Wireless internet--what do i need?

I just bought a 14 inch iBook g4. It says it has built in AirPort extreme. But I have no idea how to use it, really, and can't find an explanation anywhere. Do I need to buy a base station? All I have is the computer. What do I need in order to connect to the internet at a local coffee shop, which has free Wi-Fi? Do I need any extra equipment? Do I have to fill in information about service providers and things? Also, what if I want wireless in my home, which obviously does not have free WiFi? What do I need to do then? Maybe this has already been asked, but I have searched and there is no clear how-to about how I get this set up. Please help!

Here are your options:
1)Go to a coffee shop (Starbucks) and pay for internet service from there.
2)You can buy an Airport Base Station (Airport Express/ http://www.apple.com/airportextremeAirport Extreme). They will both work with your card
a. You will need a service provider. Comcast, MSN, Earth Link, etc. EarthLink and Apple have a pretty good package. You should get your local phonebook and look for service providers.
b. Follow directions on Airport Base Station/Service provider and your done

I'm not sure what your question has to do with networking on the AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme, or Time Capsule....but if you buy an AirPrint compatible printer, it will work with the iPad2.

I want to buy a new MacBook -- does it come with a wireless card or do i need to order it separately? I don't see any info on the spec sheet saying it has one.

Any new MacBook or MacBook Pro series laptop will come equipped with an Apple Airport Controller capable of supporting a connection to any standard 802.11 a/b/g/n wireless network.
Additionally, the integrated Apple Airport software supports all popular encryption policies used by wireless networks including WEP, WPA, and WPA2.
Basically what that means is you will be able to connect not only to your home network but also to any wireless access points you come across (that are either open or that you have access to) without any problems.

WVRS4400N wireless router - What do i need to configure for VPN software to work?

Hi,
My VPN software can't establish connection ever since i changed to the WVRS4400N router. What do i need to configure inorder to establish a VPN connection to the outside network?
On a side note, i am not sure if i am on the right track but i read a little bit about setting IPSec Pass-Through. If this is the case, do i really need to get all the remote connection information inorder for my VPN software to work? And under Key Management setting, what would my pre-shared key use for (assuming this is a key i generated)?
Better yet, how can i get the vpn software to work with only having access to the internet without going through alot of hassle???

If i am not mistaken, i believe what you are suggesting is setting up a VPN connection to my local area network and use the bundled Quick VPN client software to connect.
I currently have Sentinel VPN software on my laptop and it is configured to have access to my work's network. In most cases, i am able to connect to work without a problem as long as i have internet connection. Apparently, my vpn doesn't work when i am running it behind the WVRS4400N router. This problem didn't occur with my previous router. I believe the WVRS4400N router is blocking the connection by default. What can i do or configure to resolve this?

You will need a wireless router, the 5300r will not work in ad-hoc mode and you need a wireless router to work in infrastructure mode.

Please tell me that it has NEVER been jailbroke. If that's the case, here are some standard repair procedures. Hopefully there is no hardware failure.
First, try a system reset. It cures many ills and it's quick, easy and harmless...
Hold down the on/off switch and the Home button simultaneously until you see the Apple logo. Ignore the "Slide to power off" text if it appears. You will not lose any apps, data, music, movies, settings, etc.
If the Reset doesn't work, try a Restore. Note that it's nowhere near as quick as a Reset. It could take well over an hour! Connect via cable to the computer that you use for sync. From iTunes, select the iPad/iPod and then select the Summary tab. Follow the on-screen directions for Restore and be sure to say "yes" to the backup. You will be warned that all data (apps, music, movies, etc.) will be erased but, as the Restore finishes, you will be asked if you wish the contents of the backup to be copied to the iPad/iPod. Again, say "yes."
At the end of the basic Restore, you will be asked if you wish to sync the iPad/iPod. As before, say "yes." Note that that sync selection will disappear and the Restore will end if you do not respond within a reasonable time. If that happens, only the apps that are part of the IOS will appear on your device. Corrective action is simple - choose manual "Sync" from the bottom right of iTunes.
If you're unable to do the Restore (or it doesn't help), go into Recovery Mode per the instructions here. You WILL lose all of your data (game scores, etc,) but, for the most part, you can redownload apps and music without being charged again. Also, if you have IOS-7, read this.

i am new to mac. im planning on switching by purchasing a MacBook Pro for my freshmen year in college.
i was just wondering if the MacBook Pro already has the equipment i need to have wireless Internet. what do i need to purchase along with my MacBook to have wireless Internet? i read about AirPorts but i don't understand it. i need to buy something separate to have wireless Internet?
also i am new to wireless Internet. i have dsl and my friends told me all i need to do is a wireless router. can someone shed some light on that area as well.

When you go up to your Airport signal menu, located on your menu bar on the right side, it will list the available hotspots that are within wireless range. Some indeed are free. Select it, go to your browser and you are good to go. Some DO require subscription to access. Generally what happens with these is that you select the network, and then your browser will take you to a registraton page. You can then pick an access plan and pay with a credit card. The registration page will tell you what locations carry that plan. For example, there is one company that runs hot spots in all the major airports... you subscribe, and then whenever you are in an airport, you can access the web.

What do I need to create a wireless external hard drive?

Here's the situation. Hubs and I have just combined households. Between us we have a Macbook Pro laptop (10.5.8. mine), an HP laptop (his), a westell router from century link and 3 external firewire/usb hardrves, one of which serves as my time capsule. We also have a wireless printer.
One of the external harddrives has my tv shows and movies, downloaded from itunes, stored temporarily since my mac is out of space. We'd like to be able to access our external harddrives wirelessly, so that I can move my itunes library and media files to one and access them wirelessly, have my time capsule hooked up permenantly, and so he could access his moies/shows/music on his external hard drive wirelessly.
What do I need to create a wireless hookup for my external hard drives that is compatible with macs and pcs, and is relatively easy to do (neither of us are particularly tech savvy, but with the right instructions we can do okay)

That router you have is really not a router. It is a DSL modem that does have rudimentary router with one port.
What you really need to do is set the westel into Bridged Ethernet mode, that disables the router function in it, and get yourself a good router that has a USB port to connect a USB drive or printer to it. there may be models that have more then one USB port so you could connect multiple devices to the router.
It isn't hard making these changes but i won't go into it here. For that go to DSLReports.com and look up your ISP and then the FAQs for your ISP. More then likely someone has posted detailed instruction on how to do what I described above for your model Westel modem and your ISP.

Setting up a new imac g5 for wireless internet.

I have recently brought a new imac g5 and want to set it up by wireless internet.
My dad lives 2 doors down from me and has a pc with broadband and i was wondering if i could use his broadband by setting up my mac with wireless.
What would i need to do this and would it matter that he has a pc.

I'm not too sure about the iMac but I know my laptops can pick up wifi signals that are a good 1/2 mile away, in the City of Baltimore for example, with my laptop, I can pickup 4 - 6 signals from my Studio, obviously most of them are protected (secured) signals, and I know for a fact there are not 6 people around me running independent wireless broad band within a few houses.
It really all depends on how strong a signal the router can put out and how good the iMac can pick up. 2 houses is not very far away here in the US in regards to acquiring a signal... your dad is going to have to set up the router in a window facing your place and you will have to set up to a window nearest his place, if you can pick up a signal but is weak then try the 'signal booster'... You need to power off the modem for 15-30 seconds, then power back up and then connect. The modem is remembering the last connection (your friend).

It has an audio output socket and air play will stream music from your mac to the device wirelessly. If you want to listen to the radio will need to do so via iTunes or use a program such as Airfoil (free):
