i have a vendor tiring to install a wireless parking meter on my network, the problem is with his setup. he is using a hardened windows CE device as the CPU, but his wireless connection is being fed through a separate wireless router " this looks like an off the shelf wireless router"
this wireless device can do WPA-PSK but i use WPA v1 enterprise. my question is has anyone used a setup like this with a wireless router that can do WPA Enterprise? or is there a device capable of doing this.

About the only thing I can think to try with this setup is to look into something like dd-wrt or openwrt or hyperwrt. They're opensource alternative OSs that were initially developed for the Linksys WRT54G series wireless router but many have been ported to other manufacturer's devices. They were developed in part due to the lack of more advanced EAP mechanisms found in the stock firmware. The obvious downside to this would be convincing the vendor to use and support the new firmware. But given the ease of use, you might be able to pitch to the vendor that such a design would be a major improvement in terms of feature/functionality for their product. Officejet Pro 8600 Plus wireless printing dilemma

I recently purchased the Officejet Pro 8600 Plus for my dorm room in college. However, the school requires all devices that want to use its wi-fi to register their IP addresses through detection software in addition to the default log-in information just to use the wi-fi. Now, here are the items I currently have:
- the printer itself
- the printer USB cable
- a few ethernet cables
- a personal router
- an ASUS wireless dongle (plugs into PCs via USB, has ethernet port but the device itself can create a hotspot and its own "network")
- one of the built-in school routers (high up on the wall)
The question is, is there a way I can set up any type of wireless printing in my dorm room? Is it possible to buy two wireless USB attachments that hook up wirelessly to my printer and computer, acting like bluetooth? Thank you!

Range extender improves the signal strength and cover a bigger area, but adds an extra layer of communication so will have slower response. It helps connecting devices far apart, but may cause delay and "loss" of communication, especially "two way" communication which is the problem you are experiencing.

Problem consistently printing via new (summer 2011) AIRPORT EXTREME BASE STATION and Brother wireless printer (model HL5370DW). What am I doing wrong?

Scenario: Home network has been recently set up for wireless internet access via NEW Airport Extreme Base Station (purchased September 2011). Units accessing the network include: 2011 Macbook Pro, 2011 Macbook Air, 2007 Macbook, 2009 Macbook Pro, 2 iPhone 3GSs, and a 1st-gen iPad (and a partridge in a pear tree AEBS is configured to run WPA2 encrypted network, as well as a WPA2 guest network. I am attempting to yoke a BROTHER HL5370DW wireless B or G/ ethernet / usb-capable printer to the main network such that any and all units can print wirelessly or its equivalent (i.e., via printer hooked to AEBS through USB hub)
Problem: Despite configuring the Brother printer to recognize the main WPA2 network I created, I am unable to get wireless printing to work. My workaround was to physically connect Brother printer to AEBS via USB, specifically using a Belkin USB hub (after all, I wanted access to usb drives, as well as the printer). This workaround works ONLY SOME OF THE TIME. Generally, after a fresh boot of any computer or after a restart of the AEBS, any given computer will be able to print (i.e., any computer wirelessly connected to the main WPA2 network recognizes the printer). HOWEVER, at random times, printer access is gone (as is access to USB drives connected to AEBS's usb hub). Wireless networks are still up and running when that happens. IS THERE A WAY TO GET THE USB HUB's devices (i.e., printer and usb drives) to ALWAYS REMAIN AVAILABLE AS LONG AS THEY STAY CONNECTED TO THE AEBS? In other words, what accounts for the intermittent loss of the usb peripherals?
Sometimes, I just shut the airport off on whatever computer is having this problem, and the problem goes away. Sometimes, the problem is present across all computers in the house, sometimes only a few are affected. I can ALWAYS see the AEBS in the Airport Utility if the AEBS is connected to the particular computer via ETHERNET CABLE.
My theories:
- true wireless printing (i.e., without usb hub workaround) doesn't work because the N network somehow isn't backwards compatible with the Brother printer, which, i believe, is B/G. Although...isn't Wireless N networking supposed to work with BG devices? I did find a thread (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2570774?start=0&tstart=0 ) that explains some of the particulars of WPA2 encryption and Wireless B/G issues, but it was beyond my level of comprehension (I'm a psychologist, but not an Apple Genius
- The usb workaround is only intermittently viable because of some flaw in the Airport or Airport Utility that causes dropouts to happen when a Macbook Pro or Air's lid gets closed or one gets opened after having been at a different network (e.g., at my office).
QUESTIONS:
- Should I try to use my old router (7 year old Linksys WRT54G) as an access point and connect the Brother printer to that G-router? How do I do that?
- I wouldn't mind just relying on the usb hub method if I could just insure more consistency (i.e., no random dropouts of peripherals). How could I do this?
Rule out:
- wireless printing works on my printer - it was being recognized back before the AEBS. I had the Linksys router running a WEP network and had the wireless printer talking with no cables to the router and the computers. (I just don't want to revert to using WEP encryption given its lack of security and my trying to protect HiPAA related health information on behalf of patients)
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

