Wireless downloads slower with BT Infinity

I recently upgraded from BT Broadband (ADSL2+ with BT Home Hub 1.0) to BT Infinity. I installed and switched over to the new BT Home Hub 3 before the BT Openreach engineer came, as I was worried about how wireless networking would work as the Hub had to be in a different location from the previous one.
I then ran some Broadband performance tests http://speedtester.bt.com/ to see how well the new arrangements worked. The upload speeds from my main PC (with a wireless N adapter) were in the previous range of 700 – 800 Kbps. The download speeds on average seemed a little slower than before at the 5 – 7 Mbps range, although I did achieve a new peak of 11 Mbps in the late evening.
After the switchover to BT Infinity, I ran the tests again. The upload speeds were very consistent and in the 7 – 8 Mbps range. The download speeds were in the 3 – 7 Mbps range, with most towards the lower end of this range.
I also ran a test late in the evening using a Netbook with an Ethernet connection to the Hub. This slightly exceeded the expected speeds for the BT Infinity service, with over 8 Mbps for uploads and over 35 Mbps for downloads.  On the old Hub with the Netbook and Ethernet connection I had got 670 Kbps for the upload speed and over 12 Mbps for the downloads.
Does anybody know why the wireless download speeds reduced after the switchover to BT Infinity? Is it a settings issue, a software bug, some other fault, or a feature of Home Hub 3 and BT Infinity? It does seem very strange that the upload speed over a wireless connection is faster than the download speed, as well as being much more consistent.

Dont know about that, but I have had my Infinity for a year now, and  the guy who set it up said, that if I go wireless, then my speed will drop.

  • Wireless significantly slower with time capsule

I have a 2T apple time capsule running latest firmware 7.6.4.  I have Cox cable and a 150 mb plan.  When I connect my iMac to the modem, I am consistently getting 175mb connections.  When I connect the TC, my speed over wireless drops to a 50mb connection.  I have restarted the TC with no effect at all on the speed.  I have attempted to restore the TC's settings through airport utility, but I just keep getting the "restore" window with the "spinning circle"--i.e. it ill not restore.  Any advice would be appreciated.  Thank you.  Also, I should add that the iMac is upstairs while the TC is downstairs.  I get a strong wireless signal.  I would assume download speeds will vary, but I wouldd not expect my speed to be 1/3 of what it should be.  Thanks again.

I would expect exactly what you are getting.
Wireless is not going to transfer real world speeds higher than about link speed divided by 3, maybe even 4.
Find your link speed. Hold down the option key and click the wireless fan in the top menu area.
Take the transmit rate and divide by 3..
You should realise that wireless is limited by Apple to 130Mbps at 2.4ghz although in newer equipment you can achieve 217Mbps.
For 5ghz the speed will be 450Mbps in the same room but drops off quickly.. the above shot is with the TC in the next room.. max link speed dropped from 450 to 162 as drop off at 5ghz is very rapid.

  • Time capsule wireless so slow with one Macbook but not other

We have a Time capsule network set up to run at 5 GHz, and (out of necessity because of the problems) an older wireless g access point running in parallel.
One macbook running Leopard gets good speed when connected to the 5Ghz network, as does the Apple TV, which can also stream almost flawlessly by airtunes to an airport express connected to a hifi.
However, if I try to connect to another macbook (still running Tiger) to the time capsule network (even with the other components switched off) then the connection is frequently really slow, such that the web becomes unusable and it is impossible to reliably stream to the express or ATV. However, if I switch to our old g rated wireless access point connected to the same router as the Time capsule then I get a much higher speed connection, although airtunes still intermittently drops sound, but I can stream an HD movie to ATV with no problem.
Why is one Macbook fine but the other is so slow on the 5Ghz network?

Glad to see the overwhelming response to my post : )
Anyway, I have upgraded the OS to Snow Leopard and the 5Ghz network seems to have speeded up considerably on this macbook. Perhaps it was a problem with Tiger.

  • HP Officejet Pro 8500 prints slow with Lion.  One page every 1.5 to 2 min.  Apple support offered no help and HP unable to help. Any suggestions?

HP Officejet Pro 8500 Wireless prints slow with lion. One page every 1.5 to 2 min.  Apple support and HP no help.  Any suggestions?

Although printer is wireless capable I have it connected directly to iMac via USB to help with speed.  I just completed resetting printer and reinstalling to no avail, still approx 2 min to print one page.

