Wireless card, using my emac in italy

I have 2 questions concerning my 2 1/2 yr old emac. I need to go wireless and am unsure which card/system I need to get. Secondly I now live in Italy and am unsure what size transformer I need to get to use my emac here. Thanks for all help
emac   Mac OS X (10.4.1)

beeastman,
Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
It's not clear if your eMac is a 700 MHz or an early 800 MHz model, which use the 802.11b Airport card, or a post-May 6, 2003 800MHz or later model that takes the 802.11g Airport card. You can check Apple System Profiler on your computer to check the specs. The Airport Extreme card is in the Apple Store and is readily available. The original Airport card is hard to find (and more expensive); if your eMac is the original Airport, you may want to look into an Ethernet bridge instead for WiFi access.
In what country was your eMac originally used? You can look up voltage and plug specifications at Voltage Specifications by Country. As a rule of thumb, look for a transformer that has at least 20% more capacity than required so as to have a reserve. Rated max wattage of the eMac is 170w although one sin the US at least run fine on 120w power.

  • Setting-up Wireless Card (Using Ndiswrapper) [Solved]

I've recently setup Arch-Linux on my laptop and I am now trying to get my wireless card to work. I've got this card to work with Ubuntu Linux using Ndiswrapper, so I know it should be possible. The card is 'Atheros AR5007EG' and my laptop model is a Toshiba p205-s6307.
I have the drivers that I used on Ubuntu and I installed Ndiswrapper from source. I then went through the following steps (I didn't document my original driver installation, so I will just write what the commands now output. The installation had no errors):
    [tristan@asuka wdriver]$ pwd
    /home/tristan/wdriver
    [tristan@asuka wdriver]$ ls
    ar5211.sys net5211.inf
    [tristan@asuka wdriver]$ sudo ndiswrapper -i net5211.inf
    Password:
    driver net5211 is already installed
    [tristan@asuka wdriver]$ sudo ndiswrapper -m
module configuration already contains alias directive
    [tristan@asuka wdriver]$ sudo modprobe ndiswrapper
    [tristan@asuka wdriver]$ iwconfig
    lo no wireless extensions.
    eth0 no wireless extensions.
To my knowledge, this should work. But, unfortunately 'wlan' is not showing. I was hoping someone might have some tips or advice to help me resolve this. Any information will greatly be appreciated. If you need anymore information about my system, please ask!
    Thank you very much.

I've been doing a little experimenting and still haven't been able to get wlan0 up. I uninstalled the driver and reinstalled it using the ArchWiki:
    ndiswrapper -i filename.inf
    ndiswrapper -l
    ndiswrapper -m
    depmod -a
(Add 'ndiswrapper' to '/etc/rc.conf' modules section)
    modprobe ndiswrapper
    Still nothing.
    Results of ndiswrapper -l:
    net5211 : driver installed
device (168C:001C) present (alternate driver: ath5k)
But, I have found a few things that might be related to the problem.
When I attempt to run 'ndiswrapper -m' - I get the following error:
    [tristan@asuka ~]$ ndiswrapper -m
module configuration contains directive install pci:v0000168Cd00000013sv*sd*bc*sc*i* /sbin/modprobe ndiswrapper

This pretty much repeats its self for quite a bit.
I've noticed that when I boot my system up, it complains about the following:
    FATAL: Module ath_pci not found
    FATAL: Module ath_hal not found
    FATAL: Module wlan not found
I found a post about my particular card saying to blacklist ath_pci and ath_hal. So I added the following to my /etc/modprobe.d/framebuffer_blacklist
    blacklist ath_pci
    blacklist hal_pci
Still no luck. So I then noticed that these were part of my modules in /etc/rc.conf:
So I then removed them, making my MODULES line look like so:
    MODULES=(r8169 ath5k wlan snd-mixer-oss snd-pcm-oss snd-hwdep snd-page-alloc sn$
    ndiswrapper)
I'm afraid this hasn't resolved the issue yet. If anyone has any advice at all, please share!

