Wireless Connection - Can't choose 'By default, Join: Preferred Network'

Have just bought my partner a second hand PB G4
Am trying to get it to connect to internet and printer via airport to my existing (and working) network (G5, Airport extreme base station and ADSL modem)
On the network prefs pane of the PB the ability to select 'join Preferred network' is grey (says automatic) so I can't select the network I want
Same in Internet Connect
Airport is turned on but says 'no network selected'
Network status pane says internet sharing is on (it isn't) and is using airport to share the connection. Status light is amber
Probably fairly basic but very frustrating. Any advice appreciated
Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

Network status pane says internet sharing is on (it
isn't) and is using airport to share the connection.
Status light is amber
I think you may be a little confused here. Internet Sharing is for one computer to connect thru another. Let's say your G5 had two ethernet ports, one of which was directly hooked up to a DSL modem, over which it did PPPoE to your ISP. You could then use Internet Sharing to connect a second computer to the G5 via ethernet and use the G5's Internet connection.
I don't think this is your setup (although I've been very wrong in the past!). It sounds to me like everything is going wireless and the base station is the one with the Internet connection. So you don't need Internet Sharing at all.
What you need to do is to start at the beginning. Looking at Internet Connect, in the Airport tab, do you have a selection of networks? If you select your ABS, does it show good signal strength?

  • Can't get Airport to join a network

    Hi, all -
I have a G5 PowerPC running the latest and greatest. I connect to the Internet via a 2Wire modem. My G5 is connected via Ethernet. All is OK, except...
...when I try to join my modem's network, I get either a bad password or timeout message. Any ideas? This is inhibiting my ability to configure and use my Airport Express, among other things.
I suppose that I could have a problematic prefs file somewhere. Can anyone tell me which files I could delete to fix this?
    Thanks...

+I'm essentially trying to create an internet connection point in a different room by wirelessly connecting the Airport to my Qwest modem.+
Thanks for the clarification, but as I mentioned, the Airport Extreme cannot perform this function because the ethernet ports on the Extreme are not enabled when you configure it to join another network. It's unfortunate that Apple includes this option in the setup utility, because it's non-functional with the AirPort Extreme.
Ironically, the less expensive AirPort Express "n" version can "join a wireless network" and you do have the option to enable the ethernet port in this configuration. But neither the AirPort Extreme or the Time Capsule (which is an AirPort Extreme with a built in hard drive) allow this type of functionality.
Bottom line, the AirPort Extreme won't do what you want unless you can connect it to your Qwest modem/router using using an ethernet cable, or if it's not possible to run an ethernet cable, you might look at a pair of ethernet powerline adapters. In fact, if your goal is to only provide an ethernet connection to the DirectTV DVR, you don't even need the AirPort Extreme to do this unless you want it to perform other routing functions.

  • Wireless connection drops on 1/2 of computers on network

I have an Apple Airport Extreme N Router setup to feed my NAS wirelessly to all computers on my network. Some computers on the network can sign in wirelessly (Via TP-Link TEWDN3200 USB Adaptor) and connect to the NAS. The other half drop connections all the time and cannot connect to the NAS in any way using the TP-Link USB adaptor or the PCI-e adaptor. (Via Webserver or mapped network drives) Computers which are wired directly to the router can access the NAS without any problems.
    Some more facts:
    - All computers (with and without the problem) are running Windows XP PRO 32 bit SP3
    - Some computers are using a TP-Link TL-WDN4800 with latest drivers
    - All computers are connecting via the Wireless Zero-config service
    - In the 'status' window on the wireless network, for computers that connect fine, the Netnwork ID remains solid and the connection looks stable.
    - In the 'status' window on the wireless network, for computers that can't connect, the Network ID flashes in and out and the network speed bounces between 450.0 Mbps and 200.0 Mbps. Said computers eventually lose connection and then automatically reconnect only to drop out within an hour or so.
    - All PC's are using DHCP and the addressable range is 99 on the NAS. More than enough for 7 computers.
    - All computers are in the same room and the problem is evident no matter which broadcast channel I use or which frequency. (2.4 gHz or 5 gHz) It is now set to automatic in the Airport because it seems the most stable.
    - I installed a WDN4800 PCI-e adaptor into one of the PC's that worked with a USB adaptor and it no longer works with either!
    Very frustrating!
I did some troubleshooting with TP-link, thinking it was their card, but came up with nothing. They think it's the Airport.
The only telltale sign that the PC is not going to work is that Network name in the status window of the wireless connection. If it's flashing: It won't connect. If it's solid: it works flawlessly for weeks on end.
Has anyone seen this issue before? If so: what did you do to fix it?