  • Why slow wireless download Macbook Pro Bootcamp Xp Leopard

Problem: wireless download speed is much slower running windows Xp on a macbook pro (bootcamp) than when running OS X. Example OS X = 1,164 KB/sec download, 496 upload vs Xp = 265 KB/sec download, 940 KB/sec upload.
I have a Macbook Pro Duo Core running OS X 10.5 with the newest Boot camp drivers for windows installed. Test was done using Speakeasy speed test, Safari/Explorer 7.
funny how only the download speed is slow under Xp, not the upload speed.
    thanks for any help,
    Paul

Here's a solution that worked for me, my chipset is a Broadcom 802.11n (4328). It's a 24" iMac (Pre Alu).
Hopefully it helps others. Broadcom have updated WHQL drivers (picked mine up from here, they have Vista versions on there too) and it was just a case of installing those and changing 2 settings.
Changing IBSS mode to 802.11a/b/g/n Auto:
    http://img220.imageshack.us/my.php?image=configip9.png
Setting the Rate (802.11b/g) to 54:

Now my speed is on par with Leopard

  • Improve Download Speed with Mobile Wireless Card

I just purchased a GT MAX 3.6 Express LaptopConnect Card from AT&T to allow mobile internet access. While I can connect to the internet, the speed is very slow (I'm getting 3 of 7 bars). I understand there might be a Mac "booster" I can purchase. Has anyone heard of such a thing? Or, do you know how I can improve my download speeds with a wireless card? Thanks kindly for your help on this...

I received M Q today. To my surprise, there is no way to connect M Q to PB or any computer. I called Verizon and talked with their data connect department. They confirmed that M Q cannot be used as a modem The only device that will is Treo 700p. I am returning the unit by FedEx today. Treo is xpensive. So I will downgrade from MBP to PB G4 15" and use Verizon's Broadband Wireless PCMCIA card

  • Can I Download Lion with AT&T 4g wireless device?

Can I download Lion with an AT&T 4G wireless device?

I would have expected the question to go, "can I RE-download..." if that were the case, which is why I gave the long version.
I recently bought Mountain Lion by this method, and was surprised by how convoluted it is AND how long you may wait for the download code to be sent. Once installed, I can RE-download on a whim, as Mountain Lion does appear on my Purchases page in the MacApp Store.

  • Imac  is very slow with downloading mail

My imac is the ast weeks very slow with downlaoading mail.
I am using mail 5.3 from apple
Nothing has recently been chanched in my internet setting or internet speed
Anybody an idea what can be wrong?

Hi, I worked out what you recommended, but I do not see any difference at speed.
Mail starts normal, though that is also somewhat slow,
Before it has finished downloading mail (even is there os no mail!) it takes sometimes 2 minutes!
Also there was no"boing"when starting up, with following your procedure, is it normal?

  • Very slow download speeds with ATT U-Verse

    Hello,
Experiencing very slow download speeds with Macbook Pro 2011, on Lion,  and ATT UVerse Max, which should allow for an avg. 11-12 MBPS speed. Instead, I get a fluctuating 60-370 kbps speed. I am not experiencing this problem on my Windows machines (Laptop running Windows 7 and Desktop on XP), it is only affecting the Macbook pro. I wonder if this issue is a known problem with ATT U-Verse and Macs, I spent hours yesterday with their support online and they couldn't help me, stating that from their side all settings were OK; the first representative from ATT re-booted the router remotely and that seemed to work for about 10 minutes, and then it went back to a crawling speed...
    Any suggestions welcome!
    Thanks

Do you have QOS enabled in your router? Did you try plugging the win7 laptop directly and check the speed?

  • Video downloads from internet are so slow with Quicktime, any remedies?

Downloads are so slow with Quicktime. Quicktime diagnostics say nothing is wrong. I can put my other Inspiron next to each other and download and this one takes forever. This signal is strong and at the same rate as other Inspiron
    Dell Inspiron   Windows XP

I don't think your choppy videos have anything to do w/your computer. I have a G5 iMac and have no problems playing any video including YouTube. However, I am still using the "flawless" Tiger and you are using Leopard. I've seen your problem mentioned quite a few time on the QT board. You may wanna cross-post there also. Since you do not believe your ISP is the issue, make sure you have the following installed:
    Flip4Mac
    VLC Media Player
    Perian (AVI and FLV support)
Adobe Flash Player Software (latest version)
Regarding FireFox. I've noticed a slowness since its last 2 updates. I've had to clear out the caches each day before use to make it faster which is a PITA! Suggest that you post on FF message boards. There are plenty of the same "slowness" complaints from Mac as well as PC users. So it's not just you. The slowness is affecting quite a few folks. The more folks that complain on FF message boards the better.

