Wireless internet and streaming problem

I have bought an airport extreme several months ago. I must say I was happy in the beginning.
I am currently disapointed in the router. I have numerous times a loss of signal. This is particularly anoying whem using spotify.
I've tried router resets and both new and old firmware. I've upgraded both my iphone 4 s and ipad1 to the newest ios.
Nothing seems to tackle the problem. Does anyone have another idea?
Thanks Marcel

  • New MBP - wireless/internet access networking problem - a summary!

    Greetings!
New MBP here, with all the trimmings (MacOS X 10.4.10 - Safari 3 Beta). New also to the Apple/MAC world
MBP >> wireless networking into a Linksys WRT54G router and >> thru HughesNet DW7000 Satellite Internet connection (not the fastest, but hey, the US and especially rural areas are NOT S. Korea when it comes to speedy internet connections!
Frankly, I bought into it for two reasons: First, hearing about the vaunted Mac a/v/ and doc/photo editing capabilities,... and about MacOS stability, etc... Well, it all needs a little work still: on the part of new users like me, but also probably on the part of the Apple/Mac people as well. 2nd reason I decided to purchase the MBP - i.e. ability to run Windows (I have not yet tried BootCanp, etc...: still resolving preliminary issues!). I still live in a heavy Win environment at my business - no other way of course!
Communications issues seem to still prevail: I am hanging out at several VERY HELPFUL forums (AppleDiscussionForum, MacRumorsForums, etc...) and the same issues keep popping up. Im my case, same as all above reported, with a few additional points, as follows:
    1. Xmission errors: seem to be - at least in my case - a constant factor, regardless on how close/far i am from my wireless router. For example, I would be attempting to dwnload an upgrade (large)QT or MacOS file. i am barely into the dowmoad, and I already have several Read/Send errors. By the end of the download, I will have probably about 15 Rcv and 5 Send errors. Never gets quite that bad in my Win machines, I must mention. Anything to do here (I know, there are such things always affecting wireless com). AND, MOST importantly, how that this affect the effectiveness of the upgrade (I spotted same thing with MacOS 10.4.10 and Safari Beta 3 upgrade downloads!). Would it be likely that applying upgrades in such circumstances would screw up the OS??? Could OTOH such errors be automatically "compensated" by re-xmits from the source, and eventually the download would be OK? Because quite frankly, I do NOT know if my important upgrade download was OK to apply to the system, given those errors!!!
Also same thing with PING errors. Quite frequent when pinging another device on my network.
    2. Quite often, accessing a site will proceed somehow OK, and then things will get stuck twd the end, as if some buffer somewhere gets overloaded??? Of course, as elsewhere reported, same can often happen with com getting stuck right over the "www" part of the URL!
    3. AND, of course, the often reported "NO connection to the Internet", but computer shows good signal level and connection otherwise.
    4. Strangely enough, seems that the Airport Extreme wifi card sort of "warms up the the internet" as one proceeds to start using it. It eventually picks up on a network, and often "improves" its connection over time!
    5. Built in Airport Extreme seems to not exhibit up all immediately surrounding networks. Sensitivity issue?? iStumbler does.
    6. iStumbler permanently posts noise level of 9% regardless of how close to my wireless router/broadband modem I am. Anyone uses iStumbler to monitor network traffic?
This is getting longuish: I just want to get over all those p*ant issues and get into putting my a/v stuff together!!

Thanks for just reading all this!. I am not sure it is all fixable (back to the Win "features" terminology, really meaning "bugs"??)

Thanks, BDaqua. This support forum is quite well stocked: I have been perusing all its nooks and cranies!
On the www.dslreports.com - All things Mac - forum, I spotted a couple of mentions of the following type of infromation:
    link: »www.hardmac.com/news/2007-07-27/#7039
    - The first TechNote provides information concerning the Airport problem affecting the MBP Santa Rosa (but also other Mac Intel). When used on battery, the wireless connection drops and one can even experience kernel panic. Apple Centers are asked not to exchange affected notebook as this is due to a unidentified bug in the Atheros driver, and should be fixed in the future with a simple Airport system update. So for the moment, unfortunate users are asked to directly power their notebook when using wireless network, or using Ethernet connection when running on battery... in other words, turn your notebook into a desktop

