Wireless home stereo system

Hi,
I'd like to use a MacMini as a home stereo system using wireless speakers. We have a nice sony system but no where to set it up in our new home and I'd rather get rid of all the wire and keep it out of sight. What's needed to do this? It is possible, yes? Thanks for any ideas. I saw the post on airexpress but that doesn't really address my needs.

The Apple Airport Express and a stereo connection cable are exactly what you need to do this. You also need powered speakers, or speakers that get their power through an AV Receiver and amp.
The Airport Express is a wireless broadband router that can be directly connected to the Mac mini (wired or wirelessly) and used to distribute your Internet connection to other networked computers in the house.
Significantly, the Airport Express also has a single audio jack that allows you to connect either an analog (RCA-style) audio cable or a digital optical SPDIF cable -- either can be connected to the back of your AV Receiver, but you'll get the best quality using the digital cable (assuming your AV Receiver has a free optical digital port). Once the AEX is connected, you assign one of the receiver's Input ports to the computer/AEX. So, instead of connecting a stereo CD or tape player to the receiver, you connect the computer.
The stereo connection kit (cables) must be purchased separately.
We connected the AEX to our computer network using a Category 6 (RJ-45) Ethernet cable. While you can set up the Express to receive network signals wirelessly, it will be more reliable, and possiby faster (depending on the topology and setup), if you rely on Ethernet where possible. This way, the cable or DSL modem is hard-wired to the AEX and the only portion of the network that is wireless is between the wireless computers and the AEX.

  • Need help planning home stereo system utilizing Itunes,iPs, airplay

    Hello,
the internet is overwhelming me with Info, so I will ask you guys my question.
How to best build a home stereo system playing my itunes libraries.
    Here are my stats:
Itunes library is housed in external 1 TB drive, worked off a Windows laptop ( Sony Viao)
I have and use two Itunes accounts ( one for US and one for Germany store)
Have an older Ipod click ( older gen, ), I phone 4S and Ipad 2,
will be upgrading to new iphone and ipad this year.
    What I want to do:
At the moment we have no home stereo system or home theater.  Been happy using the HDMI connector playing video from Ipad to TV. To be honest I do most of my TV viewing directly from the Ipad as it's very transportable.
Music I listen more with headphones, but have been missing my old hi-fi system from 10 years ago, which I no longer have. ( Birthing and raising 2 kids the past 8 years made me forget what I have missed . ).
Anyways it's time to get serious again.
I need to first start with a basic receiver and speakers.
    Question 1:
What kind of a receiver do you recommend? There are so many options now besides hooking DVD/CD player to Receiver/tuner. Now you have wifi options ( airplay etc...). where I understand you can stream your itunes movie/music wifi.  We would want a traditional DVD/CD hook up and itunes.
    Question 2:
Digitial Quality: Does streaming via airplay to a receiver give digitial quality in music? I read that most Iphone/pod docks only offer analog hookup. What about digital. I know there are a few ie. Onkyo ND-S1 that are digitial. Does airplay give the same quality over wifi as a hook-up??
Question 3: I am willing to have most of my library on a ipod/ipad , but what would be the best way to access my itunes library via the exterrnal drive WITHOUT having to run a computer?? also do Airplay and appletv work together, same thing? or need both?
Question 4: Our house is big and not open. this means investing in a single set- up in main area downstairs. But what are some cheaper options ( Sonos too much money for us) for a system more spread out. Can I run from one receiver  one set of speakers with wire hook-up in main room and wireless elsewhere . and how does the wireless work ( wifi?)
I hope I made sense, kinds still brainstorming in my head.

    Hi,
I see no one has taken up the challenge so I'll give it a go
Here's the Apple info for multiple iPods:
How to use multiple iPods with one computer
It has a link to an article on how to share music between different accounts on the same computer which you should read.
    1. When you say 'Archive entire CD collection...' I assume you are talking about loading all your CDs into one or more iTunes libraries?
    2. Assuming one or more iTunes libraries then all you need to do is set the import options correctly. iTunes>Preferences>Advanced>Importing>Import using Apple Lossless Encoder
    3. This would seem to indicate you need one iTunes library. It is the computer that is authorised: iTunes: About Music Store authorization and deauthorization
    4. For each user to have unique song ratings you will need multiple iTunes libraries.
If Lossless and AAC are in the same Library then Smart Playlists will do the trick as you can have the condition 'Kind does not contain Apple Lossless'
You can set the view options to show you what Kind of track in iTunes.
Hope this gets you going on the right tracks.
    Regards,
    Colin R.

