Wireless Cascading?

How can I set up a WRT54G router as an access point to boost the signal of another WRT54G several rooms away?
I've read up on the wired cascading... would the setup be similar only wirelessly?
Any help would be much appreciated.

The WRT54G will not act as a repeater from another WRT54G with the stock linksys firmware.  Some third party firmware may support that but if you install any third party firmware on a linksys router it will void any warranty you may have on it.  if you need to extend the range of your wireless network you should just add a wireless access point like the WAP.

  • WRT160N v2 Wirelessly Cascade [help]

Hi - I just started a Verizon FiOS service - and I would like to wirelessly access the network provided by their Actiontec MI424WR from a computer that I have connected to my WRT160N v2 upstairs.
I've been searching all night, and the only information I have come across has told me that this is possible via "cascading" - but I have no idea how to do this.
How do I use my Cisco router to access my wireless network that is already there?
This has been driving me crazy, any help would be appreciated.
Would just like to add in that this article was of NO help to me.

You can not connect two routers wirelessly.  You must use a wire like the article says.

  • Wanting to cascade 2 Linksys WRT310N wireless routers

What would be the most likely settings for cascading a pair of WRT310N wireless routers together so that 1) all computers on the network operate as if it's a LAN, 2) all retain gigabit 'wired' capability, and 3) both routers can also be used as wireless access points (or one as a range extender to the original hooked to the modem)?
I've tried it via the AskLinksys directions with little success.  I had initial success in briefly having internet on the 2nd router-equipped computer (via wired) but had no access to other computers on the LAN (i.e. could not share iTunes libraries nor do file transfers via Appletalk).  Trying to follow the directions and switch the second router to 192.168.2.1 leaves the 2nd router unable to be reaccessed via browser to adjust settings.  It also doesn't appear to achieve anything.  I have better luck with router 2 at 192.168.1.2 in that at least you can access and adjust settings on router 2 thereafter but...  after the brief success in having internet, I've not been able to get internet access on the computers on the 2nd router since (I did happen to have the 3 Macs notice each other but the 2nd pair of Macs on router 2 couldn't surf the internet).
The running tally of devices intended to be included in the network:
3 Macs (iMac and 2 mini's)  -- 1 in one room with a PC, the others in another room together with a Wii.
    1 PC (running XP)
1 XBox 360 (upstairs, sharing router access with the iMac and PC)
1 Nintendo Wii (sharing router 2 with the 2 Mac mini's via wireless)
I also have a pair of Gigabit switches (5 port) I am hoping to include in the network at some point in the event I need room to expand the wired access.  At the moment though I'm more curious about getting both routers enabled and working.  I want to have one be the primary router (connected to an Arris Telephony Cable Modem via Comcast as well as the iMac and PC and an XBox360) and the other work as a switch for additional computers (2 Mac mini's) in another room as well as a wireless access point/range extender (set forth for wireless connection to a Wii).
    Both WRT310N's are running the latest firmware available (v1.0.07 build 014-LS-HNDreplace_date("Dec. 1, 2008");Dec 1, 2008).
Any help would be greatly appreciated!

    1. Connect your modem to Router #1 on it's Internet Port, configure the Router #1 for initial internet access(I hope it is already)...
    2. Do not connect Router 1 to Router 2...Just connect a computer to Router #2 on Port1 and access router #2, change the LAN/Local IP Address of Router #2 to 192.168.1.2(assuming router #1 is running an IP Address of 192.168.1.1) and disable the DHCP/DHCP Server(Router 2) and click on Save Settings...
    3. Connect Router #1 from it's Ethernet Port to the Router #2 on it's Ethernet Port(LAN - LAN Connection)...This way you will have just one network and computer's connected to Router 1 will be able to communicate with the computer's connected to Router 2...
    4. You may now connect your Switch to any unused ethernet port on your router...

