Wireless internet broken by last Airport software update

Systems: 800MHz 17" iLamp with Airport card and a 933MHz G3 iBook with an Airport card, both machines running 10.3.9, and an Asante FR1104-G wireless router. I've had a wireless connection using 128-bit WEP security for months with no problems. But since Software Update pushed an Airport update, the wireless connection doesn't work.
Symptoms:
*At restart the system has forgotten the previously selected network.
*When I manually reselect the network, it shows connected with strong signal in the menubar status icon.
*In Network preferences, it says "AirPort is connected to the network [my network]. AirPort does not have an IP address and cannot connect to the Internet". Nothing I can figure out can persuade it to get an IP (the router is using DHCP).
*When I open Internet Connect, it goes into the infinite beachball. I have let it sit for upwards of 10 minutes and it never finishes loading.
*Every so often, during system shutdown I get a dialog from Keychain saying that Airport has updated and wants access to my network password key. I click "Always allow".
*The first time this happened, I was able to get the wireless connection back by shutting down the computer, making a wired connection to the router, and restarting. When the machine came back up, both connections were active and had an IP.
*I just had to restart after downloading the new QuickTime and iTunes updates, and now the wireless connection is completely dead and my previous method to restore it doesn't work.
*I've done the obvious: repaired permissions, tried tossing the internet connect and airport prefs files.
Any ideas?

Your optimistic projections notwithstanding, I am currently about two-thirds of the way through recovery from this disaster. My first attempt to upgrade from 10.2 to 10.3 failed (I must not have been clear that I do not have a full retail set of 10.3 disks, only the upgrade.) I was forced to do a clean install and then the upgrade took, and then of course multiple passes through Software Update until finally it offered me Airport 4.2 (NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!) And now, when my backup of my backup is complete, I will attempt to restore my users, settings, &c. If things go well I hope to be fully up and running sometime tomorrow morning. In between all that was a trip to my local Genius Bar, where the Genius I saw could only have been less helpful if he had attacked my computer - or me - with a claw hammer.
I know, this isn't the place to rant about how Apple should never have let such an egregiously broken update get out the door - but I'm going to anyway. How could this happen? And having happened, how could they not notify us of the problem - say, with a big flashing light on the Apple home page - and give us an ETA for a fix? ("I think it would be more appropriate if the box bore a large red label: WARNING, Lark's Vomit!") This is the kind of behavior I expect from Microsoft. From this insanely great company, I expect better.
Suffice it to say, today I am not Apple's friend.

  • Have installed the latest Airport software update.  Still no wireless

I was hoping that Apple would fix the can not connect to wireless problem, I installed the latest airport software update but still have the same problem. 10.4 works great but 10.5 will not connect.

Mine is a long and sad story. I have ComCast cable connected from their modem to an Asanti 4 port router. Connections around our little office area are by ethernet. I then have one router port connected to an Apple snow airport. Out of the office area we use the wireless LAN. All of our PC laptops, our PC desk top and our MacBook Pro (running 10.4) will connect through the snow airport LAN when need-be. All of the aforementioned computers will connect to our city-wide free wireless network, Metro-fi Free. Everything works perfectly except my FW800 running 10.5. For now nothing is incripted. If I turn on my airport card I can see available 6 neighborhood wireless LANs, Metro-fi and the snow base station. I installed 10.4 in a separate HD and booted up. It connects perfectly which means my computer and airport card must be OK. The problem is in 10.5 for sure. I tried to check the update you are supposed to see when opening the airport utility but of course the utility says it can find no AirPort base station. I have reinstalled 10.5, run Diskwarrior and TechTool Pro and found no problems. If I did not have such a bunch of stuff in my system HD I would go back to 10.4. What have I overlooked??

  • Ever since I received my Macbook Pro in July 2011 I've had issues with my wireless connection at home.  After software updates, Apple support suggested I reboot my router which works.  But now I have to do it every other day.  ????

Ever since I received my Macbook Pro in July 2011 I've had issues with my wireless connection at home.  After software updates, Apple support suggested I reboot my router which works.  But now I have to do it every other day.  ????  AT&T my DSL carrier suggests I get a new router.  Apparently the one I have is really old and doesn't support my Macbook Pro.  Does this sound right?

If your using WEP encryption yes, Apple has discontinued that becaues it's worthless. WEP (and WPA) is cracked so encryption makes no sense.
Get a new Wireless N router, set it up with WPA2 (AES) Personal and two different 20+ randon letter/numbersymbol character passwords
One for Admin access only of the router, keep this on paper off all comptuers in a safe someplace.
One for entering into devices, computers etc for Internet Access Only.
You need the long and random password to defeat brute force attacks by GPU software that the hackers have now.
Also if you give out the password to another, they can't hack the network with the guest access password.
Computers remember the internet password, so anyone with access to your machines or network will have the password.
Since you have another Admin only password, they can't hack in. got it?
You don't need "Invisible" or "MAC Address filtering" that's a waste of time as hackers can sniff a network and causes issues getting on the network.
    Good luck.

