Wireless connection works only on Windows

I am lucky if while running my Mac OS I get wireless internet connection for 3 seconds all day. In Windows XP, though, I connect and stay connected. Why is that? I have all things updated for both opperating systems.

I am having the same problem. Often, when I boot it up, it does not connect to my router although my Macbook and WinXP laptops do. Sometimes, if I leave it for about 2-3 minutes, it will spontaneously connect, at other times I have to re-enter the SSID and wep key for it to work. Hopefully it is only driver related and they come out with updated drivers soon.
Does it work any better with an Airport extreme? I am thinking of getting one only because I can plug an external hd into it (for shared backup purposes). I currently use a Linksys WRT54G router which works fine for everything else.

On my Dell Latitude D620, Windows XP 32 bit system and my 6510 printer wireless connection (Linksys EA4500) , everything works fine after the computer is booted.  After a period of time (usually overnight), I lose connection to the printer (the scanner icon with a red x is shown on my Windows task bar and I can't print.  Ran Windows Fix and the HP fix programs.  The only thing that solves it is to reboot the computer.  A second symptom is that my IE8 stops connecting to the internet at the same time (gives a 'waiting for' response that never changes).  Firefox still connects OK when this is happening.  So I suspect the problem isn't with the printer, but with my Windows set up.  It is a fresh XP SP3 install (hard drive crashed, but it happened before also).  I reset IE, checked my proxy, no malware, happens with or without firewalls and security programs.
Hoping that someone else has run into this problem.  Been all over Google, and the IE doesn't work / Firefox works is fairly common, but none of the fixes helps.

If you want you can reload Firefox 4.0 or the last "old" version is 3.6.16 and is available here:
    http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html
Just reinstall your choice of FF. The bookmarks are in a different directory and are NOT overwritten. Some of the Add-ons that worked in 3.6 DO NOT work with 4.0, pay attention and head any warnings when you start 4.0.
I had to disable extensions: Flashblock and WOT
Firefox SafeMode? - A troubleshooting mode.
1.You can open the Firefox 4.0 SafeMode by holding the Shft key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut to open it again.

  • Wireless connection 'local' only - problem solved

I had problems making a wireless connection to my new BT Homehub3. Ethernet connection fine. Wireless stopped at 'local' connection and no internet access. I read many forums, spent over an hour with BT's helpline in India (extremely competent) but to no avail. The BT guy took over my laptop and tried everything imaginable but no success. The consensus on the forums was that there appears to be a compatability issue between Windows Vista and some hubs (not specifically BT).
I found the solution in an obscure Windows Update - an optional one from 2010 that I hadn't noticed. This had the name of my wireless card (Atheros) in the title which I wouldn't have recognised until this BT Hub problem arose. Downloaded the specific wireless card update and I'm now using the wireless connection to send this post.
Might be worth checking for your own wireless cards just in case. Hopefully BT engineers might find this info useful.

The original poster has not returned to the forum since December, however if you connect your computer using an Ethernet cable, then go to the Windows update page and ask it to look for updates, there should be an "optional updates" section, remember to download all the critical ones first.
Look at "hardware updates" and see if it shows the update for your wireless card.

  • Lenovo G400s Wireless Connection Limited Access on Windows 7 Ultimate - 32 bit

Just bought Lenovo G400s, install windows 7 ultimate - 32 bit on it.
It turns out the wireless network driver need to install manually, the disc driver that came with laptop was for windows 8.1. So I went to lenovo website, put on the series and download the wirelss network driver which is around 250 MB.
I installed the driver and connect to the wireless network. My office wireless was on security and use static ip. I changed the ipv4 ip static already. It connected for a while, 1-2 second then lost connection. I checked with ping to google, got 2 records of live connection which is very short. After that it try to reconnecting itself again and again with status said "Limited Access"
I search in google, read some forums about problem in different series, so I use another computer go to Intel website to download latest driver. Got it installed, but it's still the same.
I try download broadcom driver, but it's really different and doesn't work at all.
Now I don't know what to do.
    Windows 7 Ultimate - 32 bit
    Inter(R) Centrino(R) Wireless-N 135
    Driver Provider: Intel
    Driver Date: 1/26/2014
    Driver Version: 15.11.0.7
Digital Signer: Microsoft Windows Hardware Compability Publisher
What makes it weird, although from intel website said the driver date is in 3/21/2014, and the version is 16.11.0, but this information I get from device driver was different.
    Here's the intel's website if you're wondering:

    Solved!