  • Cascading WRT300N via wireless

I have 2 WRT300N routers and need to be able to cascade them so that they can connect to the same cable modem.  The instuctions in technical support only explain for a physical connection and in my case the routers are on 2 completely different floors of my home with no means of physical connectivity between them.

in such case it is not possible to connect both the routers using the same cable connection ....
Because ... the router needs internet connection fron modem or router ..... using HARDWIRED connection ...
So one router will work with Cable modem connected to it ... .other will only kept wirelessly .... so i will suggest you to bring WET200 for second floor ..... this is wireless ethernet bridge ...

  • Cascade Linksys BEFW11S4 wireless router to a Linksys EZSX16W switch....

I tried to cascade a wireless BEFW11S4 router to a EZSX16W switch but I can't get it to work. When I first connect it goes online for about 1 minute then after that nothing. I loose my internet wan connection. I connected the uplink on my router to the number 1 port on the switch. My modem connection is on the wan port on the router. Plugged everything in and it goes for about 1 minute then I loose connection. Anyone have any ideas on how I can get this working....THANKS

No you don't need to change any settings on your router. The First thing which you can check when you connect the Modem to the Linksys Router and then your Computers without using the Switch are you able to go Online and check if you are getting Disconnected or not.
Modem - Router - Computer ..... and check the Internet Connection.
If your Computers are able to go online, Then you need to connect the Ethernet cable from the LAN Port 1 of the Linksys Router to the LAN Port No.1 on the Switch, Then connect your Computer to the LAN Port 2 of the Switch.  Once you are done with these connections.. Then you need Unplug the Power from Switch, Router and Modem.. Wait for 30seconds and then first plug the power to the Modem... Wait till all the lights are Solid then plug the power to the Linksys Router and then to your Switch.
Now check if you are Online from the Computer connected to the Switch.

  • Cascade WIRELESSLY from Linksys to Airport?

I want to cascade my Airport Express as follows:
Linksys router (DHCP enabled; IP 192.168.0.1) ----CAT5e cable----> Linksys access point (DHCP disabled; IP 192.168.0.2) ----WIRELESSLY----> Airport Express.
Is this possible? If so, how do I configure my Airport Express?
(The Airport right now is CAT5e-wired to the 2nd Linksys and works fine. But I want to lose the wire between the 2nd Linksys and the Airport.)

I think I see what you're going for though: you want two separate ones so your Linksys network is optimized for your WiFi phones, and your AirPort network is optimized for computers. If you make it all one network (as it sounds like you're going to do) you're really not missing out on any functionality, you're just losing your ability to optimize for one type of device or the other.
What would be awesome for you would be like an AirPort Express that could join one wireless network while creating an entirely different one, then bridging the two within itself. Unfortunately, I'm not aware of a wireless device that can do this.
I have this problem too, mentally letting go of the most efficient way of doing something and settling for a compromise. It bothers me sometimes that things could be faster. In reality though, all your devices will probably work just fine under one network.
Good luck anyway, friend! Happy networking.

  • Home Wireless Router Cascading

I had a WRT610N wireless router that was working fine and just replaced it with a e4200.  Everything on the e4200 is also working fine, as far as I can tell.  I want to redeploy the WRT610N in the far reaches of my home as a wireless hub to add range to my network.  I supposed that I could connect a LAN cable to the 610N get a DHCP address from the e4200 and then pass wireless traffic that connects to the 610N to the e4200.  However it does not seem to work.  I cannot get an IP address from the e4200.
Is using a 610N router as a wireless hub something that should be possible?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Cascading a wireless WRT600N to a wired BEFSR81 to the Internet

