Wireless External Hard Drive

Is it possible to get one of these that connects to Time Machine and can back up my mac - similar to Time Capsule but without all the network issues.
Thanks.

You might want to take a look at these:
http://www.lacie.com/us/products/range.htm?id=10007
(I don't use Time Machine, but I looked at the first one on that page and it said it was TM compatible....). Although I own two LaCie hard drives currently, I've never used their wireless or network hard drives, so I can't comment on them. My FW hard drives are reliable.

I am not sure what you mean by normal external but yes, it is a network hard disk drive.. and you can use wireless.. the only trouble then is, if there is no ethernet connection and internet is by wireless to a different router, then you cannot do both at once.

Can I just regard a time capsule as a wireless external drive? I don't think I need time machine to back up, I just want more space to store my files (music, moves, photos). To save the space on my Mac, can I move those things to TC, and open them(watch movies, photos and listen to music) directly?
And, if I bootcamp windows 8 os, can I still share/use the stuff on the TC, like a regular(wireless) external hard drive?

Apple says specifically not to move iphoto to network drive.
    iphoto network no no.

It's recommended that you store your iPhoto library on a locally mounted hard drive. Storing your iPhoto library on a network share can lead to poor performance, data corruption, or data loss.

  • Setting Up Time Capsule as a wireless external hard drive

I have a 2 TB TC that I wish to set-up as a wireless external hard drive at my office for my private files only not the entire company.  I would like for this to be private as well.  Here is my set-up now.
    MB Pro late 2011
Connect to company network & internet via ethernet.
I cannot connect the TC to company network - security reasons - company policy
I would like to use the TC as a external hard drive that I can access wirelessly for using Time Machine and backing up other image files from my scanner.
The problem is that when I setup the TC it is telling me to connect ethernet.  I can't because that is how I access my company network and internet.
    Can this be done?  Thanks!!

But....in order to now connect to the TC via wireless, you will have to first unplug any Ethernet connection that may be present on your Mac.
Or, if you do not want to unplug and replug the Ethenret cable, you could change the connection order to have your computer connect to wireless first and then Ethernet.
In this case, when you turn off the wireless on the Mac, the Ethernet connection will become active.
The downside here is that you will have to turn the wireless back on to be able to back up or connect to the TC. In other words, backups will not be automatic unless you are connected via wireless to the TC.
There should be a way around this.
The issue is that the computer cannot use two gateways at once. It will either use wireless or ethernet. But in fact the computer does not need a gateway to communicate with the local network.
Follow Bob's instructions to setup the TC. But make sure the TC is using a different IP subnet to the main network.. eg.. main network is 192.168.1.x (which you can see from the ethernet IP address) then the TC on its default IP 10.0.1.1 is fine.. but if the main network uses 10.0.x.x which is fairly common, then swap the TC over to 192.168.1.1 for instance. It can be any value.. as long as not in the same subnet (ip range) as the main network..
Then on the computer.. keep the ethernet as the top connection.
Set the airport IP address manually.
Following the first example.. set the IP address to 10.0.1.10 with 255.255.255.0 subnet.
Do not set router IP or gateway or dns. (this is the most important part).
    Apply all of that.
You should be able to detect the TC and connect to it. But it will not stop your main network working at the same time. And there is no link between them as long as you do not route it in the MBP.
Come back if you have issues.. or my explanation is lacking somewhere.
To do the setup it is usually required to do ethernet first and then you can unplug it.
If you have wifi in the office.. try and make sure you do not interfere. And set it manually with a different name for 5ghz.. and join only to the 5ghz network.. it will be both faster and less likely to cause interference to others. Most will not even see it. Set suitable password with wpa2 personal security so no one else can connect.

  • Time Capsule as a wireless external hard drive

I'm thinking of purchasing a Time Capsule device to use as a wireless external hard drive. I want to convieniently connect my mac to it and transfer large files (about 5 gig or so). However, I want to do so without consuming Internet bandwidth. Is this possible, and is it a practical setup? Also, how long would it take to transfer a 5 gig file? I would also use the device to do backups of my mac. Can that also be done wirelessly without consuming Internet bandwidth?
    Thanks for your time.