Today I want to install windows 8.1 on it, because the laptop came with windows 8.1 driver disc.
However, I try the wireless connection once again , one final try before I clean install the OS.
It turns out the internet connection is connected. Ping is quite stable, got a small drop. Nonetheless, IT'S CONNECTED!!!
I don't know what happened, I tried thousand ways yesterday and gave up. Today I don't set anything just try connecting with static IP set the ipv4 just like I did yesterday, and it connects without hassle!! is there a pc fairy or what?
The possible way I can think of is the router's internet connection's got restarted since It's a new day at office.
Despite how it solved still mystery to me, I think I mark this thread as Solved.

  • [REOPEN] netcfg wireless connection works on the second start only

    Hi,
subject tells most of it. I have a HP 8510w with a fresh installed arch setup. I migrated the default network connection to a netcfg-based setup. I set my home wifi settings (WPA128bit), and start netcfg. It fails after a timeout with 'Wireless association failed', and right after a quick netcfg restart connects without any problems.
Any idea how to get around this problem?

I can reproduce this here and started experiencing this myself recently. I'll see what I can do...
In the meantime, update to netcfg 2.1 (core) and see if the quirks on the wiki help.

  • Wireless connection to my Laptop (Windows 8) and my HP 5520

My HP 5520 all in one printer is having problems connecting wirelessly  (it may be since I had BT Infinity router installed) I get message unable to connect to printer, but when I check the printer window says printer is connected to the correct IP address,If I switch printer off & back on again all is fine for a while until I have a break from printing of half hour or more when I get the same message,I can also restore it by using the wireless set up proceedure & pressing the button on the router, but again it seems to lose contact after a break of half hour or so,I have been on to  Know How team as printer is under guarantee but they dont seem able to help  ????

    Hi Mick25,
I have seen the IPV6 cause interference before, often times turning this feature off will resolve the issue.
On the front screen of the printer please touch the Wireless icon. There are 4 icons across the top, the Wireless is the second one from the left. In the Wireless Menu, arrow down to Advanced Settings. I would like to turn off the IPV6, arrow down to IPV6 and select OFF.
If this does not resolve the issue, you may consider setting a static IP. Use the following link for instructions written by PrintDoc.
Please let me know if one of these solutions resolves the issue. I will gladly follow up if you require further assistance.

  • Why does VPN connection work differently in Windows 8.1 than in Windows 7?

    I have the following situation:
I run a Windows 8.1 64-bit and Juniper VPN Client. There is a cable connected to my laptop and usually it shows Ethernet 2 (I'm connecting through a dock though that doesn't seem to be relevant) as the adapter with internet access. Now, when I connect to
the VPN, the Juniper Virtual Adapter appears and it now has internet access. Ethernet 2 loses the privilege.
Now, meanwhile the guy sitting next to me running Windows 7 using the same VPN client and his adapters show the opposite, Ethernet has the internet access while the Juniper Virtual Adapter doesn't.
This is a problem because this setup makes it impossible for me to use some inhouse applications which can only be accessed from the internal network. My hostname shows up as the place where I'm tunneling via VPN to.
I googled around a bit and found some workarounds, but none have worked so far (for example people seem to have the same problem with WiFi networks, but the corresponding hotfix doesn't work for cable).
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

    Hi,
To find where your problem is, you can attempt to compare two route table with each other.
Please open CMD by running as administrator, and type following command:
    route print
If you are not familiar with this, you can upload the screenshot,or copy the content to notepad, then upload to SkyDrive.

  • Problems sharing internet connection - works only one way...

    hey all,
i'm having a problem sharing my internet connection between our "new" iBook G4 and "old" iMac G5. (both machines are running 10.4.10.) i've seen several posts here that seem related, but no answers that have worked in my case.
    here's the gist:
ideally, i'd like share the internet connection from the iMac (from our cable modem) to the iBook over the airport. so, i've set up the iMac to do this under "sharing" in system preferences. i then set up the iBook to connect to this new wireless network. under "network status", it says the iBook is connected to the iMac's network, but that the iBook doesn't have its own IP address, so it can't connect to the internet.
oddly, when i reverse the process - i.e. plug the modem into the iBook and share the connection over the airport to the iMac - it works fine. the iMac gets its own IP address and can see the internet.
a friend suggests that somehow the iBook is set up to distribute IP addresses as a router, but the iMac isn't. fine. but, i don't know how to make changes to that function.
    any thoughts?