I am wondering if you and folks on this close-to-Apple forum know anything about this. At least, we could just await remedy instead of messing around endlessly looking for solutions and... pondering as to whether it was a wise thing to purchase an expensive machine which happens to have trouble communicating online. After all, seems that the Mac folks are prone to spend MORE time online uploading/downloading music and videos instead of my being normally doing with the rest of my (Win) computers, i.e. work on customer lists, correspondence, inventories, accounting, data bases, etc....
So, seems to me we do have a pb and Apple might just save a few $$$ on silly ads and get to work on com instead. if nothing else to avoid the appearance of further - admittedly rather funny - ad-spoofs!
So back to your further inquiry. I run a wireless network from a HughesNet satellite modem, thru a Linksys WRT54GL wireless router, into some nearby office LANed desktops and point of sale equipment, to another neighbouring facility via wireless bridge, and to my Mac laptop. Distance from the laptop to the router: 50 ft max.
It all works surprizingly very well: up to 200kbps up and 1000 kbps down (in prime time, 150 up and 600 down). OK, my set up looks complex and incurring LOTS of activity. Actually, online activity is quite minimal and well scheduled - right now I am the only machine on the network online. Otherwise, our office processes online money wiring for customers among other things.
I'll try your DNS server choice on the Mac settings first. Will report accordingly.
    Thanks for everything!

  • AE setup for wireless router and streaming music

I'm attempting to setup my AE base station as a wireless router and use it to stream itunes through a home stereo. I'm using a new Dell Inspriron w/internal wireless card. It is detecting other wireless networks but not seeing the AE base station (which is flashing yellow even after resetting). Any input as to what I am missing?

    Hi.
I am accessing internet thru a wireless router, and it works great. Plugin AE (setup to run on the same network) and the internet gets so slow it ceases to function though I still have a valid IP. When AE is plugged in though, iTunes recognizes the speakers connected, but when I try to select them, it says 'connecting' and the program stops responding. Oh yeah, it's iTunes 5.
I've used my AE in hotels and shops where I've plugged it into an ethernet cable and the internet has worked automatically. I take it home and it stops. Try to play some music over it and it doesn't work either. What gives.
Anybody have any ideas? I'd love some help.
    thanks.

  • Windows 7 and Wireless Mighty Mouse, Wireless Keyboard and sound problem

    Hi,
I just installed Windows 7 x64 Ultimate on my iMac 24" white ( OS X Leopard 10.5 ). Surprisingly, it installed without any problems. The only problems I have now are the Wireless Mighty Mouse and the Wireless Keyboard ( alu ).
After I installed Windows I inserted the Leopard Instal DVD and installed Boot Camp. I got a message right away saying that: "This program has known compatibility issues...". I clicked Run program and continued. Soon I got the same warning, but this time not for Boot Camp, but Intel Chipset Device Software. I clicked Run program yet again and it continued installing. Then I got a different warning: "Service KeyAgent' failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services." I clicked Ignore and installation continued. I got another "Service Mac HAL' failed to start. Verify that you have sufficient privileges to start system services." warning, clicked Ignore again and after that it finished soon and I restarted the computer.
When I came back into Windows there was no Apple folder anywhere or any sign that I have just installed Boot Camp ( should there be? )
I installed Boot Camp Update 2.1 for Windows XP ( because Vista x64 version wouldn't start ) and basically I got the same warnings I did when I installed Boot Camp from the Leopard DVD ( described above ). I also tried to instal Boot Camp Update 2.2 for Windows, but it didn't start. I also downloaded Bluetooth Update 1.0, but all I got was a message saying: "This update is not intended for this computer and will not be installed.".
    There is also no sound.
This is basically it, I really hope some of you who run Windows 7 with wireless keyboards and mice can help me, because I desperately need this to work ( I use a Windows only program for school ).
PS. I have a 2007 iMac 24" white and while it is not on the we're-not-supporting-that list for the infamous Windows 7 Boot Camp update, all other iMacs from its generation are. Any ideas?

Found a solution for the "Boot Camp x64 is unsupported on this computer model" message. Here is the link: http://www.techulous.com/hardware/how-to-apple-boot-camp-64-bit-for-windows-7-on -unsupported-macs.html
Everything works ( for ) now. Yay!

  • Persistant Wireless dropout and other problems!

