  • RV220W wireless file transfer slow at 2MBps?

I have a RV220W operating in 2.4GHz N-only mode. Channel bandwidth is set to 20MHz, channel to 6 (a site survey shows that channel as completely clear), WPA2/AES. I am connected to a TrendNet wireless bridge. The admin page for that wireless bridge shows a link quality of 100% with a signal strength of 71%. If I select a higher channel (11), the signal strength drops to 51%.
I have a Windows 7 PC connected to the Trendnet bridge and a Windows 7 server connected to the RV220W, both via a 1Gbps LAN port. When I transfer a file from the server to the PC or vice versa, I get a lowsy 2MBps (~20Mbps) transfer rate. That seems awfully slow. I tried channel bonding from 20 to 40 MHz, but that did not help. What could I do to improve this??

    Hello Awesterink,
Wireless is extremely subjective. To approach this, I would to break everything down starting at the basics.
Disconnect all wireless clients from the network
Remove the bridge from the network
Connect a single computer wireless to the RV220W
Connect from a close proximity of the router
    Test the connection
Introduce more clients to the RV220W connection
    Test the connection
Introduce the bridge to the connection
    Test the connection
Test the connection through the bridge with 1 client
Test the connection through the bridge with more clients
Try to narrow down the break down as much as possible. For each change, test to see the result. Once you identify where things are bogging down, then we have a direction to go.

  • Time Capsule wireless file transfer - terribly slow until...

I've got a really strange problem with Airport and Time Capsule. Wirelessly copying a file from my MacBook 10.5.2 to Time Capsule is terribly slow - until my screen goes to sleep!
80 MB is estimated to 45 min, and only 2-3 MB is copied in two minutes. When I or Energy Saver turn the display off, the same file is copied in 35 seconds!
I discovered this by accident, but it also explains why my first backup (12 GB) looked like it would take forever, but after both me and the display went to sleep, backup was done in two hours.
Anyone else having the same problem? Anyone having the solution?
    Thanks! Joachim

    Hi Joachim,
i think it is the same for me. But only when using timemachine not when doing normal file operations. Maybe timemachine is saving bandwith while the machine is not in screen saver mode...
Your machine should not go to sleep mode when a timemachine backup is running
What is your wireless connections speed?
You can see the rate when 'ALT + clicking' on the airport symbol in the menu bar.

  • Wireless file transfer cripple internet connection. Why?

Using 10.6.8 with all the latest updates.
Whenever I'm transferring lots of files, not necessary huge files with 802.11n AirPort base station to a network storage or another Mac, my internet connection is crippled to a crawl. Did all the repair and maintenance but the problem persist.
Never have this problem for years until the recent security update, I think.
Google like **** and can't seems to find a solution. Have another Mac with Lion install and with similar activities, no problem. Do not wish to update my working Mac to Lion yet.
Anyone any idea what could be problem and have a possible fix. I did reapply the 10.6.8 Combo Update and no fix.

  • Wi-Fi Share file transfer PlayBook-MacBook problem

Following instructions in KB26068, I set up Wi-Fi Sharing wireless file transfer from my MacBook to my PlayBook, but there is a glitch.  When I select a file from a MacBook folder and drag it to the Media icon on the desktop, I get the message:
“One or more items can’t be copied to “media” because you don’t have permission to read them.”
This happens with every file, regardless of type, that I attempt to transfer, even, a Word file I have created myself.  I suspect there is a simple switch setting I have to change; can anyone help?  Thanks,

  • IChatAV and file transfer over wireless network

    Hi there...
I'd like to let you in on my predicament. Firstly, a bit of background.
I decided to buy my folks an old iMac from eBay in Australia - and pay for their broadband connection - so that I could video chat to them from the UK, and they could see my 5 year old son for the first time in 4 years. Cute, eh?
Well, everything was working fine until I decided to go wireless in my home about 3 months ago. I have a static IP address, and purchased a nice new Airport Express to integrate into the system. I allocated my G5 iMac it's own network address (10.0.1.2), and the base station the master address (10.0.1.1). From there, the base station communicates to the router via the static IP... Sound ok?
Anyway - NOW (or, for as long as I can recall), I CANNOT for the life of me send files over the connection. Video chat and audio chat are fine (although OCCASIONALLY it takes a few goes to be able to see THEM on my computer - I think their bandwidth isn't THAT stable at 512Kbps down and 128Kbps up) - however, the correct ports have been unblocked on the OSX firewall AND the Airport Express base station.
And just so that you know it's not the folks' fault - I can't send documents/images over the network to friends I KNOW are competent (or, at least more competent than my parents!). There's always an error message at the receiver's end, and the file I'm attempting to send just times out.
Has anyone any suggestions as to how I might be able to resolve this problem before I expire from old age?!?
    Your thoughts are REALLY appreciated!

