• Using the Mac as a wireless Bridge for the Xbox 360

Want to use your Mac essentially as a wireless adapter for an Xbox 360 or any console? plug in the ethernet cable between the two devices and follow the setup process!
Wireless Bridge setup process
1. Open system Preferences.
2. Clisk sharing, then the internet tab and select Airport as the “share your connection from” then select the Built-in Ethernet in the list.
3. Open up the terminal Application and type ifconfig en0 in the window it sohuld display an outcome like this
ifconfig en0
en0: flags=8863<UP,BROADCAST,SMART,RUNNING,SIMPLEX,MULTICAST> mtu 1500
inet 192.168.2.1 netmask 0xffffff00 broadcast 192.168.2.255
ether 00:16:cb:cc:80:aa
media: autoselect status: inactive
supported media: autoselect 10baseT/UTP <half-duplex> 10baseT/UTP <full-duplex> 10baseT/UTP <full-duplex,hw-loopback> 10baseT/UTP <full-duplex,flow-control> 100baseTX <half-duplex> 100baseTX <full-duplex> 100baseTX <full-duplex,hw-loopback> 100baseTX <full-duplex,flow-control> 1000baseT <full-duplex> 1000baseT <full-duplex,hw-loopback> 1000baseT <full-duplex,flow-control> none
4. This gives you the information of what your computer’s IP address is. On the xbox dashboard in the network setup screen select manual and select the top section which contains the IP address, subnet mask, and Gateway address, for the IP address, input the Highlighted section above plus one, so its 192.168.2.1 (this is for standard configurations, again, just add one to the last digit of your IP address.
5. Open Airport Admin Utility, the select configure on your airport. Then select the Internet tab This will give you your subnet Mask, input accordingly.
6. For the Gateway address, you are going to put in the value in the blue box. This is because you are using your Computer as a gateway, therefor you need to tap into its connection.
So For the Average setup you will use:
IP Address: 192.168.2.2
Subnet Mask: 255.255.255.0
Gateway Address: 192.168.2.1
7. Now for the DNS server, this varies according to What internet service you have, but, Airport admin utility provides the answer, right below the information we used above, you will see DNS Server. viola! Put that in as your primary DNS server in the second box of edit options in the network menu.
Now you should be complete, test the connection and you should be Ready to Go!! Happy Gaming!

Welcome to the discussions, DanSwiggsD!
If you have a non-Apple device as your main router, unfortunately the AirPort Extreme has almost no chance of compatibility with your main router.
If you do have an Apple router as your main device, please post back with your model number and we'll let you know how your devices should be configured.
If you don't have an Apple device as your main router you have a few options to connect the xbox:
1) A pair of ethernet powerline adapters could be used if you did not want to run a regular ethernet cable from your main router to the xbox.
2) The new AirPort Express 802.11n model does have a feature called Proxy STA which should allow it to receive a wireless signal from any wireless router and allow the ethernet port to be enabled.

• Share network traffic between 2 parallel wireless bridges - What kit?

Dear All,
I'm a technology professional, but mainly in electronic design rather than high end networking. Hence my request for your advice.
I wish to specify some items of kit that I can ask a networking professional to fit and configure to solve my particular application.
I would like to use (and already have in place) two parallel wireless bridges between 2 buildings. One is on 2.4GHz and the other is on 5GHz. In my simple testing so far (of each link in turn), they both work brilliantly. So far, these are in place just for test purposes, but soon I will be required to make the system "live".
The reason I'm doing this is to split network traffic over both links (to possibly get enhanced bandwidth) but to mainly build in redundancy should one link fail.
What kit is required to do this (apart from the 4 access points configured as bridges)?
I imagine I may need a load balancing device(s) or possibly something more suitable for this task.
I'd like the solution to be very transparent to the rest of the system, I'd like it to "look" like it's a simple wireless bridge (but really it's a highly robust dual bridge). I hope my waffle makes sense.
Any thoughts?
Best regards,
L.O.

