Wireless Died on WRT54GS

Earlier this morning, all wireless computers on my WRT54GS v1.1 stopped communicating with the router. The SSID was no longer shown in the list of available networks. After disabling wireless on the router for a few minutes, and re-enabling it, the SSID now appears in the available network list with a strong signal. Some computers will connect, while others won't. Those that will connect will see the router, but can't access Internet, router configuration page, or other computers on the network, and no pings go through. All wired computers still connect just fine and nothing was changed anywhere on the network or in the router configuration prior to this. Any ideas?
Jason

Hi… If you have the wireless SSID on this router set as Linksys which is default, then change it to something else. Also make sure that you have not press that Cisco System SES button on the router. It activates SES and changes the security mode to WPA. So check your security mode and change it if needed. There is also a possibility that electric surge has damaged the firmware on the router, try upgrading the firmware from http://www.linksys.com/download.

  • Wireless-G Model WRT54GS V7 Firmware 7.50.0 - easylink Advisor 1.5.1044

    I have a Wireless-G Model WRT54GS V7.50.0 Firmware for easylink Advisor 1.5.1044
Connected to a highspeed connection, and then connected (Hardwired in port 1 of router) to a Dell system running XP SP3.
I bought a new Laptop that is running Windows 7 and the laptop causes the connections to drop when it is powered on.
Then the laptop is always dropping the connection and re-establishing the connection. Is this problem because of windows 7?
If I do not bring the laptop up, i can run the desktop with no problem. Running WPA security mode.
Thanks in advance for any help you can give me.
    John

Is your Desktop computer is a Wired or Wireless? Are you facing the problem only on your Windows 7 Computer or on all the wireless computers?
You can try to change the Wireless Settings on your Router and check if that makes any difference...
Login to the setup page of your Router and click on the Wireless tab.... and below change the Wireless Channel to 11-2.462GHz and click on Save settings.... Then click on the Sub tab "Advance Wireless Settings" and below Change the Beacon Interval to 50 .....Change the Fragmentation Threshold to 2304 Change the RTS Threshold to 2307 ....Click on "Save Settings"...
Now see if you can locate your Wireless Network and attempt to connect...

  • HELP I have a wireless Linksys router WRT54G connected th...

HELP I have a wireless Linksys router WRT54G connected through my cable company broadband modem on a Mac. I have another computer to which I installed wireless capability because it didn't come with it. This required attching some piece of equipment to the back of the PC which enabled it to get on the internet without another cable modem. My question is this. If I get an iphone or a laptop(with built in wireless ability) will I automatically be able to go on the web because of the router on the Mac.

yes certainly... if you get any wireless device in network that would certainly connects to a wireless n/w of router...

  • Wireless G model WRT54G VERSION 8

I have Wireless G model WRT54G VERSION 8 and I was wondering is there anyway for me to turn off the wireless part cause I have no use for it right now. I just want to use the wired connections ports  to connect my computer and my xbox360.

User's manual, page 9, wireless network mode.

  • No wireless connection on WRT54GS

The wireless connection on my WRT54GS (v6, firmware 1.50.9) seems to have died. The WLAN light still comes on, but neither the downstairs PC nor my PSP can locate the network, even though the router is set to broadcast the SSID. Rebooting makes no difference. Cabled connections (PC and PS3) still work perfectly well. No settings have been changed on any of the equipment, so I suspect that something has gone wrong internally. The router is just about within its warranty period, so is there anything I can try - any diagnostic software, for example - or should I just get it replaced?

You can try to update the firmware of the router, to check if that stops connection dropping. To update the firmware of router try this: 1. Go to www.linksys.com/download and select correct model number and version number. Download the firmware and save it on your computer. 2. Check the file it sould be firmware image file like .bin etc. If it is a compressed zip file extract it to get firmware image file. 3. Open setup page of router by typing http://192.168.1.1 in browser’s address bar, and typing password as "admin" and no user name. 4. Go to administartion tab there 5. Go to fimware update sub-tab there 6. Browse for the firmware image file and click update 7. when update completes turn off modem & router. 8. After 2 minutes turn on modem and after 2 more minutes turn on router. To get network key, connect your computer to one of the four ports on router using ethernet cable. 1. Open setup page of router by typing http://192.168.1.1 in browser’s address bar, and typing password as "admin" and no user name. Use your password if you have changed it earlier 2. Go to wireless tab. 3. Go to wireless security sub-tab 4. If security mode is wpa or wpa2 note down passphrase/shared key, if security mode is WEP note down wep key number 1. This will be your network key Well you need to input all the wireless settings of your wireless network on Wii. To get these settings: 1. Open setup page of router by typing http://192.168.1.1 in browser’s address bar, and typing password as "admin" and no user name. 2. Goto wireless tab. Here you will get the wireless network name/SSID. Here make sure wireless SSID broadcast is enabled. 3. Now goto wireless security sub-tab and here you will get the security mode and the security key. If security type is WPA note passphrase/shared key, and if its WEP note down wep encryption level and key 1 from listed 4 keys....& it will definately work!!!

