Wireless Kernel Panics Fixed with Airport Update
It has been 48 hours - not one kernel panic due to wirless. (and I have downloaded plenty of files, the first thing to trigger shutdown)
My heart has sunk a few times when the LCD looked like the gray veil was about to drop, relief just web page changing. I hope this lasts. The irony is that I love my MBP even more, my faith in Apple has been restored, (bit like making up - lol). I have to mention that Apple Australia were quick to reply to my email. Thank you, Apple.
Very glad I retrieved my MBP before they started taking it apart - it could be that lack of logic board stock actually saved this MBP.
Good Luck all, hope Airport Patch fixes your problem, I am curious, if Apple are aware this patch has fixed this problem, they must know what caused it in the first place.

What wireless adapters are compatible with Airport Extreme?
What third party wireless adapters are compatible with Airport Extreme?
I would suggest checking out some of the wireless USB adapters provided by Other World Computing (OWC). They have a number of models to choose from. The link is to just one of their offerings.

My 2006 old 17" Mac Book pro is won't connect to Airport Extreme older version with update 7.5.2 and also with 7.6.2. In fact if I implement that update airport extreme will transmit over channel 100 which my Mac pro is unable to pick. Any advise ?
Thanks. Thanks "a brody" ! Now I know I am talking to someone who knows the problem; I have checked with the site you advised me and I can tell you that my 17"MacBokk Pro (I am sorry for the mistake on first message) is one of them; in fact I have purchased that Airport Extreme 802.11n Enabler. However I forgot to tell you that my Airport Extreme base is transmitting at 5Ghz with the n protocol and my MacBook Pro has been working very well utill I tryed to update the Airport base to that 7.5.2 version: at that point my MacBook has never been able to pick the signal any more unless going backward to 7.4.2. In doing some experiments, I have found that with version 7.4.2, my Mac was picking the 5Ghz signal at channel # 44, instead, with the update 7.5.2 and later, the base started to transmit to channel # 100 and it looks like my MacBook is unable to go over the 44 channel ! (one more thing: my Mac has Leopard 10.5.8 OS). I have tryed to change the channel in the Airport base back to # 44, but my model (my Airport Extreme base is not the last model) do not allow to change the channel selection to "manual": there is only one selection "automatic". This is why I tryed to see if my Airport Extreme card (Wireless card firmware version 1.4.16.2) was not fit to received and transmit data on channels over 44.
If you have any idea that will be greatly appreciated; any how thank you very much for your time and help. -
Brand-new Santa Rosa MBP, Kernel Panics related to Airport
Brand new MBP (2.4GHz 15"), anytime I do anything online I get a kernel panic. I am connecting to a WPA-2 network that is supporting stable connections to several other computers, including another (albeit older) MBP. I have no third-party sw installed, I have no peripherals attached, I have installed all available updates, I have run disk verify/repair and permission repair via the install disk and the problem persists. I have also physically inspected the RAM modules to make sure they're situated properly.
The console log shows mbuf failures (I can only access the log if I have the airport off) that are similar to the problem Apple identified in 10.4.8 but were supposedly solved w/ 10.4.9 (see http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?
artnum=303712).
So two questions: anyone else out there experiencing this on a WPA-2 or other network? If so, any fixes that don't involve me having to return this computer to Apple? If this is a QA issue that could have been prevented through better testing prior to release...Hey Don (and others)
I bought a new Santa Rosa MPB yesterday and am suffering the same issues. My office uses WPA (not sure about the specifics) and within the first hour of ownership (of my FIRST Apple machine ever) I suffered kernel panics.
I get back to my workplace from the local Apple Store, get all set up and online. I run all the software updates fine. Next, I shut the lid and proudly carry my new Mac to a meeting. Open the lid and notice I can't get online. I stop and start the wireless and immediately get a kernel panic.
Restart, and it happens again.
Restart, and I can get online finally. With the help of some coworkers I get to the panic.log file and notice the panic happens around the Airport.

