Wireless connection falls asleep..

So when the tv goes on standby (screensaver active, not been used for X hrs), then come back to use it, it often drops off the network. All the other wireless stuff (iBook, MBP, PCs, iPhones etc) are still running fine, and connected without probs.
So looking in the Network options, the signal strength has no bars at all, even tho the base station is on the other side of the wall. If I go to the Configure Wireless options and wait for the list to refresh, it often wakes up the wireless connection (altho sometimes doesn't work, so have to re-enter all the details), then the signal strength comes on full, and it soon restores back to normal.
Is there anything that can be done to stop the wireless card (?) falling asleep like this, and for it to just stay connected?

thanks for the suggestions. I've extended the DHCP lease and see how that goes, if that doesn't work, then I'll try the static IP.
I did have it connected via ethernet which was awesome n quick, and never a problem.. But we moved house so the new layout doesn't really allow easily for a lead to it, as much as I'd like to do that. The base station is literally 6ft on the other side of an internal wall, so no noise/distance probs..
Will see how this goes and report back in a few days!
Cheers!

IMac 20' connected trough cable to a Netgear Router. Working regurarly no problems at all. If I leave the computer without touching it for less than 10 minutes, all the Apple application loose connection with internet (Safari, Mail, App store) while Firefox or Vuze for example continues to work. To restore I have to Activate AirPort anf then I can deactivate, or unplug and replug the ethernet cable. If I connect trough AirPort this problem does not show up.
When Safari loose connection, I use the "diagnose network problem" and it shows that the internet connection works regularly. I tought initially it was a Safari problem and I cleaned up cache and cronology with no success. Now I realized the problem is also showing with Mail and the new App Store.
The router is pretty new and the problem was present also with the previous one (Dlink 624GT).
Anybody can help ? It's an OS bug ? Something related with bonjour ? It does not seem like an hardware problems, since third party application work correctly.

  • Display falls asleep and won't wake when connected to new Haswell MBP

For over a year now I've used my 2007 Macbook Pro and my 2004 20in Cinema display together. I woud dock my macbook pro and just use my cinema display as my main display.
I attempted to do this with my brand new macbook pro today. Purchased a Mini Display port to DVI adaptor and I can get the display to appear on my the 20in Cinema Display, but when I close my laptop it falls asleep and so does the monitor. I've been able to wake it up for about 10 seconds but then it'll fall asleep again and I can't wake it up any longer.
Has anyone had a similar issue like this and is there a solution out there?

  • Airdisk falling asleep and not waking up

what i thought might be a partitioning error/issue might be another thing altogether... let's start from the top. lots of random details follow, but something might be the kicker.
i have an older AEBS (non-dual-band, non-giga-bit, circa 2007) in another room (garage -- with all of the other panels, switches, etc.) that distributes a signal to the whole house -- specifically to two airport express base stations (delivering music, printer sharing, etc.). the AEBS is sending out a G/N signal (for iphones, network cameras, etc.) and one of the expresses is sending out an N-only (for my macbook).
the purpose of the AEBS is three-fold. (1) to provide wireless connectivity (2) to serve as a conduit to a backup airdsk for (a) general computer/home theater backups and (b) a consistent repository for a network (security) camera feed fed through "security spy" via a mac mini (home theater hub) which is hard-wired to the network via whole-house ethernet (belkin hub in the garage ties it all together). the camera itself is wireless (G-speed).
over the past few weeks, i've been getting very poor throughput on the wireless network -- speed bumps back up (from <1bps to >20mbps) when plugged into the ethernet network (as viewed through speakeasy's speedtest).
ok. the issue is that the new 2TB lacie harddrive is going to "sleep" and not waking up. it works fine for about 1/2 hour after hookup or "hard" wake-up (restart AEBS/drive).
previously (as few as 5 weeks ago, i had a smaller lacie drive (1TB) serving the same function flawlessly.
so... is this new airdisk issue due to:
-- the AEBS not liking the 2TB size?
-- the AEBS giving signs of failure (esp. with the network issues noted above)
-- is the new lacie drive either (a) a DOA-failure or (b) doing its job by falling asleep (if so, it'd be a new 1TB>>2TB feature)...
    -- user error
    -- something completely random...
thanks for any wisdom you can lend...

I have pretty much the same setup with the same model AEBS and I get the same problem with a 2TB Western Digital drive plugged in. I solved this problem a month ago by updating my system to Snow leopard and updating firmware to the base station and rebuilding pretty much the whole network. But it came back this weekend. Is driving me crazy!
(Side note: I also use that drive as a wireless Time Machine backup but can only get it to work reliably with my wife's Macbook not my own- which actually worked for a weekend but then decided that was enough.)

  • WVC54GCA Wireless connection drops off everyday.

