Wireless bridging two routers

I have two routers. an airport express base station bought this earlier this year and a linksys WRT160N router. I am looking to bridge them wirelessly with the airport acting as the main router. It is upstairs with the broadband modem. The linksys router I have I would like to use downstairs and connect the bluray drive, directtv wireless box and xbox to the system. I have looked on the internet to help however I am still stuck on trying to have the linksys router "connect" to the airport and relay that signal.
I think the thing that gets me is not being able to correctly label the static IP address inputs. Under internet settings It asks for Internt IP address, Subnet Mask, Default Gateway, DNS1 ( 2 and 3) are optional. In addition there is an option for network setup and that asks for Router IP address and subnet mask and DHCP server setting (which i assumed is disabled). Can someone help? Thanks in advance.

The issue is that most non-Apple routers are not compatible with Apple routers when it comes to extending their Wi-Fi range via a wireless connection ... and this is true the other way around.
The only option to extend your Linksys with the AirPort Express is to interconnect them by Ethernet and configure them for a roaming network.

  • Bridging two routers wirelessly

I am new to this and searched the forum and couldn't quite find what I was looking for.
A neighbor and I are trying to share internet access to both our networks and split the internet cost.  We both have the newest wrt54g so I 'm guessing firmware is out of the queston.  So i was thinking about getting a wireless bridge like a gaming bridge you can get at any electronics store, and put it at his house and hooking the ethernet connection to his internet hook up in the router.   Is that possible, will his router get my internet connection like my other computers and share it with his?  We want to keep the equipment we have up and running seeing how we have multiple wired connections on each router.  Any help would be much appreciated.  I also appologize if something similiar has been asked and if so can someone point me to it.

Remember: with a wireless bridge you create a single private network. All computers will be in the same network. Your neighbor will be able to access your computers (or at least try to).
Also: if you are using the wireless for clients (e.g. you have a wireless laptop) this will probably split throughput on the wireless in half as all traffic must be transmitted twice. Plus depending on the distance and the obstacles in the line of sight between the routers you may get a very slow unreliable connection.
Thus, if the houses are next to each other and you trust your neighbor I would simply run a cable (if this is possible). This way you have full speed internet access in your house, too.

  • WRT54GS Wireless security two routers (WDS)

    2 WRT54GS
    Wireless connection between routers.
No1 SSID test (connected to ADSL modem) disabled security
    No2 SSID test1 disabled security
After some hard work I was able to make a wireless connection (50m/150ft) between two WRT54GS routers. But when I enabled security (WPA-TKIP) on the router (test1) that is't connected to the ADSL modem, it could't connect to intenet anymore, only to the secured router (test1).
I would be very happy for some tips how to enable wireless security on both routers.

  • Connecting two EA6500 routers via wireless bridge

Hi, I want to know how can we bridge two EA6500 routers via wireless. I do not want to use the lan cable. Please help.
    Thanks,

This setup is not possible. You can only cascade the routers via wired connection. The access points on these routers are mainly transmitters, they're not receivers so you can't associate them wirelessly. You can, however, get a wireless bridge to do the job. Check out the Dual Band N Entertainment Bridge WET610N and Wireless N Universal Media Connector WES610N.

  • Wireless linking of two Routers

Hi, could somebody be so kind and point me in the right direction.  We have two Linksys routers, WRT54G (Router1) and BEFW11S4 (Router2)
Router1 is connected to the DSL Modem and PC's connect to it wirelessly, all fine.
Now, we have a shed that's roughly 200 ft away and ideally would like to use the Router2 device to receive the signal from Router1 and then relay it wirelessly to the PCs in the shed.
I've heard about access points, antennas, range extenders, bridges, etc. but am confused.  Would I need an addtl. Antenna and/or Access point to connect to the Internet/WAN TCP/IP cable port of Router2.
    Thanks for any pointers !!!

One way to do it is a wireless bridge.  Which is what I have setup in my home.  The WRT54G will have to be loaded with a third party firmware and setup as secondary to work though.  HERE is a link to a wireless bridge setup.

    Hi ,
    Here is the plan…
    • Top left bridge will be Root Bridge for VLAN3 and only vlan 3 traffic is traversed.
    • Bottom left bridge will be Root Bridge for VLAN 10 and only vlan 10 traffic is traversed.
    • If any one of the bridge/link goes down, traffic will be diverted to other link automatically.
    • By doing this we can use both of the links effectively.
Configuration is attached.. please let us know your ideas/// (Or would it work)?

  • Wireless Bridging between two 1242 AP's

    Hello All,
I have a trailer at a client that I'am trying to connect to the main building via a wireless bridge using two 1242 AP's. I'am trunking on the connection to each AP using dot1q. I don't mind all the vlans going to the trailer so I'am not limiting the vlans. What do I have to do on the AP's to get this to work exactly? Are there any guides on this? thanks
    Jason

    Hi Jason,
If you're unfamiliar with the CLI, you should probably use the GUI. Here's what's needed to establish a bridge link between two APs:
    1. Only one SSID is needed, regardless of the number of VLANs
    2. The SSID should be placed in the native VLAN (as only one VLAN can be associate to an SSID)
    3. Encryption for the link should be attached to the native VLAN
    4. The SSID should be configured for infrastructure mode only
    5. Every other VLAN should be created, but not assigned to anything.
    6. The radio role/mode must be set to root bridge on side and non-root bridge on the other side
The critical realization is that only one SSID is used. It's perhaps what's most confusing about bridges. To my knowledge, you need to configure every VLAN you want to traverse the link. I do not know of any way to simply allow all VLANs.
Also, know that the channel can be set on the root side (and should be hard set to channel 1, 6, or 11 if using 2.4GHz), but you cannot configure the channel on the non-root. This is because the non-root scans all channels and matches to the root.
Let me know if you need assistance with any of this. I or someone else on the boards would be glad to help.

