Wireless devices showing up as "LAN"

On a WRT 190AC. **bleep**? And while I have your attention, is it possible to turn off IPv6? I don't see that anywhere.

Thank you. Nothing is plugged into this router other than the cable modem.
I had noticed the Connectivity-IPv6 page, but the checkbox is not there. I tried IE11, FF and Chrome. My firmware version is 1.17.160582

  • WRT1900AC - wireless device shows as wired connection in device map

Just purchased the WRT1900AC and going through the process of setting up my devices.
I have a fitbit aria wireless scale and after connecting it to the router it appears as a LAN device instead of a wireless device in the device map. It appears to work, so it's not a functional problem but rather a cosmetic one.
The device has firmware 1.1.8.164461 (updated today).

Yes there is a known bug regarding this.

  • Can't connect wireless device to airport extreme

I bought airport extreme router second hand and am connecting it to HP desktop windows 8.  All software is installed properly and router is connected.  I have a solid green light, and internet access on desktop, but cannot connect wireless devices to network (kindle, cell phone, etc.)  All wireless devices show excellent network signal strength, allow me to put the password in, but all show connected and have not internet access.

This appears to be a simple modem, so assuming that you reset the modem completely before you connected it to the AirPort Extreme, the next step would be to check to insure that the AirPort is in router mode and not bridge mode.
Open up AirPort Utility, click on the AirPort Extreme, and then click Manual Setup
Click the Internet icon at the top of the window
Click the Internet Connection tab just below that
Make sure that the setting for Connection Sharing is set to Share a public IP address
Click Update to save any changes, and give the AirPort a full minute to restart
Check the network again to see if devices can connect now.

  • TC Looses connection to the Internet for wireless device & new Apple TV

I have a new TC (1 TB) that I got within the last month or two, I use it as my Internet router behind my DSL modem. TC gets a DHCP address from my DSL modem then does NAT to both Ethernet and Wifi devices behind it. After a short period of time I have noticed that my Wifi devices (New Apple TV, Macbook Pro, & 2 Iphones) will loose connectivity to the Internet, although they never loose their Wifi connection. What is strange is that I have several hard wired Ethernet devices that can still access the Internet going through the TC at the same time the wireless devices can not.
In order to get the wifi devices back working I have done a few things, disconnected and reconnected the Ethernet cable between the TC and my DSL modem, power cycled the TC, power cycled my DSL modem. It seems like the most reliable method is power cycling the TC.
This seems to happen pretty frequently however with no pattern or cause I can detect. The only interesting thing is that I just installed my New Apple TV and prior to that I do not recall having to recycle the TC. I am inclined to think the TCP video streaming might be overloading the TC and causing the wireless process to crap out while the ethernet ports are fine.
Any thoughts or comments would be appreciated. Will do some more troubleshooting and will contact Apple support at some point. I will also update this thread when I find out more.

I have a similiar problem - but I don't have Apple TV - and when the TC looses internet connection it is for wired and wireless devices. WLAN and LAN still working.
At the same time i cannot access the configuration of the TC thru Airport - are you able to do this?
I also have the feeling that high data loads provokes the error more often.

  • Why do some devices show up as wireless clients and not DHCP clients

When looking at the 'Logs and Statistics' section it shows me the MAC addresses of 3 wireless devices I have on my W/LAN (Macbook and 2 wireless PVR's) in the 'wireless clients' section but no info on the 2 wireless PVR's in the DHCP clients section. Only the Macbook appears there with its ip address shown. Can anyone tell me how to find out the ip addresses of these 2 other devices. I tried connecting one of the PVR's via a cat 5 but that one still doesn't show up in the DHCP clients section.

Try scanning with WakeOnLan to get a list of all devices and their IP addresses. If the devices got fixed IP addresses at the factory, they won't show up under DHCP.

  • Itunes and wireless devices no longer show up in upper right corner of itunes window

Help! My Internet service was interupted last week and when it returned my iTunes and wireless devices no longer show up in upper right corner of the iTunes window.  I finally figured out how to get both of my wireless devices to show up on the left hand column under devices, but nothing else shows up now in the upper right corner!  I cannot for the life of me figure this one out and the tech manual is not helping at all.  Help!

If you have the left-hand sidebar showing then that is where the store and your devices will show can be selected - if you press option-command-S if you are using a Mac, control-S on a PC, then the sidebar should be hidden and the store and device should go back to the top right. Is that what you mean ?

  • HT3624 additional airport express not showing in wireless device list

I have an additional AX to extend my WiFi but it's not showing in wireless device list; it is plugged in, next to base AX, did a hard-reset, amber light is blinking. Everything was working fine for a more than a year. Thank you for your help.

