Wireless kernel module seems to "drop out"

Hi,
I recently installed arch with gnome and networkmanager. Everything is ok execpt that my wireless card seems to stop functioning at random times for 2 seconds and then work again, the module seems to "drop out of the kernel" and come back online again. I have intel pro wireless 3945ABG and insalled the iwl3945 module. Anybody know what's the problem.
Thanks

If you're using the 2.6.30-kernel, you should try and downgrade to .29.
I'm having the same issues using the ath9k-driver (weak signal strength, frequent disconnections, low speeds) and downgrading works for me. Your problem might be related.
How do you downgrade? I suspect this is my issue as well. Also once I do downgrade, how do I prevent pacman from auto-maticly upgrading it again?

  • Wireless 2.4ghz channel keeps dropping out on HH5

As per title really. Recently the HH5 has started losing the 2.4ghz connection. 5 GHz still working fine. Have reset the 2.4ghz connection and all is well for a while, but then drops out some time later. Really irritating now as my PC only uses 2.4 band and I keep being thrown off my office VPN...
    Please help...

You can get a 5GHz dongle, wireless-ac preferably for the PC.

  • Wireless dropping out - a bit disgruntled with BT.

    Hi,
I had a problem with my BT Home Hub 2. The wireless connection regularly drops out to all the wire;ess devices in the house. (3 x laptops) and there is nothing that seems to be in common when it decides to fail and it doesn't come back online unless I restart the hub.
The BB connection to the exchange is okay and fast, our BT Vision Youview box has no issues and when the wireless drops I can still connect using a LAN ethernet cable. The hub is plugged into the main socket.
inSSIDer shows that the wireless signal disappears when it drops out
I have a spare non-BT wireless router and that works fine without dropping out but of course BT Vision does not work throgh that.
I have changed the filter. The hub is plugged directly into the main socket (I have no extensions) and I have tried different wireless channels. Our small bungalow is isolated and there are two other wireless signals just receivable from my house from an nearby school. One is on channel 1, the other on 11. I use channel 6. When the wireless is working we get a full strength signal throughout the property.
I contacted BT through chat regarding this issue and they first of all tried to sell me a wireless extender. I said not to bother because my contract is up soon and I'll just swap to either Sky or TalkTalk and I'll get a new hub. This was the reaction:
"Soumik Majumdar: I have gone ahead and replaced the hub  for you. You were using a hub 2. Now you will be receiving your brand new hub 3  within next 3-4 business working days. Please wait for the hub to reach you."
Yesterday I received a refurbished Hub 2 not the new Hub 3 they promised. And guess what, it doesn't work as well as the old one. I have had to restart it six times in the last day to get the wireless back, which is worse that the old hub.
I guess I'll just changed providers so I get a new hub.
    Thoughts anyone please?
    Thanks,
    Leinorackham

I believe the HH2 does have a known problem with the wireless becoming problematic through time. I know you have already done this but the best thing is to contact BT and ask them for another replacement and preferably a HH3.

Hmm... personally I would never run any command without understanding what it does, but it's your funeral, I guess.
Apart from that, are you sure larch is still compatible with Arch? It's nearly four years since the last update in the larch git repo, and as I'm sure you know, Arch changes frequently. I'd suggest you try to contact the developer directly.

  • Upload causes Broadband to drop out

    Hi
I have Business Broadband and recently the connection seems to drop out 6-7 times each day. I seem to have no luck with having BT investigate as it seems that as long as the connection comes back after turning the router on and off again (it does), then in BT's eyes you don't have a problem.
I have done my best to find patterns and I have found that it always happens when we are in the middle of a large file upload and then *any* download activity will kill the entire connection. Sometimes it recovers but in most cases I have to reset the router to get  the connection back.
I have bt broadband at home and have never experienced anything like this. Its just solid for weeks on end.
Has anyone else experienced a similar problem or would like to offer any clues why its happening? The frustrating BT support staff flow chart of Line Test->Reset Router->"Anything else i can do for you sir?" doesn't seem to cater for my problem hence my posting to this forum.
Thanks in advance for any advice.
    Regards
    Ian

  • Optus drop out issue

I note that there is at least one post on this topic - just looking for further input. When buying my iPhone 2 weeks ago I changed from Telstra (not 3G) to Optus 3G. Now my Optus signal seems to drop out very frequently - almost always when I "wake up" my phone but also during calls. Someone noted that if you change your phone to 2G it works better - but what do I lose functionally if I do this?