Later I discovered that the office uses WPA. So I bring the MBP home and connect via my WEP encrypted WiFi, and haven't had the same problem once (so far it's been over 24 hours, with many "sleeps" in the meantime).
I did have another panic, waking up out of a 'deep sleep' this morning (after having had the lid shut for 6 hours)...

ACPI seems to have crashed something, hoping I can recreate this tomorrow morning.
At this point, I'm just glad to see I'm not the only owner of a the new MBP's suffering the same WPA-related crashes. Also, I do wonder if I got a replacement if it would solve anything, though I'm up for trying and may try tomorrow.
Overall, a bit frustrated (especially since after craving a MBP for months and holding out for the new models, to have these issues).
Oh, I also have a 2.4ghz 15"

Kernel Panics when using Airport Extreme Card...I think
So I have been to the Apple store 7 times in the last three days...here are the problems I've been having and what they've done. Any advice is greatly appreciated!
All of a sudden I started having Kernel Panic crashes (a least 5 a day.) Seemed to mostly happen when I was browsing (using Firefox.) Also I would usually experience an intermittent connection to the internet before a crash. (i.e. I would be browsing, then the connection would be lost...I'd turn off Airport...turn back on...then a few minutes later while browsing...crash)
Here is what I've done:
- At first we thought it was software...after two erase/install, that wasn't it.
- Maybe the new RAM from OWC...re-sat the RAM, took RAM out and replaced with factory RAM...had OWC send new RAM, that wasn't it.
- Maybe it is logic board, factory RAM, or Airport Extreme card...Apple replaced today...and THAT wasn't it.
- Got home after all these new parts and it crashed again while browsing wirelessly. So, I thought, "Could my Qwest wireless network be doing this!?!?!"
Have tried some different settings with Qwest and am awaiting another crash.
Does anyone have any idea what else I could try? (2 erase and installs, a new logic board, new RAM, new AE card, didn't do it!)
I so appreciate any help or advice. I'm in the middle of a couple of major projects and cannot bear to go back to the Apple store for an 8th time!

MacBook Mac OS X (10.4.9)
MacBook Mac OS X (10.4.9)I don't have any solutions, but I had been reading about some folks having airport related kernel panics in the MacBook discussion forum. As a matter of fact, I had a kernel panic a little while back on my MacBook, and the crash log pointed to some issues with airport drivers. Here is what Macfixit says about these drivers and I quote:
"Bad built-in hardware (including hard drives) Repeated kernel panics can be the result of incompatible, damaged or misconfigured built-in hardware. This includes built in AirPort, Bluetooth and other networking hardware, corrupt or damaged hard drives, faulty processors and more. Examine your crash log (as discussed in our tutorial "An introduction to reading Mac OS X crash reports") for clues as to which device is implicated.
Sometimes the fix is as simple as re-seating built-in hardware. Make sure any PCI, PCI Express, AirPort and other expansion-type hardware is firmly and properly seated in its appropriate port.
In other cases, the fix involves attacking the problem at a driver or kernel extension level. Again, examine your crash reports and look for components specifically linked to certain hardware. For instance, the following Mac OS X components are all used by Apple AirPort hardware, and can be implicated (by crash logs) in kernel panics:
com.apple.driver.AirPortAtheros5424(100.21)
com.apple.iokit.IONetworkingFamily(1.5.0)
com.apple.iokit.IOPCIFamily(1.9)
com.apple.iokit.IO80211Family(110.19)
After determining device-specific components, you can try re-installing them -- either by performing an "Archive and Install" of Mac OS X, or downloading and manually placing items."

Kernel panic.. with new logic board
Hi,
So I recently replaced my logic board after trying EVERYTHING to fix a somewhat frequently occuring kernel panic. Now however.. it has happened again.
Does anyone have any idea what could be causing this? I honestly feel like I've tried everything. Could it be bad RAM? I've changed the hard drive, done a fresh OS X install (perhaps its something in my settings from migrating my old stuff back over?), new logic board.. reset PRAM, every suggestion I could find.
Here is the old discussion before I changed the logic board. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3902490
Attached the latest crash log.

