Wireless Encryption Help

I set up a 128 WEP encryption on my home wi-fi network using my work PC but my iBook G4 won't let me join. I know the 16 digit code and my password, but can't to a place to enter either. Any help?
Thanks,
TP

tproud78, Welcome to the discussion area!
It is unclear whether your work PC or iBook is having difficulty joining your wireless network.
If your equipment is compatible with WPA2 or WPA, you should change the wireless encryption to that and avoid the incompatibilities caused by WEP. WPA2 and WPA are also extremely strong compared to WEP.
If you must use 128 bit WEP, for better compatibility you should use a 13 ASCII character password or a 26 hexadecimal character password.

  • AEBS(n) Add Wireless Client Help?

Using the Airport Utility for my AEBS(n), it has a menu item in the Base Station Menu (on the menu bar) labeled "Add Wireless Clients..." It apparently allows you to have a temporary pin number to allow short access to the network without the WPA key.
The textbox only allows 8 numbers, and won't allow letters/characters. I've tried to get this to work, but after entering an arbitrary Pin in the textbox, the Continue button at the bottom of the screen never becomes enabled.
I have WPA/WPA2 enabled. Is there something in my setup that is preventing this from working? The help files are no help...

That is only an option if you are using MAC address filtering. Since you are not, you don't have to worry about that.
Is your AirPort Express (AX) set to 802.11n operation only? If so, is this Windows laptop capable of 802.11n? If not you will need to configure the AX to a 802.11b/g compatible mode.
What type of wireless encryption are you using? Is this Windows laptop compatible with that?
If you are outside the US, try configuring the AX to use a channel between 1 and 11.

  • TKIP Wireless encryption problem

    Hi,
We have a wireless network with TKIP wireless encryption on it. When I have tried to connect my Macbook Pro (Mac OS X, Version 10.4.6) to this network it only allows me to type in a WEP key. Obviously this doesn't work and I am unable to connect to the network. what do I need to do to enable a more up to date encryption method on the laptop?
    Cheers
    Lenny

We have a D-Link DI-524 wireless Router attached to the modem. Most of the laptops on the network are Microsoft XP Pro and 1 MacBook Pro. The wireless encryption on the router is set to TKIP but the Mac only has an option to include a WEP key. I don't want to set the encryption of the router to WEP as we are in a large shared building. 20 laptops (XP Pro) connect just fine. How can I get this Mac to also connect to the network?
    Thanks

  • MacBook Pro now works with wireless encryption

I am offering my two cents. After spending a morning on the phone with TDS and part of the afternoon with apple yesterday, today I finally have my MacBook Pro talking wireless with an encryption key.
My MBP would connect without an encryption key but would not with an encrytion key. The MBP is 2.16GHz model, with 10.4.9 plus all updates; the GW is an Actiontec GT704-WG.
My original encryption key which did not work was 128bit key 112233445566778899aabbccdd. When this key was in the router and entered onto the MBP it would not connect.
When I changed to 64bit encryption and entered an ASCII ABCDE on the router, then on the MBP entered a 64bit key of 4142434445 (the equivalent hexcodes), everything connected.
I have not tried this method with a 128 bit encryption key.
I hope this helps those who can connect without encryption but not with encryption.

iCloud technically starts working with Lion, but I recommend Mavericks, because it is a free upgrade (and a more recent one).