"what do I lose functionally if I do this?"
You lose the 3g data speeds when using the data network.

  • Satellite L500: WLan drops out and doesnt work most of the time

hi everyone, i have a toshiba satellite L500 running windows 7. have been using iprimus internet, wirelessly, no problems for a few weeks, before that, was using it via ethernet cable as i didnth ave a wireless modem. my laptop was off charge the other night and went flat, next morning when i woke up and turned it on, it wouldnrt connect to the internet.. after hours and hours of phone calls to iprimus, and numerous winsock resets, ethernet cable testing, and modem resetting, they tell me that the problem is within my laptop...
So i rang toshiba.. and they got me to go into device managers, and then network adapters, and disable, actually uninstall the wireless drivers, then reinstall.. and it worked.. finally... (forgot to add with all the iprimus confusion someone had reset my passowrd and i had to configure that to the laptop..
so anyway, after all these calls, i did a complete restore of the laptop, and wiped everything and reinstalled it all, and therefore reinstalled the modem. this time in modem setup it was telling me the wireless network adapter was unplugged, and would only let me set it up via ethernet..
now earlier today i did have the internet.. but it dropped out randomly.. webpages will go slow, sometimes it will reconnect, other times it wont. now i thougbht i might try and uninstall and reinstall the modem again,s ame error, and this time, cant get on wirelessly at all.
ive googled to see if others ahve had this problem.. and seeing what other people wrote, i went into my battery settings, and checked the WLAN didnt go into sleep mode etc, and ive also checked everythings enabled. ive no idea what to do,, neither iprimus or Toshiba will give me any anwers, both companies are just blaming each other lol
    so i
it does appear to be my laptop, as all lights are on modem.. and iprimus keep telling me its not registering with them ( the disconnections) so it must be my wireless. though everytime my laptop dropped out of internet, so would my bfs iphone we were testing, and so did my other laptop which is partially stuffed but could normally still connect to the net.. so thats telling me its a modem problem.. ive no idea what to do.. and cant keep this via ethernet on the bench in this new hosue ive moved into,as with 2 kids under 3, thats just asking for trouble..
    anyone have any suggestion??
    thanks in advance

wel after many more phone calls to iprimus, i finally found a helpful indian, who ran me through the modem setup AGAIN like everyone else has, this time in its security settings, he got me to change the wireless signal channel from 2 to 9, said that would improve the signal, every other person when explaining the issues i was having, always told me to set it on 2.. so this has improved it dramatically in the day, but at night, particulary around 830pm, it drops out over and over and over...
would this just be a faulty modem, and perhaps buying oen from a harvery norman etc would be better?? or could it just be iprimus as a whole with there wireless coverage? im not in an iprimus area, theyve borrowed the lines of telstra or something.. so im on a crappier plan in this new house, and dont have adsl2 just 1500 speed. would this have anythign to do with the poor reception, or perhaps is there something in my house interfearing, or in my neighbors house? there is a satelite here, but no actual foxtel connected, looks as though it has been before. there is also an alarm here, not in use though.. ive not even seen if it turns on..

  • Anyone know why internet drops out for iMac but not ipad or iphone? Thanks

I have been trying to download Mountain Lion and  I keep getting 'an error has occured' after about 40 mins or an hour.  Then I notice that the iMac is not connected to the Internet.  However the iPad and iPhone are (using airport).  I am using ethernet adapters which are paired.  I have also taken my 24inch iMac out of the study and into the hall and connected it directly to the router using an ethernet cable with still the same result. I have been on the Apple helpline to a high level but they have been unable to sort it out and we've checked most things. I have plenty of capacity on the iMac so it should take the Mountain Lion ios easily.  I have checked the broadband speed and it was 6.21 (using the ethernet adaptors).  Could there be a conflict somewhere between the iMac and the BT broadband?  It does seem to drop out when we listen to our Sonos system too. Please help. Thanks, Fioled

Downloading Moutain Lion requires a high speed broadband connection.
6.21 will never work. That is not broadband.
Make certain your Mac can run Mountain Lion > System requirements for OS X Mountain Lion
Check your download speed here > Speedtest.net by Ookla - The Global Broadband Speed Test
Anything less than 15Mbps will not be fast enough to download Mountain Lion. It's a 4.35GB (approximately) file. That will time out on a slow connection.