  • Wireless Issues with WRT54G V8

For about a month now I have been having issues with staying connected wirelessly. I have updated the firmware, changed the wireless channels and such. Im not sure what the problem is. It normaly happends during the evening/night hours, but thats when Im online most of the time. My WRT54G V2.2 didnt have this problem, thats the reason why I bought the same model when the old ones WAN port died. I have my compter set to use Static IP addresses, 128Bit web encription, mac address filtering. If any one has an suggestions I would be happy to hear them. I have even considered building a directional antenna for my wireless adapter, which is a WMP54G v4.

On the web interface of the router change the beacon interval to 50 change Rts to 2304 and fragmentation threshold to 2304.

  • Wireless Link two wrt54g

I have a floorplan that pretty much eliminates my being able to get Ethernet cabling between my Computer area and Home Entertainment center.
When it was just Tivo I linked it to the existing wrt54g - no problem.
Just added XBox 360, upgraded Cable Box(needs Internet also and Would like to add a slingbox.
At the local Fry's I had the option of purchasing 2-3 access points ($75 a pop) but the Tech guy recommended purchasing another wrt54g and bridging the two. It made sense.
    First one is
    192.168.1.254 (since I have a DSL router at 192.168.1.1)
    Operating mode = router
    Using Mac Filter for security
Lan cable in the hub side --
works great for Laptop, tivo, etc
    Second one is
    192.168.1.253
    Operating mode = router
All three macs placed in the MAc Filter List for #1
    Wireless channels are the same.
    Security off.
#1 doesnt see #2 on the wireless network(I check the mac list to see if attached)
This just the wrong idea or plan? IF yes - suggestion on a better one.
Suggestions on what to fix or review

I think what you need is a Wireless Bridge using 2 WRT54G's.  You will have to flash one router with DD-WRT v23 SP2 in order for this to work.  I recommend you use a WRT54GL v1.1 for the secondary router/client bridge.  It has more RAM and Flash Memory.  HERE is a link to a wireless bridge tutorial.
I have this setup in my home and it works great.  No drops, steady connection, real easy setup.

  • Can no longer connect to internet wirelessly with Linksys WRT54G...

    Hi, all...
I'm at my father-in-law's house. His home network setup is as follows:
    * Compaq desktop connected via Ethernet cable to
    * Linksys WRT54G, v3 (IP 192.168.2.1) connected via Ethernet cable to
    * Westell DSL modem provided by SouthEast Telephone (his ISP - IP 192.168.1.1)
I set this equipment up for him about 18 months ago. His Compaq desktop connects perfectly to the internet, using the setup I described above, which I set up for him about 18 months ago. I *used* to be able to connect to the internet wirelessly (with both my IBM ThinkPad and my MacBook; my bro-in-law *used* to be able to connect to the internet wireless (with his Dell laptop).
For reasons we don't yet understand, neither of us can connect wirelessly to the internet any longer. I have called Linksys, posted to their board, and read other threads here, so I am aware that MacBooks have some issues with Linksys routers. I'm getting ready to phone my father-in-law's ISP, to see if they can help.
But... I don't understand why this used to work, but doesn't any longer. I would be very grateful for any help any of you great folks could provide, and I will gladly post here any detailed info on the setup that might be of help!
    Many thanks,
    Bill J.
MacBook 2.0   Mac OS X (10.4.8)   iMac 17in Core 2 Duo 2.0, AirPort Extreme, AirPort Express, IBM NetVista M42

    Thanks for your reply.
Actually the Linksys 2Wire modem works fine in OSX and when connecting via a Compaq PC I also have in the house. It is just on the MacBook running XP that it fails to "connect". XP see's the network but cannot connect.
Also, I downloaded again bootcamp and created a fresh driver CD, reinstalled the driver and received the same error: 1706 No valid source could be found for product Macintoish Drivers foir Windows XP.msi.
I looked at the directory on the CD and it appears that there are no driver files, only documentation.
I called Apple, got no help, called Microsoft, spent 1.5 hours talking to them
    they were no help either.
I sent a messge to the bootcamp beta mail address informing them that it seems the drivers are not being downloaded with bootcamp.
    Thx again.