  • Wireless Bridge Help

    Hi all,
I have a Wireless P2P bridge set up between two buildings.  They are about 450 feet apart, Root bridge has a 16dbi Yagi antenna (ebay) and nonroot has a 12dbi Flat Panel antenna.  Both bridges are 1231G APs set to Root and Nonroot mode, respectively.  I have a few questions.  Right now the link is working and is reliably connected.  My data rates right now are 1.0  ,  2.0  ,  5.5  ,  6.0  ,  9.0  ,  11.0  ,  12.0  ,  18.0  ,  24.0  ,  36.0  ,  48.0  ,  54.0                                   Mb/sec on both sides.  I consistenly get on the lower end of the scale, usually hovering around 5.5-12mb/sec range on the nonroot side.  Root is typically transmitting at 48 or 54 mb.
My signal should be pretty good at -61 and 34-37 SNR, right?
At work we have a wireless bridge (1310 hardware) and it is set to :::speed  basic-9.0 basic-12.0 basic-18.0 basic-24.0 basic-36.0 basic-48.0 basic-54.0::: so I went into mine (1231G hardware) and set it to the same.  Voila!  I connected at 24-54mb.  All seemed well - until I noticed that now that I wasnt using the B rates, I had a spotty connection that was going up and down.  Changed it back to all rates, and I again have a stable connection.
What can I do to stabilize and set the connection to OFDM rates so it will be fast and reliable?  The distance really shouldnt be an issue, and I can see from one antenna to the other.  Would 2 panel antennas be better?  Should I find higher gain antennas?  Should I switch to the 1310 hardware because it is designed as a bridge?  HELP!!!

    Hi George,
Tonight I installed a matching panel antenna (l-com HP2414) on my side, and have similar results (actually worse results at first).  I upped my side transmit to CCK 30 and OFDM 30 from 20/20 and now have about the same performance (see red below).  I have a question - how important is it to have the wifi antenna clear?  I have it mounted on the same mast as our TV antenna- see pic attached.  Should I move it to it's own mast?  I can mount another one on a second chimney if necessary, or raise the TV antenna up a few feet.
I am also not past sticking a yagi at both sides if that will improve my signal to noise ratio...connection still is around 36-54mb, but download speeds on the other side are still only 6mb, not the full 25 we get on the wire off the core, or even the 16 I got on the test nonroot bridge I set up at the same side as the root.

  • Which wireless encryption protocols are supported by Photosmart 7515?

and how could I have found this out before buying the printer?  According to the test printout sheet it looks like this printer only supports WPA(not WPA2)/AES(not TKIP) encryption.  Is this true? Did I waste my money on yet another wireless device with out-of-date wireless support?
I simply cannot get this printer to connect to my network.  I've given the printer's MAC address to the router, I've given the network SSID and password to the printer, and the only thing the printer tells me on the troubleshooting printout is that it wants to use WPA/AES encryption, which is not an option for my router.  My router will do WPA with an unspecified encryption (there's not an option box available to select AES or TKIP) or WPA2 with AES or TKIP.  It is a 802.11b/g/n capable router.
What makes me absolutely furious about this is that I cannot find any of this information available in any documentation, even online.  I was careful because I got burned on the Kindle that only supports WEP encryption.
    Bill Starritt

    Hello BillStar,
To my understanding , the printer has nothing to do with the Wirless Encryption compatibility, as the encryption is set and managed on the ROUTER.
When you run  the Wireless Setup on the printer , it displays the list of Wireless networks and you need to manually select your SSID ( network name).
If your network has an ENCRYPTION, then the printer will ask you to enter the Encryption Key or the Passphrase . Once you enter the same, then it connects to the printer and the Router Assisgns an IP address to the printer.

  • AEGE wireless encryption problem

I recently bought an AE GE wich I received last week. When configured first time it was upgraded with 7.2.1 firmware, also my MBP was upgraded with latest Airport Utility 5.2.1. Connected to my AEGE I have 1 MBP, 1 AppleTV, 2 Fujitsu-Siemens Vista laptops through wireless and 1 sippura, 1 dreambox and one Oki C3200n wired. I also have a USB HD connected. Everything was great until the morning of the 5th day. Waking up my MBP I got connected to my WPA/WPA2 WLAN, but I only got a 169.x.x.x IP address. I checked the Vista computers, the same issue there, no DHCP only a 169.x.x.x address. AppleTV no IP at all. If I manually configure the computers with a IP address, some packets goes through, but the packet loss is huge.
Whatever combination of encryption used and channel selected, the AEGE is unusable. Using no encryption on the wlan gives me normal behaviour. Right now I have downgraded to 7.2 but the issues remains. Hardware error or a software problem?