I have to restart the camera everyday beacuse it looses it wireless connection. I don't have a lenght of time it stays connected. I'm using a Linksys WAP54G connected to a RVS4000 router.  I see others are haveing the same problem.  My laptop stays comnnected so I don't think it is the WAP.

You shouldn't have to do this, if you give each camera a fixed IP.
I have 4 cameras, I'm using one on a cable and the other 3 wirelessly.
The wireless ones  all drop off and fall asleep at anytime during the day/night, but the one on thr cable doesn't.
I think, it's a communications/handshaking problem within the wireless network. When the wireless signal fluctuates too much, the cameras don't come back.
I solve this with a ping to the cameras. The first ping usually comes back dead with 100 % packet loss.
The second ping may take 3000 ms.
The third ping usually gets them back to normal, around 2-3 ms.
All is good after that (for a while).
I don't seem to have that problem, when the cameras are streaming. Sometimes I get a short break in the stream after a while. I've put this down to heat developing in the camera, but I'm not sure.
Anyway, Ithink, a static IP is a must for these cameras, if you use them wirelessly.
    Cheers

  • Mac falls asleep while ordering Photobook

I use an iMac G4 with the latest OS and iPhoto.
When ordering photobooks, I experience my mac falling asleep (i.e. 'lighthouse mode'). My internet connection is wireless, and I know the Mac sometimes looses the connection with my airport; but finds it back my itself. iPhoto can handle this; it just stalls sending, and continues automatically.
The mac itself however falls asleep after 1h no activitiy; but iPhoto running and having network activity doesn't mean 'now activity'.
I can overcome the problem by switching of sleeping in energysaving options; but it's anoying.
I also experience it sometimes with programs like Realplayer.
Does anyone know how mac defines 'activity'; and how I can overcome this issue?

    Martijn567:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. I don't know how Apple defines "activity" but I know that you have to turn of the sleep option when you're encoding and/or burning iDVD projects to disk image or directly to disk. So it seems to be a system wide issue for operations that rely primarily only on CPU work. It's just the nature of the beast.
    Do you Twango?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.

  • Not the average problem with wireless connection. Please help me..

I've been having wireless connection problems ever since I upgraded to Verizon FiOS from Verizon Wireless. Before upgrading to Verizon FiOS in the fall of 2012, my brother's laptop connected just fine with the connection. After upgrading to Verizon FiOS, my brother's laptop could not connect to the internet. It showed the wireless connection signal as Excellent, but I could not access the internet. Either it would be extremely slow or there would be no connection at all. Also, the router would sometimes restart itself randomly, and it was extremely annoying for me since I am hardwired with my desktop.
This was weird because my iPod Touch connected perfectly fine to the wifi. So I thought it must be the laptop. But I brought the laptop over to my cousin's house, who also happens to have Verizon FiOS, and the laptop connected perfectly fine. I called Verizon and none of the technicians knew what the problem was. We tried disabling and enabling the router, changing the channels, and anything that was on the list. They couldn't help me and I was extremely disappointed because not only am I not accessing the internet with my brother's laptop, but I am also paying for the service too. The last technician I called in 2012 decided to send me a new router. I hoped this would work, but it did not. This router, too, would completely reset itself numerous times before settling down and letting me use the internet.
I gave up after that. But in the spring of 2013, I got really fed up with the service I was receiving and I decided to call Verizon again. Again, Verizon tried to help me fix the laptop with their tools and solution guides. But nothing good came out of it, so I decided to ask for a technician to come to my apartment to fix it. We scheduled a day and I was pretty excited since I was almost positive that the connection for the laptop would be fine by then.
I was wrong. The technician came and only stayed for about 20 minutes. He said it must be the laptop or it must be that the walls are too thick in my apartment. But that can't be it since, in my cousin's house, the router is on the second floor and my brother was using his laptop on the first floor. So it couldn't be the laptop nor the house. So we came to no conclusion. He just attached a mini router to the laptop and hardwired it. I wasn't so content but I was glad my brother could finally use the internet now.
About three months pass by and I decide to get myself a new laptop. I get it and I am hoping the wireless connection works. It did, so I was almost positive that it was my brother's laptop that was the problem, not the wireless signal. I go on vacation for a few days and I connect perfectly fine at my friend's house. When I return home and try to connect to my wireless connection, it didn't work!
At this point, I am extremely frustrated. I decided to call Verizon again to replace my router because it was being extremely annoying. It kept resetting itself and I was tired of it. I replaced the router, and this is the router I currently have, but I STILL have the same problem. It resets itself on its own time and I hate it because I'm always in the middle of something. Wow, just wow. There is nothing they could do to help me fix this. I call up a technician, for the millionth time, and he tells me he can't access my router. This occurred with the previous technician who sent me the new router. He tells me his tools are not working and tells me he'll call me back the next day.
It was the next day and I did not receive any phone call. I am extremely disappointed in Verizon FiOS' service and it's customer service. I leave it alone and I just hardwire my laptop to the router. Of course this works, but what's the point of having a laptop when I have to keep it hardwired on my desk? After a day or two, I decide to check if the wireless connection works, and it did. I was surprised. But every now and then, it would shift on and off. Most of the time, the wireless connection is either EXREMELY SLOW or I get none at all, nonetheless, it still says the connection is Excellent.
Please, if there is anyone who could help or try to help me, I would most appreciate it. If there is more information that you need, ask me and I will try my best to provide it to you.