  • [SOLVED] Wireless card works, but configuration and software doesn't

    Hi,
I could manage to activate my Atheros wireless card using the madwifi drivers. I wanted to use knetworkmanager, but unfortunatly i doesn't recognize any of my network devices. I've read the other networkmanager threads, changed the daemons order, disabled the network daemon and the routing entry in rc.conf, but still (k)networkmanager doesn't know anything about my devices.
I tried to use knetworkmanager-svn from the AUR. Initially it doesn't work because the SVN URLs inside the PKGBUILD script a wrong, but even after I fixed them I couldn't compile the source, because there is no configure and no Makefile in the svn head. I'm really a noob when it comes to the linux build system, so I had to give it up.
Now I use wifi-radar. It is terribly slow to connect, but it works. However, when I disconnect with wifi-radar, then do 'ifconfig ath0 down && ifconfig eth0 up' the DNS requests fail. I checked /etc/resolv.conf and the default route (set to eth0), but they are right; the interface just doesn't use the name servers. The only way to get it working is to restart the laptop. How does Linux chose a "default interface"?
I'm not afraid of editing text files, but I'd like change networks fast and easy. I don't want to spend hours to adapt to a new access point... I'm really looking forward to the new wlan stack; maybe things will be getting easier then.

Okay, now KNetworkManager works (I forgot adding my user to the HAL group :] ).
There is still a problem - I know it's networkmanager related: At home I'm not using a DHCP server. KNetworkManager cannot handle static IP configuration. However, if I issue the command 'ifconfig ath0 192.168.0.12 subnet 255.255.255.0' while KNetworkManager is searching for a DHCP server I can even ping my gateway, so there is definitely a connection. Unfortunatly KNetworkManager closes this connections after a short period (dhcp timeout). Is there a quick'n'dirty workaround for this issue?
Another problem with KNetworkManager: When switching back to wired network, the DNS server is there :-) but the default gateway is not
    Thanks for suggestions..
    kei
//EDIT: In Debian there is a configuration file called /etc/network/interfaces. KNetworkManager uses the static IP information I enter there. However, when I modify /etc/rc.conf accordingly in ArchLinux, KNetworkManager does NOT use it.
//EDIT 2: After '/etc/rc.d/networkmanager restart' the static IP setting from /etc/rc.conf are used. The problem with the default gateway only occurs when the connection to one of the networks FAILS. After that failure the configuration is kind of messed up.
Altough it seems more like a dirty hack than a definite solution, I'm quite happy with the way it works now.
[CLOSED] <-- maybe I'm blind, but how can I change the topic to "[SOLVED] $Topic" ?

  • Belkin pre n to belkin wireless card bridged to nic to router to emac

Ok, so I have a wireless router (Belkin Pre N) getting it's signal from a comcast modem. One other port is hardwired into my upstairs neighbors computer (PC running windows xp pro SP 2). That computer is generally off.
My set up is an old PC (running win xp pro SP2, 500mhz, 184MB Ram, AMD-K6) which has a belkin wireless G desktop network card with a compaq nic card. I use the network connections window to bridge these two together on the PC. The nic on the PC goes to a "network everywhere" 4 port cable/dsl router (with the firmware updated). The ethernet cable goes from the PC's nic into the 3rd port of the router and the other ethernet cable on port 2 goes into my emacs ethernet port.
Now, I can maintain some connectivity in this manner for my emac. The problem is that I have to leave the network prefs window open to click the "renew DHCP lease" button every 5-10 minutes because I am just suddenly not connected to the network. The odd thing is when I refresh the ip nothing changes. I just get my connectivity back...
Worse, ultimately, I'd say every 4 or so hours, suddenly my PC loses it's wireless connection and stops seeing any neighboring wireless connections (there is many, I live in Chicago) and the bridge suddenly starts getting it's ip from the router between my pc and mac instead of from the wireless card that was connecting to the upstairs belkin pre N. Essentially the network starts working in reverse!. I've tried using the network everywhere router as just a router or even setting it with a static ip with the dns and router configurations from the belkin pre N. I get awesome throughput but in 5-10 minutes it always degrades to nothing on the mac. It is to the point that I keep the network prefs window open on the mac and just periodically click "renew DHCP lease" basically the whole time I am using the internet or downloading something.
Now once the PC loses it's wireless connection I've found the only way to get it back to the way it was is to disable the nic, the bridge, then the wireless and then enable them in reverse order (wireless, bridge, and nic) and it goes back to working correctly... usually once going back to the mac and clicking "renew DHCP lease" I then have 1 more addition to the last number of my ip. Like 192.168.2.3 would then be 192.168.2.4 and so on this continues. The highest I got before reseting all including the router was .2.30
Does anyone know why this is or have a similar set up?
    G3   Mac OS X (10.3.9)   400 Mhz 576MB SDRAM

Easiest solution, get a wireless adapter for the eMac.
Sounds like you don't have ICS configured correctly, and it can do this when using a wireless to wired connection.

