Wireless Cards and Linux

What are some wireless cards that play nice with linux? Something that works out of the box for most distros and Arch? This freaking belkin card isn't working, I'm going to sell it on eBay... Any suggestions?

After recently playing with this myself I actually have some answers... your best bet is to get a wireless card that works with the linux-wlan-ng driver. This page gives you a list of PCMCIA, USB and PCI cards that work with the driver. I got a D-Link DWL-122 802.11b 11 Mbps USB Adapter... after you find an adapter that you like (and works) the key is configuring it.
First of course you want to find the driver that works with your adapter out of the linux-wlan-ng set. My usb D-Link works with the prism2_usb module (driver). Reading the readme helps alot when trying to configure your card. So depending on if your card is USB or PCMCIA you will first have to modprobe your USB or PCMCIA module and then modprobe the corresponding linux-wlan-ng driver.
Example:
modprobe uhci_hcd
modprobe prism2_usb
wlanctl-ng wlan0 lnxreq_ifstate ifstate=enable
wlanctl-ng wlan0 lnxreq_autojoin ssid=<your routers SSID name> authtype=opensystem
dhcpcd wlan0
To get all the packages you need:
pacman -S wireless_tools wlan-ng26 (or wlan-ng24 for 2.4 kernel)
and pcmcia-cs package for PCMCIA cards
All of this will get you started with using a wireless card, but each time you reboot your machine you will lose your network info. So what you probably want to do is use a init script to startup each time you boot. There is a wlan script that comes with these packages located at /etc/rc.d/wlan

Tried every way to install my broadcom wireless card and failed

Hello.. i asked this in the newbie section but didn't get any replies.. i really need help and i don't know where else to go.
i have an hp dv2500 laptop with a Broadcom wireless card.. here is the output of lspci | grep -i net

at first, i tried getting it to work with the broadcom-wl driver from AUR as suggested by this wiki page: http://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Broadcom_BCM4312
i followed all the steps.. however, i did get an error when i tried to exucute this line:
insmod /lib/modules/2.6.30-ARCH/kernel/drivers/net/wireless/wl.ko
and the error was:
error inserting 'wl.ko': -1 File exists ...
i continued despite this error and when i was done, i couldn't detect the card with iwconfig or wicd.. the modules named "wl" and "lib80211" are loaded but i still can't detect it..
i uninstalled, re-installed and i got the same behaviour..

i unpacked the firmware and restarted but i still couldn't detect it.. and i couldn't load the bcm43xx module because arch says was not found..
then i tried the driver after that "b43".. followed the steps on the wiki, restarted, and i still couldn't detect the card with iwconfig or wicd..
i have been trying to get this to work for 3 days now.. i appreciate your time and help in this issue..

Wireless cards and uploading iWeb??

Spent many hours/days trying to upload our new iWeb site to our hosting service (not MobileMe or .Mac) via both Cyberduck and Filezilla. The files start uploading and then after a few minutes, it stops and gives me an Incomplete msg. Our site is mainly text and photos (about 9MB, I believe)- no slide shows, blogs or anything fancy. A fellow at the hosting service suggested that maybe using a wireless card could be the problem. Has anyone had trouble with this???

Well, we switched from using a wireless card to our local internet service which isn't wireless (except for the three feet from our computer to the little black box!). We still had trouble uploading our iWeb site to the hosting service (we switched to HostExcellence). FileZilla (as well as Cyberduck) kept shutting down in the middle of an upload (even when I broke it down into small files). Finally, I worked with one fellow from HE who had me PUT OUR FILES INTO A ZIP FILE AND IT WORKED!!

Wireless card and kernel panic

So for no apparent reason my airport has failed in my powerbook 17" 1.5 w/1.5. It just has no strength to start and seems to loose juice as time in a given session passes. so I threw a wireless card I had in to see how it would fare. The good news is that it works great but the bad news was that I often had to restart it up to 10x to get it to start instead of just going to the kernel panic screen. The functionality is so hobbled without the card that I'm willing to do this every time I restart but it would be great to make everything sing again.The card is a Sonnet card and they have no functional plugin to fix the issue. I'm running 10.4.9 solidly with no other issues and no other problems once i get a clean startup. Any ideas?