I think, it may be best to just buy a big external HD. It will even be cheaper than the TC. You wont have to worry about bandwidth etc, going over Thunderbolt/Firewire, etc.

  • Rescue and Recovery doesn't see my wireless external hard drive

R&R does not see my wireless external hard drive so I cannot backup - help?
    Thanks
    Bennie

I've seen some versions of R&R refuse to show backups when their total space taken was at or near the limit set in R&R. In advanced mode, set the limit as high as possible and see if they appear.
This is if you are working from the installed R&R. If you're running from a rcovery CD, never mind...

  • How do I set up my time capsule as wireless external hard drive?

I have a new iMac and and a new 2 TB Time Capsule. I bought the Time Capsule to not only use with time machine but also as a wireless external hard drive. What is the best way to set this up from the beginning? Do I just create a new folder under the data folder in my Time Capsule and then start dragging and dropping files? I want to make sure I have the best setup from the beginning. Thanks

My opinion is that the Time Capsule should really be used as it was designed....for Time Machine backups....not as an "everyday" hard drive.
For one thing, access to files on the Time Capsule drive if you place movies, music, images, etc. on the drive is going to be very slow....and really slow if you plan to connect using wireless. Expect lag, stutters, signal drops, etc.
That brings up another question.....if you move your movies, music, images, etc over to the Time Capsule drive.....how will you back up this data?  Surely, you plan to keep "original" versions on one drive and "copies" on another to be safe, correct?
My suggestion would be to add an external USB or FireWire drive and attach it directly to your Mac. Move your movies, music, etc. to that drive. Access will be very fast to your media this way. Highly recommended.
Then, Time Machine will backup both your Mac and the hard drive.....so you have backups of everything. Make sense?
Although I do not recommend that you move your files over to the Time Capsule drive based on the information that you have provided so far....If you still want to setup the disk image on the Time Capsule drive, follow these basic steps:
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utiltiies > Disk Utility
Click New Image at the top of the window
Make sure that the little arrow next to the Save As box is pointing up
Navigate through the Finder like interace to open up the Time Capsule drive
Name the disk image and select the size that you want
    Click Create
Allow a very long time for the image to created.

  • Lost connection to wireless external hard drive

I had been backing up to a wireless external hard drive on my 15" mac book pro, my wife's 13" macbook and my son's imac. Now, all of the sudden, no one can access the 1 TB Mybook hard drive connected to our Airport router.
When I cut power to the router, the HD or my cable modem, we can access the HD for a while, but we all soon lose access. I now use Snow leopard, but the others use 10.5.6. Any ideas would be helpful.
We can't complete 1 backup before we lose our connection.

    Thanks, Paycheck!
I formatted the drive the right way (can't remember what it's called), but I'll look into sharing based on a local machine (the imac prolly). is that a reliable way to connect and back up? I was using time machine for all 3 machines, so I'd like to continue that if possible.
How do I hang the drive off the imac and connect to it from the laptops?
    Thanks again for the reply.

  • Streaming media from wireless external hard drive and MBP to TV?

Hi everyone. I have a retina MBP and have recently bought a Sony Bravia smart tv with wireless. I have a time machine (the new one) with an external hard drive connected to it with all my media, photo, movies etc. My tv is connected to my wireless from the time machine and I'm wondering how do I stream media from my external hard drive to my tv? And how do I stream media from my MBP to my tv wirelessly? I can't seem to figure it out. Also mirroring my MBP desktop to my tv wirelessly, can it be done without an apple tv? Thanks in advance.

I had the same issue. It was due to the appalling performance of the USB connection to the disk, not any issue with the wireless connection itself. My iMac was within 7m of the router, on the same floor, with a clear line of sight and good reported connection speed. I have the latest late-2009 version of the AEBS running the 7.5 firmware. This has loads of performance problems (read these forums). I'm hoping that Apple will release the new firmware (7.51) for download soon and then the issue may be resolved.

  • What do I need to create a wireless external hard drive?

