Wireless dropout issues after 10.5.3 upgrade

As recommended [here|http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1540120&tstart=0] I am starting a new topic to focus on my problem.
My sad history begins with the 10.5.3 update (about a month ago), which brought on the problems. After trying all the tricks, and needing a solid solution I clean-installed 10.5.2, which worked a charm. Out of interest I then upgraded my clean install to 10.5.3, which broke the airport again so I clean installed 10.5.2 again : (. Fast forward to the recent 10.5.4 release, which I saw some positive feedback on regarding the airport problems, so I gave it a try. Sadly it broke my wireless again, so I clean installed 10.5.2 only to find the problem was still there. I now have no "safe" build, which is why I am here asking for help. I have since installed the 10.5.4 update again.
-- My symptoms are similar to many in these forums.
My wireless signal will stay full and steady with little to no activity (overnight, no programs), however after using more request intensive services (chat, bittorrent, skype, opening multiple http pages) my wireless signal, as shown in the menu "fan" indicator, will drop from 4/4 to 1/4. At this point I will either lose connection entirely and have to turn airport off/on, or my connection will struggle for a few minutes (hovers around 1/4 - 3/4 bars) before dying and requiring the off/on treatment, I have never seen the connection recover from it's dying phase.
-- My details are as follows:
As you will see from the following details, My iMac 24" has a static IP and am using the Open DNS servers. I am running a 54Mb wireless router with no security (my neighbours are all old Japanese people) connected to a fibre optic router (100/100 Mbit connection). My wireless router is an old D-Link model, but I cannot find the model name for the life of me, the unit is completely unbranded, I only know it's a D-Link from the iStumbler readout. Thus a firmware update is the only solution, which I have not been able to pursue. The router is positioned two floors above me, which is why the transmit rate is low. I have however, been using the router with no issues for over 3 years.

Due to the fact that I am only getting a transmit rate of 24Mbit at full signal, I would consider buying a newer router as a solution.
Thank-you for reading, I hope a solution can be found.

Unfortunately, the bars are a poor measure of signal quality. To my (limited) understanding, the effectively measure the 'loudness' of the signal - but not its quality.
Actually, it's my understanding the bars are based on a signal level and quality metric, which is why they change over time.
For example, one scenario that would result in this type of behavior is an environment with lots of interference or noise from other routers or devices on the 2.4 GHz band.
The Mac will initially see the signal well and connect to it but as time goes on the degree of interference and noise is such that it's impossible to maintain a reliable connection to the router. As the Mac tries different things to keep a connection - including dropping the speed at which it's talking to the router - the signal "bars" will drop to reflect those reception difficulties. Finally if it can no longer maintain a reliable connection of any type it will just be dropped.
The beacons lost errors being emitted means that the scenario I've outlined above may very well be playing out. WiFi relies on periodic beacon signals sent from the router to stay in sync with it.
Without the beacons, the connection cannot be maintained and the Mac must disassociate from the router.
If you're curious as to what 802.11 beacons are, there's a pretty nice writeup on them here; to briefly quote it:
The amount of overhead that the transmissions of beacon frames generate is substantial; however, the beacon serves a variety of functions. For example, each beacon transmission identifies the presence of an access point. By default, radio NICs passively scan all RF channels and listen for beacons coming from access points in order to find a suitable access point.
When a beacon is found, the radio NIC learns a great deal about that particular network. This enables a ranking of access points based on the received signal strength of the beacon, along with capability information regarding the network. The radio NIC can then associate with the most preferable access point.
After association, the station continues to scan for other beacons in case the signal from the currently-associated access point become too weak to maintain communications. As the radio NIC receives beacons from the associated access point, the radio NIC updates its local clock to maintain timing synchronization with the access point and other stations. In addition, the radio NIC will abide by any other changes, such as data rate, that the frame body of the beacon indicates.
The beacons also support stations implementing power saving mode. With infrastructure networks, the access point will buffer frames destined for sleeping stations and announce which radio NICs have frames waiting through the TIM that's part of the beacon. On the other hand, the beacon in ad hoc network marks the beginning of a period where stations buffering frames can alert sleeping stations that frames are waiting for delivery.
As you can see, beacons are very important. With them, a wireless LAN simply won't work.

