Wireless dhcp problem [fixed]

ok, go easy with me... im a complete n00b when it comes to wireless stuff...
I found my matching wireless module (zd1211), compiled and installed. loading it show it loads fine but nothing in the "used by" column (is that normal?). then i was trying the followings (i want to make it work 1st using manual commands before trying to use the Arch way):
modprobe zd1211
ifconfig wlan0 up
iwconfig wlan0 essid <myessid>
dhcpcd wlan0
after a few seconds, dhcpcd simply exists. in all the time it is running (a minute or so) no ip is shown for the wireless card in neither ifconfig or iwconfig.
what am i missing???
Thanks in advance people.

After the iwconfig command above, what does iwconfig show you? For comparison, here's mine:
$ iwconfig wlan0

What you're looking for is the Access Point's MAC address - if that's not there, you're not connected, and you need to make sure you're passing the right information. Does your access point have any logs? They might help you work out what's missing, if anything.

Fix for Airport Wireless Connection Problem stating Self-Assigned IP and not wanting to connect in Lion OSX.
Bought my girlfriend the newest Macbook Pro 13" and began experiencing problems with my wifi the moment we got home. Her Macbook would not connect to our home Wi-Fi while my old Macbook Late 2008 running Snow Leopard connected without a problem. Airport would say that it had a Self-Assigned IP address (168.x.x.x). Did not realize it was a Lion problem until after using her Macbook Pro and becoming jealous of the new OSX, I upgraded. Soon after I was unable to go online. Luckily I had my iPad 2 and I began to scoure the net for help. Ran into allot of suggestions but it was not until I tried the following all together was I able to share the good new, from my Macbook. Hope this works:
First go to Preferences > Network and click on the cog next to the + and - on the sidebar and click Set Service Order
         - Move Wi-Fi to the top and click ok.
         - Set location to Automatic
         - Click Apply
         - Click Advanced
         - Click the "-" on the selected Wi-Fi router you wish to connect to
         - Click Apply
         - Click Lock to Prevent Further Changes
Go to your Mac's harddrive, (Macintosh)
         - Go to Library > Preferences > SystemConfiguration >
         - Delete "com.apple.airport.preferences.plist" file
    Turn off your computer
         - push and hold Option+Command+R+P
         - turn on computer
         - when the grey screen turns on you will hear the OS X "ON" sound (for lack of a proper term) and it will momentarily restart.
         - you will once again hear the "ON" sound, let go of all keys.
         - this resets your PRAM
Go to Preferences > Network > Advanced > + sign
         - click Choose a Network
         - Select your network and enter password
Viola!!! I tried this on my Macbook Late 2008 and my girlfriends new Macbook Pro 2010

No you are clearly mistaken. The Self-Assigned IP address problem exists on many Macbook Pro models, including the current model, which I mentioned as being the original computer with the problem. While my 2008 Macbook is older it was working perfectly on Snow Leopard and didn't suffer issues until switching to Lion. So clearly the problem exists on the operating system and not so much the hardware.
I called Apple Support  and they had no fix for the problem and told me that this would hopefully be addressed in a subsequent update. It wasn't until I came accross the answer after trying many different methods that I got both of the Macbooks to connect to my router. Otherwise I wouldn't or could not have been surfing the internet for the last 4 months.
    Cheers.

  • A Fix for Wireless Connection Problems

I’ve been struggling with connection problems for a week. Thankfully, I found a fix. Your mileage may vary, but this may be your answer:
Fix for Wireless Connection Problems on MacBook Pro

Yeah BR, please tell me what your cure is. I have the same setup as you, Vista with the same wireless card you have. Cannot stay connected to the internet. Have spent hours on the phone with tech support and they can't fix it. I hate this f....ing computer, will never buy another one. Please let me know what you did. Once I get it running right I'm selling it and will buy a cheap Dell, never have any problems with them. I have keyboard problems, capital letter problems, connection problems, and download can take 1 to 2 days. Pure BS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • WRT54G (v5) DHCP problem (MAC, APPLE, MAC OS) -- How to fix it

Ok, so I just got some instructions from Linksys support and apparently definitely got rid of the DHCP problem. Here they are:
Please reset the router before and after the upgrade.
To reset the router (make sure that the modem is disconnected when doing a reset):
    1. Locate the reset button of the router at the back panel.
    2. Hold the reset button for 30 seconds using a pen or a paper clip.
    3. Release the reset button and unplug the power adapter of the router.
    4. Leave the router off for 30 seconds then plug it back in.
Click the link below to download and save the firmware:
    http://www.linksys.com/servlet/Satellite?c=LDownloadC2&childpagename=US%2FLayout&cid=1115417109974&packedargs=sku%3D1127782957298&pa gename=Linksys%2FCommon%2FVisitorWrapper
To do a firmware upgrade, you can follow the steps listed on this link:
    http://linksys.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/linksys.cfg/php/enduser/stdadp.php?pfaqid=557
Reset the router again after the firmware upgrade. You can then reconfigure it for Internet and wireless connection.