  • Wireless Encryption Password

I went to the router page that lists my Wireless and then Wireless Security information and I still can't find the encryption 'key'.  All I see is "disabled" in the security mode.  I am trying to set up a Crane Wifi radio and need the ESSID.  I see nothing on the bottom of my router as information.  I have no idea where to find this information.  Also, when a friend was here recently, he could not get into the wifi due to my security.  He said I needed to jot down the password or key so people can get in.  Anyone out there that can help me with this?  Thanks.

Since I didn't get any responses when I got up this a.m., I went to the Linksys on-line chat for support. 2-hours later...turns out that you are right, I did not have any security, however I did have something that kept bumping everyone out that wanted in (friends visiting).  When they had me create the key, the radio got in right away.  The only problem is that this created a different problem with my dell laptop which the linksys tech person thought was the basis for the problem.  Even though we set up the security with a key, and I logged in properly the 1st time with the laptop, when I 'shut down' and rebooted the laptop didn't recognize anything.  So, there is this lengthy process to get the laptop to recognize the network connections.  I'm not happy about having to do that everytime I boot up the laptop, but my husband is happy the radio is connected to the router for the internet.  So this is problem #1.  Problem #2 is that he says the radio comes in and out which the radio brochure says is a bad internet connection probably via the router.  So, now I don't know whether the router is bad or my comcast cable isn't working properly.
More information than you wanted, right?!  Any thought?  Paula

  • New to the wireless world, help...

Ok, i got my first iMac a few days ago... love it btw, just getting use to the change from pc.... anyway, my question.
1: All we have is just a modem right now for the PC downstairs, it's a normal cheap compaq PC, I really wanted wired internet but i don't believe the cable guy will be able to wire from downstairs to upstairs since it's across the house and upstairs, is that possible or not?
2: My mom called the company when we were first getting the internet and she told them we want to connect two computer, the lady on the phone said, we would need 2 modems..... now i heard you can't have 2 modems on the same internet connection.. or can you? if so, that solves my first problem, i can then do wired for my computer.
3: If 1 and 2 fail and i have to go wireless, iMac comes with a wireless card/access point in them right? if so, the down stairs computer, i would need a wireless router and a wireless card for it correct? (there is no wireless card in the cheap compaq) ok well, i would think installing a wireless card would be no problem.. i hope.. if it is hard, any tips?
4: for those who have an xbox 360 and wireless network, does that wireless apdator work good? fast connection and all?

Your cable installer will more then likely run the cabling externally, up an outside wall and into the room where you want the modem.
However, you don't need two modems, and there is no reason to pay the cable company for two accounts. You can use a single account and a single modem, just connect the modem to a wired/wireless router and then plug your computers into the router, problem solved.
As to running the wires upstairs, can't help you with that, since it is to dependent on your homes floor plan. But to give you some common ideas for how to run cabling between floors:
I ideally in a two story structure you want to use the basement or crawl space for distributing networking wiring to the first floor, and the attic to distribute wiring to the second floor. The usual problem is to get wiring from the basement/crawl space to the attic.
    1) Use closets, when a closet on the first floor aligns with a closet or unused area on the second floor, they (the closets) make it easy to run cabling between floors.
    2) Use utility rooms, laundries, furnace, etc. These rooms like closets usually good choices to use to run cabling between floors.
    3) External, when no other method is available, you can run Ethernet cabling rated for outdoor use along the outside of your home to tie the basement and attic together. Usually when run externally, look for a way to run the cable without it being plainly visible. Good choices are at the corners of a house, near drainage pipe or gutter down spots. Penetrating the house can be done via basement window sashes, and attic soffits or vents. You can also drill through the external wall to closets or utility rooms which in the house.
Remember to use outdoor rated cabling, it is resistant to cracking a breaking caused by UV exposure, as well as freeze/that cycles. Using plain Ethernet cabling can lead to having to replace it at a later date as it breaks down from exposure to the elements.
If you live in an area of the country which commonly receives thunderstorms, yo may also wish to have the external cabling connected to a lightning arrester. Good networking stores sell small lightning arresters for Ethernet cabling. You usually won't find these at your local computer store, but a search online should bring up dozens of sources.
Lastly, you can of course run wirelessly to avoid the wired cabling. However, I usually recommend wired networking whenever possible as it provides faster network access and a great deal more security.