I don't use Xserve but when this happens to me:
I reset the express. I use a wireless Mac to "find" the Express. Need to select the network under the Airport icon. If not there then System prefs/netwrok/status/airport then drop down menu to preferred. If there select it and then select apply then back to that airport icon and finish by using the Airport Utility or in your case Admin utility. If not found in preferred then use the + button. I have never failed to "find" my "lost" network using this counter measure.
If you don't have a wireless Mac then do it with an ethernet connection.

  • Setup Time Capsule as wireless device and Time Machine with Ethernet?

I'm running the latest version of Airport Utility (6.3.4) with a TC a1254 and Macbook Pro platinum late 2007.
      I have a modem/router Ryge model Wa41r.
Ive tried everything I could find in the forums and in expert pages and can't configure my Time Capsule as a Wireless Device connected to the modem/router and Time Machine with Ethernet Cable.
I tried letting it configure itself, it held the wifi signal for over 5 min then turned off. Never that way worked again.
Then I configured with other examples seen in Apple communities and expert Apple pages, but it conflicted with my routers signal. I turned off the Wireless Lan Interface and it turned off the Ethernet cable with the connection as well. I tried giving my TC different IP address.
So my Time Capsule  gives me this status in flicking amber: Internet connection and Conflicting DCHP Range. (when I connect to my Mac the Internet works)
And strangely the wireless signal appears in my Macbook but not in my Android Phone.
Works fine doing backups when asked via ethernet.
Also when I go to check on it on Airport Utility in other wifi devices it appears but says "Device Not Found - device name- was previously part of your network. Check that is still in range...etc"

I would like to help you but you need to clear up some things..
A Time Capsule is plugged into the network by ethernet.. you back up to it using wireless or ethernet.. it should make no difference which.
    When you say this..
Ive tried everything I could find in the forums and in expert pages and can't configure my Time Capsule as a Wireless Device connected to the modem/router and Time Machine with Ethernet Cable.
I cannot understand.. The Time Capsule plugs into the main modem router.. and should be in bridge mode..
Time Machine is not hardware.. it is  the backup software on the computer.. there is no way you can connect Time Machine with ethernet cable. .you can connect the computer with Ethernet Cable..
But you need to clarify please.
If you wish to connect TC to the Modem router by wireless this is not possible. It must connect by ethernet.
You can connect your computer to it using either wireless or ethernet.
And strangely the wireless signal appears in my Macbook but not in my Android Phone.
It is likely the wireless name is not valid.
Make sure all names are short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. 2-20 characters.. Do not use the Apple recommended names.. they can be totally wrong.
Also the password for wireless should be 8-20 characters but same rules.. pure alphanumeric mixed case and numbers.
    Start again.
    Factory reset the TC.
    Factory reset universal
Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.
N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.
Plug it into the main router by ethernet.
Do the setup via the airport utility in a Mac or iOS device.
    Follow the setup instructions above.
Then you can connect to the TC LAN ports by ethernet or use wireless on the computer.
Your modem WA41R. I cannot find details in English . .they are all Spanish so we may be having difficulty of language here.
But if the modem is working as router the TC has to be in bridge mode.. it will not work properly in router mode.
So you should see it set as bridge here.

  • Question re: multiple wireless devices and the Duel Band Airport Extreme

I recently purchased the new duel-band Airport Extreme. Prior to that I had the single band Airport Extreme. I’m a bit confused about how it works and have spent a good bit of time trying to find the answers on the web, but nothing really addresses my specific question so I’m coming to the experts.
I have a number of wireless devices throughout my house… a couple of Roku boxes, two iPads, two iPods running Pandora, a MacBook and an older model Apple TV etc.
Both of the iPods are 802.11 G. The iPads can handle N.
One Roku is 802.11 G and the other can handle N.
I am confused about configuring the Airport Extreme. It’s my understanding that if I just go with the basic setup of creating a network and selecting Automatic for the Radio Mode and Channel that all of my devices will automatically connect to the most appropriate band for the best throughput for that particular device.
I have tried configuring the Airport Extreme as I mentioned above, as well as setting it up with the 5GHz Network Name field selected. I gave this a different name so I would be able to distinguish between the two networks when selecting one on my iPad. I will refer to the fist configuration as Setup A and the second (naming the 5 GHZ Network ) as Setup B.
When I use Setup A all of my devices show one available network to connect to. I select that network and all is well.
When I use Setup B the devices show two available networks, the original and the one I named on the 5GHz Network Name Filed.
My iPod’s ( 802.11 G ) only display the name of the first network, but my iPad’s show both, and I can select either. The signal strength on the 5GHz channel only dislplays two bars on the signal strength indicator icon, but the other network is full bars.
When I use Setup A, is my iPad, Roku and MacBook automatically selecting the 5GHz AND the N connection? How do I know that it’s not using the G band? Is it best to just go with the automatic settings and trust that I’m getting the best connections? How does it know weather to connect to the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz. What determines that ?
Sorry for the rambling questions but the more I think about it the more confused I get about all of the possible combinations of connectivity possibilities.
I appreciate any attempts at making this a “teachable moment” for me :- )
    Thanks !
    Chuck