  • Wireless Download speed much slower than it should be

Wireless Download speed on Belkin N300 is only 1.5 mps and hard wired speed is 50 mps.  Firmware is up to date, what else can I do??  What is the Wireless Router that Comcast recomends??

A Verizon Tech support employee helped solve the issue. Apparrently we still had the same plan when we started and were only getting 768 kbps download and were paying like $21 dollar for it. So we are going to upgrade and get the starter plan and pay $20 a month and get 1 MB download. I might even get the 3 MB download plan.

  • Slow speeds on Infinity

    Hi guys,
I am hoping that someone will be able to explain to me my lack of speed with BT Infinity. When this was first installed in November I was enjoying fast internet browsing, downloading and streaming speeds. Using speedtests I was getting approx. 35Mb for download, however this has now diminished to a lowly 0.5Mb or less. I have applied for the new faster BT Infinity from when I first received it and am seeing no different to the speed.
I have a slightly unusual set-up at home in that the BT Home Hub 3 is located in a room downstairs connecting to 3 devices and the 1GB port is connected to a Linksys Router upstairs which is connecting 2 PC's. I am using this set-up at the moment as I cannot afford to purchase a switch, this set-up was working fine before even with my previous broadband provider.
I have tried to set the wireless set-up for dual band and this seemed to cause more problems and have since moved back to single band for the wireless however, I'm still struggling to maintain the speeds that I had back in November.
I set a twitter message to BT and was asked to run their speedtest which indicated I was getting 0Mbps for download and 0.37Mbps for upload and also similar speeds from the thinkbroadband and speedtest websites. I'm now at a loss as to what I need to do in order to get my speeds back up as to what they were originally.
Any help on what I can try will be much appreciated.
    Kind regards,
    Jiten
    Jiten

I no longer have the IP profile for that particular instance, however I have run the test again today and this is the IP profile from the BT speedtest:
IP Profile for your line is - 77.43 Mbps
I seem to still have a slow speed on Infinity even though the IP profile is much higher than what it was when I ran the test earlier.
    Any ideas?

  • Can i use a belkin wireless g router with an iMac

can i use a belkin wireless g router with an imac

It will work. The wireless card in iMacs (recent ones) work with n, g, and b networks. The g protocol is slower (54 mbs) versus n (130 mbs up to 300 mbs). My employer has hundreds of such access points and has been updating them all to n, but there are still some g routers they haven't gotten to, and they work fine. 54 mbs is not bad, it's about 5 megabytes/sec roughly. Typical actual throughput is lower than these numbers by ~ 50%, so doing a large Mac OS update download of 300 Megabytes would take about ~ 2 minutes with a g router, and maybe a bit less than 1 minute with an n router.

  • Peculiar Download Slowness in OS 10.4.6

Download speeds, as measured by the speed tests at speakeasy.net and testmy.net, are consistently and reproducibly 300-500 Kbps slower with my Mac Mini 1.5 GHz(PPC) running OS 10.4.6, than in my 900MHz iBook running OS 10.2.8 and also my Dell PC running Windows XP. All three computers are in the same room, using the same 802.11b wireless connection to a cable modem via a LinkSys router.
I even tried the speed tests using the same Mini running under Classic (OS 9.2.2) and was surprised to find fast download speeds essentially identical to those with Jaguar and the PC.
I have turned off IPv6, manually entered DNS servers in TCP/IP, tweaked settings with RMAC and Cocktail, but none of it has made a lasting difference. I'm puzzled.
I posted these same observations a couple of weeks ago, but the post was greeted with stifled yawns and no-one responded.

I have been having the same problem, particularly running bittorrent clients. However, because of the variety of factors that can affect the speeds achievable through this protocol, it took me a while to identify the issue. I've tried manipulationing seetings within the sotware and the system, I've made sure that the right ports are leading to the right places through my firewalls (and, actually, I briefly tried dropping all my security completely for a quick test, but that made no difference either).
I've tried changing between Airport and a wired ethernet connection - no diffference either way.
For some reason the download speeds I can get seem to be capped at about 10% of speeds achieved regularly in comparable ways. I've pretty much ruled everything out now except whatever it might be that has changed with 10.4.6.
Any suggestions (however wild) would be welcomed.
    Thanks
    Andrew