If turning off WEP works, then you just need to
provide the cameras with the "Equivalent Network Password".
One of the problems with WEP is that the actual
standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit
WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier, vendors use certain
algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords
(or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling the use
of simple easy to remember WEP password rather than
lengthy HEX keys. The problem is that different
vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX
key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be
hashed differently on a non-Apple client and vice
versa.

Brilliant idea about trying the system with No encryption on... that DID solve the problem... almost.. once I turned off the encryption option, and restarted the Airport, I got a dialog box showing that the "Base station needs attention" but it didn't indicate WHAT kind of "assistance" it needed. Nonetheless, I closed out of the Airport program only to find that the indicator light, which had been Green, was now, flashing Yellow and I could not connect anything, including my computer. I opened the Airport program again and found the ONLY way I could get the Green light on was to select some sort of encryption option... then the light would go Green again but my cameras would not hook up again, and when I went back in and ONLY changed the option to NO encryption, I got the yellow flashing light and the "this base unit needs attention" warning...
I think your suggestions are almost on the mark... is there any way of reconciling the WEP coding between the cameras and the Airport??? Or turning off the encryption option and STILL have Airport work?

Issue with HP 3600n, NetGear Wireless Router and SUBNETS!!

I want to say (admit) first off that I am a PC person. The school I work for has recently acquired some new iMacs and I have to say I am very impressed with the design, ease of use and reliability. I can't believe I am saying these things out loud! Here, however, is my dilemma and I am hoping a community with a little more experience than me can help out. I searched through these discussions already and found some useful info, but nothing to really nail it on the head. My situation may be unique, but I am not sure. Here goes:
The school building we occupy is very old. Each classroom has only ONE data drop in it. Each classroom has a few PCs and a few Macs (mostly the newer iMacs). In one classroom in particular, I am unable to print wireless-ly to a networked HP LaserJet 3600n I have setup elsewhere on the network. Here is the network breakdown:
Main network (FIOS modem to SonicPro 2040 Firewall)= 192.168.168.xx. The HP Printer has an IP address on this scope. The classrooms have a NetGear WGR16 setup to act as a switch and wireless access point. The WGR16 also distributes IPs on it's own subnet, 192.168.1.xx. The iMac connects wireless-ly to this NetGear and receives an IP of 192.168.1.xx.
The PCs in the classrooms connect directly to the NetGear Router via an Ethernet cable. The PCs can see the printer, the firewall and get out to the internet with no problems. They can print with no issues. The iMac, however, can get out to the internet but cannot see the HP printer on the other scope. I know how to add a printer in Windows directly via an IP address, but trying that with the Mac doesn't get me anywhere, probably because I am not doing something correctly. I can get the Mac to print to the HP printer's IP directly but it just sends garbled text to the printer and then shoots out 100 blank pages (lol).
The Mac, HOWEVER, can print with no problem wireless-ly to another networked printer I have elsewhere on another scope (it's a Lexmark C532n).
I am thinking the issue has more to do with the HP printer than anything else but my questions are:
1. What is the best way to have Macs recognize printers that are on different subnets if the built in features of Mac OSX aren't "seeing" the printer?
2. Are there any specific issues with the NetGear Router or HP Printer that I should know about and address to solve this issue?
3. We are a school on a limited budget so purchasing any additional hardware is not likely.
I appreciate anyone who has read this entire rambling discussion and certainly appreciate any help in moving things in the right direction. Please let me know if I need to clarify anything I have said here.