    Hi Ralph
I can see where that might be the case, but file transfer worked flawlessly BEFORE I went wireless using the same modem. The only way to unblock ports on my router is to turn NAT off - it creates a DMZ, so it permits unhindered 2-way traffic...
It's a pretty confusing piece of kit. Maybe I should just get a Netgear anyway!
I have a laptop on the wireless network as well, and file transfer works a treat between it and the iMac. All I can think of is that because I'm now working on a LAN, there's a blockage to get out to the "Real World" - even though it's easy for video to pass through.
I'll check my unblocked ports again, just to be sure. I'm unfamilar with the term "Jabber" - is that what Apple decided to call one of the elements of iChat? Excuse my ignorance...!

  • File transfer: AFP vs FTP

    Setup:
Cable modem to Linksys WRT54g broadcasting only in G only mode for PBG4.
AEBSn#1 in bridge mode via Ethernet from Linksys, N only mode, broadcasting wirelessly.
AEBSn#2 is wirelessly extending N-only from AEBSn#1, and is connected to a mini with external hard drive.
Using PBG4, if I mount a volume from the mini and transfer a file, transfer time is very slow: approx. 20 minutes for a 200MB file. If I FTP from PBG4 into the mini, transfer time is 2 minutes.
(I think the same happens if I use a Macbook Pro connected to the N-only network, but it's in for repairs right now, so I can't be sure.)
Any idea why the transfer times are so different b/w AFP and FTP and, more importantly, what I can do to remedy this? Thanks.

Same problem here. I have two AEBS Gigabit in bridge mode. Transfering a file via FTP or with Apple Remote Access (ARD) brings up to 3 MB/sec. Same file and same configuration connected via AFP only brings 60 kB/sec.
I hope somebody has an idea how to fix this.
    Thanks in advance

  • I woke up at 3am to find my MacBook Pro in the middle of a file transfer using AirDrop.

I woke up at 3am to find my MacBook Pro in the middle of a file transfer using AirDrop. I had not accepted any file transfers via AirDrop as I was asleep so I am a bit confused by all the posts that say that the only way it will work is by the end user accepting a request to transfer files. I am on a home network which has both a soft and hard firewall. I checked my firewall logs and have no signs of intrusion or intrusion attempts. I checked my network map to see see if someone had brute forced my router and was using it but the only assets listed were mine. My router is set up to not be accessable from wireless computers, and is filtered to only allow use by a assets in the MAC Address list. I am an IT by trade but this is my first mac so I am not completely savy in the ways of the ways of macdom. I have found several posts with suggestions on how to turn off and came up with the following terminal command "defaults write com.apple.NetworkBrowser DisableAirDrop -boolean YES". My question is this, how is it possible that my AirDrop was activated and in the middle of a file tranfer if I did not initiate it? I do have a MacMini on my network but its WiFi is turned off so the transfer was not with it. I have read on different posts that you cannot AirDrop if the computer is not on the same network but there were no foreign assets on my network. So my question is this
    1. If AirDrop can not be used with another computer if it is not on the same network, how was it being used?
    2. How can AirDrop be used to xfer files if I did not accept or initate it?
It seems to be a pretty big security hole to me. Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.
    Ethan

It could just be a bad disc - I use Verbatim and have only had one fail in a ten-year time period. Try getting a batch of Verbatims and see if you have any problems. I didn't even know that there were Kodak branded discs...