  • Okay since last apple software update my safari will not open youtube, yahoo or google

Okay since last apple software update my safari will not open youtube, yahoo or google, an error message comes up saying safari cannot connect to the server.  Can anyone help me with this please?

    Hi Joshua ..
Check to see if Safari is running in 32 bit mode. Right or control click the Safari icon in your Applications folder then click Get Info. If the box next to:  Open in 32 bit mode  is selected, deselect, quit then relaunch Safari to test.
If that wasn't the issue, try using OpenDNS.
Use OpenDNS for better speed, more security, prevents the, "can't connect to server" issue, includes anti phishing filters, prevents browser re directs, and it's free.
Open System Preferences / Preferences then select the Network tab. Click the Advanced tab then click the DNS tab.
    Click +
Enter these addresses exactly as you see them here.
    208.67.222.222
    Click +
    208.67.220.220
    Then click OK.
    More about OpenDNS here.

  • Issues with 2007-004 AirPort Software Update

Hello - I saw some threads around this re: other updates.. however, I have a MacBook Pro 15.4" with version 10.4.10. This weekend, Auto Software Updates updated the Mac OS with the 2007-004 AirPort patch. Prior to this, I had perfect 801.11NG connectivity with my router (D-Link DIR-655 N-Extreme) - all 4 bars lit up no matter where I was in the house. However, since this patch, my connectivity has become very flaky. Sometimes I'll have strong connectivity for a few hours, then it will suddenly drop (will go from 4 bars to 3 - then will have performance drag on my applications or drop completly).
I notice while watching my router statistics page that throughput drops from 50-60mb down to 11 when it drops.
We have an iMac in the house which is NOT experiencing this issue (it is on 2007-003). I also have 2 Apple-Tv's, neither of which are having this issue either.
This is extremely frusterating - as not having stable wireless on a laptop is very painful. I've noticed threads where this patch was suppose to fix this problem for people who had 2007-003 patch. For me, it has caused the reverse.
Any recommendations or thoughts? I'd like to roll-back to 2007-003, but it's not clear how to do this - but if I could, I could at least isolate it to the patch, and not some other coincidence.
    Thanks, Ed

The light sometimes remains on, even if i lock the keypad. Beside this, i noticed take my battery lasts like 1 hour while the light is on. This happens few times, but is really annoying.. Also, i now that the theme effects are not essential, but i want to keep my phone fully functional, so i'd like to know what's this issue about..
@metalfan I didn't expected a quick answer, i was only preoccupied for these problems
How can i to restore the original firmware?
I tried to remove my sim(also i don't use a memory card), but nothing changes...

  • TV no longer connects to wireless internet after installation of Airport Time Capsule

TV no longer connects to wireless Wi-Fi internet after installation of AirPort Time Capsule.

I am having a similar problem with a new TIme Capsule. The wifi on the Time Capsule was working fine for months with all devices, iPhone 4s, iPad Air, iMac Air, Mac mini, and vizio smart TVs.  After a recent software update the Time capsule wifi no longer connects to the smart tvs or the iPhones. It still connects to the mac mini, iPad and iMac Air. I do NOT think the software update timing was just coincidental. But I have not found any information or other users confirming a similar problem on the Apple support site.

  • Slow wireless internet connection after 10.6.4 update

After the initial excitement switching from windows to mac, I'm now having a problem I can't figure out. This problem is mentioned many times in several forums, but I'am unable to find the proper solution.
After unpacking my new MacBook air last week everything worked simple, smooth an correct. Then an automatic update to OS X 10.6.4 was downloaded and installed. I'm having troubles with my wireless internet.
Airport seems to be functioning ok but most sites take ages to load. There's also problems with loading pictures, movies, dynamic contents, etc. Some sites function partially on Firefox, Safari seems to be hanging al the time.
Resetting router, starting MBA in safe mode didn't have any effect. On the ethernet connection the mac and internet is working as a dream. Other windows device also function normally. How do I get my wireless internet working properly??
    Help!

I had exactly the same problem after updating my mac to 10.6.4. I did the usual and trawled the net but could not find a decent fix. It became very very frustrating so in the end I rang apple and luckily I spoke to a technician who had exactly the same problem with his machine. He explained it doesn't effect every mac for reasons I wont go into here but in order to fix this problem 100% guaranteed, you need to do a reformat and a reinstall. This should be done periodically anyway to keep your machine running in tip top condition. I wasn't happy to have to do it but in the end I'm glad I did.
For those who have not done this before see instructions below.
    1. Back up your disk with time machine to an external HD
    2. Boot from installation disk (holding down C)
    3. After choosing english language select utilities from menu bar and select disk utilities.
    4. Select your mac hard drive, erase, and in security options select "zero out disk" and erase.
    5. Reinstall operating system with installation disk, when done update to 10.6.4 assuming that was the system you had installed when you backed up.
    6. Reboot again holding C with installation disk, select utilities then restore option, choose your time machine backup and away you go. FIXED!
It takes a while but you will probably spend just as much time hunting the net for fixes that just wont work and anyway you end up with a clean install that will probably fix other little bugs you were unaware of.