  • Using Airport Extreme Base Station As A Wireless Card?

    Hi,
I don't know if this is even possible but here's what I'd like to do:
I've started to share an internet connection with a cousin of mine that lives in my apartment building. The connection is in her apartment and as far as I can tell the wireless signal is coming from the modem she has, there is no stand alone router/ base station. So far I've just been connecting using my iBook with the aiport card in it. No problems. I just had to get the ip number and password from her and I was hooked right up.
    Here's my real question:
I also have a G4 Mini with no wireless card in it at all and an Airport Extreme base station from before we started sharing a connection. In the time that we've been sharing I haven't connected to the internet at all using the Mini. Now I'm wondering if there is a way I can hook the Airport Extreme to the Mini and somehow use it as a replacement for a wireless card in the Mini. Thus using the Mini connected to the Airport to connect just the Mini to the internet.
I'm not worried about the iBook and do not wish to reconfigure the way I'm using/ connecting with it. Everything is peachy with that.
If this is possible, how can I do it?
Thank you in advance for any help with this.

She has an "integrated" modem/router/access point.

Set up the AEBSn as a "bridge" and connect the G4 Mini to one of the "wired" internet connections.

  • Using Extreme as a wireless card

I have a G4 Dual 800 with no Airport card. I also have a UFO Airport Extreme Basestation.
Can I connect the basestation to the G4 and use it as a wireless card to connect to my network?
    Does that make sense?

You cannot use the AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBS) directly as a replacement wireless adapter, but (if your wireless network is created by another AirPort) you can create a Wireless Distribution System (WDS) between them. This would allow the AEBS to wirelessly extend the wireless network of the other AirPort AND enable its LAN port to allow the G4 to access the network/Internet.

    I have it blacklisted.
update: I tried just using the iwl3945 kernel module and it works fine with a little bit of configuration to my network scripts.  Actually, it works excellent.  It seems a hell of a lot faster than the ipw3945d.  Before, sites took a moment to load, but now the forums, as well as djforums.com (another forum I go to), YouTube, etc., come up in literally about a second!

  • Using Express without a Wireless Card?

I would like to use my Express only to stream music from iTunes on my desktop to my stereo. I do not have a wireless card. I thought I could do this but am unable to configure the Express. It is plugged into my network and has a gree light. My desktop is plugged into the same network. However, the Setup Assistant can not find the Express.
    Any ideas?

I believe your computer must have a wireless card in order to setup an Airport Express base station.
I would recommend either having a friend with wireless in a laptop come over and help you set it up. You might also be able to find a friendly store that might help you out.
The settings in the Airport Express stay when you unplug it.
Edit: Nevermind. I see someone found instructions on using the Airport Administration utility.

  • Possible to use non-AT&T wireless card with iPad??

Thinking of getting an iPad, however I travel frequently and after looking at the outlandish prices for international data plans, I am about ready to give up on the idea. Anyone know if it is possible to use a non-AT&T wireless card with the iPad? I'm guessing there would be a compatibility issue of some sort.

The 3G iPad is not locked to a particular service provider. You can get a local Sim card and data plan in many countries. This article will give you some idea of what's available: http://gigaom.com/2010/05/10/ipad-data-plan-guide/

I can not use the internal wireless card with my Mac pro 2012, I don't know if it is broken. The problem is happen recently, I have to use an independent wireless card now. Thanks!

When you enable Internet Sharing in OS X, you are creating a separate sub-net.
There is no option to allow this to be a simple pass-through from Ethernet to AirPort (or the other way).
The problem is easily solved by getting an inexpensive wireless router. You can replace your current router OR disable the DHCP server on the wireless router and allow the wireless clients to get an IP address from the current router.

    Hey, pizzapie22!
In my experience with NoScript, sometimes even if you allow the main site to load JS, some blocked scripts from different domains prevent content from loading.
Does your NoScript icon have a smaller "No" symbol in its lower-right corner? If it does you may have to allow additional scripts.
    Does this help?

  • Do I need a wireless card to use a router with my iMac or does the built in

I am having ComCast install a router at my home and they tell me I'll need a wireless card. I shouldn't need one with Airport Extreme installed should I?

    Right - sort of.
You do need a wireless card to connect to a wireless router. However your Mac already has built-in wireless (almost every iMac does, only the original from 1998 didn't) so you're good to go - you don't need any extras.
