Wireless Capability with my PC?

I was told told "if the PC has an 802.11b or 802.11g compatible card or adapter, it will work wirelessly without any additional hardware being needed."
So, how can I find out if my pc has that?
And if not, how can I get it?
I need to know before buying this..

I followed your directions and looked in the Device Manager. But I am confused as to what I should be looking for. I am working on a Windows XP, as you can see from the screen shot. This is a DESKTOP computer, which is why I am unsure if it will be compatible with the Airport. It is a Compaq Presario?

Your iMac does have wireless capability. It does need, however, some wireless network in order to connect to the Internet. It sounds like there are several networks in your area, including one Belkin router that is not encrypted and several other networks that are. I presume that you would know if the Belkin one is yours, and you would have mentioned it. Do not use someone else's network without their permission. In some jurisdictions it is illegal, in others it is merely foolish.
It is impossible to know what Xfinity has given you. Possibly it is only a cable modem, or perhaps it has a router built in. Call them and ask them. If it has a router built in, get them to help you set it up. Note that some tech support people for Internet service providers will resist working with Macs. Be persistent, it is not that different.
If they did not provide a router, you will need to get one. Apple makes the AirPort Extreme base station, the AirPort Express base station and the Time Capsule. Other companies have their own. Be sure you get one that is up to date and has 802.11n capabilities (for the highest speed) and go on from there.

I am very happy with mine. It connects to my Linksys E4200 router at 450 MBPS on my N only 5.0 GHz band.
I believe that is the maximum throughput for the AE 3000 wireless adapter.
I also like that it comes with the 3' usb extension cable and cradle to position the device for the best reception.

Samsung CLP-315W to wirelessly work with OS 10.8.2?

I know this printer CAN work with my network, it has worked with the current firmware and network printer settings, however it doesn't want to connect recently. Can someone please explain how best to set up a stable static network connection with the printer? Here's what's happened thus far. I have uninstalled the smart panel and the driver and reinstalled it fresh with the newest ones. Both are installed. When I plug in a USB I get a modern app dialog that allows me to access the settings, when I connect it via a wired ethernet connection I can access the Sync Thru setup dialog through any web browser. Other websites say that if I connect via either of those methods and change the setup to Static IP, switch the address, save it and then disconnect the blue light wireless capability should turn on within 20 seconds. The problem is it does not.
Please help me! You would be a hero to many people who got suckered into purchasing this wonderful printer with the WORST customer support ever.

The PDF I am having trouble with when using Safari is a "Weight Workout" that www.activtrax.com automatically creates as an URL and automatically opens using Reader. When I used Adobe Reader 10.1.5, the print symbol showed up. However, when I installed Reader version 11.0.01, only a black screen appeared and no print symbol showed up when I moved my mouse cursor. So, I went back to using version 10.1.5.
ActivTrax states "Your default pdf viewing program will open and display the Workout form." Someone suggested making Preview my default PDF viewing program? Do you know how to do this? If I could make Preview my default PDF viewing program, would doing so prevent me from accessing materials from websites that say that you must have Reader installed to view the item?
In additon, when I open email PDF email attachments, they open in Preview and not Reader. But PDFs that websites create automatically open in Reader.

Adding wireless capability to HP Laserjet Pro M1536DNF

I presently have an Hp Laserjet 3052 to which I do not believe I can add wireless capability.
I am considering a Laserjet M1535DNF. The spec sheet says that wireless can be added by using a separate
accessory. Is this a reasonable purchase if I must have wireless capability?