Any help at all or new fixes I could try would be greatly appreciated! Very frustrating!Cheers - I've run Rember a few times and it hasn't come up with any errors, but I've heard it's not a 100% accurate test. Looks like that's the only thing left it could be!

12 hour kernel panic, resolved with option key, but why?
i have no idea why my ppc G5 failed to start this morning.
booted up last night at 10:30, read mail, went to see new video from "within temptation" emailed to me from student - also went to their website and to the site of 'nightwish"
listened to 2 samples and then went to watch 24.
shut down computer about 2am, having forgotten it was on.
it is scheduled to autoboot at 6:16am with itunes playing as my alarm.
this morning it did not complete booting before kernal panic. it would not boot
ran diskwarrior 4.1, it found 33% out of order and fixed most - still are some problems with SUID files, that i understand may not be problems, just un-updated database files. it went into kernal panic when i tried to check my other 500gig seagate drive (i have 2 internal drives) that is home to timemachine and DVD movies (250gig of each). inserted leopard disc, ran permissions and several were corrected, some would not be repaired. verified both discs - both are good.
from apple site (run from my macbook) shut down booted with 'X' pressed - no go.
then booted with 'option' key pressed, selected my hard disc and everything booted normally.....why?
as a 10yr apple user, if you can tell me why this happened &/or how i can avoid it in the future i'd really appreciate it
thankyou

Message was edited by: ModeratorI have no idea what could have caused the kernel panic, how to read a back-trace, or why the problem may have corrected itself after an option-key reboot.
However, in an unrelated topic, this statement raises some concerns:
..."ran diskwarrior 4.1, it found 33% out of order and fixed most - still are some problems with SUID files, that i understand may not be problems"...
I have never used "DiskWarrior" so am not familiar with details of the versions, but if permissions were repaired while booted from the "Disk Warrior" disk (which I assume was done since the system was described as unbootable from the drive) and if the OS contained on that disk was 10.4, and if the system on the hard drive was upgraded to 10.5 from an earlier version, then it is likely that "DiskWarrior" has reset the system's permissions to 10.4 values, which are incompatible with 10.5.
Furthermore, if the SUID messages appeared as a result of such an action, "repair permissions" in 10.5 will not repair them, and the messages do not fall into the category of those that should be ignored, potentially indicating that the system is in a state with security issues. Those familiar with the command line may be able to manually correct the permissions, but otherwise, an "archive and install" is likely the only recourse.
from:
http://www.alsoft.com/DiskWarrior/support.html
..."Note: If you have used any utility to repair permissions of a Leopard startup disk while started from Mac OS X 10.4 or earlier, Alsoft recommends that you perform an upgrade install of Leopard over your existing Leopard install. This will restore any changed permissions to their original values without altering your data."... -
Kernel panic at startup following updated to 10.6.8
Following update via software update to 10.6.8, I had a kernel panic at start-up. I was able to start up in "safe" mode. I repaired permissions (numerous), verified the HD (appeared OK). Rebooted in normal mode, and got kernel panic at start up. Again booted into safe mode. Looked at the panic log and decided to get rid of two applications that I suspected might be problematic (soundflower and VaraAudio software). Rebooted in normal mode and again had a kernel panic at start up. Here is the text of the panic. If anyone can shed some light that would be great. If not, I can erase and restore via time capsule but I would rather not go to that trouble. Thanks in advance.

Kernel panics since last security update
Since installing the last security update I am getting frequent kernel panics and crashes.
Usually related to accessing remote samba shares while running Parallels VMs
Anyone experience the same thing?
Using Leopard 10.5.5 with the latest updates. I have ran the hardware check and everything is fine, this only started after the last security update.
2 for 1 question: Does anyone know how to uninstall the latest security fix??qwertme wrote:

Yes, wipe the system and re-install.
Or, may be able to repair this with the 10.5.5 Combo Update This is a fuller install, as opposed to an incremental "delta" update so it should overwrite any files that are damaged or missing. It does not matter if you have applied it before.
Remember to Verify Disk before update and repair permissions after update from /Applications/Utilities/Disk Utility.