Admittedly, that IS a strange case. Unfortunately, it sounds like all possible troubleshooting has been done by the tech support agents. you mentioned that you were dissatisfied with your other service, did it have a similar problem? theres a possibility of dirty fiber or a bad ONT port, but the random rebooting of the router would almost exclusively be a bad router. question: is the router in the same location as before?

  • Nokia 5800 - Loses the wireless connection

    Hello.
I have a Nokia 5800 cellphone from a week ago.
I have a problem with the WIFI (Wireless connection).
If I connect to a WIFI, in approximately 5 minutes the connection hangs, losing the connection. It seems random hangs.
It happens in all applications, and I have to connect again.
I tried with several different connections (WIFIs), and the same result.
Sometimes it stays connected longer, but generally falls.
Anybody know it can be, and the solution?
    Thank you very much.

I have had this happen as well sitting right across from my router. Can be working fine and then all of a sudden kicks me out to the home screen. Since there is no connection failure message I have to conclude that it is a random bug, possibly with the built in browser. I have not tested this with Opera Mini yet to see if it is hardware or software related.
If I have helped you with your problem in some way, please take a little time and hit the kudos button in my post. Without your feedback, I don't know if I am being helpful or should just be put out to pasture.

  • !!!DATA LOSS!!! Lion falls asleep, breaks active shared drives

Lion falls asleep and breaks active connection to shared drivers. This is from Snow Leapeord that is reading/writing to a drive being shared by Lion. If I don't have someone present, moving the mouse on the Lion machine, the connection will die a horrible death and any data reading/writing stops in its tracks. Nice?

    scarroll wrote:
My only compliant is STILL DATA LOSS!!! Networking between Snow Leopard (multiple machines) and Lion is highly unreliable. Connections still drop, resulting in half file transfers and complete DATA LOSS. This doesn't happen between Snow Leopard machines, only between SL and Lion. The fact that this happens at all makes Lion simply unworthy of use. My only work around thus far is to abandon Lion. It is simply not usable.
It doesn't happen between Snow Leopard and Lion either. Quoting http://support.apple.com/kb/ht1776 :

  • G5 Randomly Falling Asleep

Seems my 2.7ghz dual PPC G5 tower running 10.5.8 sometimes falls asleep on it's own while I'm using it... I have to press the power button to wake it up - Bluetooth mouse and keyboard lose connection when this happens. I have set the Energy system prefs to 'never' fall asleep and it still does it.
I'm wondering if this is some kind of safeguard or something? Maybe I'm overheating? It's definitely not a case of staying idle too long. Seems to do it most when I'm using processor intensive software.
Can anybody tell me why this is happening?

    Get freeware Temperature Monitor.
    http://www.bresink.com/osx/0TemperatureMonitor/download.htm
What's going on when this happens? Are you doing something highly CPU intensive? I see you answered this.
Seems to do it most when I'm using processor intensive software.
Then that could be temp related.
Not sure about the G5 Tower, but just to get an idea, an iMac G5 CPU has to get up to 85C before it starts sleeping or shutting down.

  • Losing wireless connection with Time Capsule

    Hi,
Yesterday I purchased a 500GB Dual Band/Guest Networking Time Capsule (the newest model). The TC set up properly - I have it set up to join my wireless network and share my external HD - but during backups or streaming media from the external HD, it loses the wireless connection and stops. At this point, the TC is no longer viewable in the AirPort Utility and I have to reboot it.
I've read other articles and threads stating that downgrading to the 7.3.2 firmware version will correct problems like this, but because mine is a newer TC version, I can't do this (7.4.0 is the earliest available). Is there any way to solve the constant wireless connection loss?