well, it's taken all day - many, many attempts. but i've finally found something that worked. the answer was burried in the middle of this guy's blog page:
    http://www.tuaw.com/2007/03/26/how-to-using-your-mac-as-a-nat-router/
    he says:
"I've turned off DHCP and set the address to: 192.168.0.1 and the subnet to 255.255.255.192 In making these choices I was following a hint that appeared at macOSXhints back in 2002. Once this is done I went back to the Internet tab of Sharing Preference Pane, select en4 and start it.
"Now on my other device (in this case a Xbox 360) I set it up as follows:
"IP address: 192.168.0.2 subnet: 255.255.255.192 (this is the same subnet of the en4 USB interface, above) gateway/router: 192.168.0.1 (this is the address of the en4 interface) DNS: 192.168.2.1
"(here's where the voodoo comes in, I have no idea why this DNS setting works. You would think it should be 192.168.0.1, or even the DNS server of my ISP, but those simply do not work. I suspect that it has something to do with sharing over Airport as well).
"I've also found that this will only work properly if Internet Sharing is active for my Airport interface. If I turn off the Airport interface (en1), the wired interface (en4) also dies. With these settings in place, everything seems to work properly. Keep in mind you may also need to enable certain services (which will vary with your application) in the Services tab of the Sharing Pane:"
i wasn't trying to solve quite the same problem he was, but by manually inputting the IP addresses, etc, that he did, as well as randomly enabling other "sharing" options (FTP access, etc) which seemed unrelated to internet sharing, it finally worked.
can anyone explain what this is about? it all seems pretty cryptic to me. i'm not sure what i even did...
no complaints, but it would be interesting to know.
    thanks!

  • Wireless connection working on and off

    Hello all
    in desperate need of help!
using Lenovo 3000 N200, Windows Vista Premium 32 bit.
Wireless router: Edimax, g, WEP Hexadecimal  security.
My wireless can't connect to router, unless it does so after disconnecting from a different network. After windows connection manager failed to work, Lenovo support suggested I use access connection. I have defined my home network, and try to cennect. if I click "Connect", I see the system can't get IP address, suggesting that the password is probably wrong, BUT if I first connect to an open network (no WEP key required) and then disconnect through modem icon on tray, access connections automatically connect to the home router and works perfwctly.
Lenovo Support in Israel has proven completely useless in solving this problem, does anyone have any idea why it's happening and how can I fix it? the coffee shop is closing and soon I will not be able to "connect and disconnect in order to connect" trick, it is getting serious.
    thank you

For my settings it's still have a lot of IP address available it just couldn't connect to the router at all. it's happen to some unknown brand of the router and not problem like the WIFI is not working. I tried to reset the routers and everything but it's still not working

  • "Wireless connectivity is off" U310 - Windows 8.1

So, I've just installed Windows 8.1, and all drivers needed, but I can't see any wireless networks (it says Off under Wi-Fi tab, and there's no way turning it on). Tried enabling/disabling device, reinstalling drivers, and F7 key but it only turns airplane mode on/off.
Out of ideas. Any help will be appreciated.

  • Wireless sync works only partially

I'm running IOS 5 on an iPhone 3GS. I have wireless syncing set up and have followed the instructions carefully, at least I think so. The problem is that I want to sync only one playlist from iTunes onto the iPhone. The name of the playlist does indeed sync, but the playlist is empty on the phone. The computer in the equation is a black MacBook running OS 10.6.8.
By the way, the sync method I am using is to have Sync Music checked on the device's music tab, and I have a check by the playlist I want to sync. Is this not the correct method?
One more piece of information to add. I just noticed that in iTunes, when I click on the device, I do see the playlist listed there, just like it is on the phone, but all the songs on the playlist do show up in the iTunes screen, but they are greyed out. I am totally confused.
Any help would be very appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Ben

    I'm having a similar problem.
Running Snow Leopard on my MacBook Pro, and with a new iphone 4S: I have wifi sync enabled, and it goes through the steps, but after it does a wifi sync the new podcasts that were just transferred to the iphone appear as grayed-out titles only. They don't really transfer over.
Any help on this? I hope I don't have to upgrade to Lion, since my MBP is too old to do that. But this is also supposed to work on Windows machines, right?

  • Ipod to Airport connection works only once

I have some kind of airport card in my mac pro. I think it's airport express. the machine was configured 4/2007. I was thrilled when an apple store employee told me I could communicate with my new ipod touch and the airport on my mac pro. I did system preferences, and checked Internet Sharing and it worked beautifully, my ipod touch got to the internet through airport express. The problem is it only works one time. If I toggle internet sharing off, reboot the machine, and toggle Internet Sharing back on my ipod touch sees the airport network to join. If set Internet Sharing on and just leave it on, the next time I try to connect to airport with my ipod it doesn't work (it can't find the network, if i create a network it says Airport is not connected to the internet). I can replicate what I am describing. Any more permanent way to set up airport? ... Flash

(Tiger and Leopard will probably both work. I'm using Leopard.)
in System Preferences/Sharing, check Airport in "to computers using", and then click Airport Options to configure the airport network.
when you've finished the configuration, turn on Internet Sharing.
that's it. Apple TV should be able to see and join the new Airport network.