Frequent kernel panic/crash with "zalloc: zone map exhausted"
hi,
can anyone please help me track down what's causing my kernel panics? They're happening a few times a day with the same basic structure. The BSD process name varies but has been 'Google Chome Helper' a few times. Most of the other stuff is the same, and it's always something like this at the top;
panic(cpu 2 caller 0xffffff8025a5220d): "zalloc: zone map exhausted while allocating from zone kalloc.8192, likely due to memory leak in zone kalloc.64 (3565775808 total bytes, 55713670 elements allocated)"@/SourceCache/xnu/xnu-2422.90.20/osfmk/kern/zalloc.c:2494

com.apple.kec.pthread 1hi,
thanks - yes, I've been through all sorts of info like that trying to troubleshoot what might be causing the problem. It only started occuring after updating to OS X 10.9.2. I was thinking that Chrome might be the problem, but it's not always listed in the 'BSD process name corresponding to current thread'. The backtrace always contains com.apple.GeForce(8.2.4) as well, which might be hinting at a graphics driver/card problem.
Any other suggestions are much appreciated!
cheers,
// greg

Kernel Panic iMac with External HD
Hi guys,
I bought a couple of weeks ago, the new Lacie Porche Design 3T USB3 for my iMac 2012.
This is the model: https://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?id=10587
Since then, I've been experiencing few "Kernel Panic" (5-6 times), all crashes seems to happen when I have file linked into the external HD.
Like for example, my iTunes library: sometimes, listening to music or doing a search, will crash the Mac. Or like when I'm editing my pictures with Aperture (they are linked into my Aperture library from the LAcie HD).
Does anyone has the same issue? Or know a possible solution?
I know it's related to Hardware when Macs crashe... (I've been 10+ Mac user and it did happen before).
Attached the crash report.
Thanks!

Kernel Panic after last full update - missing /lib
hi all
i have a problem witch my arch... i not use arch long time, because i work Adobe CS at my job. Any way after over month i boot my arch and i do normaly full update

<code>glibc: /lib is in file system</code>
so i read on polish forum i need use --force, so i do that, and after restart i have Kernel Panic... so i try chroot by Ubuntu, i do this before a lot time but this time i get error message when i try chroot
<code>chroot: cannot change root directory to /ar/bin/bashrc: No such file or directory</code>
but /ar/bin/bash existing any way so i reali dont know what happened, but i detect directory /lib just have /modules/3.3.2.1-ARCH nothing more... and i this is a reaso of my problem,
any idea how i can repair installations ??
thanksIt's a biggie, but read this thread (all of it) - there are instructions in there for fixing the forced upgrade, but also lots of other stuff to be aware of:

Kernel panic after trying to update to version 10.4.10 (Intel iMAC)
Hi all,
yesterday evening I wanted to install (via automatic software update) the new software update "Mac OS X 10.4.10 (Intel)" on my intel iMAC. Unfortunately the installation failed and I don't know why. Having not yet restarted I tried the installation again but again it failed.
Then I restarted my iMAC and since then I get every time now a kernel panic: 'Unable to find driver for this platform: "ACPI"' ... Kernel version: Darwin Kernel Version 8.9.1 ...
I tried already several things like
- booting in safe mode (holding <shift>): not possible
- hardware check (holding 'D' with MAC OS X DVD #1 in drive): detailed hardware check ok
- reset of PRAM (holding command-option-p-r): didn't help
- starting in single-user-mode (holding command-s): get same error (panic)
- start in "open firmware mode"(holding command-option-o-f): not possible
I'm just a MAC user sind February of this year and not yet that experienced with kernel panics and how to overcome such a problem. I hope that someone more experienced can give me a hint or a solution description how to get my iMAC running again.
Thanks for any help,
Michael