Okay, here is an easy one.
I am trying to daisy chain a new WRT600N wireless router to an older BEFSR81 8-port router.  Here is the setup up.  Cable modem is wired to the WAN jack on the 8-port.  5 computers (Win98 or Win 2000) wired into the common ports on the 8-port.  They all can communicate with the 8-port, with each other and to the Internet.  I have now wired common port 1 of the WRT600N into the cross-over uplink port of the 8-port.  The 8-port uses IP  address 192.168.50.1 (submask 255.255.255.0, starting DHCP IP address 192.168.50.70, 20 user max).  The WRT600N uses IP address 192.168.50.100 (submask 255.255.255.0) with DHCP disabled.
Okay, now here is the interesting part.  I have a new Vista laptop that I want to go wireless through the new WRT600N.  If I wire the laptop directly to a common port of the WRT600N, I can communicate with both routers, all the other compters and the Internet.  However, if I remove the cable and go wireless, I can only communicate with the routers and the other computers.  I can't connect with the Internet.  I have set the wireless for WEP encryption.  I have fiddled with the gateway settings, etc., but no wireless Internet.
I seems to me that if I can get there wired, I should be able to get there wireless if I simply disconnect the cable.  The laptop connects with the WRT600N and with the other local computers, but NOT THE INTERNET.  I am writing this message from the laptop in the wired configuration (port 2 on the WRT600N), so I know this much works.  Any thoughts or help here on configuring the WRT600N or Vista would be appreciated.  There is always the secret step!

I would suggest that you re-load the WRT600N firmware using the tftp.exe program.
The instructions for how to get this program, and how to use it are located at:
    http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=3703&p_created=11515...
The instructions are near the end of the post at the above URL.  Look for a section labeled  "Downloading tftp.exe"  and another section labeled "Reloading the Firmware".
Before attempting to use the tftp.exe program, please do the following:
    A)  Power down your entire network.
    B)  Disconnect the WRT600N from all devices.
    C)  Wire one computer (the one with the firmware and tftp.exe program) to a LAN port on the WRT600N
    D)  Power up the WRT600N and your computer.
    E)  Use the tftp.exe program to load the latest firmware.
After the firmware upgrade using tftp.exe, exit the tftp.exe program, power down the router and computer, wait one minute, then proceed to the "reset to factory defaults" using the following procedure:
    1) Power down all computers, the router, and the modem, and unplug them from the wall.
    2) Disconnect all wires from the router, including the computer.
    3) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    4) Press and hold the reset button for 30 seconds, then release it, then let the router reset and reboot (2-3 minutes).
    5) Power down the router.
    6) Connect one computer by wire to port 1 on the router (NOT to the internet port).
    7) Power up the router and allow it to fully boot (1-2 minutes).
    8) Power up the computer (if the computer has a wireless card, make sure it is off).
    9) Try to ping the router. To do this, click the "Start" button > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt. A black DOS box will appear. Enter the following: "ping 192.168.1.1" (no quotes), and hit the Enter key. You will see 3 or 4 lines that start either with "Reply from ... " or "Request timed out." If you see "Reply from ...", your computer has found your router.
    10) Open your browser and point it to 192.168.1.1. This will take you to your router's login page. Leave the user name blank, and in the password field, enter "admin" (with no quotes). This will take you to your router setup page. Note the version number of your firmware (usually listed near upper right corner of screen). Exit your browser.
If you get this far without problems, go ahead and setup the router manually.
If you cannot get "Reply from ..." in step 9 above, your router is dead.
If you get a reply in step 9, but cannot complete step 10, then either your router is dead or the firmware is corrupt. In this case, use the Linksys tftp.exe program to try to reload your router with the latest firmware. After reloading the firmware, repeat the above procedure starting with step 1.
If you need additional help, please state the results of steps 9 and 10. Also, if you get any error messages, copy them exactly and report back.
Please let me know how things turn out for you.

  • Cascading a Wireless WRT300N to a BEFSX41....

Have tried connecting the wireless router to the other router many times by following the instructions received from Linksys and changing the IP Address on the wireless router as instructed. Tried both methods without success. Receive a very strong signal from the wireless router but cannot connect to the internet wirelessly. IP address and DNS 1 & 2 fields are entered as provided by the service provider. Have started over many times without success after resetting the wireless router . Three sessions with live chat left me abandoned two times.
Can any one give me any pointers?