  • Wireless sharing disabled upon wake after software update

I have been sharing my network connection from my ethernet-connected Core 2 Duo iMac through my Airport card and it was working fine until I did the software update last week. Now, I have to restart the sharing through "Create Network..." from the Airport pull-down menu bar every time my iMac wakes. Plus, I have to retype the password. This is really annoying - any ideas if the SU broke this? I have not installed anything else and it began after the update.
    Thanks,
    Tony

A follow-up to my first message. I've just noticed that when my Mac awakes, there is about a 10 second delay before I can use Safari and download email from my POP server. If I try sooner, I get the "You are not connected to the Internet" message in Safari.
If no one else is experiencing such problems, I wonder if our IT department has done something without telling me.

  • WEP problem after Airport software update

I just updated the Airport software on my powerbook with the consequence that my Powerbook failed to connect to my home network, untill I changed it from WEP to WAP2.
Strange think, as it was the other way round before the update. I did reenter the WEP password and went through any possible option: nothing.

Welcome to the forums, wish it were under better conditions.
Your best bet for repairing you HD is DiskWarrior from Alsoft...
    http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/
If that shouldn't work, your best bet for recovering your data is Data Rescue II...
    http://www.prosofteng.com/products/data_rescue.php
This last one would require another HD with plenty of space to recover to.
Unfortunately, Disk Utility can't fix all that much, and the only other Apple Options are erasing the HD, or installing OSX to a second drive, then using Migration Assistant to move stuff over to the new HD.

  • Has anyone else had optical sound output problems since the last Apple software update?

I have just read an article about this problem and it seems that there is an issue with the last software update from Apple which has caused problems with the optical sound driver.
My optical output stopped working a couple of weeks back which would probably coincide with the last update that was installed. Still have a red light at the end of the cable but no sound is transmitted.

    here's a thread with a possible solution.
    https://community.verizonwireless.com/thread/790883
if clearing the system cache doesn't work, a factory reset should (just back up anything you don't want to lose).

  • Living in Africa, internet not strong enough for software update

    Greetings Apple,
I'm living in Mozambique right now and finding it very difficult to update the Apple updates. The internet that I am able to access is about as good as it gets here in this country. I'm going to have to find a way to do it and hope you will offer some suggestions.
    Here is what happens:
When I go to the usual apple menu drop-down and select software update, it goes through the initial process, then begins the download, with the box: "downloading 2 items - downloading Mac OSX Update Combined . . . 1.37 GB of 1.06 GB - About 5 seconds"
but, part way through, something goes amiss (probably the Mozambican internet is interrupted as it usually is) and I never even get to the place where I can then install them. I consistently get a message box that says: "The update 'Mac OS X Update Combined can't be saved. Software Update can't connect to the update server. Make sure you're connected to the internet, and then try again.'"
Is there a way that I can go to the apple website, get the list of what is included in the upgrades, and then download them one at a time? That would help those of us living in less-than-ideal internet situations.
    thanks for your assistance!
    Autumn

    Thanks for your reply.
I have also been doing this that you suggest.
I have gone to the Mac OSX v10.6.6 Update Combo page
and been trying over and over to download it, but am not able to. Also tried the Mac OSX v10.6.6 update (not combo). It downloaded 55.1 of 144 MB quite well, then stopped downloading, even though the internet connection was fine, and didn't go anywhere. This problem has been happening consistently for me.
I have gone to the download site and individually downloaded the following:
    I did iTunes 10
    I did Safari 5.0.3
    what else am I missing?
    Thanks again,
    Autumn

  • Error message 1053 following last Apple software update.  Unable to access/re-install iTunes.

Is anybody else finding a problem with the last software update?  I have tried the following several times:
Uninstalled all Apple components from PC including iCloud
    Cleared out cache
    Reinstalled iTunes
Each time the reinstall tries to load Services, the installation fails.  I access the Apple Mobile Device Service via Adminstrative tools and attempt to 'start' the device but this won't work and I get the following error message:
"Windows could not start Apple Mobile Device Service service on Local Computer.
Error 1053:  The service did not respond to the start or control request in timely fashion"
If anyone has any workaround for this I would be very pleased for your advice.
    Many thanks

I found this link to the Apple site:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1784?viewlocale=en_US - iTunes 12.1 for Windows (64-bit - for older video cards)
I feel your pain - was losing the will with this and spent ages googling possible fixes.  This worked immediately but it is just possible that Apple fixed whatever the bug was and my success was coincidental - who knows?!
Best of luck and enjoy your new phone.

Is there any way to setup up my camera on my network? All my computer at home are all Macs. Please help. Mahalo (Thank You)!

Thanks for answering and letting me know that. Linksys should let their sellers know that. I asked them if it'll work with Mac and they answer was yes, all you need is a browser. Thanks for letting me know.