    Hi, Malcolm:
    Thanks for the post.
No, my new Mac Pro system does not have USB port on the Keyboard, cause I've opted for Apple's wireless blue tooth mouse and keyboard.
I do have 2 USB ports on the Apple's 23" LCD display, and Two USB ports on front side and two available USB ports on the back of the Mac itself.
During the Thanksgiving long weekend, I think I might accidentally singled out the cause of my problem.
I have my HP printer and one multi-card reader constantly pluged into the two USB ports at the back of my Mac, and always tried to use the front side USB ports for the 1GB USB Pen Drives, and that's where the problem lays!
When I unplug the Multi Card Reader from the back USB port, and suddenly all USB ports on my Mac works just fine with the Pen Drives!!!
So, for now, I plug the Multi Card Reader in one the the front USB port, and the rest of the USB ports on the Mac work with Pen Drives flawlessly, it seems that I sloved my problem for the time being...
As for those two USB ports on the back of my 23" Apple Display, They can not take my USB Pen Drives, as you've mentioned that it does not have enough power for the USB Pen Drives.

  • WRT300N & Wireless G Adapter Problem Fix!!

I'm posting this message again with a better "message subject" because I believe it will help a lot of frustrated purchasers of the WRT300N Router.  Please excuse the double post!!
Unbelievable.  I cannot tell you how long I had to work on getting my wireless G adapter to recognize my new WRT300N router network!!  Very frustrating.  I tried just about every suggestion from all of you wonderful forum participants (just where is linksys tech support in all of this?) and just couldn't get the thing to work until.....I did a combination of things, one suggested here, and another on the Microsoft knowledgebase support site.  Here they are.  First, Microsoft says your wireless G cannot communicate with your WRT300N because the  RTS threshold and Fragmentation threshold settings are not the same.  If you have taken Linksys' suggestion to lower your advance wireless settings so RTS and Fragmentation are "2304", you must also change your wireless G card adapter RTS and Fragmentation settings to "2304", mine were defaulted much higher at 4906.  Then you should take the WONDERFUL advice of "Shoemaker2006" who posted the following back in July of 2006:
"...I figured out that the wide band does not really cover the G range but only the N range sort of like a donut with the hole in the middle. When the settings are in mixed mode and wide band the G range is only covered on the outermost part of the G range next to the N range. When in wide band and only N mode the G range is not even addressed. To get the G strength you jave to have it in G mode only and Short band to address the G range. Also have it on channel 11 if possible to not have wireless phone problems. With these settings my network is rock solid (WRT300N + 3 WUSB54G adapters). As far as the N desktop adapter goes it probally will have issues in mixed mode since this is a Pre-N architecture router and the range is not N only. I would not suggest the router to anybody looking for N only speeds until the next firmware update which is specific to the N range problems.
Thank you Shoemaker2006!  Changing my channel to 11 and selecting "G mode only" gave me the range I needed to make my wireless G card communicate with my WRT300N router.  Hope this helps some of you.  I won't even bother you with the 25 other things I tried because none of those changes worked.  So, match your card and routers RTS and Fragmentation threshold numbers, change the router to channel 11 and select "G mode only".  It works!!!

set your gateway on the second to be the IP of the 1st router.  that should take care of it.

  • Mac OSX NOT GETTING IP ADDRESS BECAUSE OF THE DHCP(FINAL FIX)

You may get some errors when trying to connect to the wireless connection.
    LIST OF PROBLEMS:
    -Auto-Assigned IP with 255.255.0.0 Subnet Mask and a 169.x.x.x IPV4 Address
-Unable to renew the DHCP beacuse the DHCP doesn't send the IPV4 address to your iMac/MacBook
    -No IP
    FINAL FIX:
-Log to the Router Configuration page inserting the default gateway address in your browser bar(It should be 192.168.1.1 though my default gateway is 192.168.0.1.....nevermind).
-Go to DHCP tab and make sure that DHCP is ENABLED
-Go to Wireless Settings and set Channel to "1" and the Wireless mode to 802.11 bg(In some routers it's 802.11 bg mixed)instead of 802.11 bgn or 802.11 n.(IN SOME ROUTERS THERE'S ONLY .11 and not 802.11....that's the same s**t though!)
    -Reboot your router
-Shut down your machine and unplug the power cables
-When done press once the power button
-Re-Plug the power cables and turn on your MacBook/iMac
-Go to Network Settings,Advanced settings,TCP/IP and set IPV4 address to DHCP
    SOFTWARE FIX(FIREWALL CONFLICT):
-Disable ANY non-Apple firewall or network management application such as mDNS responder,etc..