Here's the situation. Hubs and I have just combined households. Between us we have a Macbook Pro laptop (10.5.8. mine), an HP laptop (his), a westell router from century link and 3 external firewire/usb hardrves, one of which serves as my time capsule. We also have a wireless printer.
One of the external harddrives has my tv shows and movies, downloaded from itunes, stored temporarily since my mac is out of space. We'd like to be able to access our external harddrives wirelessly, so that I can move my itunes library and media files to one and access them wirelessly, have my time capsule hooked up permenantly, and so he could access his moies/shows/music on his external hard drive wirelessly.
What do I need to create a wireless hookup for my external hard drives that is compatible with macs and pcs, and is relatively easy to do (neither of us are particularly tech savvy, but with the right instructions we can do okay)

That router you have is really not a router. It is a DSL modem that does have rudimentary router with one port.
What you really need to do is set the westel into Bridged Ethernet mode, that disables the router function in it, and get yourself a good router that has a USB port to connect a USB drive or printer to it. there may be models that have more then one USB port so you could connect multiple devices to the router.
It isn't hard making these changes but i won't go into it here. For that go to DSLReports.com and look up your ISP and then the FAQs for your ISP. More then likely someone has posted detailed instruction on how to do what I described above for your model Westel modem and your ISP.
Or follow Csound1's link to a wireless NAS (Network Attached Storage).
    Good Luck.

  • MP3's over Wireless External Hard Drive

I'm trying to figure out the simpliest set-up to access my mp3s on an external hard drive wirelessly without setting up a server.
Can anyone make a recommendation. Are there any particular routers that allow me to plug in a USB 2 hard driver and access it wirelessly from my powerbook?
    Thanks

I think you want something like this
    http://www.dlink.com/products/?sec=1&pid=421
I have never used this so I cant say how it works.
This model looks like a good one for the following reason:
Unlike other Network Storage Adapters, the DNS-G120 preserves all existing files on your USB drives and does not require you to reformat your USB drive.
*The only thing is I am not sure what file system your drive is using. If its OSX format then this would not work

  • Wireless external hard drive or not?

I have an older mac book pro (early 2008) running OSX Yosemite. I want to get an external drive and completely move my iPhoto and iTunes libraries to stay and run off of.
Should this be a wireless hard drive or not? I like the idea of not having to be connected all the time to access them since I'm often not at my desk with my laptop all the time but don't know if speed would be compromised with a wireless external drive.
Any recommendations one way or the other? Or of good brands/models?
    Thanks!!

Go into the Bios and click on the Advanced tab. There should be a setting for the USB Legacy Emulation mode. By default, it is usually enabled. The USB Legacy Mode is for older USB devices like keyboards and disk drives. Disable the USB Legacy mode and try again. There may be a problem with some of the newer USB devices like hard drives and wireless mice with the USB Legacy mode enabled.

  • Best wireless external hard drive for mac

I recently purchased a macbook pro with a 256 SSD HD.  This was not enough storage and I didn't have the budget for the 512 HD, so I purchased a 1 TB external USB 3.0.  This works fine, but I have to keep my laptop connected to this which is counter productive.
I want a wireless hard drive that I can use to download films and songs onto and then stream on my macbook pro.  I also want to be able to store files on this and access them like I would with a regular hard drive.
I'm looking at the Seagate 1TB Plus but I have concerns.  It uses wifi to connect...  My macbook is always connected to my home network over wifi.  Does this hard drive connect into my existing home network or does it broadcast it's own signal.  If it broadcast's it's own, must I then disconnect  from my home network to connect to the external drive?\
    All advice appreciated.
    Thanks

    I use two of these, a 1 TB and a 2 TB:

They have FireWire 800 ports, and that makes a huge difference.

  • How do i set my time capsule as a wireless external hard drive?

it is currently doing regular automatic back-ups of our system, but we want to set it as our hard drive as well.

If Time Machine backups are occurring correctly, then you already have the Time Capsule set up as a hard drive on your network.
Although not necessarily recommended, that means that you can manually drag/drop or copy/paste data directly to the Time Capsule disk.
Are you asking how to do this, or how to locate the drive?  Please clarify.
