Wireless Internet Lags with Spinning Color Wheel, but only on My MBP

I've noticed for the past 2 weeks or so my internet connection has been really laggy and it takes forever to do anything. If I click on something, the spinning color wheel shows up. If I scroll up or down the page, the spinning color wheel shows up. I've tried clearing cache and it'll speed things back to normal for a few hours, but it'll go back to being really slow.
Right now the spinning color wheel isn't showing up, but it might as well be cause the wait time is the same. It'll take roughly 5-10 seconds to scroll.
I'm using Firefox as my Internet browser if that makes any difference. When I check the Activity Monitor, the %CPU for it ranges from 14.9 to 76.9 to 105.7. That's the only thing with more than 1%CPU? As for System Memory, I have:
FREE: 287.6 MB, WIRED: 764.4 MB, ACTIVE: 2.11 GB, INACTIVE: 885.8 MB, USED: 3.73 GB (the numbers keep changing though)
The other laptops using the same wireless connection don't have the same problem however. One's a Windows Vista machine while the other is also a MacBook Pro (though one year newer than mine).
Does anyone have any idea what might be affecting this and how I can fix this? Thanks in advance for any help!

Clone the system to the SSD (250GB $120 EVO 850 Samsung) using CCC -
http://www.bombich.com
Might be a good time though to do a clean install and then use Setup Assistant
No maintenance?
Always have a couple bootable system drives, one for maintenance, one from last month or just prior to when you last made changes to the system.
Take a look in Activity Monitor for pageouts, disk usage, and what is running
And start TimeMachine backup routine,
Copy your data to a new 2TB drive like WD Black ~$120 also
Leave the old drive as is for now, later you can erase and try using for a backup

  • Trouble with spinning color wheel

Still having the same issues with the spinning color wheel. Took my computer into Apple; seemed to "fix" it but as soon as I brought it back home and started using it again the same issue with the color wheel constantly spinning.  Has ANYONE had success with fixing this problem?!!! I've tried everything suggested and like I said, took it into Apple and that hasn't helped.

  • MacBook Pro with spinning Color Wheel - and Java?

My MacBook Pro has recently developed a spinning color wheel when it's "thinking". At the same time, my system seems slower now.  I have more than 60% storage still available.  Not sure if that has anything to do with it.  I live in a rather large town and have Comcast Xfinity which is satisfactory and has never gone out.
My other question is regarding JAVA.  Is it necessary?  What's it for?  I constantly get messages that Java need updating …is this something I can remove?  If so, how do I do this safely and completely?
    Thank you!
    Donna

  • Large online photo files cause slow Mac with spinning color wheel

My Mac Mini has been gradually getting slower to launch apps, any app, and now usually includes 15-30 seconds of spinning color wheel. Sometimes I get the wheel and delays while browsing. Finder windows populate slowly with file icons/names.
This behavior seems to have started, and gradually increased, since upgrading to 10.6 about 8 months ago but it also seems to be related to viewing large photo files online, since Snow Leopard.
One repeatable problem is viewing a large 2 or 3mb photo file online. I notice in Activity Monitor that Safari (both 4 and now 5 at 64bit) will dramatically increase the Real and Virtual Memory used, and not decrease even after the browser window is closed. In a few minutes the User CPU % will max out (at about 75% while System uses 25%) and the Mac while freeze for several minutes (Safari not responding) until CPU usage goes back to normal, but the Mac will be so sluggish then that I have to restart. I usually Force Quit Safari.
I have Repaired Permissions (1000s of Airport Utility were repaired but the JavaVM permissions report fixed but are on the list of repairs again a few minutes later) with Disk Utility and Cocktail, scanned with VirusBarrier X6, monitored network connections for months using Little Snitch and usually leave open Activity Monitor for checking out the action. I have read a lot of support docs and forums but I can't find the problem.
Any idea how to rid myself of this bizarre behavior?

  • Long Unresponsive Delay with Spinning Color Wheel After Compressor Launches

    I'm running FCS3 with Compressor 3.5.
After I launch Compressor, there is a 1-2 minute delay before it will respond to my mouse clicks. The Choose a template window will finally appear after the long delay and then Compressor is responsive to user input.
The reason why this is happening is because I have six (6), yes 6, external optical DVD and Blu-ray burner drives connected to my Mac Pro through a combination of FireWire and USB. When I turn them all off, the delay and unresponsiveness in Compressor is significantly shorter (about 6 seconds). Compressor tries to scan for all your optical drives upon program startup, and this can take a long time if you have many optical drives connected. This issue does not exist in Compressor 3.
This is just a tip for anyone else out there who may have several optical drives connected to your Mac. If you only have one or two optical drives, then you may only see a 6 second delay with the spinning color wheel after Compressor starts up, which is bearable.