  • Why lower audo levels when connecting to home stereo system

I have connected an audio cable to the earphone output on the Nano. This cable has two RCA connectors that connect to the line-in of my home stereo system. It works fine except for one thing. The volume is lower than other sources that feed into a "line-in" input. To make things even across the system, is there some type of devise that will increase the output level of the headphone jack on the Nano? Or does using an Apple cable make any difference. I would think this little problem is just a case of the headphone output being of a lower output level than a "line-out" output.
    Thanks for suggestions.

"I would think this little problem is just a case of the headphone output being of a lower output level than a "line-out" output."
It is, which is why many people who want to do this use the iPod dock, which has a proper 'line out' socket.

  • Can time capsule allow me to stream music from my itunes library directly to my home stereo system?  Is there anyway to access my itunes library from my tv?

can time capsule allow me to stream music from my itunes library directly to my home stereo system?  Is there anyway to access my itunes library from my tv?

Sorry, not sure if I understand what you are asking.
Are you thinking of moving your iTunes / Media Folder from your Mac to the Time Capsule?
If you do this...when...not if...the Time Capsule drive has a problem....you lose everything because you have no backup for the iTunes library.
A much safer plan would be to add an external hard drive to your computer and move the iTunes library there.
Then, if you are using Time Machine for backups, it will back up both your Mac and the hard drive.  Now you have "originals" on one drive and backups on another.
In order to stream music from the iTunes library, iTunes must always be open on your computer.
Is there anyway to access my itunes library from my tv?
Yes, if your TV has an HDMI input and you have an Apple TV.

  • Connecting my home stereo system to my macbook pro

I want to connect my stereo system to my MacBook Pro in order to put some of my Pops old vinyl onto CD to play when out and about. Please can someone advise best option. Usual stereo phono out from the amp.
    Thanks
    Nii Naku

Well, there are many options you can use. If you have a home stereo, with only two channels, you can go to radio shack and get a splitter cable, one with the red and black/white RCA connectors on one end, and then the 1/8th inch headphone connector on the other end, and then plug the RCA's into you stereo in the line out ports, and then the headphone into the line in on the MBP, and you are all set. You can even go into system prefs and sound under line in or recording, play the record and see what the MBP is registering for line in volume and adjust it to get the best sound.

  • Wireless Home Theatre System Interfering with my Macbookpro to Airport

I brought a wireless 6.1 home theatre system for my living room and now my macbook pro cannot link up to my airport (the flat one) that is located in my bedroom when I'm watching dvd and wants to work on my macbook pro at the same time. Turning on internet robustness doesn't work.
If I switch off the system, my macbook pro detects the airport immediately and connects.
The frustrating thing is that when my home theatre system is on, my macbook pro detects most of my neighbours' wireless routers except my airport!
Is there a workaround? Thanks in advance.

sparkblessedbe, Welcome to the discussion area!
Configure your AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS) to use a different channel. Change the channel until you find one that works or you run out of channels.

If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:
Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store
The best way depends upon your stereo system. If you system has an AUX input you can get a cable that goes from the headphone jack to the AUX in

  • How to play music off of PC laptop wirelessly to stereo system?

I have a networked music library of downloaded music, ripped cds,on several windows PC computers which I want to run to my stereo system.    I had an old Roku but it never worked well and finally gave up the ghost.  Ideally I want to control the playlists via a laptop and not some clunky led remote.  I also would like to be able to put these into my iphone easily.

would be nice to tell us what kind of cord (eg 3.5 mm stereo mini cord, digital etc..) go into system preferences....sound...make sure that line out is chosen. make sure to plug it into the right socket on the back, the one that looks like a speaker (just sayin'). the cord could be bad, as well. Failing that, open up Audio Midi setup, and make sure things are okay there-not set to digital, necessarily--check your speakers--then click on "Done" and quit it.
    hopefully something will work

  • Wireless home theatre system

Hi guys, I am a bit confused here and really need your help.
    BACKGROUND:
I am moving to a new house and looking to set up wireless audio system with 6 speakers - 2 in living room, one each in bathroom, kitchen, balcony and bedroom.
I have iPad, iPhone but their Airplay is restricted to a small range of expensive airplay speakers and I am looking for more flexibility in choosing and given distance restriction of Bluetooth, am looking at Wi-Fi wireless speakers to connect to my iPhone / iPad and listen wirelessly.
NOW THE HELP I NEED: I am looking to use my iPad/iPhone song library to wi-fi stream to these 6 wireless speakers and ability to select song as well as which speaker to use from iPhone / iPad itself. So, my guess is I need 6 wifi enabled speakers (of course), app in my apple device having the songs as well.
What else? Please help for end to end solution please.
Thanks a ton! God bless you!