I just had the same problem with my MacBook Pro using 10.5.5 After trying a number of things, the following worked. (not sure what specifically ... just did this combination)
1. Had the Apple store Genius Bar folks install the latest HP drivers.
2. Restart computer
3. Restart the HP Color LaserJet 3600
4. Connected the HP printer and MacBook Pro directly into a switch, so the wireless was not an issue (both machines had IP addresses set and computer's was set to DHCP with manual IP).
5. Instead of using the System Preference printing and fax tool, I started Text Edit, typed something and said "print".
Print window came up and said "no printer selected"
6. I clicked on the drop down so it would look for printers.
7. It found the HP Color LaserJet 3600.
8. I clicked on the name of the printer and the computer went out and found the driver
9. I clicked on "Add" and it added the printer.
10. I tried a couple of test prints in different programs.
11. I disconnected the hard wired ethernet cables and set the computer to be on the wireless.
12. I printed a few more test prints in various programs.
I had previously tried selecting the printer and drivers through the System Preferences to no avail, but doing it this way worked.

Non Airport wireless router & shared usb printer w/ AX

I think this is possible, I hope so. This Sunday I hope to set up 3 photo viewing stations at a soccer tournament I will be covering with many other photographers. We upload our images to Exposure Manager nightly. The center has wireless internet we can access to bring up the website on laptops running a kiosk browser. The viewers can order prints online via credit card. I would like the multiple viewing stations to be able to print out receipts to a shared laser printer (Brother 2040). The printer works fine connected to an Airport Extreme or Express. The dilemma is the laptops must be connected to the sport centers wireless network for internet access and I don't see a way to connect to both Airport and the sports centers router at the same time. If the airport was able to pick up the wireless internet connection (wirelessly) the system would work perfectly. Any ideas?? Thanks!

In Airport Admin (for the Extreme or Espress with the printer), turn off "Distribute IP Addresses." This makes the Extreme/Express a wireless access point with the Other router remaining as the master - all computers (even if they try connecting through the AEX) are then in the same network (and can see the printer). (You can also change the broadcast channel of the AEX.)

Trying to connect with a Belkin G f5d7230-4 wireless router

I just bought a Belkin wireless router to connect my new macbook pro to the internet, and I tried running the easy install wizard that comes with the CD provided in the Belkin box. The ''wizard'' seems to be able to locate my internet connection, however it is not able to establish the good parameters in order to continue to the next installation step which is ''connect hardware''. This is the mesage that I get : the new set was not created. It doesn't say why it's not working ... and I didn't even get to the part where I connect my router.
I even called Belkin ... and they told me that my ethernet card must be disable on my computer, because they couldn't see why it wasn't working...and I really doubt this could be true. They told me to call apple care !
I am normally using a DSL modem to connect to the internet.
Please Help!
did anybody experienced that kind of problem before ? or do I really need to use that ''wizard easy install'' thing ??