I use the Kensington iPad case with wireless bluetooth keyboard, model K39294. Since the upgrade to iOS 4.3, the keyboard shows it is paired, but won't connect and the bluetooth icon on the iPad stays greyed out. To get them to connect and work I have to forget the device in the iPad settings/general/bluetooth menu and then re-pair them. The keyboard will work for a day, but then stops working again. • Wireless dhcp issue after upgrading WLC to 7.6.100

    Hi All,
We have upgraded our controllers to version 7.6.100. After upgrading, the access points also upgraded their version to 15.2(4)JB3. But, the problem is that after this process the APs do not get IP. It stays on this state:
*Sep 26 03:55:36.334: %CAPWAP-3-DHCP_RENEW: Could not discover WLC using DHCP IP. Renewing DHCP IP.
    Not in Bound state.
The DCHP configuration is OK, since it is working in other two controllers we have and that we are not upgrading untill this issue is solved.
If we connect the APs via console and configure a static IP and controller's IP, the AP registers and works fine. But, the access points are located in 20 remote sites, so we would like to avoid going site by site.
Has anyone suffered this issue and knows how to "recover" those access points?
Thank you very mucho for your help!

    Hi,
Thank you for your answer conraddaniel.
But, our issue was an error on the DHCP. The DHCP server pool for the APs was configured with lease time infinite (on a Cisco 6500). After capturing the packets and debugging on the AP we realized that the AP were receiving wrong values:
    DHCP: Scan: Renewal time: 2147483647
    DHCP: Scan: Rebind time: 536870911
So, on the AP debugging we saw:
DHCP: Scan: Renewal time larger than Rebind time
    On Cisco documentation:
T1 Timer(Renewal) After a certain portion of the lease time has expired, you attempt to contact the server that initially granted the lease in order to renew the lease so its IP address can still be used.
T2 Timer(Rebinding) If renewal with the original leasing server fails, because, for example, the server was taken offline, then you ideally try to rebind to any active DHCP server and try to extend its current lease with any server that allows it to do so.
These T1 and T2 timers can be any values, but must be less than the IP address lease duration. T1 Timer must be less than T2. Generally T1 is set to 50 percent of the lease duration and T2 is set to 87.5 percent of the lease duration. Use this rule to set T1 and T2 timers.
On the previous version of the WLC, the DHCP was configured in the same way and we confirmed that the APs received same times, but they ignored those wrong values.
The workaround was to modify the lease time of the DHCP pool (1 day). This way, both timers had valid values and the APs accepted the DHCP OFFER. We still do not know why with lease infinite these timers have wrong values (a bug?).

    Hello,

I followed the usual steps to set up my network/wifi with all the required modules and packages (broadcom-wl from the AUR, etc.) but it doesn't work like it did with gnome2 and xfce4.
My iwconfig/ifconfig output looks like dave1022's. Don't know if this is of any help...
The nm-applet in the gnome3 "panel" actually lists nearby wireless networks, but once I click on one of them, gnome asks me for authentification with my root password (user password does not work). I don't think it should be this way. If I enter my root password here, nothing happens whenever I click on the concerned network to connect to it. I deleted the /etc/NetworkManager/system-connections/<SSID> file to reset the authentification process.
I tried to consult the gnome3 pages in the wiki, but couldn't find any valueable hints either...does anyone have any idea what I might have done wrong or forgotten?
It's exactly the same for me and it's driving me nuts. I'm using iwl3945
    [EDIT]
Well... actually installing the applet solved it for me. Is the applet actually needed for Gnome 3 or is a workaround?

    Internet through wireless is hopeless.

However using the toshiba service station it lists 12 updates including one for the Realtek wireless driver.