    Welcome to the discussion area!
The signal strength on the 5GHz channel only dislplays two bars on the signal strength indicator icon, but the other network is full bars.
Not surprising, because the much higher frequency 5 GHz signals are absorbed much more quickly by any obstructions than 2.4 GHz signals. Everything is a trade off. In return for higher speeds, you must give up distance capability and penetration power with 5 GHz. It's not exactly true that you have to have a line-of-sight arrangement between the router and computer with 5 GHz, but many users are finding that to be the case for good, reliable performance.
How does it know weather to connect to the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz. What determines that ?
The signal strength. If your computer is capable of connecting at both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, it will choose the band with the higher signal strength...assuming that both bands have the same network name. The only way you can "force" a device to connect to the 5 GHz band is set it up with a different name and point your computer to that specific network.
For most users, the way to go is setup both bands with the same wireless network name and let devices connect to the strongest signal automatically.

  • WRT54GS-Wireless devices either won't connect or disconnect when a game is launched

My old router went out last night, and I had a wrt54gs that was given to me a while back, so I hooked it up, but I am having some issues with it.
For a while it would say that it had no internet access, when it was connected. Then I couldn't get my wireless devices to connect (xbox, and cell phone) All I had done was change the name and the encryption to WEP.
I was able to get them online when I switched to WPA2 for a while. Then I decided to play a game (Tried Diablo 3 and Path of Exile)  Every time I loaded up the game, the devices would get kicked off. WHen I disconnected from the game, they would reconnect to the network. Until 1 time they didn't. Now my Xbox wont connect at all, and my phone keeps saying the network is not in range, when placed a foot from the router. I've tried disabling UPnP, but that doesn't do anything. I've turned MAC filtering, on and off. I've powercycled, and just get no good results.
I'm not sure if this is just a bad router, or whats, going on. (FYI my old router was a 10 yr old D-link that I never had problems with)

  • Making a vlan for all wireless devices on network

    Hello,
We connected 4 wireless access points (AP541N-E-K9) to an SG300-10P switch.
We want to be sure that no wireless clients can alter settings to the network by connecting to any of the networking devices. We also want that no wireless devices (except a few) can connect to computers that are on the wired network.
I'm new to configuring networking devices so I would appreciate a step by step guidance to set up the switch for this.
We already added all the MAC-adresses of all the wireless devices (that are allowed to use the wireless network) to the access points.
    Thanks already for your reply.

  • Help! Is there a limit to number of wireless devices defined in the FIOS router?

    My current settings:
I have an Actiontec MI242WR router at home for my FIOS Internet/TV connections.  Security setting in the router is set to WPA2 and SSID broadcast is set to 'Disabled'. We've had this router for a number of years and everything seems to work fine.
    My issue:
Currently, I have 10 wireless devices defined in the router, set to be the only devices accepted by the router. they are all normal devices such as laptops, printers, smartphones, etc, defined through menus (Wireless settings/Advanced security settings/wireless MAC authentication).
They all work fine but it seems when I add a new wireless device, it drops one of the previously defined devices from the list. Can't remember if drops the last or the first one previously defined. I'm trying to add about three or four more wireless devices to the list but can't afford to drop any of the other ones. Is this a limitation of this router? Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to buy my own router to replace it with? Thanks for your help in advance
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

#1 With MAC Address filtering there are the following problems/issues:
    a) Regardless of the type of encryption (Wireless encryption types include WEP, WPA, WPA2) MAC Address(es) are always sent in the clear!
    b) Not only it is possible to spoof/clone a MAC address in a NAT router..
For example as noted as shown at http://ui.linksys.com/files/WRT54G/v8/8.00.0/WanMAC.htm
..it is also possible to spoof/clone the MAC Address on a computer!
    c) If an attacker user does not know how to spoof/clone a MAC address without encryption: While they can not use your network, they can see what you are doing!
#2 So just use the highest level of wireless encryption that all of your gear supports.