I have multiple PCs, an iMac, MacBook Pro, MacBook, and a Mac Pro. All can use the Airport Extreme and Airport Express to connect to the LAN and the Internet, etc. I also have an old Linksys WAP (54G) that they can all connect to. All are set for WPA2. All three are fed through a 24-port Netgear managed switch that supports the LAN. A link goes to a Netgear FVS318 wired VPN router that connects to the actual DSL router. The switch has two Gigabit ports that support my Mac Pro and the PC "mothership". Airport in the Mac Pro has no issues. I have set the AEs up similar to the Linksys (bridge) and gone through the whole gamut of configurations. If you aren't interested in spending a bundle to replace your existing, a simple Airport Express out one of your wired ports will work. Use the DHCP of the Belkin, don't turn on DHCP in the AE, making it a bridge. You can still use the iTunes functionality and send them to the audio out on the AExpress. It is a pretty cool little device. But, if you want some heavy hardware, the Extreme N works great, save for the lack of a Gigabit Ethernet port for the Mac Pro. The Express is the cheapest way out of your dilemma. Or, a Linksys 54G (used) WAP. Netgears work pretty well also, but the lower priced unit of any manufacturer seem to have some issues.

Problem disabling wireless option on a BEFW11S4

Hi. Recently, my roommate making use of the wireless capability on our linksys decided to hardwire his connection like my other roommate and I. The topic describes the dilemma we're having now, and we believe it is what is contributing to an incredibly slow internet speed at the moment since we have many other wireless users in our area.
My roommate attempted to disable it on his computer by going into the setup as described by the manual. He used the default IP, went to set up and selected the option to disable wireless. Then he tested the wireless connection out to see if it was disabled, and he still saw our network available. I then tried accessing setup on my computer and it still reads as being "disabled," but it isn't.
I'm not sure if we just need to reset our router in a certain manner, if there's an issue with having to fill in our domain name, or whatever it is that is not making the alterations to our router stick. As you can tell, I'm not too router savvy, so any insight you can pass on to me would be most appreciated.

hi there, it might be that the wireless you're connecting is not from your wireless router.. it might be that the connection was from your neighbor.. the reason why i said this is because I just thought that your SSID might be the default "linksys"... of course, there are some, if not most, that will just leave their SSID as just "linksys"
to verify that the wireless being disabled is working, you will need to change the SSID of your router to see if you are still seeing your SSID... if not, then basically the disablity of wireless option is working

On an M425dn, I am unable to setup scan to network folder on a home wireless network

On an M425dn MFP, I am unable to setup 'Scan to Network Folder' on a home wireless network. The network folder exists and has been set to share with full permissions for everyone. The OS is Windows 7. The printer IP address is 192.168.1.104. I have used this in a browser to access the setup tab called Scan. I have established a network folder and have attempted to test the setup folder multiple times. The tests end in one of two ways. The attempt spins endlessly which requires a cancel action or it ends with the following error: "Cannot connect to the network folder. Ensure the shared folder name is correct." The network folder does indeed exist.
The computer name is Delta. The shared folder name is Images on my A: drive.
So the network path entered is \\DELTA\Images. By the way, printing to this network printer is always a succesful operation. Any guidance to solving this dilemma will be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Limit Airport Express to Wireless G

Is there any way to limit an N enabled AX to only attempt a Wireless G connection? I have a 2.4GHz wireless N (D-Link DIR-655) network but my AX seems to be much happier running G. I am perfectly OK with it running G but I would like the network to run N & G. I should mention that I am only using it for AirTunes and have it set to join my existing network.