    Leask, welcome to the discussions!
The problems that you are experiencing are likely a combination of signal strength and interference from other networks and possibly cordless phones. You will need to experiment to find the best settings for your environment as there are no set rules or fixes for any given situation.
Assuming that security settings are compatible within a network, good wireless performance depends on two main factors: adequate signal strength and lack of interference from outside sources and other networks.
Download iStumbler, www.istumbler.net, to get a look at your wireless network. The application will show you the signal strength of your network (and noise).
If you have a laptop, move around your house to see how the signal strength at various points changes. If you find an area where the signal strength really starts to fall off rapidly, you either need to move your device closer to the broadcast point or consider purchasing an AirPort Express to "extend" the broadcast power of the Time Capsule.
The signal strength indicator on your computer(s) or iPhone is generally not a very good indicator of the actual signal strength on your network.
Perhaps more importantly, see if there are other networks in your area and identify what channels they are operating on. This is a primary source of interference in addition to cordless phones, microwave ovens, and some security cameras.
If you find that there are other networks using the same channel or an adjacent channel as your network, use AirPort Utility to change the channel that Time Capsule is broadcasting on to another channel that is as far away from other channels as possible. This may be very difficult if you live in an area crowded with other networks.
There are also features on many new wireless routers that enable a user to "hide" the network name, so it is possible that there are other wireless networks causing interference that you cannot identify.
Your Time Capsule is capable of broadcasting a wireless signal at 5GHz, much higher than the normal crowded 2.4GHz networks. But, I'm not sure if your computer(s) are compatible with this setting. Wouldn't hurt to give this a try. A number of users have found that they have much less difficulty on the higher band since it is (for now) much less crowded.
Please post back on your progress.

Everynight Im On The Phone With My Boyfriend And We Both Fall Asleep, But When We Wake Up The Phone Has Hung Up But Neither One Of Us Hung Up... Why Is That?

  • Wifi won't stay on if computer falls asleep

When my computer falls asleep the wifi won't stay on.  I have to turn Wifi off and then back on for it to connect to the internet.  Anyone have this problem?  Anyone know how to fix it?

My MBA will often disconnect from the wifi while it's asleep --especially if I close the screen rather than leaving it to fall asleep with the screen open. I then need to go to the menu, find the home network, select it, and reconnect. It's not a big deal for me, but I can see how it might be for others.
Not sure if that's the same thing as what you have, but if it is, then yes, I have that problem too. And no, I'm afraid I don't know how to fix it.

  • Often lose wireless connection when using HDTV as monitor

I have an unusual wireless networking problem when using my Samsung HDTV in my living room as a monitor for my MacBook (when watching Internet TV shows, for example). Frequently when I switch URLs, networking freezes, even though the connection appears strong, with the Airport symbol at the top of my screen showing all bars. To re-establish the wireless connection, I have to go through the process of re-joining my network through the “Join Other Network" option. The signal holds as long as I don’t try to change it, as in selecting another URL.
I connect to my HDTV via HDMI cable, using a mini-DVI to HDMI adapter from my Macbook’s video-out port. The audio connection is a mini-plug from the Mac’s headphone out jack to stereo RCA plugs associated with the TV’s HDMI port.
The wireless connection is through a Lynksys Wireless-G 2.4 Ghz, 54 Mpbs Broadband router.
I’d appreciate any solutions the Apple user community has to offer.

I'd say this has nothing to do with your display. The problem will likely lie in either your router settings, network settings or a simple signal strength issue. Try first changing the broadcast channel on your router, and make sure all settings are correct for your desired network.

  • Can't configure Wireless Connection to HP OfficeJet Pro L7780

I recently purchased both my iMac 24" 2.8GHz computer with OS x 10.5.2 and HP OfficeJet Pro L7780. I was able to use the HP setup CDs for my Windows laptops and configured them to use the printer in a wireless configuration.
The iMac is creating the headache (actually I think it's HP causing the headache). When I try to install HP's driver 9.7.1 using their utility, it is unable to detect the L7780 in a wireless configuration. The moment I connect via USB or wired Ethernet, the printer is detected without a problem. My printer is located @ 192.168.1.30, fixed IP address via a NetGear FSW308 switch. My iMac is fixed @ 192.168.1.100 and the gateway is 192.168.1.1
I spent hours on the phone with HP support and am still in the same spot... HP software won't find the printer when it is wireless. I can configure OS x 10.5.2 to use the internal L7700 series driver and put the IP address in the dialog box. The printer prints without issue using the OS printer drivers, but the other features such as scan and fax will not work without the HP software.
I can ping the printer and I can connect to the printer's EWS, but the HP software will not find the software.
Overall config: iMac wireless network connection to switch; Printer also wireless connection to switch.
So far HP is dumbfounded and all they can say is that I should call Apple because the printer software works fine when I connect the Ethernet or USB cables.
    HELP!
    Thanks,
    Roland

Thank you for the thought. Yes, although my SSID is public, I have a WEP 128-bit security key. The printer, the iMac and my Windows laptops all connect to the wireless network without issue, as evidenced by my Windows laptops and iMac (if I use the driver included with OS X 10.5.2).
I can ping the printer from the iMac as well as connect to the printer's web interface, so connectivity exists. It is as if the setup software or the printer are trying to communicate using a port that or service that OS X may be blocking.
My OS X firewall is configured to accept all connections though... so that shouldn't be the issue unless there is a bug in accepting all connections.
    Thanks,
    Roland