You can certainly copy the addresses from one machine to the other - the contact files are held in user/Library/Application Support/AddressBook. Copy all files into the same respective location on the other machine (they will overwrite any existing contacts).
If you want the address books kept in sync, take a look at SyncTogether or SeeCard Rendezvous.

i hope this can be done. i've been searching the forums, but don't seem to have found what i'm looking for. i have a wrt55ag v2 w/1.79 firmware. this is connected to the modem for the internet and has the network on this floor connected. i now need to add a network on another floor. there isn't a way to wire it to here. i was under the impression that a wap55ag would do the trick. however after getting it (wap55ag v2 firmware 1.1), i cannot get the two to talk to each other. the wap is using an address withing the router's range. wireless-a settings are the same on both devices. wap is set for static ip addresses. default gateway is set for the ip of the wireless router. i've tried making the ssid the same and different for the devices. still no connection between the two. since i recently purchased the wap, it can go back. so the primary thing would be making the 2nd network connect wirelessly to the wrt55ag.
any help would be appreciated.
well, you go have fun with that.

hi...if you want to use the AP as a wireless bridge it would only work with another AP...if you want it to use it in wireless repeater mode , it would work with either wrt55ag or wap55ag ..

• Multipmultiple Airport Extreme Base Stations: WDS Or "Extend Wireless Network" To Have Wired -- Wireless Bridge?

Hello there!
I've been looking for this info, but have as yet been unable to find it. Here's my scenario:
I have two Airport Extreme Base Stations (both are dual band) and 3 airport expresses. The main internet connection in my house is in one room, where I have an AEBS as the main wireless router. In another room, I have a bunch of ethernet-only devices. I'd like to use the 2nd AEBS in this room, plug the ethernet devices into it and have the 2nd AEBS act as a wired <--> wireless bridge (connected to the same wireless network as the 1st AEBS). I've attempted this via "extend a wireless network," but the ethernet devices don't get past the AEBS they're plugged into. Should I instead be implementing WDS?
I mention the airport expresses as I'd like to have airtunes & wireless signal in other areas, but would like to keep the set-up as simple as possible (i.e., not config the AXes for WDS unless it's required).
Thanks in advance for any help!

Unlike the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn), the 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn) cannot be configured as a wireless Ethernet bridge.
However, there are at least two ways to configure it to provide wired clients access:
Connect the second AEBSn back to the first by Ethernet; reconfigure the second AEBSn as a bridge and disable its wireless radios, or
Reconfigure both AEBSns into an extended wireless network. For 802.11n AirPorts, this would be called a dynamic WDS. The AEBSn, connected to the Internet would be the "main" base station and it would only require that you enable the "Allow this network to be extended" option in the AirPort Utility. The extending AEBSn would need to be configured with the option, Wireless Mode = Extend a wireless network, enabled.
In both configurations, the second AEBSn's Ethernet ports would be enabled for wired clients.

• Wireless bridging is not working in 1552 outdoor access point and 2602e indoor access point.

Hi,
I am have been tested wireless bridging with 2 indoor Cisco 2602 access point by following the attached document and its working fine without any issue.
After then I made one Cisco 1552 EU-M-K9 outdoor access point as RAP, then connect to this RAP with one 2602 mesh access point. But its not working, mesh access point is just start scan the signal to get associate with RAP, but not getting established. Is there any specific configuration required to connect between outdoor and indoor access point. Kindly find the attachment and advise.

• Aironet 350 Wireless Bridge Problem

I have inherited a wireless link between two building that used a pair of Aironet 350 wireless bridges. I say used because one took a lightning strike and is fried. I need to see the configuration on the remaining bridge to set up the new bridge but no one knows the user name or password to access the remaining functioning 350. How do I reset this old buzzard? I have tried all the instructions I have found on this site and others. There is no reset button. I found this out by disassembling another Aironet 350 we had which has also taken a strike. I cannot set up the new 1300 without knowing the config of what it will be talking to. I have been able to connect to the 350 with a serial cable and I can see some of the information. But the only thing I get is the ip address for fe0. I have attached the file I captured to this post. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks.

If you know the IP of the 350, put a laptop on the same subnet and use a crossover cable to web to its GUI. VxWorks CLI sucks!
If you can get hold of a pair of 1231 APs, they can be configured to run in bridge mode and use the same antennas as the 350s. Benefits are IOS and G radios.