  • Kernel modules not loading automatically in 3.10?

    Hello everyone,
After I've update to 3.10 (I think that that was the problem), my kernel modules seem not to load automatically anymore.
In the past, programs like efibootmgr and Virtual Box worked without a problem, now I have to manually load the appropriate kernel modules (efivars and vboxdrv, respectively) for the programs to work. I've done a quick check and it looks like I also have this problem on a different machine. Is this normal?
    Thanks!

    Thanks for your responses!
Yes, updating went fine and I'm now running linux 3.10.5-1 (also rebooted).
I'm aware that I can load them via modules-load.d, but I though it was neat that everything loaded automatically, and I just was wondering if this is expected behavior. If it is, I would update the wiki and such, but I'm still not sure why they would remove this. (I haven't heard anything about it)
Do you know of any other modules that I can test? That should be loaded automatically?
    Thanks!

  • T60 wireless - OK on XP, drops out on Windows 7

    Hello,
I have a T60 (2007-FVG) and I have a HDD for it with XP on and one with Windows 7 Ultimate on.  On XP the wireless is fine in my living room whereas on Win7 the wireless drops out every time I go into my living room.  I also have an R61 laptop with Windows 7 on and this is also fine, in fact when I have the T60 and the R61 side by side the R61's connection is fine but the T60 drops out.
I have downloaded the latest driver from your site (13.04.0000) and installed it.  On the properties of the device tab it shows as Atheros Communications - 9/6/2009 - 2.0.0.75.  All of the wireless settings seem the same between XP and Win7.
Any ideas on how I can fix this, it cannot be a hardware issue.
    Many Thanks

    Hello,
Perhaps the operating system is putting the wireless adapter to sleep in order to save power?  In the device properties for the Wireless Adapter, try disabling the option to turn off the device to save power, and see if that makes any difference.

  • Wireless mouse intermittently drops out/stops working

I have just bought a Mac Mini. I'm not a fan of Apple keyboards or mice, so I've bought a third party keyboard and I'm using a mouse that I already had (Microsoft Wireless Mouse 1000). Whilst it works fine with my Macbook Pro and PC, with the mini I get drop outs in the form of jerky movement and occassionally stopping long enough to see it just isn't moving. The mini works fine with a wired mouse.
My gut feeling from playing around with the different mice and computers is that it is actually the aluminium case shielding the signal from the mouse (as both are on the desktop and the mini sits at the back of the desk with the USB ports on the back and a great chunk of aluminium therefore in front of it.
I have a USB hub built in to the monitor, but that seems to have the same problem - the USB ports are behind the panel and associated electronics. Sadly, my keyboard (Ducky Zero DK2108) doesn't have a hub built in, so I can't connect the dongle to that either.
I'm just surprised I haven't seen (after a lot of googling) other complaints about the same. I may have to reluctantly buy a Bluetooth mouse as the BT antenna is of course outside of the Alu case. An alternative may be to use a small USB hub that can be positioned with line-of-sight to the mouse. It seems absurd I would have to do either of those things.
Can anyone else comment on their experiences?
    Thanks!

  • Wireless keeps dropping out

The wireless was working fine, i had it working with network-manager i then was doing some work that i wanted to do via ethernet so switched the wireless off using the switch and now it keeps dropping out, i have had to remove network-manager as it wouldnt let me connect to wired for some reason, and have tried to get wireless re-working with wifi-menu, i have delected the config and created one using the examples and using netcfg and still having no luck. I looks as if the device is going into "power saving" and wont come out, outputs below:

  • Wireless drop outs: draytek vigor 2600: macbook pro: channel 6

    Hi all
Thought I'd drop this is, as it may help others??
I've been having real problems with unstable wireless drop outs, it's been driving me barmy!
I've been using a draytek vigor 2600 plus, when connected via ethernet, it's brilliant, use wireless and it *****, with drop outs every minute or so, and when it does connect the strength is shocking even though my router is above me, about 6 foot!
I used www.istumbler.net/ and found that my next door neighbour has his router on channel 6... same as mine, since this I've changed to channel 12 and now signal strength is full (on the airport logo) and haven't had a drop out for hours...
I'll post again if the status changes, but give it a try if you are having problems similar...
    hope this helps.
    Az