I figured it out. I bought this printer specifically because the Apple web site said it was compatible to print with the iPad. Well, it is if you connect it by ethernet to a router that is connected to a wireless router. That's the only way you'll get it to print with AirPrint. After hours of mucking around, I finally got it to work and the ONLY way is what I've described, at least right now. And the wireless router must be on the same network as the one accessed by your iPad. It is great to be able to print from the iPad. Good luck. Sudsbrew

Creating a seamless wireless network with 2 AExpress units

I have 2 Airport Express units in different parts of my house. I have struggled for YEARS trying to get them to create one seamless wireless network with the same name that I could float between. I have never been able to get that to work. anyone?
I know that some of the problems MAY have to do with the non-apple router settings, but I just have never gotten a clear response form anyone about weather it is doable, and/or worth doing. I would settle for 2 seperate wireless networks that didn't compete with each other and/or constantly need re-booting to stay active. I am generally the most tech savvy person I know and am consulted on IT by friends and colleageus regularly, but I just cannot figure this one out..
I am totally capable of setting this up, both in the router and the AE units, if someone can just tell me that;
1) yes it is possible and it will work, and
2) just set it up like this...

Thanks for the clarification. Check your AirPort Express devices one at a time, but other than different device names to avoid confusion.....AirPort Express 1, AirPort Express 2....for example, the settings should look this:
Open AirPort Utility , select one AirPort Express, click Manual Setup
Click the Wireless tab below th row of icons
Wireless Mode = Create a wireless network
Wireless Network Name = Your choice
No check mark needed next to "Allow this network to be extended"
Radio Mode = 802.11n (802.11 b/g compatible) a good choice, but you can choose other combinations by holding down the option key on your Mac while you click on the selection box
Channel = Automatic
Wireless Security = WPA2 Personal an excellent choice if all of your devices are compatible with this setting
Wireless Password = Your wireless password
Confirm Password
Click the Internet icon
Connect Using = Ethernet
Connection Sharing = Off (Bridge Mode)
Update to save settings
Configure AirPort Express 2 exactly the same way and Update to save settings
Then, power down the entire network.....all devices....order is not important
Wait a moment, then start the modem/router first and let it run 2-3 minutes by itself
Start each AirPort Express the same way
Start each other network device one at a time about a minute apart
Check for proper network operation
IF....you did not have your AirPort Express devices in Bridge Mode before.....that is the reason why you are having issues now and also is the reason why the "roaming" network was not working.....assuming that there was a reasonable overlap in wireless coverage between the 2 Express devices, of course.
If you want to try the "roaming" setup again, assign the exact same wireless network name, security and password to both Express devices and confirm again that both are setup in Bridge Mode as the very last step before you click the Update button in AirPort Utility.
Power down the entire network and start up in sequence as well as in the example above.

Connecting an iMac without wireless capability to wireless network

Hi, Having Fios installed with a wireless router, but the router will be downstairs now, the old iMac will be on the second floor. How can I connect this old iMac to the network now? Also, there is a printer upstairs that is not wireless capable. Is there a solution that can make this printer accessible to the other wireless computers on the network? (We have a couple of MacBooks that will be connected to the wireless network.) Thanks for help anyone can provide.

You could get the appropriate Apple internal wireless card for your iMac. Then you could connect the printer to your iMac and enable printer sharing on that iMac. Then any device connected to your network would be able to use that printer.
On your iMac, go to the Apple menu and select "About this Mac". What speed does it list for the processor?
If the processor speed is 700 or 800 MHz, you would need the original 802.11b AirPort card. That is the only card which is compatible.
If the processor speed is 1 GHz or higher, you would need the 802.11b/g AirPort Extreme card.

I have rebooted the iPhone; I have had it forget about the wireless earbuds, and repaired and reconnected; I have reset all network settings. Thx in advance.
PS: I understand that more recent versions of iOS have a way to choose where audio output goes (speaker, headphone jack, Bluetooth device). Does this older version of iOS? I could not find an option or setting.

I've noticed this lately as well, with my iPhone 4. I couldn't confidently pin it directly on any particular iOS update, but my iPhone used to automatically connect up via Bluetooth with my Prius's handsfree feature, and now it doesn't. I work with a CE-based device at my job, with Bluetooth capability, and I used to test out that feature by having it discover my iPhone. This no longer works either.
What I have found (not really a solution, but it does work and may be a clue for Apple) is that if I simply go to the Settings app then the General -> Bluetooth screen and let it sit there, it will pair right up with my car within a few seconds. Bluetooth is always on, and always says "Now Discoverable" at the bottom of the settings screen.