Can I pick up wireless (card and antenna questions)

Hello mac community,
I bought a June 2004 G5 (dual 2.5ghz) back in Aug of 2004 and at the time, I had the external antenna that came with it, but I have since lost it. I never used the computer for wireless, nor did I ever need to, and now I'm selling it but my buyers are asking if it's capable of wireless.
I don't know if it is without the antenna, nor do I know if the stock 2.5ghz G5 came with a wireless card in it. Does this mac need a card or would telling them to buy another antenna work? I looked at this page: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1305 to try to find where the card would be (in the front, under a fan, above the RAM slots right?) and didn't see a card in the slot that I know of, though I'm not good with computers.
So can this mac get wireless without a card, but with an antenna? Do I have to have a card? And did the G5 stock 2.5ghz have a card? I never removed the card if it did.

My answers assume you're referring to wireless internet, aka Airport Extreme, 802.11a/b/g/n. In any event, most of this applies to Bluetooth as well.

No.

Yes. And range will be very short (at best) without the antenna.
And did the G5 stock 2.5ghz have a card?
No. Airport and Bluetooth were both optional.
So, it's capable of wireless, but needs the card and antenna to do so. If someone doesn't want to use the official Apple Airport card and antenna ,available here (card) and here (antenna)). An external USB wireless dongle, such as this one can also be used. The USB dongles are generally the only way to support the fastest wireless connection, 802.11n.

Recommended PCMCIA wireless cards for Linux 2.4.20?

I am interested in any suggestions for Cisco (or other!) PCMCIA IEEE 802.11b wireless cards that are compatible with Linux 2.4.20, i.e., an upgrade of the Linux kernel is a last option!
The source files for the driver must also be available. It is preferable if the cards are IEEE 802.11g/n ready also, but this is not essential.

I've always just used the win32 driver with the NDIS wrapper in Linux. While it's not my favorite option, it works.
As for driver sources, if you do find an open source wifi driver for a major chipset like Atheros, let us all know.. :)

Lenovo V560-43422GU laptop - which wireless card and is there HDMI output

Regarding Lenovo V560-43422GU laptop:
(1) Is there an HDMI output? Lenovo sales rep says YES, but Bestbuy.com specs say NO.
(2) Which wireless card is included? Lenovo gave me a list of possibilities, but said the card is actually specific to each dealer/store. Please tell me which one of the following cards will be in the laptop if I buy it from Bestbuy.com.

I see you already posted on the Lenovo forums and they do not have an answer for you right away I love how the tech says he will contact you in a FEW days... and it is their product. I had a smiliar situation with them and it took 3 days lol.
Again, I see you did your searching well... not a lot of information seems available.I guess physically seeing the computer can verifiy this.
Looking at image #4 on the Best Buy site shows there is an HDMI port, but it is covered.... and that concerns me especially when the SPECS say it does not have an HDMI port. I really do not see why it would not have an HDMI port available, even the lower lines of Lenovo z565 and b560 have them available.... it is almost becoming a standard now days for HDMI.

Intel wireless card and Airport Extreme: non compatible

Hi,
just to let you know that after hundreds of test I've found that the new Airport Extreme base station sends non compatible singal that it's not seen by the wireless card of my Acer (the second computer in my home...after a Mac, of course). The card is the Intel Pro Wireless Lan 2100 3b.

i got a dell it worked, i have tested acer with the same wireless lan card (intel BG 2200 mini PCI) it did not work.
with macbook it works, too.

Contec GPIB cards and Linux

Hi,
I am currently using Contec GPIB(F) cards for a number of different
testers. I am interested in running Linux on the PC that the test
equipment is hooked up to. Does any one know if the Contec cards are
compatible with NI488.2 driver that exist for Linux??

distribution (kernel version 2.2.5-15).
I tried to install two drivers, one from the Linux

They are both supposed to work under linux 2.2.x,

Intel wireless card and Channel 13... on a Z61m running windows xp

Hi guys
I need to configure the built-in Intel wireless 3945abg lan card on my Z61m to use Channel 13 to pick up the modem/router for internet access.
I gather it can (from the Intel site) outside the US and inside the US it uses channels 1-11:

I have not found any way to configure windows to select channel 13 on the device settings, nor in the Intel software.

glad you could find one.
If you go to page 80 of the Manual pdf you'll see it's only necessary to pop the battery, palm rest and keyboard off in order to be able to swap the card out, or refer to the relevant movies in the following order; battery first, then palm rest followed by keyboard.