Had my macbook for about 2 years never had this problem before and cant think of any recent software updates that would have caused this - so...
Im having to regularly perform a fix so Im able to connect to the internet using airport. This occurs everytime i startup or even 30min+ into an internet connection. Sometimes it picks up my network in the toolbar at the top of the screen others it wont pick up any (including my neighbours)
    The temporary fix involves deleting the following and then rebooting;
    Library/preferences/SystemConfiguration/com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
after a reboot i can usually connect again. But it seems to be a very temporary fix.
FYI I connect to the internet through a netgear wireless router supplied by SKY. I dont know anything more technical then that. Although i do connect wirelessly at home on My PS3 and IPAD and Iphone so it seems like the problem is with my Macbook.
I can also connect on my Macbook using an Ethernet connection no problem so again I would assume a problem with airport.
    oh yeah..... HELP please.

i have the same problem, and have used both the sky router as well as my own, ethernet is fine as is when i have it connected to the mains. did you manage to find a fix?

  • TC as a wireless router and backup problem. HELP!!!

    Hello all.
    1. Im trying to wirelessly connect my TC to the basement wireless router I have. Im doing this so I can leave my TC upstairs and just connect my laptops to that for a better signal. Only problem is I have been trying for the past couple hours and still can find no way of doing this without using ethernet cables that connect to the TC, that way i'll get internet connection, without the ethernet cable I have no internet connection. So my question is how can I leave my TC upstairs and be connected wirelessly to the router downstairs?
    2. If that is not a option how can I use the TC as a external harddrive? Would I have to connect a USB to it since it wont work wirelessly?

Apple routers can only wirelessly extend other apple routers. if the router in your basement is another brand it won't work.

You cannot use the TC by USB. it is a network drive.. you need to connect to it by ethernet or wireless.
Either run ethernet .. yes, I see that is what you don't want to do.. or use EOP (homeplug) adapters to connect the two.. homeplug just like wireless is not always going to work.. ethernet always works.

  • How to connect a wireless drive and stream to my stereo through MacBook. I currently have a non apple WiFi network

I currently have a PC based WiFi network and am about to buy a MacBook Pro. I have 250 gb iTunes library and 100+ gb of photos. What I was going to get is the 120gb MacBook and run an external drive to store the iTunes library and photos. For intensive photographic work I'd directly connect the drive but day to day I'd connect it to the wireless network. What I want to do is to stream my music, from the wireless drive to my stereo
Will the drive work this way on my existing router - usb2 connected? Or do I need an apple device.  Should I use an airport or Apple TV to connect to the stereo?
I also want to have the option of streaming from my iPhone.

Hard to say when you don't give us a clue what you current router is??
USB2 is slow.. it is double slow from a network device.. and even slower if that network device doesn't actually have too much CPU power or RAM..
Even worse is the idea to move the disk from the network to the local external port.. because then format comes into play.. Apple devices can use FAT32.. yuk.. but really want HFS+.. most routers cannot talk HFS+ except apple ones.. they want NTFS or FAT32.. You can see where this is going.. buy two disks.. one for library.. one for a scratch disk .. usb3 will be great.. or thunderbolt even better. And when finished copy your project to the network drive..
Think carefully about backups.. they are important too.. might be time to invest in a real NAS. Not toy systems with USB.. dangling off them.

  • Wireless router and bridge problems

I am having some difficulties with this setup and I am not sure what the problem is.
I am using a Linksys Wireless G router and I am also using a Linksys Wireless N Ethernet bridge.
Here is what I want to do with this setup:
I want to be able to connect the bridge to my DLink 5 port desktop switch.
I can connect the bridge directly to my desktop PC and it works with no problem, but when the bridge is connect to the desktop switch my PC cannot get an IP. All equiptment is pretty much brand new (the bridge and switch are less than 6 months old and the router I just bought last month).
I know that this setup is possible because I have used this configuration at work before with no issues. The only thing I haven't tried is to use a crossover cable for the bridge>switch. But I didn't think that was needed.
    Anyone have any ideas?

Sorry I already tried different ports and even several different network cables and still get the same results.
    An IP of 169.254.x.x
I will try a different switch and post the results later tonight.
Yeah, I thought it would be as simple as configuring the bridge and hooking it up to the switch, but has turned into serious fustration. Especially since I have gotten this setup to work in the past.

I guess one day firefox will give error message and will disconnect internet. it is since 12 of Oct 2010. Since all trials failed I started with reinstalling but problem did not go away. What can I do to use Firefox. I am not sure of ID and Password.