First get the main router (wired or wireless) working fine with the modem. Change the Lan ip and disable the DHCP server of the secondary router. Connection should be from Lan to Lan on both the router. Power cycle the network, it should work.

  • Wireless router cascade

First router is a WRT54G router connected to cable modem.  This WRT54G is transmitting on wireless WPA and works fine.  Second router is WRT54G2 and the ip address is 192.168.1.2 and set as a "router" instead of "gateway".  All settings seem to be working to pass thru for a "wired connection".  The wireless setup of the second router is the exact same WPA but does not seem to be working with the computers in the area of the second router.  Signal strength is poor right in the same room (which is what it was before).  What have I missed?  Thank you for answering....

Make sure both the Router's are connected using the LAN Port's...
Make sure DHCP Server on the second router is set to Disabled...
Wireless channel on Router #1 should be 11 and Wireless Channel on the Router #2 should be either 1 or 5...Do a complete Power Cycle...

  • How to setup Time Capsule as wireless router cascaded under another router

I'm lodged on the second floor of a house where I get one ethernet cable coming out of an old 4-port NETGEAR router (connected to an ADSL modem that) on the first floor. The router gets an IP from the ADSL 87.xx.xx.xx and re-leases on the LAN 192.168.0.2 thorugh 99.
Up here I would like to set up my Time Capsule to create a wireless network. I need to use the connection coming out of the downstairs router.
All configurational combinations of these two routers that I've tried (plenty) are giving me horrible network conflicts between the Time Capsule and the down-stairs router. Even if I use static IP (192.168.1.100) and enable bridge mode on my Time Capsule, I get slow pings and 30% package loss pinging 192.168.1.1 (the router downstairs).
ADSL straight to the Time Capsule and assisted setup works fine so cables and my other hardware seem ok.
I've got access to configure all devices as I wish.
    Thankful for help.

    NO. Things are not ok!
Just as I accepted the package-losses and lowered experienced surfing-speed I realized that I couldn't send mails or upload files to my ftp.
Now I get systematic. I test both my wired and wireless connections with ping and through www.speedtest.net.
    Test
    Ethernet to my iMac:
Ethernet to bridged TC and wireless to my iMac
    Speedtest.net (down)
    1.98 mbps
    1.90 mbps
    Speedtest.net (up)
    1.74 mbps
    0.02 mbps
    Ping* to router
    0.8ms (0% package loss)
    2.5ms (5% package loss)
    Ping* to apple.com
    178ms (6% package loss)
    190ms (5% package loss)
    * Ping averages calculated on 100 pings
What can one conclude / suspect from these numbers? Why does my upspeed drop? I also feel that it's slower to surf wirelessly. I don't feel that the 1.98 to 1.74 mbps drop accounts for that though. I know that conversion to wireless should make for a speed-loss. (I read 10% which seems to be what I measured here).

  • Apple TV 2G (Airplay and Homesharing) can only stream from devices on the same wireless access point range??