  • Low throughput over wireless bridge with two WRT160N

I recently bought two Linksys WRT160Ns and created a wireless bridge according to http://www.dd-wrt.com/wiki/index.php/Wireless_Bridge. I installed DD-WRT v24-sp1 (07/27/08) min.
But, in a perfect setting where both devices are just a meter apart I can only get a throughput of 20Mbps when using security (either WEP or WPA) or 30Mbps if using no security at all. To measure this I'm transferring a large file from one computer to the other and checking the result on the "bandwidth" page of the router.
Any suggestions on how to improve the bandwidth would be much appreciated!
    Thanks, Gordan

Ask in a dd-wrt forum. They know how to tweak their firmware.

  • Connecting two networks with wireless bridges

    Hello all,
We are trying to create a true CAN. We have 2 sets of 2 buildings each. One set is on the 172.23.x.x network and the other set is on the 172.25.x.x network. Each set has routing in place to go out over their respective MPLS circuits (which will be removed once this project is done). Each set also has their own vtp domain each containing ~30 vlans.
Right now, there is a wireless bridge at each set of buildings and they can reach each other fine according to the vendor. I am trying to figure out an efficient way to tie these two networks together keeping their current vlan and local topology in place.
    Site 1:
    Vlan 1: 172.23.1.x
    Wireless bridge: 172.25.1.x
    Site 2:
    Vlan 1: 172.25.1.x
    Wireless bridge: 172.25.1.x
Any help is appreciated. The idea is that all traffic from site two will now traverse the wireless bridge and use all resources and routing available at site 1.

OK wel now the only solution left for you re-designing the IP addressing or if you want same  ip address either increase the scope or range of ip address per vlan or use DHCP server to provid Half the address to both sides. but the interface connecting interface must be a Layer 3 or Layer 2 ports. The only concern should be DHCP server vlan over lapping can be manage by Configuing VTP (Client/Server) .
              (Switch) ====wireless------------------wireless====(switch)
Trunk (Layer2 port)                                                 Trunk (Layer2 port)
and for vlan just if one dhcp server  nothign to worry  and incase of multiple server just load balance it will also provide the reduncency in you network.
other option is simple using L3 approach and change the ip address only for resourches you want other people to access.

  • Connect two routers-wireless

Hello, I am looking around the forums and can't find and i'd like to know next:
I have two routers Linksys (wrv200 and wrt110). One on one side of the house, the other will be at the other side od the house. Questions:
    - Is it possible to wirelessly connect second to frist
    - Second willl broadcast the same SSID (wireless and other settings) as the first and will have the function of covering the signal on the other side of the house and outside, where the first virtually could not
    - Which one of these two routerja recommend as the first (connect to a modem)
    - What is all need to set athe first and second routerj

  • Connect two routers wirelessely

I have two routers SRX 200  and WRT300N and want to connect them wirelessly. First of all would it be possible to do that and 2nd will it increase the coverage? I will appreciate for your response.

Both your routers have better signal/speed capabilities compared to the normal G routers. However, you can't connect them wirelessly.

  • Building wireless bridge using e3000 and wrt160n with wap54g as acess point between two

I recently purchased an e3000 router and would like to setup my old wrt160n nextdoor for my brother to access my network for Xbox 360 and internet.  How do I set up the wrt160n so that he can access my network?  I have a wap54g that worked great with his computer and wireless nic card with antenna.  With the Xbox 360 added he needs a router to connect both. Will reconfiguring the wrt160n work if so how do you do it?  Everything else in my home is hard wired except a printer. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I have tried setting this wireless network bridge as suggested by oook and It doesn't work.  Would anyone have any suggestion  as to how to do this. every diagram that I have seen shows a connection such as this being done between two WAPs.  Since the WAP I currently have is rather difficult to find.  I would like To know which of these Items would be The best to go with to do what I want to do.  The WAP610n or the WET610n or a combination of both? From What little info I have been able to find the WET610n will expand the range of my e3000 into other areas of a home. Will this do it For a wireless bridge between to homes that are about 500 feet apart? Is the WAP610 the better product since it is a WAP? I am getting very frustrated with this. I think I need to boost the signal from my end and be able to capture it at the other end. Just not sure how to do this without having to invest hundreds of dollars to do it.  Any help would be greatly appreciated as well as any reply to this post.

  • Need help setting up WRT54G as wireless bridge/repeater

I currently use a WRT54GS as a wireless router.  It is located downstairs and can't be moved.  I have a few devices upstairs that can't connect to the router because of a weak signal.  I can not run a cable upstairs and have a second WRT54G router that I'd like to use as a wireless access point.  Can I configure it to work as a wireless bridge or repeater?  If so, will the 4 LAN ports work in addition to the wireless ones?

No.  You cannot connect the two routers wirelessly, at least not with Linksys firmware.  Perhaps there is third party firmware that will convert the WRT54G to a wireless bridge, but this will void your Linksys warranty.
Another option is to add high gain antennas, such as the Linksys HGA7T, to your WRT54GS.   Also, try to align the router and wireless adapter antennas so that they are parallel to each other, but perpendicular to the line between them  -  this should maximize your signal.