You can find the password and the sync key in the password manager on the computer where you originally created that sync account.<br />
    Look for:
    * chrome://weave (Mozilla Services Password)
    * chrome://weave (Mozilla Services Encryption Passphrase)

  • Internet and usb problems

HelloI just bought a cb3-111 afew days ago, it worked great when I first brought it home but now a couple of problems have come to light.first of all i keep loosing internet connection, the wifi signal is full bars but it will just randomly loose internet even though the wifi is still connected and strong. Second, the usb ports connect and disconnect. Example, if I plug my phone into the usb port to charge it will connect then disconnect sometimes it will stay on for a while then disconnect and reconnect on its own. the same thing seems to happen with my thumb drive. I would greatly appreciate any help to resolve these problems

    morb,
Check and make sure that you are using the most current build for your Chromebook. You can also try to run a powerwash on it to see if that fixes it.

  • Can I set up wireless internet and a wireless printer at the same time?

I have an AirPort Express configured already which allows wireless access to the internet (as it is connected to my broadband router) but can I also configure it to allow wireless printer sharing at the same time?
I would appreciate an answer on this as I have been unable to determine it so far.
    Many thanks

The Express has a single Ethernet port, whereas, the Extreme has four would be one of most distinguishing feature differences. Obviously size differences would be #1. (ref: Identifying AirPort Hardware)
When connected directly another router, you have (effectively) two routers in series. In this configuration, the AirPort Express would need to be reconfigured as a bridge. This will allow the broadband router to provide both NAT & DHCP services for all the wired/wireless clients connected to either router.

    Hi:
According to the hardware ID you posted (USB\VID_0CF3&PID_311D&REV_0001), that decodes to an Atheros bluetooth radio.

  • Xperia SP - Internet and crashes & problems all round

Will not connect to a computer no matter what I try (different computers/cables); crashes all the time whilst using apps, texting or answering a call; freezes and turns itself off when trying to unlock it - anyone else experiencing this or has and has fixed the issues?? Any advice is gratefully recieved

I suggest that you try to repair the phone software using PC Companion. The phone should be turned off during this procedure so it might work even if the computer doesn't recognize the phone right now.
Before repairing your device you may want to backup your information first. Check out this topic for more information on how to.
    How to backup?
If the issue should still remain I think that this needs to be examined and fixed at a repair center. For more information about how to submit your phone for repair and where, contact your local support team.

  • Connecting to multiple Airport Express base stations for internet and TV?

I want to be able to use wireless internet and stream music to my stereo at the same time, but I only have a single ethernet connection behind my stereo and it's connected to the Pay TV. My options seem to be an ethernet splitter (maybe - any ideas?), getting a new ethernet connection installed behind the stereo so I can insert this into the same Airport Express base station I use for my music, or buying a second Airport Express base station and connecting it to one of the other internet connections in the room, then connecting to both Airport Express base stations at the same time.
Is this possible? Are there other alternatives?
    Many thanks

Nate, Welcome to the discussion area!
Once you have a network, you can connect multiple AirPort Express (AX) to that network (wirelessly or via Ethernet). When your computer joins that network it can access all the AX.
You could take your current internet connection and run it into an inexpensive router with multiple Ethernet ports (not the AX). If this is a wireless router then your AXs could be located elsewhere and connect as wireless clients to that network. Once you computer joined that network it could stream music to the AXs.

  • Software Installer and wireless internet problems after upgrade from Leopard to Lion.

Last weekend I upgraded the OS on my MacBook Pro from Leopard to Snow Leopard, and then from Snow Leopard to Lion. I'm having a couple of problems.
First, I cannot get the wireless internet to work. My internet connection is fine, I can plug the ethernet cord in and all is well. But I cannot get wireless signals to work. Have tried both my Airport Express and an old linksys router, and neither seem to work. They both worked just fine before the update. I had very fast wireless internet, and now nothing.  With the Airport Express, when I plug it in iti'll just continuously blink orange, and the Airport Utility refuses to recognize it. The linksys router seems to work, because it puts off a signal and my iPhone connects to it. My computer recognizes the signal, but it won't open any internet pages, says I'm not connected.
Today I tried to install Apple's Migration Assistant software to help with my first problem.  But a funny thing happened.  The software installer says I don't have enough space. But I have plenty- I have almost 200 GB, and I only need 5 MB for the program.  I've never seen this happen before, it's so odd.  Any suggestions?
    I really appreciate any assistance/suggestions!
    Thanks,
    Ellen

You can't purchase Snow Leopard from the Mac App Store.  Or "download" it.  That will be possible for Lion.
For the Apple Online store, why can't you just look for yourself?