I don't have any information about the construction method / type of your home. However, based on the information you supplied here is one "potential" solution which "might" prove to be fairly good.
You'd want a device such as the Airport Express.
You'd also want a wireless audio transmitter from Proficient Audio
This set-up, combined with 8Ohm speakers that you decide you want, will allow you to transmit wireless, digital quality, audio through-out your home (range issues naturally apply)
The system will sound quite good

  • ITunes -- Wireless -- Home Stereo

I have my entire (almost 600) CD collection in iTunes. I am presently playing from iTunes to my stereo via a Creative Labs XMod Wireless Music System. It works very well, but I have started to think about possibly including a higher quality DAC product. If I continue to use the Creative Labs product for its wireless interconnect, I am not sure how to work an external DAC into the configuration. Advice?

A point of clarity please ... '+powered speakers or a stereo+' (?) ... so in the second case the stereo receiver would be the front end 'powering' the speakers; in the first case 'powered speakers' would refer to speakers that obtained their own power from the household supply?
Correct. Yu could use battery powered speakers.
The Airport Express is not an amplifier. It puts out line level only.
Airport Express 3.5mm jack would need a 'splitter' - one side to each speaker?
No. It's a stereo connector. Get a 3.5mm stereo to a 3.5mm stereo cable or 3.5mm stereo to 2 phono plugs.

  • Putting music on home stereo system

I want to load my iPod with Christmas music and plug it into my tuner so the main speakers can play the music non-stop. A clerk in one of the major stores that sells iPods, music systems, tvs, etc. sold me a plug that has the same earphone plugs on each end. Didn't work.....is there a way to play my iPod on the main system? Thanks in advance. Janieg

  • Does anyone know how to connect an iMac to a home stereo system?

I want to play my itunes library through my home amplifier and speakers?  Is it possible to do this?

For stereo sound, you can use a normal stereo cable.
For surroundsound capable video/audio, optical TosLink connection through the headphone port using an adaptor cable.

  • ITunes and Wireless Home Stereo

Am I correct in my thinking ....
With an Airport Express I can have wireless 'sound' with any speaker set that has a mini jack?
    or get ...
A set of speakers that have their own onboard wireless receiver.
Just trying to get my head around how all this works. Thank you.

No. It's a stereo connector. Get a 3.5mm stereo to a 3.5mm stereo cable or 3.5mm stereo to 2 phono plugs.

  • Setting up a multi-zone stereo system in my home with Airport Express

I'm trying to set up an in-home stereo system using iTunes as my main hub.  I want to play iTunes as well as Pandora and possibly Sirius.  Can I set this up with Airport Express?  Would I control everything through iTunes on my MacBook or an iPad?  How is this all wired if I have some existing external speakers with a receiver in my family room, built-in ceiling speakers in the kitchen, and outdoor external speakers?  I am comparing this to a Sonos system, but the Sonos is not really in my budget.
Also, what is the difference between Airport Express and Airport Extreme?  What would I need for this situation?  Thanks in advance for your help.

    >I want to play iTunes as well as Pandora and possibly Sirius. Can I set this up with AirPort Express?
From iTunes you can stream a single audio source to one or multiple 802.11n AirPort Express Base Stations (AXn), but you cannot stream multiple audio sources to separate AXns. You would need a third-party product, like Rogue Amoeba's Airfoil to stream audio sources other than from iTunes.
    >Would I control everything through iTunes on my MacBook or an iPad?
    You could do either.
    >How is this all wired if I have some existing external speakers with a receiver in my family room, built-in ceiling speakers in the kitchen, and outdoor external speakers?
Of the speakers you mentioned, only the ones connected to the receiver would work directly connected to an AXn. The audio output port on the AXn is a combo 3.5 mm stereo analog/optical digital port. Assuming your receiver accepts either analog or digital audio input, you can feed the output of iTunes or Airfoil from the AXn to the receiver. In turn, the receiver (if configured for whole home stereo) can feed the kitchen and outdoor speakers.
    >Also, what is the difference between AirPort Express and AirPort Extreme?
What's similar: Both are Internet routers that provide wireless. Both provide the ability to share an attached USB printer. What's different: The Extreme has a built-in Ethernet switch. The Extreme supports sharing HDDs and printers together or separately via a USB hub. The Express has a built-in audio circuitry, the Extreme does not.
    >What would I need for this situation?
Only the Express can accomplish providing an audio stream.