    connection:
40 Mbps Fiber Broadband connection using:
    Devices:
    1. Main Modem/router (AP1): Huawei HG8245 (provided by ISP) - Wireless enabled.
    2. Remote Access point (AP2): Linksys/Cisco E3200 Wireless gigabyte router flashed with DD-WRT v24-sp2 (06/14/11) mini (Cascaded -wired- LAN to LAN from main modem).
    3. Wireless Repeater to cover a dead spot  (AP3): Linksys/Cisco E1000 wireless repeater.
    4. Apple Tv (AT2G) with home sharing/airplay enabled.
5.( Ipad) with home sharing on itunes enabled.
    6. Win7 (PC) using iTunes with Home sharing enabled.
all devices are updated to their latest firmware.
In order to cover a large 3 story house with Wifi. I had (AP1) is located on the first floor, while (AP2) is located in the basement floor directly wired by LAN to LAN with (AP1). (AP3) is located on the Ground floor away from the living room to repeat wireless network into the back yard. While (AT2G) is located in the living room on the ground floor right in the middle of both (AP1) + (AP2) while connected via Wifi.
Network SSID, security, passphrase and wireless settings of (AP2) are identical to (AP1) to create a single big LAN/WLAN roaming network where all devices connected to both wireless access points can find/share the others. As understood, it's refered to as bridging.
I have noticed that my iphone/ipad does not show the airplay button anywhere within the wireless network. it seems that the apple TV randomly choses to connect to the AP with stronger signal, or switch to the other in case of a reboot to one of them.
to elaborate further, if i was sitting in the living room (groundfloor), trying to airplay some you tube contents via Wifi to my Apple TV, i may not find the airplay button available all the time, i found out the reason is while i'm wirelessly connected to AP1, the Apple TV was connected to AP2 and both deviced cannot detect each others to enable my purpose. that goes the same for Home Sharing. only if my Ipad/PC and Apple Tv are on the same wireless AP. they would detect each others immediately.
although, the second AP (AP2) is suppose to extend my wireless network of the same subnet in which any device connected can be found.
After all sorts of trial and error tweaking my router/access point, I thought the problem would be due to the Linksys 3200 capability of bridging WLAN and lacks few protocols that enables my purpose. i have flashed the firmware to a DD-WRT, but again, problem was not solved.
I have not tried having my Apple Tv wired to either router/AP, but i assume it may work well if i do so. i still need to solve this wireless connection issue though.
Am i the only one with this problem, would there be something wrong with my setup?
    Your feedback is highly appreciated.

You may or may not already have your network set up correctly, it's just that I can't tell from what you have said.
I have a main router provided by my ISP, I have several other Airport Extremes and Airport expresses connected by Ethernet, all set up to bridge the network created by the main router.
Each maker has their own settings, but bridging should be reasonably obvious. In simple terms my main router distributes IP addresses to all devices, the Airports bridge that network by passing these addresses to the devices from the main router. A base station that isn't in bridging mode will distribute its own addresses to the devices connected to it.
I don't really follow your next point.
instruction for configuration vary from manufacturer to manufacturer, the best course of action here is to refer to the manual. If everything is set up properly the addresses of everything on your network will have identical sets of numbers for the first 3 of 4 groups of numbers that make up an address, the last set must always be different. I think the part you are referring to with your DD-WRT is the option to have Ethernet and wifi bridged or not.
Some routers may be easier to configure than others, but generally speaking they should all work with the Apple TV. 5Ghz is less likely to suffer interference but it is much more likely to be blocked by solid objects, it may or may not be an advantage.

  • Some wireless clients can't discover or connection to local wired systems

    Hi,
I've just upgraded my home wireless from an NetComm NB5540 + modem to a LinkSys X3000.
Internet access works fine for all devices, but some wireless devices can't "see" my Win7 desktop system that's on a wired connections to the router.
    I've tried three devices...
Galaxy Note phone (running ICS 4.0.4) can discover and connect to file shares on my desktop system without any problems.
Asus Transformer Prime tablet (running JellyBean 4.1.1) can see the router on the local network, but can't see my desktop. Even if I manually type in the IP address it can't connect to it
Likewise my old WinXP laptop can see the router but can't see or connect to any other devices.
    Any suggestions welcome.
    Hugh
ps. I tried connecting the NetComm router with just Wifi configured to one of the ethernet ports on the X3000, so I've got two Wifi networks running in parallel. If I connect to this second WiFi network with any of the above devices then they can all discover and connect to my desktop system on the wired connection to  the X3000.

Just to test network connectivity, why don't you ping the wired client from the wireless devices that are not able access it? Do post your results so we can further analyze this scenario. By the way, when you cascaded another access point (using the NetComm router) to the X3000, was it via LAN- LAN? Was the X3000 still the DHCP server for the wireless clients?