    Great work, nice info, thanks!

  • Wireless connectivity problems using IOS 6.0.2?

After installing IOS 6.0.2 on my iPhone 5 I can no longer connect to known wireless sites.  I've been through troubleshooting with both Apple and my ISP and no luck.  I'm thinking there's wireless connectivity problems with this latest update (my iPad 3 is still running 6.0.1 and is fine on my wireless network). Are others having this issue as well?

I am not guaranteeing this fix , but it worked for me , so far. I have an iphone 5 and it had ios 6.0.1 . Worked fine. Upgraded to 6.0.2 and it wouldn't connect with home router most of the time. My son in law an IT guy for the Government came up with a solution. The problem seemed most likely with routers that are bought and not configured and retain the original factory settings. Therefore my phone considers my home network a generic one and I have to manually connect to it. To distinguish the network we did the following.
    1) went to settings on my iphone
    2) choose "my home network" by pushing the arrow on the right
    3) This brought up the network info page. (it says "forget this network " at the top)
    4)DHCP will probably be highlighted.
    5) touch "static"
    6) This will bring up the manual settings
    7) We entered the following.
    For Ip Address 192.168.1.15
    Subnet Mask  255.255.255.0
    Router 192.168.1.1
    DNS 4.2.2.1,4.2.2.2,8.8.8.8
Leave the HTTP Proxy to off
This will assign a static Ip address not a dynamic one and should work.
If it doesn't , go back to step 3 and select DHCP and return to the dynamic state .

  • Macbook Pro Wireless Connection Problems

I bought my 13 inch macbook pro 1 week ago and I've had wireless connection problems from day 2 (I think after the updates).
    Problems include:
    - Safari cannot connect to the internet for 5~10 minutes after I turn it on, whether it be from sleep mode or completely off or restart (the fastest connection I got after turning it on was about 40 seconds)
    - Loading takes ridiculously long and eventually Safari cannot find the server
    - Airport signal (on the top right hand corner) is always full when it is not working
    - Sometimes internet works but it is ridiculously slow
However, when the wireless connection stabilizes, Airport Signal is 2~3 bars full and internet works SOOO well and I love it so much when it does. But the problem is that it stabilizes like 30 minutes to never after I turn it on and it makes me so mad I want to explode this piece of crap in the microwave.
So I've called apple support, and they made me try four things:
    1. Reset modem, router, and computer
    2. Delete caches, reset Safari
    3. Putting Airport first on the Service Order and resetting DHCP Lease
    4. Connecting with Ethernet Cable then resetting the computer
None of these worked, and I'm suspecting that the cause of the problem is the hardware (not the aluminum body that's just bs) because my router and modem are working fine (my other samsung laptop is working perfectly). I don't think the problem lies in my network settings either because I did exactly what the Apple technicians told me to do. So after Appleguy made me try all 4 of those diagnostics, he told me to contact my router company NETGEAR because he thinks nothing is wrong with the mac hardware, so I did. The NETGEAR lady told me if one laptop is working and another isn't, there is nothing wrong with the router. So if nothing is wrong with my hardware, software, router, modem, ISP... Why do I have wireless issues????!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
I'm going to return this <edited by host> or get another one with my warranty

    Same thing here.
I've got a Macbook Pro 15" bought 6 weeks ago, airport express bought about a year ago. All updated with latest software/firmware, etc. Problems include:
-Sometimes when i pull down the network list, my network isn't even there, yet i'm still connected to it. My airport is appx 10 feet away in an open area.
-usually after opening safari or firefox for the first time upon sleep, restart, or just opening the program after i had quit it, it is miserably slow. it takes about 2 minutes for pages like msn.com to load. finally when they do, its faster than you can imagine. that lasts for about a minute. then its slow again.
-when logged into ichat and i send messages, i would sometimes get a "connection timeout" message. my buddy would end up getting the message about 5 minutes later.
My iphone and dell laptop work fine. i haven't tried running parallels, but if bootcamp works, so should prlls.
I've reset the modem about 20 times. i've reset the airport about 20 times. i even re-installed my OS on the mac and nothing has done it.
Weird thing is that i've had my mac for 6 weeks, and this problem surfaced only 3 days ago.
Clearly its not an issue of any of our ISP's. Due to the fact that this only started for me 3 dyas ago, i'm hopeful that its only a software problem and not something else. Hopefully apple will a) ADMIT THEY HAVE A PROBLEM HERE and b) FIX IT.