Internet Connection Dilemma

So here is my situation. I have a modem and router setup, with the modem and router connected to my dad's PC by Ethernet, we have my phone and laptop connected wirelessly through the router. My room is probably 20 metres say from the router. Up until 2 weeks ago I haven't had a problem. We are with Telstra and have speeds of 100mbps. And I was achieving these speeds on wifi in my room, I was getting just as good as an Ethernet cable. Around 2 weeks a of this stopped, I was unable to play games, stream videos, even use Facebook. I would get drop outs like crazy, however whenever my macbook did connect it would always be full bars, but then drop out. Occasionally it would work fine but then an hour later problems again.
I have a good knowledge with computers and networking so I have done the usual troubleshooting steps, such as resetting router, unplugging, etc.
I was convinced it was a router issue. Since it was all working fine then randomly played up, but one factor has made me question myself. For example, my laptop will be on my desk and I will be connected full bars, but won't be able to do anything. I'd then get my iPhone 5 out and run a speedtest, it would be fine, and I'd be able to surf the net. Sometimes my iPhone speedtest would be much lower, but I'd still be able to surf the web at decent speeds. If it was my router, why does my phone work phone when it's right next to my non working laptop.
I thought about getting a wifi extender, because if I take my laptop outside my room, it'll be fine. My room is a pure black spot, but for only my laptop, not my iPhone, and for only the last 2 weeks. So this almost makes me think it's not my router, it's my laptop, so a wifi extender wouldn't help.
So then it's a laptop issue, BUT, as soon as I take my laptop out of my room, it works, so that clashes and really puts me in a dilemma. Is the iPhone 5 networking just have a better range with wifi? My router is an N router which both devices support
I thought it could be the network card in the laptop getting faulty, so I've ordered a usb wifi adapter from eBay with an antenna and support of up to 300mbps to see if that improves things.
Is there anything else I can try? I've reset pram/smac and done all the common router troubleshooting steps.
Sorry if this is in the wrong section or doesn't really give much information for others to give help, just really confusing me at the moment.

Sorry, my misunderstanding. I thought that you were using one of Apple's base stations. A careful rereading of your post indicates that you are using the iBook to share the connection via AirPort to the MacBook.
Unfortunately the Internet Sharing provided by OS X provides very little configuration options. The MacBook is on a different subnet than the Ethernet connected computers. There is no way to change that when you are using Internet Sharing.
The solution is to replace your wired router with a wireless router or at least get a wireless access point [even the AirPort Express (AX)] and use that instead of your iBook to create the wireless network.

Sir . I have a wifi connection at my home. And the problem is that except this laptop everyting else is getting connected to the wifi. I don't know the reason behind it but yes this is the actual case. And sir on troubleshooting the connection it says that your wireless connectivity is turned of. Sir I dont know wat to do and I am in a big dilemma. Bcz wid out this my no work can be done ...so plz luk after dis matter as early as possible and tell me the appropriate solution for it.

The technical issues causing such a huge dilemma for Verizon customers has not been adequately answered. There are conflicting messages on the Verizon site (upgrades,) as compared to what we are hearing from customer service when we call (service issues), and from the media (major issues). Could we please get a definitive answer as to the problem and expected rexovery time?

Cisco 7942G to Wireless Speaker

Here is my dilemma. I need to have a wireless speaker/mic in a conference room to allow me to use my Cisco 7942G phone for conferences (the phone will just sit on the side). I have tried various setups and nothing works. I have a Plantronics CS540, a Plantronics Calisto P830 and a Jabra Solemate HFS200.
I can get the phone connected with the CS540.
I can get the P830 connected to the HFS200.
However, I cannot get the Calisto to connect to either the CS540 or the phone itself.
If there is a simpler solution or something else that works, please let me know. Thank you in advance.

The Calisto P830 will only connect to PC, Mobile via Bluetooth, or traditional landlines. Can you just use your CS540 and have a second phone in the conference room for the speakerphone and the other participants?
Or better yet, a Polycom SoundStation with secondary mics or the wireless lapel mic. Good luck!

Intel Pro wireless 3945ABG and WPA 2 Question

I see that Intel says this adapter is compatible with WPA2 but I can only find WPA support in the Lenovo driver download. Without WPA2 AES I can't connect this laptop to many of the newer N wireless routers. Has anyone found a driver that support WPA 2?

I'm not sure I quite understand your dilemma...any Lenovo driver for this card will enable the type of encryption that you're looking for...typing this on a X60s with the exact same card and connected to the WPA-PSK network...
I'm using Windows to configure my networks, not Access Connections.