  • Hooking up/configuring a WRT54G2 wireless router to my wired modem/router.

Problem description: I have bought a wireless router (Linksys WRT54G2) in order to connect it to my ADSL2+ modem/router (a TP-Link TD8840) to provide wireless internet access to my iPhone and laptop. I only intend to power on the wireless router when I need it, not have it on all the time wasting electricity.
Attempted fixes: Configuring the WRT54G2 per the install CD, but this appears to mean I must have my wireless router always powered on in order to access the internet even when I'm not using the wireless. Ideally I just want to turn on the wireless router as and when I need it.
Operating system: Windows XP Pro (32-bit) SP3.
So, as my description says, I bought a WRT54G2 so I can browse the web on my iPhone using my DSL connection rather than the cellular (3G) network. I currently have the WRT54G2 plugged in from one of its four ethernet ports to an ethernet port on my wired modem/router. The IP of my modem/router is 192.168.1.1, which also appears to be the default ip for the WRT54G2 So I can't access my WRT54G2's admin screen to properly set up the network.
At this point I feel as if I should reset the WRT54G2 to factory settings and start from scratch, but I lack a coherent set of instructions to point me on my way. It's a bit frustrating because I'm pretty good with computers generally, but networking obviously is not my thing. Can anyone please help

    Hi modeski,
To setup your WRT54G2 router and make it work with your modem/router there, chnage first the IP of the WRT54G2 from  192.168.1.1 to 192.168.2.1 before you connect it to the modem/router.
In other words, you are cascading two routers.
    Hope this help!

  • Log In Error and Poor Wireless Speed

    Hello Forum Members,
I just picked up a EA6500 wireless router today and I am a bit disappointed. I paid $199 for this router because I was hoping to take advantage of of fast N speeds and the advanced features it offers.
When I first logged in to set up the router, I saw an amber exclamation point with a note that read "Updating Linksys Smart Wi-Fi Service". When I put my password in I was met with a "Unexpected Error" message.
    Any idea what that means?
Any idea how to fix it?
Also, the firmware updater doesn't work.
Minor issues but I would hope these could be resolved. Now on to the more bothersome issue. Wireless speed is poor. I replaced a WRT160NL router with this one. On my old router using WPA2-Personal (AES) I would see speeds of ~300 Mbps. On my EA6500, I see 120 Mbps. I have checked and double checked all wireless and security settings and don't see anything that looks wrong.
Anyone else see this? Any ideas how to resolve?
    Thanks,
    garrman

    Hi Jibjib,
To say I have cascaded the EA6500 into another router would be inaccurate. I have the VDSL line coming into a 2Wire gateway. I decided not to use the wireless built into the 2Wire because it is wireless G only. The 2Wire gateway is handling the DHCP function. I have disabled the DHCP in the EA6500 so it acts like a switch for wired connections and a wireless access point.
Here is a link to my set up http://www.sbbala.com/uverse/  I used methos 2.
As mentioned above, I had a WRT160NL set up in the exact same configuration and it worked great delivering ~300 Mbps to the next room.
I'm not using the EA6500 in bridge mode as that's not what I am looking to do.
I don't think you would call what I'm doing LAN to LAN. I'm not creating a separate wireless network but rather a wireless access point.
The only changes I made from the stock configuration is to set the EA6500 ip address to 192.168.1.252, renamed both the 2.4 and 5.0 GHz wireless bands and apply WPA2 security. Lastly, I disabled DHCP on the EA6500.
Not sure why this would work on a WRT160NL and not on the EA6500.
Open the first link provided by jlbjlb or click List of common issues with Linksys Wi-Fi and Smart Wi-Fi Routers. I am sure that with that particular link, you can find the information and or suggestions helpful in resolving the type of issue you are having with the router.