Fix for Wireless Capability Turned Off

If you have lost your wireless connection (Wi-Fi) and pressing the wireles button on your laptop doesn't fix it, do this:
Download and install HP Connection Manager.
After 8 hours of screwing with this I am so happy to report my Wi-Fi has been turned back on. The antenna button did not work. It only turned the Bluetooth on and off. My wireless connection had a red X on it and the troubleshooter told me straight up that my "Wireless capability is turned off", but gave me no way to turn it back on. In Windows Mobility Center the Wireless Network clearly showed it was off, but the button to turn it on was greyed out. I updated the BIOS and wireles drivers, but that did nothing. Then I downloaded and installed HP Connection Manager and rebooted. I opened up HP CM and there was a button that showed the wireless was off. I pushed it and the wireless turned on. That easy. Or rather, after hours and hours of pain, it turned on. My next step would have been to go through the BIOS to see if somehow from there the Wi-Fi had been disabled, but I did not need to go that far.

I understand that your wireless connection is no longer working for you for a day or so. I am happy to help with this.
Just to be clear, the WLAN connection was working prior to you installing the Bluetooth driver, or am I misunderstanding? If it was working just prior to your Bluetooth install, then it would be worth your while, to try a system restore to a point just before you installed that driver, and see if the WLAN is working again.
Using Microsoft System Restore (Windows 7)
If that does not help then I would recommend downloading the driver for your WLAN adapter from the support page for your notebook: HP Pavilion dv3536tx Entertainment Notebook PC - Software & Drivers
There are two drivers available for Windows 7, and if you are not sure which adapter you have, you can check within Device Manager, although it is likely it is showing as an unknown device. In that case, try each drive, one at a time and see if it helps. Also look through the following page, directly related to your problem as you described it:
Resolving Universal WLAN, Wireless, and Wi-Fi Errors
Between those, you should be able to resolve the Red X on the icon. If not, it is possible that the wlan adapter has become faulty. If that happens, you can either look at calling HP for a replacement part, or you can try a USB wireless adapter.

Can I use the Ethernet Port of the A1264 Airport Express to connect to the Ethernet port of a computer that does not have wireless capability when the Airport Express is also used on a wireless network with an Airport Extreme 5th generation as the access point for the network?

Bob, Thanks for the info. I have read different articles that said yes, but I wanted to make sure before I commit to buy. I have an older A1084 which I could not use the Ethernet port. I know at one point I was able to when I was on 10.4. Now that I am on an Intel processor and 10.8 I am going to have to upgrade some of my Apple wireless hardware.

Wireless capability switch

Today when I restarted my computer after it froze, it couldn't find any wireless networks. I tried troubleshooting the problem, but the only advice I got was to turn on my wireless capability. The computer has a switch on the upper right corner of the keyboard, which light is white when I'm able to connect and orange when turned off. When I pushed this button it was orange as usual when turned off, but when I tried to turn it on, it got a strange light I've never seen before that was yellowish, like a fusion of the two normal colours. After another try with the troubleshooting, it kept telling me to turn on wireless capability. In Windows Mobility Center, I was unable to turn the wireless network connection on. The help popup told me that if I was unable to switch there, I had to switch with the hardware switch. I also checked the network adapters to see that they were enabled, and everything looked okay. I've restarted my computer a couple of times now, even started it in safe mode, but nothing seems to help.
Is the hardware broken or do I need to update any software? Have you seen problems like this before?

Reinstall the wireless adapter's driver. You will need to identify the wifi adapter by either entering the BIOS and getting the FCC ID on the system information page or in the Device Manager.
Post the PCI\VEN character string here and one of us will help you or do a google search with it as the keyword. Once identified you can use the HP recovery manager in Windows to reinstall the driver. Choose the proper driver, put a tick in the box to its left and then click on install. See the example image below.

Trying to upgrade Thinkpad X20 for wireless capability - HELP!