  • Reporting issues after SP1 to R2 upgrade

    Hi Guys.
I'm having an issue with reporting after upgrading System Center 2012 Configuration Manager SP1 to R2 CU2.
For some reason SSRS is not allowing users to logon from a remote workstation. The Reporting node in the Monitoring workspace does not list any reports. The SSRS reporting portal prompts for authentication but does not accept any credentials.  Both
are accessible when logged on to the Primary Site Server where SQL and SSRS are installed.
After some investigation I’ve determined that this is a permissions issue and this is where I need your combined wisdom. At first I thought this might be as simple as adding the proper RBAC permissions but if it was permissions issue for my account then
why would it be accessible from the site server but not a remote client….
    Some techy info for you.
With the R2 Upgrade a few new permissions were required for the SSRS service account in order for RBAC to work with Reporting.  The service account has been added to the Domain Built in group “Windows Authorization Access” and has the “Read TokenGroupsGlobalAndUniversal”
AD attribute set to “Allow”. These are the permissions Microsoft has listed for the Service Account in the TechNet Library.
The SRSRP.log has a ton of errors that I believe may be the cause of the problem. The error is “Unable to translate SID [SID for Account] error: [Some or all identity references could not be translated.] SMS_STS_REPORTING_POINT 9/9/2014
4:51:00 PM 5300 (0x14B4)” which I believe to be a logon failure error. Each time a user try's to authenticate with the site this error is generated.
So I’m thinking this may be a permissions issue with the Service Account that runs SSRS or the SQL Engine may also require a Service Account.
At this point I’m thinking the SQL Engine may also require an AD service account, but before I create another Service Account  I wanted to consult the IT Geniuses and see what kind of incite you may have.
    Thanks for your help,
    Gabe

    Hi Guys,
One of our SQL DBA's was able to resolve the issue. It turned out to be a Kerberos Authentication problem with SSRS.
    Cause :
The problem  was due to Kerberos authentication. Kerberos is an authentication protocol that allows clients that create authentication tokens to associate a specific destination to that token. In this case there is a mismatch between the destination
specified in the token and the report server process configuration. Due to this mismatch, the underlying Kerberos authentication scheme supported by Windows prevents report server from authenticating the user.
    Resolution:
1-Remove RSWindowsNegotiate and ensure RSWindowsNTLM is specified in the file rsreportserver.config and save the config file 2-Stop and start SQL server and reporting services.

  • Networking issues after a move and upgrade

I just moved, and did a massive system upgrade, moving over fully to systemd.
Everything works fine, except my network seems to crap out after a random period of time (sometimes 2 hours, sometimes 10 minutes, sometimes it stays up for days).
ive used different ports on my router, different ethernet cables, so im pretty sure the issue is with my laptop
i used the ethernet-static script and put in my own network info (using 10.0.0.0/24 network), a correct default gateway, and working nameservers.
on my main computer i have MPD going over a SMB share, and sometimes it just stops working. When i open up Wireshark i see im getting ICMP Dest unreachable errors.
What could be causing this? Any ideas?

No. Something is wrong with modprobe I guess. I noticed yesterday that the line that usually looked lieke this
    eth1      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:10:A7:27:5D:A2
    was like this
eth1-00      Link encap:UNSPEC  HWaddr 00-10-A7-27-5D-A2-00-00-00-00 or something like that
So I did a manual modprobe 8139too and I got
    eth2      Link encap:Ethernet  HWaddr 00:10:A7:27:5D:A2
I changed the settings in rc.conf from eth1 to eth2, restarted the networking script and the network was OK. But this doesn's anwer the question what was wrong with it in the first place...

  • Sleep issues after 10.4.7 upgrade

I upgraded to 10.4.7 immediately after it was issued and I had no issues. A couple of weeks later the FAX software Pagesender would not logout on a scheduled shutdown. I ran Diskwarrior to repair the directory and I thought ev3erything was OK but then all of a sudden my computer would not wake from sleep. By pushing numberous buttons it the screen would wake but the cursor was frozen. I checked my energy saver settings and noticed it was set to spin down the discs when possible. I unchecked this option and I thought that the problem was gone. I was away for a couple of days and I keep the computer on during the day as I receive some faxes and when I tried to acces the computer on my return I was back to square one. The only way I can get the computer to function normally is to do a hard restart. Any thoughts? This condition applys to my G4 desktop machine