Are you asking about the gray and black antenna connectors? I'd expect them to go on the way they came off the previous card.

Linux compatible chipset wireless card

Okay,
I'm sick to death of my Broadcom Corporation Dell Wireless 1390 WLAN Mini-PCI Card (rev 01)
I'm just curious if there is any company that is looking to cater to the linux market. I'd like my wallet to show my thanks:)
It's not that ndiswrapper is hard to use but even when done I simply can't get it to work and yes I've searched the forum and gone through 4 or 5 different setups........I'm not asking for help on this because plenty has been offered on this board.
My question is: Is there a company that is making pci and pcmcia cards that are linux compatible without having to install some compatibility layer (correct term?) like ndiswrapper? A company that is giving the source code to us so we can have true drivers for our product?
Don't misunderstand this post - I'm not complaining about linux - I just want to support the companies that would like our business.

Unfortunately, that's bulldust, we have every reason to blame Broadcom for their lack of support.
The current drivers utilise the firmware files from the windows driver. And it's in those firmware files that the frequencies live. So no, Broadcom COULD have released a driver, just like the one being developed. This is also how intel, Ralink, TI and other vendors work. All of which have licenses that forbid modification, thus if someone does hack them, they're doing so illegally, and the respective manufacturers can't be held at fault. Heck, the firmware in the broadcom windows drivers, already falls under an equivalent license, so they wouldn't need to even change that.
They could even build one like Madwifi, which has a closed source file which is included at compile time that contains the frequencies. Or just not build shit software based wireless cards, and develop proper ones that work more at a hardware level like the rt2500.
That's not a valid excuse from Broadcom part, not even remotely valid.

Connectivity Issues WRT54G router and 2915ABG Dell wireless card

My wife and I both have Dell Inspiron 600m laptops with nearly the same setup: XP Pro, 2915ABG wireless cards, and the wireless connection is controlled through ProSet Wireless. We have Comcast and connect to a WRT54G wireless router. The router has WPA enabled, MAC address filtering, and the latest Firmware.
I have no trouble connecting to or remaining connected to the router. Her machine connects to the wireless, but randomly loses connection (sometimes it's connected for hours and other times it losses connection in the first five minutes). When I watch the ProSet wireless event viewer, it only says "link down."
To attempt to fix this problem, I have:
played with the router's settings including changing channels
updated her drivers
allowed windows to control the wireless card
reset the router
updated the router's firmware
None of these actions have fixed the problem. The only real differences between the two machines is that I did the following to mine:
My machine was the one that initially set up the wireless router
I used the Comcast install CD on my machine (then deleted all the *junk* that was installed by the CD).
I would like to avoid using the Comcast install CD on her machine because no one needs the extra junk they install. I did set up her machine according to the internet on how to set up Comcast without the CD.
I am trying to figure out if the problem is with the router or with her hardware. Thank you,

Try upgrading the firmware on the router.

TVAC and other TV utilities not recognizing wireless card -- even after reinstall attempts

so first things first, im on a T61p, XP pro SP3, Intel 4965AGN
i guess we'll start from the top...
1.) TVAC works great, im happy.
2.) i go to update all my system drivers through the update utility. wireless driver update hangs midway through, and wont connect on restart. no surprise.
3.) i get the driver on a different machine from the lenovo support page. install, reboot, card works, but only through the windows utility. TVAC doesnt recognize it to configure connections, and it doesnt show up in the FnF5 menu.
4.) attempt to repair TVAC through the control panel. no dice.
5.) uninstall both the wireless card and TVAC, then reinstall in that order. nada. attempt in reverse order. zilch.
6.) attempt 5 in safe mode. still nothing. not showing up. say screw it and use the windows utility, then get pissed when i realize i need static IP switching capabilities.
so, something isnt fully un-installing, or so i'd guess. i'd assume its not a compatibility issue with the new driver, though it could be.
any advice to get it working correctly, even if its retrying a particular step?

someone must know... help!