  • Port 548 Shutting Down File Transfer Over Network

OK, nobody laugh, but I am trying to transfer some old work files from an ancient PowerBook 3400 (including many on Zip disks) running OS 8.1 to one of our newer machines so we can look through them at our leisure later and save those of interest.
On the PowerBook, I have successfully connected to both of the new machines (see below) via Chooser and started to copy files to those machines. In the middle of the copy, after a few minutes, I get the following message: 192.168.1.xx:548 "The file server connection has closed down". 192.168.1.xx is the LAN IP address of the receiving machine. Personal File Sharing is allowed, and file permissions have been given to Others in the receiving folder. Do I need to do authorize something on Port 548 to allow the transfer?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

  • File Transfer Error Between Ichat 2.1 and Ichat 3

I am trying to send my brother some files. He has an Ibook G4 and so do I. He is running Ichat 3 on Tiger and I am running Ichat 2.1. Both of us are using a wireless connection through our own personal cable modems. He can send me files and I can accept them and get them without problems. Every time I try to send him a file, before it starts, we get an error 'File Transfer Error' file name not transferred.
He says he has no problems receiving files from other buddies of all different types of operating systems.
I don't recall having any problems sending or receiving from any of my other buddies either.
Is this just an OS X.3 vs OS X.4 issue? Or is there something weird with my Ibook?
Has anyone else had this problem? Thanks,
    -Chris

    Hi cjmagnuss,
Can your brother send files to other people.
It sounds like it might be his end.
File Transfers happen on Port 5190 on the UDP protocol.
Some modems and router have problems if they have to list Protocols when Port Forwading.
Is this the case for him ?

  • 4500EA LAN File Transfer Speed

My XBOX started complaining when I began using Windows Media Center to stream videos from my PC to my XBOX. I found out that I had a wireless G router provided by verizon which wasn't fast enough to stream videos. SO, I went out and purchased a 4500EA router expecting it to be the fastest thing I had ever seen.
Now it seems a bit slow when trying to stream video from my laptop to the XBOX and i'm a tad bit confused as to why. So I did a file transfer from a desktop wired directly to the router from a laptop in the same room wirelessly connected to the network and my speed is about 4mbps. 4MBPS!? This device is supposed to be capable of moving packets LAN side at 450MBPS.
Both of my PC's are quad core, newer  model PCs. I've tried moving files now for several hours with the same results. I've toyed around with my wireless adapters, changed power settings, full duplex, half, changed mtu sizes, changed security settings. I'm out of ideas.
Is getting about 1% of the advertised bandwidth normal? Or is something wrong?

    1. Without knowing the wireless adapters you use it's impossible to say how much you might get under very good circumstances.
    2. The advertised 450 Mbit/s is as usual with networking the theoretical boundary which would be possible only under absolutely ideal circumstances not using 802.11. In reality a compatible adapter might get maybe 1/2 of that under very good circumstances.
    3. In reality you often won't get a 450 Mbit/s or 300 Mbit/s connection rate (which is only an indicator for the signalling and encoding used) but only a 144 Mbit/s connection at least for the 2.4 GHz band because there is too much interference.
    4. Toying around with settings usually makes things only worse, in particular if you don't carefully revert all settings back to the original settings.
    5. What connection rate did you get with your desktop? What adapter is in the desktop?

  • Local file transfer speed slow on E1200

On a local file transfer (computer to NAS or NAS to computer) my file transfer speed with the E1200 is way too slow. I would expect the Wireless N speed to be at least 54mbps (megabits per second), which would be equivalent to 9 MegaBytes per second.
In practice the speed of transfer appears to be at 8mbps (1 MegaByte per second). Here is a screen shot:
The speed is the same whether I copy from the computer (on a wireless N link) to the NAS, or from the NAS (on a 100Mbit ethernet port on the E1200) to the computer.  The NAS is brand new, auto configured to a RAID-1 setup with two new drives.
Anyone know why this is?  is the encryption (WPA2-PSK/AES) slowing down the transfer? The same problem occurred with copying a folder of photos as with copying this large file.  I don't think I can upgrade the firmware on my device, as I have the first version of the E1200.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

    Sabretooth --
There is no option to set the Qos to zero.  I can set it to "auto" in which case the number has no effect.
I could set it to manual but it restricts me to a range as you can see from the graphic.
In case you are wondering, my internet speed is 10Mbps downstream, 5Mbps upstream.  So I am getting the same speed for the internet that I am getting for a local transfer.
The next troubleshooting step is to bypass the wireless and hook my PC to the router.  I will let you know if that makes a difference.