Can you clarify if you've checked for any updates to your FAX software?
If you open Applications> Utilities> Console, go to the View menu, and slect show log list, does anything suggestive show up from around the time of one of the crashes? Look in system.log and console.log, in /Library/logs/Crash Reporter, and in /var/log/fax

  • PWA issues after Office 2010 SP2 upgrade

We recently upgraded some client machines that have Project 2010 Professional installed to Project SP2.  Several of these users also use PWA.
After the upgrade, I heard from a few of these users that in PWA, the Workflow Approval buttons were unavailable, and that they were unable to export to Excel.  I checked with another user who uses the same Project Server and did
not receive the update, and he had the same issue.
I did find kb2817580 that describes these exact issues, but the timing is suspicious with the client SP2 upgrade.  Is there something in the Project 2010 SP2 update that would cause this problem on Project Server, or does Server need to be upgraded
concurrently with the client update?  I was not under the impression that the local Project update would affect Project Server.  Is that incorrect?

Cwoodin, in my experience, the client doesn't make any modifications at the server.
About the updates, i would recommend you to apply SP2 at the server as well. Besides that, take a look at the ULS logs to see if it spits any errors.

  • Airport issues after 10.6.7 upgrade

I have a MacBook Pro and after update to 10.6.7 (combo) I'm having a very unstable connection through Airport Express.
Sometimes when it happens I just get my wife's Macbook (10.6.5) and on her MB everything is ok, same thing using my iPhone, works fine, but my MBP cannot connect on internet but keeps connected over my home wireless network. So a workaround is turn airport off and on, but this works for a while and the issue comes back!
    Sad, very sad!

After installing the combo update, did you repair permissions and restart your computer?
    System Preferences/Internet & Network/Network
    Unlock the padlock
    Locations: Automatic
    Highlight Airport
    Click the Assist Me button
In the popup window click the Diagnostic button.
System Preferences/Network- Unlock padlock. Highlight Airport. Network Name-select your name. Click on the Advanced button. Airport/Preferred Networks-delete all that is not your network.
Place a check mark next to "Remember networks this computer has joined." Click the OK button and lock the padlock. Restart your computer.

  • Minor issues after KDE 4.9 upgrade.

    Hello All.
After upgrading to KDE 4.9, I noticed:
    1.  My computer took some extra time to shutdown (only when running on AC
power).  I ran a diff on a snapshot of my processes taken before starting
X, and after shutting it down, and found that kactivitymanagerd is the
problem-- it does not respond to SIGTERM, only SIGKILL.  I guess it is not
a huge issue, but it annoys me nevertheless.  Executing `pkill --signal 9
kactivityman` solves the issue, but I don't know where to put it...  my
.xinitrc runs `exec startkde`, so I never get the chance there.  Any
suggestions?  Also, is anyone else having this problem?  Is this worth a
        bug report?
    2.  Some of the kwin effects seem less smooth.  In particular, the "show
desktop grid" effect (most others seem fine).  Did anyone else notice
this?  Maybe I'm crazy, but I swear it was smoother in 4.8.  If anyone can
confirm, did you find an answer?  I tried to set the thumbnails to
"smooth" instead of "accurate", but it didn't seem to help.  By the way,
this is on an X220 with intel graphics hardware (and the i915 kernel
        module).
Has anyone successfully downgraded KDE from their cache before?  I want to go
back to 4.8, but I'm scared of creating a much larger disaster.
    Thanks in advance.
    ***Update***
Running my power-saving script fixes the first issue with kactivitymanagerd
(which is why it only happened on AC).  I get the feeling this will be
something obscure, so it is probably best to not waste your time
investigating.  But if you do run into this, I'm happy to share my script,
    fwiw

Thanks for the replies, all : )

