Wireless KB Update 2.0 - Interesting...

Question

Well well, maybe I'm tracking this down. I have one of the original Aluminum Apple keyboards.
My keyboard has recently gone CRAZY - essentially I've tracked it down to the Function key being "stuck" on. I can see this behavior by viewing it in the Keyboard Viewer. I've also noticed the Use F1, F2, etc. as standard function keys works opposite as expected for me with my Aluminum keyboard - but not my Macbook pro keyboard.
Okay, so I went hunting for new firmware to see if I could force and update. My Macbook Pro is the last machine I have that connects to this darn keyboard.
I found this:

I find three things interesting related to my situation:
1) I've installed 10.6.2 - which this page says includes the required firmware and
2) "Install this software to use the function key one-touch controls of your Mac with your aluminum Apple Wireless Keyboard." - guess what - it's my function keys that are messed up.
3) I've tried to run the firmware update and it says my keyboard is up-to-date and won't install the firmware.
So, either I've mistakenly installed this firmware intended for the 2009 Aluminum keyboard on my old keyboard, or... 10.6.2 BT Aluminum keyboard SW is screwed up?
I've got three machines in the house that no longer speak to this keyboard.

I have a brand new wireless keyboard... so it's never going to work.  BUT... I found a sort of work round! 
Since it's eyeTV that I want to control the volume more than the system volume I discovered cmd and up/down arrows do the job.  I gess I'll forgo the brightness function.
I'm a little frustrated that it appears Apple seems to want to push me towards an upgrade of a perfectly serviceable iMac G5.  I'll be keeping it to watch TV, surf the web, wordprocess and let the macbook pro handle photos & video.