Hi, guys...I have an "old" IBM Thinkpad X20 that I'm trying to get a Wireless connection for. I currently have Qwest Internet with my regular PC, and their Modem comes with a wireless attachment. The USB-plugin wireless connector does work...I tried it on another PC I own. I don't believe there's anything to load (drivers, etc)...just plug the USB Device in and that's all it takes.
I thought that until I decided to try it on the Thinkpad. It seems to know the device is hooked up...but there's no recognition that's it's a wireless connector. I'm missing something...and I think it might be that I need an IBM ThinkPad 11a/b/g Wireless LAN PCI Express Mini Card...or something like that? Right now, the only thing on the laptop is a 3Com 10/100 mini PCI Ethernet Adapter.
I'm dumb as a stump when it comes to laptops...any help you can throw my way would be appreciated! And right now the OS is Windows 2000, but I'll probably try upgrading that at a later date...

It looks to me like the M1000 doesn't have native wireless capability and that the W1000 plugs into the modem in order to provide it as an access point. However your X20 doesn't have a built-inWiFi adapter. You will need to get one, either that plugs into a USB port or into a PCMCIA port. These are available inexpensively at computer stores or on eBay. Older is better to ensure that they should come with a Win2k driver. (The reason your other notebook works with WiFi is probably because newer notebooks almost always come with built-in WiFi support.)

WRT120N - wireless capability routinely fails and requires router reboot

I purchased the WRT120N wireless router about a month ago and have found that the wireless capability of this unit routinely fails. I have numerous wireless devices in our home but it's the Apple iTouches that use it most of the time. Every day or two the wireless function just stops working and I have to rebooot the unit via the admin web page. Then everything continues to work for a while until we notice that it has failed again. I upgraded the router firmware to v1.0.04 and followed the instructions carefully but this made no difference.
Searching the web revealed that this was a wide-spread and well documented problem. Many other forum posts warn consumers to avoid buying this cheap and unreliable product.
I am about to give up return the unit to the store I bought it from but thought I'd give one last chance to this forum to see if there was any fix or alternative.

hi, to this topic I'd like to post my problem. so i have wrt120n wireless router, and I had a problem with connecting two computers ( one PC on cable, other Notebook with wireless). When both computers is online, router start to reboot. Event wiever posted :

The computer is able to connect to the router perfectly fine, but I can't get on to the internet because I'm unable to aquire an IP address from the router. Instead of giving me my 198.168.1.x IP, I'm getting a 169.254.x.x.
But the thing is that i can't connect to router adress 192.168.1.1, I tried to reset router but still nothing. any ideas? how connect to the router?

Extend existing wireless network with airport express..impossible?

I have tried to extend my existing wireless network with an airport express, but it seemd that I always need a ethernetcable...apple support insured me it is possible but the airport utility software only allows me to extend using a cable it seems....

Couple of thoughts here.......
The AirPort Express will only extend a wireless network if you have another Apple router providing the wireless network to be extended.
Is your "main" wireless router an Apple product? If yes, what model number do you have?
It would also help if we could get the model number of the AirPort Express. Some older versions are not capable of extending a wireless network.

Lost wireless capability on WRT54G (wired works fine)

So at some point in the night, I lost all wireless capability on my WRT54G V8. Both my roommates computer and mine can not connect wirelessly, but through a ethernet cable it's fine. My adapter sees the network, but never gets past 'Acquiring network address'.
I searched the forums for similar problems, but all I could find was people with brand new machines, whereas mine was working when I went to sleep, and now not so much. Oh, and I called tech support, and they were nice enough to tell me that my warranty expired two days ago, thus they can't help me for free. Fantastic.

As you have mentioned that it was working previously, then i think you need to do is Click on Start and goto the Control Panel and double click on Network Connections, right click on Wireless Network Connection and click on Properties.Now on this window, click on the second tab Wireless Network and give a check mark on "Use windows to configure my wireless" and then remove all the network names from the Preferred Networks Window. Then click on OK...Right click on Wireless Network Connection again and click on View Available Wireless Networks and try to re-connect to your network...Now it will give you the opportunity to put the network/wep key, make sure you enter the correct network key and confirm it...It will connect... Check if you are able to Browse Internet.