    SOLVED:
The Airport Extreme is dying. Why it works on some computers and not others is beyond me but, after replacing it, everything works flawlessly. I hope this is covered under warranty.

    Hello Derek
If some hardware components in device manager are not preinstalled properly please visit Toshiba download page under http://eu.computers.toshiba-europe.com > Support & Downloads.
There you will find all necessary drivers (WLAN and sound driver). When the WLAN card is properly installed you will be able to configure WLAN connection.

  • How can I choose what default number my iPhone 4 chooses when I select a number with multiple contacts as a favorite?

Everytime I click on a contact to add to "My Favorites", it randomly selects the info that it will use as a default contact for that number, and recently it's only been choosing the e-mail for FaceTime (which not all of my contacts have) instead of the mobile number, which is what I would like to have it default to for each contact. Please Help!!!

    Go to Phone > Favorites.
Select the + button to add a Favorite.
Select the phone number for the chosen contact that you want to add as a Favorite. You can add the cell phone number and the home number or office number as separate Favorites for one contact.
And I just used the Add to Favorites option for a contact. When I selected Add to Favorites for a contact with more than one phone number entry, I'm provided a list of the phone numbers to choose from for the number to be added to Favorites.

  • Wireless Connectivity can't be maintained for HP2540 Printer

Printer worked fine using my own home router for 2 years. HP2540 printer -  firmware rev CP1FN1333AR. Win 8.1 OS  Recently switched to service where ISP provides router and printer will not maintain connectivity beyond a single print job. Have 1) reset printer and router via power downs - several times 2) confirmed latest HP printer updates are on printer, 3) run HP Scan Doctor s/w and connected via USB cable to load new network settings 4) 'uninstalled' and resinstalled printer on PC and network 5) successfully printed HP Network Config Page following a wireless install. Connectivity then drops and Scan Doctor indicates 'no connnected printer' and refers back to USB and wireless install routines, neither of which has fixed problem. All net settings (IP Addresses for printer, gateway etc look OK, SSID matches net name, sig strength is good, channel 11 assigned. Bottom of Gen'l Information section of HP Net Config page indicates Internet 'Not Connected' and has a warning 'Web Services require the printer to have a connection with Internet connectivity'. I'm only trying to print local PC generated docs however.  Have gone through most of the HP section at URL - http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c02790693 for this printer, much of which is noted above. Any suggestions?

Thanks for your suggestion - I had not changed channels as HP Net config printout had indicated signal quality as '5' on a scale of 1-5. Ran a built-in Wi-Fi modem test which indicated Channel 11 (the one in use) rated 88 (100 max) on the self test, but best channel was 2 (at 94 rating). Changed to Channel 2 and dedicated an IP address (virtually the only other step I had not completed in the HP procedure) while I was in the router config section. Turned off printer and when it indicated a wireless channel had been acquired, ran HP Scan Doctor again, and rec'd 'no connected printer' msg yet again. Ran the 'advanced' Scan Doctor retry option at that point and rec'd diagostic response that 'One Note' was my selected default printer (which did not square with Control Panel indication that my HP2540 was the default. Scan Doctor offered to enable my HP2540 as the default printer and things now appaer to be working. Not sure just which of these items fixed my problem, but you deserve the credit for identifying something that I had not considered, and thus leading to the solution (either directly or indirectly). My thanks for your assistance and I will provide 'thumbs up' and 'solved' status to your post.

  • Can I choose the default calendar for new events?