  • WRVS4400N DHCP problems

    Hello,
I have a new router (obvious) but it seems to have problems with DHCP and also problems when using N function, especially on the 40 MHz band.
First I thought the wireless NIC would be the problem but when I used another wireless NIC from a third party the same problems exists.
The only stable connection I get is if I give the wireless NIC a fixed ip address.
Router is an WRVS4400N version 1.1. The firmware has his newest version that I could find in the download section. Router has been reset to factory settings a few times.
The documentation is not very clear because it differs with the router functionality.
Router is configured to be used in Europe.
I hope someone can help me out or even point me to a newer version of this device.
Message Edited by NoobUser on 10-19-2008 01:53 PM

I had the same issue that with the WRVS4400N 1.1.03.
After I reviewed these email threads and upload the 1.1.08 version, it is still the same, the problem cannot be resolved.
    My scenario is:
    1. DHCP does not assign any IP address to the wireless devices if there is no wired-LAN device connected to one of the LAN ports.
    2. Once this wired-LAN device is connected to the router and got an IP address, the rest of the wireless devices got that too.
i.e. DHCP is not functioned properly. Can anyone advise how to resolve this problem? There is no new firmware update other than the 1.1.03 and 1.1.08(this is a special one and is not available on the web)

  • How to resolve DHCP problem in Oracle for Cent OS

    Hi everyone,
I want to install Oracle 10g on my new linux os CentOS. At very first step of system check, it warns me about having DHCP enabled and to use some static IP insted.
I have already done loads of installation on my windows box so I know how to deal with DHCP by using Microsoft Loopback Adapter.
But I dont know if there is any Loopback adapter available for Linux ? I have tried already to google but it seems that its really difficult to find the correct installation methods because most of "How tos" just ignore the fact that , web interface of EM won't work well with DHCP ( as far as i know :D ).
So, is there any work around for this DHCP problem ? I mean linux version of microsoft loopback adapter !!! ... Also do I need to say that , its my laptop and I use it on various networks including starbucks and DD ;) ... so I guess , I can't go for configuring static ip for my physical card. my knowledge for linux is a bit primitive so it will be really appreciated if you can provide me step by step instructions.
BTW, regardless of warning i have installed Oracle 10g, and as i had expected .... Web Interface of EM gave me an age old error ( web page not found ) when I restarted my laptop... which is because of DHCP.
Thanks in advance for any help
    Peace,
    Jack

Thank you guys for your advice. I really appreciate it.
But this does not solve my problem. I dont know weather you guys know or not , CentOS is EXACTLY same as RHEL other then "support" thing. So I dont see any reason to switch from CentOS to RHEL. Another reason is , I have already installed CentOS on my separate partition , so I dont want to go to through all of that again :D .
And even if i think to change to OEL( i have downloaded it already ) or RHEL , problem still exists ... " DHCP " ... how do i deal with it ??
    for my friend damorgan,
a fixed IP address is preferable but if you need DHCP for some reason just do the install, build your database, and then modify the listener.ora and tnsnames.ora to point to 127.0.0.1 for the host. , I know I need fixed IP, but if I am installing it on my laptop and just for study purpose, Its really not useful to setup static IP and as i wrote in OP, life of student is very adventurous and we never stay at one place right ? so, its not possible to have static IP for me ( unless i use it with VMWare or something like that ) .... now question is, what is this 127.0.0.1 ip you are talking about ? Do i need to add it into HOST file ? A little brief explanation will be helpful here :) ... this stuff is damn easy with windows and i am sure that linux should have have work around of DHCP. I am writing LINUX , instead of going in to specific flavor because i think the solution will be same only the method will change, right ? .
I also looked at the link David posted here , (to be honest , I have not gone through all OSes setup help ) , I can not find even a line mentioning about DHCP Problem. May be I am missing something , David can you point me exact link (if there is any) ?
    Any more suggestions guys ?
    Peace
    Jack

    Hi Charith,
It's looks like AP goes into Standalone mode due to it cannot reach your WLC. In flexconnect when it cannot reach WLC, it will go into standalone mode without rebooting AP. (in local mode AP will reboot unless it can find a WLC)
Can you check your AP has reahability to your WLC all the time ? Where the DHCP configured for users ?

  • Broadband/internet and wireless connection problem...