I tried out dolphin and konqueror just now, and had no issues.  I don't use
them very often, but I've never seen them crash before.
@masteryod:  Indeed.  But before filing bug reports, I like to check with the
friendly Arch community to get a little feedback and make sure that, as you
mentioned, it isn't my own fault for having some messed up configuration.
This is a valid use of the forum, right?
PS Lead developer of kwin is suggesting porting desktop grid to
    qml...
I'm not sure what to think of the QML re-write: that sounds like a
re-organization / feature addition, but I don't know if it acknowledges the
    4.8 --> 4.9 performance regression that we've observed.  I think will file a
report as soon as I get the chance.
Also, I have one update:  I think the first problem I mentioned
(kactivitymanagerd refusing to die) might be somewhat me-specific, so don't
look too hard for a solution.  The reason it only happens when I am on AC is
that in this case my power-saving script is *not* run.  If I run the powersave
script, kactivitymanagerd will exit at the right time o_O  No clue why the
script would fix this.  There's nothing exotic in the script, and I still
contend this is a bug, but I'm not sure it would be worth your time to
    investigate.
    Thanks again, everyone.

  • Join Issues After 4i to 10g Upgrade

    Hi,
We have noticed issues with folder joins after upgrading from 4i to 10g. These joins existed and worked as expected in 4i. But after the upgrade to 10g, reports will pull all data instead of limiting to the parameters.
For example, we have a order headers folder and invoice headers folder in a business area created from the database. The 2 folders have a join. If I create a report that pulls columns from both folders and then create parameters to limit the invoice creation date, it will pull all records from the database instead of limiting to the parameters.
Has anyone else experienced this issue? Can someone point me to some documentation that relates to the issue?
    Any help is greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Troy

    Hi Troy,
I seem to remember that there is a difference in how 4i and 10g handle outer joins. There is also an issue associated with applying joins to different types of folders. Please send me a copy of the SQL generated from the "view SQL" function for this worksheet and I'll try to help you debug the issue. It would also be helpful if you could do this for 4i also.

  • Issues after Tiger to SL Upgrade

About 5 months ago I upgraded from Tiger to SL... although Tiger never gave me any issues I wanted to be on the latest version. I have an older MAC so needed to upgrade via the (expensive) Box Set. I did the change via the "upgrade" and not the complete install (erase disk). Since then upgrade my MAC has given me issues... it freezes at times requiring a hard shutdown... other times the graphics do not refresh.. the desktop icons tun into horizontal lines... again requiring a hard shutdown. I ran the Apple hardware test and no errors were identified.
I can not find the common cause... there does not appear to be any common events before the problems. The only key change in the use of the MAC is my wife's use of FACEBOOK games... especially the farming ones... I've installed FireFox for her just for those games as she say's the games don;t work right in Safari (and of course not on the iPad)...
Do I need to do a complete install of SL? Any other suggestions ? Thanks in advance...

DaddyPaycheck, could you please explain why you ask what external peripherals he has attached. I'm not being snarky — I am just curious because I also had random freezing of programs after upgrading to Snow Leopard from Tiger. After a month of trying various fixes, including more than one clean install and taking my computer into a shop (they could not replicate my problem, and my computer passed their diagnostic tests with no issues), I gave up on Snow Leopard and reinstalled Tiger, which runs just fine on my computer.
Anyway, the fact that my computer seemed to run fine on Snow Leopard in the shop made me wonder if my peripherals were the culprit, since they weren't attached when the computer was in the shop. All I have hooked up to my computer is an HP Deskjet F4180 printer and a Lacie external hard drive. BUT, while they are plugged into the USB ports on my iMac, both are ALWAYS turned off unless I'm actually using them. Could simply having these external peripherals plugged into my computer — and not actually being "on" — cause the problem I was having?
I've been monitoring Apple Discussions for a couple of months now, and plenty of people are experiencing graphics-related problems and freezing using Snow Leopard, so it seems the problem goes deeper than just the peripherals. In my own case, I'm guessing my mid-2007 iMac just isn't up to running Snow Leopard despite Apple's insistence it is. I don't know what I would do if it turned out the problem actually is caused by my peripherals. After having already spent a couple of hundred dollars on Snow Leopard and iLife 11 and the computer repair shop, I don't feel like buying a new printer and/or external hard drive just so I can use Snow Leopard. Still, as I said, I'm curious to know what you know about whether peripherals could be causing our problems.
    Thanks.