  • Wireless repeater using wrt54g and wap54g

i am having problems connecting my wrt54g and wap54g as wireless repeater. my setup is as follows: 1. wrt54g (192.168.1.10) is connected to a dsl provider modem/router (192.168.1.1) (dhcp server). With this setup i do not have any problems connecting my wired pc and laptop to the network. 2. on my 2nd floor the signal is faint thus i need to extend the wireless signal. 3. i have a wap54g (192.168.1.12) that i would like to repeat the signal of the wrt54g. 4. i tried the guide from the website but it was general thus there are some settings (recommended) that are missing. questions: 1. does the 2 wireless ap need to have the same SSID, channel and wep settings? 2. what should be the gateway for the wap54g? 192.168.1.1? 3. when using wifi, would i see 2 access point? or a single 1 and whoever is nearer? 4. does the wrt54g need to be a dhcp server? or the 192.168.1.1 can do that. 5. does my ideal setup be 2 AP and not 1 wireless router/ap and 1 ap? 6. can the wrt54g use wireless distribution mesh? 7. i cannot see my wrt54g from the firware downloads, mine is v7 and there are only v6 and v8? am from asia and this might be an asian version? any help would be appreciated.

what i did was the following: 1. enable wap54g as a wireless client to look for the main ssid. 2. copy the mac address to the option for wireless repeater. 3. i can now use the wap54g as a repeater. when i shut down everything and turn it on, i cannot again hook up. again, i have to do the steps above for the wap54g to act as a repeater. any idea on what the problem is? i am sure that what i am putting on the mac address is correct. even when i shut down and turn on all router and accesspoints. the connection seems lost.

  • Wireless Notebook using WRT54G V.6

My question is if I currently have one desktop and a laptop with wireless built in and have been able to access my network through the laptop by going to "View available Networks" and just always connecting to my network when I access the internet; is there anything else I need to do??  should I also run the Linksys setup CD through the laptop or just leave it as it already stands??  Also, it seems that sometimes my router will disconnect on its own and I always have to go back in the setup through explorer and reconnect it.  Is there something to make it so I can just boot up the system and access the internet without having to keep doing this from time to time?   thanks for any help and I have the Wireless WRT54G Version 6 with the update of 1.01.1

hi...as u have the wireless connection working on the laptop , u need not run the set up cd on it...try accessing the router using http://192.168.1.1 and logon by the password "admin"...once on the set up page , go to the "wireless" tab and change the ssid , try out channel - 1 or 11 and under the "advanced wireless settings" , change the beacon interval - 50 , fragmentation threshold and RTS - 2304

  • Wireless Connectivity issue (WRT54G)

Ok.... I'll try and explain the problem as best I can.
My family has been using a WRT54G to network the house computers (1 or 2 desktops running via ethernet and 3 laptops running via wireless) for years, and it's always worked perfectly, up until January... Coincidentally? the inability for some computers to connect via wireless coincided with the installation of Windows 7 Beta on one of the laptops. Since then, We have only very rarely been able to have all three laptops connected to the wireless at the same time (computers connected via ethernet have always worked, and the laptops work fine when connected via ethernet). Usually unplugging and letting the router reset itself works fine to get at least two of the computers running (the other not even being able to see the network).
The router is running these settings (just reply and I can get anything else you need)
     Firmware Version: v1.02.2, Capture(month.num6) Jun. 7, 2007    Wireless Channel- 6- 2.437GHz
    Wireless SSID Broadcast- enable
    Status- SES inactive
    Wireless network mode- Mixed
Also, for some reason, The network no longer has the correct name, and it is unsecured.... any reasons why? this is driving us nuts.
    Thanks,
    Volund

I'm surprised noone has responded yet.  I'm having the same issue and based on searches I've done, this is a frequent problem with this router when a Windows 7 computer connects to it.  In my case I have a notebook that dual boots XP and 7.  XP works fine and has been working for a long time.  As soon as I boot to 7, all connections on the router drop.  Very annoying.  Hopefully someone has the answer.