Towards the end of 2101 I received an email informing me that BT would be upgrading my local line and I could expect a much improved service. Whether this 'upgrade' has been the cause of my problems or is merely coincidental I cannot say. Prior to my experience since this time I could count lost broadband in hours per year (I never had internet or wireless connection problems).
Since the end of 2010 I now regularly lose my broadband completely every six to eight weeks. 'Home Hub cannot connect to broadband.' There is a worsening loss of speed? over a period of two to four days at the end of which I need to phone BT three/four/five, etc. times until they manage to locate the problem and fix it. It is always some problem they find on the line or with their equipment.
I always mention that this is an ongoing problem. Never do they take any action to escalate the issue.
This week things have become considerably worse.
I have started to lose my internet connection now. 'Safari cannot connect to the internet'.
There are now two issues which arise concurrently.
I phoned BT, finally the operative in India (through a very poor BT wireless phone connection) changed the channel of my router for me. He mentioned something about changing the address and password. This seriously exacerbated the situation. My password is not recognised now when I am asked to reconnect by selecting a network.
The next occasion on which I lost my INTERNET connection and tried to reconnect I got the message 'Airport has the self-assigned IP address (...........) and is unable to connect to the internet.
I phoned BT to report this and was told that this indicated an adapter problem and the problem was now out of BT's hands. I Should contact Apple.
I did so. Apple said I should contact BT to change channels. I explained this had caused the problem and they were now refusing to assist me. Apple tried everything that they could think of to resolve the issue (despite not being required to do so). Eventually the only suggestion they could make as BT had refused to help was to reinstall my operating system. Extremely drastic. But I can now connect wirelessly again.
Service is still intermittent requiring constant restarts to regain connections.
BT's response to a formal complaint was more of the usual banal questions, the usual tests, the usual promises of 'something would be done'.
Their systems are not set up to make any sort of accurate diagnosis of customers' issues. They seem to have a set number of 'fixes' into which they try to fit all problems - one would assume simply to save costs - their cost saving exercises are now costing me money.
    That's all for starters.
    Any suggestions?

I have a similar problem, since BT "upgraded my broardband" my home hub looses internet connection at least twice a day and I have to power reset it. the broadband shows as connected but the internet connection is lost, if I try reconnecting it fails and only a power resetr will work. I have a temp solution by fitting a time switch to the mains adaptor and reseting it at 0200 each day. but before the upgrade the home hub had worked for years and no problems. i have also replaced the origonal home hub 1 with a home hub 2 to see if that improves the situation.
    welcome to the forum
This subject has been marked as solved by the originator and you will get more response if you start your own subject rather than continue here.
if you start your own subject just cut and paste your post and then in order to help please can you post the adsl stats from your router may need to 'show detail' to get all stats (if hub enter 192.168.1.254 in your browser and navigate to adsl or use a-z, if netgear enter 192.168.0.1) and run btspeedtester (MAC users may have problems) http://speedtester.bt.com and post the results .
are you connected directly to the NTE5 master or test socket or to somewhere else? Do you have any phone extension sockets in your home?
Have you tried the quiet line test? - dial 17070 option 2 - should hear nothing - best done with a corded phone. if cordless phone you may hear a 'dull hum' which is normal
Someone may then be able to offer help/assistance/suggestions to your problem

The firmware is the most current one on the site. There are no other options than that. Anyway what kind of DHCP problem are you having? Is your laptop getting "limited or no connectivity" when you try to connect wirelessly to the network?
Don't use AES. Most cards are only compatible with TKIP.
What kind of Wireless MAC Filter are you using "Prevent" or "Permit Only"

    Hi
I am experiencing wireless connection problem on 4s after ios 8.1 upgrade. The wireless icon appears showing that it's connected but webpages do not load. I have checked my internet connection with other devices and seems to be alright. what to do?
I have tried reseting the network settings and forgetting my wireless connection and re-connecting to it. I even backed up my phone on itunes and restored it, factory reseted it. Nothing seems to work.
Also after my upgrade to ios 8.1 my personal hotspot option under cellular data has disappeared.
Would you please help me out? I would really appreciate it.

    Hi..
Restart your router then restart the iPhone to test.

Does  Mavericks have the problem fixed with working with the Dell UltraSharp U3014 30 inch monitor?

I have this (or a similar) issue and I did notice something interesting. After I boot into Windows via Bootcamp (where I have the U3014 specfic driver installed) and then reboot into MacOS X (Mavericks) the monitor works flawlessly.
I would hazard a guess that this means bootcamp is retaining the driver used in Windows. Kind of the reverse of the TB GBE adapter driver issue.
To explain my issue for anyone else: the monitor flicks on and off as if the connection was poor. Connecting via HDMI. Connection is fine and as stated, everything works fine in Bootcamp.