Again, this is just a tip. If you want to avoid long delays after starting up Compressor, then disconnect or turn off any external optical burning drives you may have connected.

  • I'm getting the spinning color wheel only on FCP

I'm getting the spinning colour wheel but only on FCP & not Logic or iMovie.

What version is your copy of FCP X and what OS? What year is your MBP?
When do you get the lag (what are you doing when it happens)? Does it hang so you have to force quit?
Does it happen regardless of what library you open?

I tried to download some photos from a corrupted CD and now every time I try to open iPhoto the frame pops up but nothing will load.  I just get the spinning color wheel.  Any ideas???

What version of iPhoto? Assuming 09 or later:
    Option 1
Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Rebuild iPhoto Library Database from automatic backup.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .

  • IMovie project freezes with continuous spinning color wheel

I'm using iMovie 8.0.4. I have been working on a large (3hr) movie project and the last time I tried adding a voiceover, the project froze and the spinning color wheel remains continuously for hours. I had to force quit, and after rebooting and restarting several time, the same thing happens when I try to open this project. I have since tried deleting the preferences file and resetting permissions without success. The program opens OK and I can get some of my other projects to open, but every time I try to open my large project, the color wheel starts spinning. I had made a backup copy of my project file before adding the voiceover, and the same thing happens even if I try to open this old version. Any suggestions on how to fix this project file would be very welcomed.

I have been having almost exactly the same problem with iMovie 8.05, but unfortunately, none of the suggested remedies have helped. Does anyone have a solution to this frustrating dilemma?

  • Why does spinning color wheel keep pausing  internet connection?

why do I keep getting the spinning color wheel ... it keeps pausing internet connection??

Hello, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts?

  • When I am in e-mail. I get the spinning color wheel. Then, when I check the activity montior, it notes high cpu usage (99%) for "Safari web content.". then I quit this process and cpu usage drops way done. but I have to log in again to my e-mail. what can

When I am in e-mail, I sometimes get the spinning color wheel, which lock up everything. when it doesn't go away, I see on the activity monitor, that CPU usage is very high (99%), for a process calles " Safari web content'. When I click on the proccess and quite, the CPUusage goes way down. Problem is that I have to then log back in to e-mail. What can I do to eliminate this proble.  thanks

How much FREE RAM do you have when this occurs. It's easy to tell, when it beach balls open Activity Monitor (Applications - Utilities - Activity Monitor) click the System Memory tab and note how much FREE RAM is listed. If it's 500MB or less it's time for a RAM upgrade.

  • Spinning color wheel of death

every time i try to open the mail i get the scwd. how do i solve this problem? right now i have to go thru my .mac acct to get my mail. very annoying.

Yesterday, whilst trying to solve a problem with mail - which attachments sporadically and automagically become embedded BASE64 files I rebuilt my IMAP inbox - All worked well for about two minutes. Then the real problems began. Mail would present me the Spinning Colored Wheel of Death. Then consume my CPU to 95% and Not Respond. Interestingly enough - I was still able to receive mail. Just not able to respond.
For the next few hours I scoured the forums. Reviewed the data collection bits and tried all of the solutions - none worked. I even tried to remove everything and start afresh but alas there are still some mail parameters lurking somewhere that seemed to keep ensuring the problem resurface.
I even tried to repair my drive but could not - because the repair option was grayed out. Was able to verify, fix permissions and all of the other activities instead of sleep.
I moved copies of Mail folders to the desktop - restarted. Nope. I moved my Preferences -> com.apple.mail.plist file - re-entered all of the information anew.Nope. Removed partial.emix files. Nope.
All in all it appears that there are many with problems and no real straight forward troubleshooting - a lot of "try this" and "try that" approach.
I would think that for a product that has numerous parameters and characteristics, there would be a better troubleshooting methodology.
Finally I fixed the problem ...
I went to http://www.mozilla.com/thunderbird/ downloaded and installed Thunderbird - I am now back up and running.
I guess to be proficient I need to really understand the architecture of Mac Mail. I'll let the problem vet it self out to those that have the time and revisit at a later date - maybe. Until then TB 1.5 will enable me to get work done - and get some sleep

  • When I open iphoto, I only get the spinning color wheel

When I open iphoto, the window is blank and I just get the spinning color wheel.  I have OSX 10.6.8.  The last time I used iphoto I had deleted over 100GB of photos (they were backed up to an external hard drive). Now I just get the spinning wheel.  I have to force quit to shut it down.

Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one. .