  • Wifi devices showing my SSID 3 times.

Hello.  First off, let me say I am new here and have only some experience setting up wifi, etc.  I apologize in advance if this question has been asked before or is something simple I've overlooked.  Wireless devices are showing 3 SSIDs.  I am using 2 airport extremes.  I purchased this newer model in March or so (MD031LL/A 802.11 A/B/G/N Model No. A1408 with simultaneous dual band 802.11n "and twice the range of 802.11g."  I previously had the MB053LL/A (Model NO. A1143) 802.11n also.
I had been running the new model fine, not completely certain all of my settings were optimal, but no major issues, except the 2nd floor of my house had problems dropping out at times, and I have, like many people now, a wireless printer, ipad, iphone, appleTV, wifi bluray, TV, and one MacBook Air  (1.7 ghz mid 2011) and a Macbook Pro.  After some slowing which may or may not have been related to upgrading to Lion, I bought the new AE and things seemed to improve, or maybe the settings were just new, I don't know.  Lion also had several updates.  I ramble, I apologize.
So I decided rather than selling the old airport extreme, I was told I could use it to extend my network.  So I placed it on the 2nd floor and set it up to extend my network.  Things seemed okay, and the new AE had 2 SSIDs, 'orange 02 and orange 02 5ghz'.  I don't understand how this works, or which I should be connecting to, but again I digress.  I need to read up on this.  So I had to setup my bluray for wifi and it listed 3 networks (2 'orange 02' and 1 'orange 02 5ghz)
If I go to the 2nd floor there is still a corner that is a dead spot where nobody can get wifi, but luckily we don't go in that area often.  But computers on the 2nd floor seem to lose the internet connection randomly (wifi bar shows it is connected) and so I reconnect to a different SSID, 5ghz usually.  Or sometimes it's the otherway around.  Right now, since our central air decided to stop working in 95F heat, we are downstairs, closest to the new AE and all using the orange o2 5ghz. (see screenshots below)
What am I doing wrong?  Why is it showing this extra SSID, how do I know what to connect to and is it possible my settings are not right?  My apologies for rambling and perhaps not using the right questions or researching this more on my own, but I did google this and it linked me to a question (unrelated) on apple support dicussions.  If anyone has any answers or insight, please reply.  I want to learn.  I can provide screen shots or whatever info you need.  Or perhaps I'm not able to use the older Airport Extreme as a way to extend the network.  I also am very confused about the whole 5ghz, etc.  When looking at other wifi networks around me, I do not see any others listing as duplicates.
    Thank you,
Izaq (Davin)  (please be kind, this is my first post)
    p.s. screen shots below
also, current speedtest.net (connecting at a nearby server) showed 11ms ping, 35.97 Mbps download and 6.48 Mbps upload. (not sure how that ranks for the amount of devices I have)
and this screen shot from Wifi Explorer:

Wireless devices are showing 3 SSIDs
The new AirPort Extreme is broadcasting two bands... one 2.4 GHz and the other at 5 GHz using the same wireless network name, or SSID, so that is where 2 SSIDs are visible.
Wireless devices will automatically connect to the best signal quality from either band depending on their capabilties.  An iPhone, for example can only connect at 2.4 GHz. A newer laptop can connect at either 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz, so it will pick the best signal...automatically.
The third SSID is from the other AirPort Extreme that is extending the signal from the first. This is an older single band device, so it can only extend one band. If this device were dual band, you would see 4 SSIDs.
The AirPort Extreme upstairs is automatically extending the strongest signal that it receives, which is likely the 2.4 GHz band since these lower frequencies are stronger than the higher frequency 5 GHz signals.
Everything appears to be normal according to the information in your post.

  • Unable to connect to other computers (or devices attached) on my LAN

I have recently installed Aireport Extreme as a wireless device connected to Verizon Internet gateway. I have two computers (one window and other vista) and i can connect to internet from each computer. But i am unable to share files or printers as i can't see the other computer when i enter the IP address - windows comes back with unable to find message. I had no problem sharing files or printers on other computers on the LAN with Linksys router. is there a setting in the config that is incorrect. Appreciate response!!

Check that the computers are part of the same network. I am not familar with the AE Extreme so I am assuming that it is discoverable. I would also check that the properties for your Desktop WiFi Adapters have both Discovery Driver, Discovery Mapper, and Discovery Responder checked. Also a good idea to see if the Router has issued a IP licence to these computers. Solutions are simply a process of elimination. On the router there may be a setting that switches LAN Ping OFF and if that is the case computers on your network will not respond to a Ping.