  • Having trouble with multiple wireless users on WRT54G router

Basically, there are 3 of us wirelessly sharing the internet via a linksys WRT54G router. I have our router password-protected, to avoid randoms stealing out broadband. I am a Mac user (3 year old computer), the other 2 are on PC laptops.
At the moment, I have an excellent internet connection, and it's working just fine. However, if my room mate connects with their laptop (a fairly new model), my internet connection stops working. I still have a signal, but it just really slows down/often stops working entirely. It's  as if their wireless connection takes priority and ignores mine (essentially nullifying the router's purpose).
Has anyone come across a problem like this before? Your assistance would be super helpful and appreciated.

Hi, perhaps you may try the following steps to improve the performance of your router:
    • Upgrade the router’s firmware
    • Reset the router after the firmware upgrade
    • Optimize the router’s wireless settings
    • Use a wifi analyzer like http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/ to set a non overlapping channel to the router
    • Relocate the router on a more central location for better wireless coverage
    • Avoid placing the router on a glass or metallic surface

  • I keep getting kicked when wireless connects to WRT54G

For a long time now I've been having this problem and can never seem to figure out how to solve it, I've tried calling tech support and nothing they do fixes it. I've had this WRT54G wireless router for a year now, I've always kept up with all firmware updates. Simply put when I try to play games online, download or just surf the web my connection is superb, but the moment my fiancee boots up her pc and her wireless card trys to connect to our router the cisco orange light goes off three lights blink and I loose all connection this usually lasts about 3-5 seconds, I'm connected to a DSL modem, I'm not very well knowledged about networking but I was hoping you guys out there could help me out, I get tired of in the middle of playing world of warcraft that i gotta sign off and quit the game just so she can get on the internet. Please help.

As you had already resetted the router .... try this link to configure the router

  • How can I make my PB G4 Titanium connect wirelessly to a WRT54G?

I have searched and googled through forums but I can't seem to make my PowerBook G4 Titanium (10.4.10) connect to my WRT54G at all. It seems the best way is to use WPA-Personal with TKIP and password but all I get is [The wireless network "xyz" does not support the requested encryption method]. I have tried AES and AES+TKIP but same problem. Has anybody got it to work? Any ideas?
    Thanks in advance,
    Adrian Madrid

    Thanks for the information.
The first link did not relate to wireless connections, though. I must say that the router it is running just fine for wired connections for a wired Mini and a wired PC (Windows XP) as well as a wireless PC (Windows XP) laptop. And I can connect just fine these two laptops if I use a wire. But I just can't get the PB to connect wireless.
The second link did mention wireless security and I have tried setting up WPA Pre-Shared key with TKIP and AES but my PB keeps saying that [The wireless network "XYZ" does not support the requested encryption method].
The third and fourth links mention bugs with the firmware and DHCP. I have the latest DD-WRT firmware installed (RC3) and I have tried using DHCP and fixed IP addresses but I believe the problem is actually connecting to the network first.
    Any other ideas?
    Thanks in advance,
    Adrian Madrid

  • Lost wireless capability on WRT54G (wired works fine)

So at some point in the night, I lost all wireless capability on my WRT54G V8. Both my roommates computer and mine can not connect wirelessly, but through a ethernet cable it's fine. My adapter sees the network, but never gets past 'Acquiring network address'.
I searched the forums for similar problems, but all I could find was people with brand new machines, whereas mine was working when I went to sleep, and now not so much. Oh, and I called tech support, and they were nice enough to tell me that my warranty expired two days ago, thus they can't help me for free. Fantastic.

As you have mentioned that it was working previously, then i think you need to do is Click on Start and goto the Control Panel and double click on Network Connections, right click on Wireless Network Connection and click on Properties. Now on this window, click on the second tab Wireless Network and give a check mark on "Use windows to configure my wireless" and then remove all the network names from the Preferred Networks Window. Then click on OK...Right click on Wireless Network Connection again and click on View Available Wireless Networks and try to re-connect to your network...Now it will give you the opportunity to put the network/wep key, make sure you enter the correct network key and confirm it...It will connect... Check if you are able to Browse Internet.