I have multiple calendars in iCal. When I create a new event on the iPod, it always defaults to the same calendar, but it's a less frequently used calendar so that's rarely the one I want. Is there a way to set the default calendar to my most frequently used calendar so I'm not having to change to a different one on a regular basis?

On the iPod you can select the default calender: Settings>Mail..>Calenders (Scroll to bottom of the Mail... screen).

  • Wireless Connect - Can't "Log In"

Having a few issues with wireless. I have a Broadcom 94311 (revision 1) card setup using the b43 driver. On my Fedora install everything works great. I use nm-applet to connect. I am able to "connect" my University's wireless network just fine - network manager shows I'm connected, gives my IP address, my laptop's wireless light comes on, etc.
However, we are required to authenticate before being able to actually use the network. This is done by automatically redirecting to a landing page where I put in my school username and password and then wah-lah - fully connected!  Unfortunately I am not redirected to this page when using wireless under Arch. Instead I get the usual page which shows up when having no connection. Does anyone have thoughts on how to fix this?

    Sorry for the delayed reply.
That doesn't work, unfortunately, Zenlord. I wish it were so simple.
Are there any other thoughts? I'm about ready to give up. I've got this card to work in two other distros. A laptop isn't much good with wireless internet, unfortunately.
According to Conky's network monitoring and iwconfig I have a connection. However dmesg gives this:

  • Wireless device can't get IP address for Guest network

I have a wireless network setup at my main location.  The access points allow Internal and Guest access.  The Internal access uses DHCP from a Windows Server.  The Guest access looks like it uses DHCP from my ASA, I did not set this up originally.  My question is... I am installing a new WAP in a branch location.  I can get the Internal access to work because it uses the Windows Server DHCP.  I cannot figure out how to get the Guest access configured to use the DHCP from the ASA.  The ASA is on a DMZ.  Any help would be appreciated.

  • HP210a print jobs fail over wireless, but can still print Test Diagnostic page over network

Help!  I cannot print over the wireless network anymore.  When I try, the print job queues up and I get "Error - Printer" message.  I can print the Test Diagnostic page just fine over the network.  I can also print fine when connecting via USB port.  I have the latest firmware.  Any ideas?

  • Dropped connection/can't find my network

my macbook drops connection at least once an evening. i'm using a linksys wireless-g router via comcast cable modem.
the dropped connection is irritating, but im more aggravated by an even stranger problem. when i attempt to reconnect, airport can't find the linksys router. it tells me this in an error message. THEN, it finds some netgear network and connects at near dial-up speed.
what is going on? is airport finding one of my neighbors router's and connecting to their network? and why can't find my router when i'm sitting in the same room with it. and why does my connection keep dropping?
is there a tutorial anywhere for setting up a macbook to interface with linksys router? i feel like everything needs to be explained to me from square one again.

the dropped connection is irritating, but im more
aggravated by an even stranger problem. when i
attempt to reconnect, airport can't find the linksys
router. it tells me this in an error message. THEN,
it finds some netgear network and connects at near
    dial-up speed.
Open the Network section in System Preferences, then under Airport, select "By default, join preferred networks" and add your airport network name to the list (it should be first in the list, if you ever have reason to add more than one).
That should keep it from going looking for the strongest signal, which may at times be your neighbor's.
what is going on? is airport finding one of my
neighbors router's and connecting to their network?
and why can't find my router when i'm sitting in the
same room with it. and why does my connection keep
    dropping?
Interference can cause dropped connections. Like your phone; see below. Or your neighbor's phone. Or your neighbor's WiFi on the same channel.
A utility called iStumbler may be of help to see if there are other strong WiFi signals on the same channel as you.
    http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/11753
I have seen some posts that a firmware update on the router solved some connection dropping problems.
oh, and one more thing. when i dial my cordless phone, my connection drops.
Some cordless phones operate on the same frequency as WiFi. You can try changing your Airport channel, trial and error. (Airport Admin Utility) My phone is like that, and there's no way to set which channels the phone uses. I settled on Channel 11 for my Airport.