I have been having the same issue for the last two weeks. No real indication as to why it ever began other than I had turned off my router and Airport Extreme Base Station off for a weekend while I was away from my place.
iPad, iPhone, iPod Touch, all have no issues at all with my Airport Extreme Base Station. Can stay connected throughout my living room, bathroom, bedroom, no issues whatsoever.
My 5 month old MacBook Pro 2.66 GHz Core i7 Airport is sometimes perfect, able to connect, DHCP, and browse without issue. Then, for no reason, I won't be able to join my wireless network, or when I can join, I can't pick up an IP address. And then it will connect, pick up and IP, and then it won't browse. No real rhyme or reason to when this will happen, or when it works.
I thought that it was an issue with my MacBook Pro, but then my sister visited with her brand new MacBook Pro 2.26 Intel Core 2 Duo, and while a month ago she was able to connect, DHCP, and browse without issue, this weekend she had all of the same issues I was having.
My XBOX 360 and MacBook Pro have absolutely no issues with the wired connection. Only my WAN seems to have this issue.
Did you ever find anything more to this?

  • Wireless Dropping out

    Hello.
It does seem like a usual post here, but my wireless connection constantly drops out.
However, it is only when there is a download.
I gather that I'll probably get a "try changing the channel as you're dropping out due to interference" response, however, I would like to understand why this is only happening during downloads.
    Issue and Situation
Upon attempting downloads (software patches, game patches, software download, etc), I lose my connection to the wireless 3-4 minutes after the download.
If I do not download, I never lose my connection.
The wireless will not let me connect back to it, unless I reset the router.
The wireless is in the room above me. It's a BT Home Hub v2.
If I put my computer right next to the router, I do not lose my connection to the wireless during download (hence it must be a frequency issue).
I have never had the issue in the past 7 months, it only suddenly happened 2 weeks ago.
As I said, I want to know why , especially why it won't let me connect back to it, as I gather I'm going to have to change the router frequency. (On a side note, given I have 7 BT wireless, 1 BTFON, 1BTOpenzone, and 3 Sky routers in range, what frequency would be best?)

you can try downloading inssider2 (istumbler if MAC) and then run it. This will show the broadcasting networks round about you and their channels including your own. If you then enter your router and change your wireless channel to a free or less congested channel.
this takes the guesswork out of channel selection

  • PDA ADHOC ETHERNET WIRELESS DROPS OUT

I'm utilizing an AD-HOC computer to computer wireless Ethernet connection between my laptop and my PDA to transfer data between my laptop and PDA.
The LabVIEW application on the PDA runs great once I have a good wireless Ethernet radio connection! However, I am having continuous trouble with the wireless Ethernet radio connection. It can take minutes to finally establish connection at times, sometimes it won't connect for hours, sometimes it will connect immediately. The signal strength meter on the PDA will go from good to best to good to dropping out entirely. Some days it works great, connects quickly, and stays connected. Some days it hardly connects at all. It all appears only to happen in my work environment, which includes being in a building and also outside on a test track. I tried the system at home over a recent 4 day holiday. The system connected immediately, and stayed connected every time for the entire four days. I would shutdown and re-connect from time to time. Every time the response was excellent.
I'm thinking that I may be having some type of radio interference problem at work. I've tried 9 different broadcast frequencies to no avail. Is there a way of increasing the signal strength of the radio frequency being transmitted from the PDA? Something I'm missing?
The Dell Axim 51V PDA is running windows mobile with the latest bios upgrade. The latest bios version hasn't offered any soultion.   I also have the same issues with a  Dell Axim 3.1 PDA running pocket PC 2003.

You don't say which WIFI you are using but the following is applicable to 54g and the older standard.
This is the nature of WIFI but you can improve matters.... If someone has one of those television transmitters that uses WIFI 2.4Ghz you are probably shot although I can report that the XBOX 360 controllers seem to exist very happily....
Set the data rate as low as possible to support the application and also set the Fragment Threshold and RTS thresholds lower (750 from 2500).
You may also find it helpfull to turn of auto channel hopping and fix the channel as well as turning off features such as pre-amble length detection and if there is a roaming decision parameter adjust it for distance rather than throughput. Turn it off if you can.
I also found that fixing IP addresses routes etc. seems to help as well and it seems more tolerant of drop outs as a result.
This is generally in the configuration parameters for the hardware.
This will need to be done at both ends.... I suspect however that an access point would be better as the antenna location will or should be optimised That's one reason why people use them. In an industrial context the best I have seen to date is the CISCO stuff but it costs....
