Wireless keyboard doesn't connect on startup under leopard and alum imac

The white apple wireless keyboard worked just fine via bluetooth with my old Mac mini and 10.4.X
But just got a new Alum 20" imac with 10.5.6. I have paired the wireless keyboard via bluetooth and it does work once I'm up and running.
But every time I start up the computer after a shut-down or restart, the imac searches for the apple bluetooth keyboard and never finds it. I have to plug the wired keyboard to the mac to start it and then re-do the bluetooth pairing EVERTY TIME. Then the white wireless keyboard works via bluetooth again. I have changed the batteries on the keyboard and checked their strength- they are fine.
What's going on? How do I fix this? Does the white wireless keyboard work with the new imacs and Leopard?

Dodie,
There's nothing wrong with your bt keyboard since it was working fine with your old mac mini. Try this:
1. Backup the IOBluetoothFamily and IOBluetoothHIDDriver kexts in /System/Library/Extensions in your new imac.
2. Copy the same kexts from 10.4.x. In my case, I upgraded to Leopard using a new hard drive so these files were still on my old Tiger hard drive.
3. Clear your cache. If you not sure how to do this, download Leopard Cache Cleaner and do a 'deep clean'.
4. Restart and pair your bluetooth devices using Bluetooth Setup Assistant. My Apple wireless alum keyboard and wireless MM paired immediately. They continue to paired after I restarted / shutdown.

  • White Wireless keyboard doesn't connect on startup.

I have a new Mini and a older Apple Wireless Keyboard, the big one. Anyway the problem is it doesn't connect to the Mini on start up. This is major problem because I can't get past the login screen without it.

Having a similar problem. Keyboard paired fine before upgrade to leopard, now won't pair. Where is that "preference file" located?

  • IMac shutting down on startup - Can't enter safe mode as wireless keyboard doesn't connect quickly enough

    Hi all,
I was planning to use bootcamp to install Windows 7 on my mid-2010 21.5" iMac.
Bootcamp recommended I usk disk utility to repair the drive. I had a snow leopard install disk in the drive, (I didn't realise Lion already had it's recovery tools built in to the hard drive.)
Disk utility said it can't repair the drive and recommended I start backing up my data (because the hard drive could be about to fail). Fine, so I restarted, with the intention of backing up everything (all my work for the last 12 months). So I press the power button, grey screen comes up, then the apple logo, then a progress bar appears (found this odd at first, but later found out it has something to do with disk utility and a bad hard drive) it gets to around 20% and then all power is cut from the iMac and the hard drive stops/everything powers down.
Now, I can't seem to get my iMac to boot into recovery utilities or into safe mode because it doesn't connect to the wireless keyboard in time before it shuts down. So, if I use a wired keyboard (I have a dell USB keyboard that I can take from the office), will I be able to boot into safe mode?
Also, if the disk in drive is causing the problem, then I can't remove it because the wireless keyboard won't connect/register any keypresses.

    Ok so, status report:
Wired keyboard is non responsive when I plug it in before/during boot. So i guess it needs to be plugged in before the iMac shut down. That's that out the window.
Plugged in headphones and I can't hear the startup chime so don't know when to start holding buttons.
To make matters worse, the wireless keyboard is no longer paired with the iMac, getting a green blinking light which indicates it wants to connect to a computer or device.
So I can't enter any commands whatsoever, can't remove the disk in the drive or boot safe mode. It's my worst nightmare.

  • Apple Wireless Keyboard doesn't connect to MacMini

    Hello,
I have a problem with my wireless keyboard. When I installed my Mac Mini last year together with the Apple Wireless Keyboard and Wireless Mighty Mouse I hadn't any problems.
Once both devices didn't want to work anymore. At first the mouse finished its work. I used another USB Mouse and since that time the mouse works fine than before. The next problem I get with the keyboard. But all I did, wasn't successful. The MacMini doesn't connect to the keyboard.
    I tried...:
    1.) to use new batteries
2.) to try it with my MacBookPro (it connect without a problem and is afterwards fully functional!)
3.) to use for a short time my old USB-Keyboard
4.) to try once more connecting it over the Bluetooth-Preferences
5.) to delete in the libraries com.apple.bluetooth.plist and then to restart the Mac.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks
    Alex

I reinstalled the OS and simultaneously I downgraded it to 10.5. It seems to work now perfectly again. Also the often occured kernel-panics disappeared.

  • New apple wireless keyboard doesn't work after upgrade to leopard on mini

I am posting this because I have not seen anybody else post this issue, but it is fixed at this point.
I installed the new apple ultra slim wireless keyboard on my mac mini about a month ago...was working great...until I upgraded to Leopard. The keyboard would connect, and the esc, function, and arrow keys would work great. However, none of the letter, number, or enter keys would work. This was all observed using the 'show keyboard viewer', which is accessible by allowing 'show input menu in menu bar' from the 'international' system preference pane.
I rebooted many times and even updated to the latest leopard patch set.
During this whole time, the wireless mighty mouse has worked without issue.
I removed the device and added several times with no change. I even moved the wireless keyboard to my G5 and it worked great over there.
After a few days of trying various things to no avail, I was finally able to get the keys to work, but I am not sure why. I had a wired keyboard connected and kept going back and forth between the wireless and wired keyboard and all of a sudden it started working. Very strange.

this problem is fixed, but if anybody has an idea what happened, I would like to know.

  • My Apple wireless keyboard won't connect to my Mac mini any more.

My Apple wireless keyboard won't connect to my Mac mini any more. Going through the Bluetooth Setup Assistant doesn't help - the computer finds the keyboard, but when I type in the pass code it fails to pair with it. The green LED on the bottom of the keyboard flashes twice at roughly two-second intervals. I've tried replacing the batteries and this has had no effect. I have all the latest software updates installed.

    Welcome Cheirhandrea!
There are easily hundreds of variants of the iMac dating back to 1998. Many of the pre-2006 iMacs this forum covers cannot support an Apple wireles keyboard. Because this model has been in production for so long, it is important for you to let us know as much about your computer as possible so someone won't give you information that may not be appropriate to your iMac variant.
    So we need to know:
    1) Your processor type and Mac OSX version, both available by doing "About this Mac" from your Apple menu at the left end of the menu bar:
    2) The make and model of the keyboard.
I asked for your Mac OS version because "iOS" as currently shown in your equipment profile cannot run on any Mac computer, only Apple's mobile devices. Once you get the OS version from "About this Mac," please change your profile to avoid further confusion and get help faster without the delay of someone having to ask for clarification before they can start helping.

Impossible, there are zero, as in none, zip, nadda viruses for OS X. If you have viruses on it they are for MS Windows and will not affect OS X. I suspect the hard disk has crashed, if you have backup then it's not a big deal to have it changed, just take it into your local Apple Store or AASP for service. If you have not been backing it up you may be in for a painful lesson on why backup is critical.

of course you need a working mouse to go through these steps....i think everyone should keep a usb set on hand to resolve these kinds of issues.....

My wireless mouse often loses connection. I replace batteries and it works for a few days before becoming problematic again. Battery currently shows 100% and connection is lost intermittently. Bluetooth is on and wireless keyboard works. Any suggestions?

Is it possible that you have a bad bunch of batteries?
My Magic Mouse on one computer and the Mighty Mouse on another use batteries I bought through the Apple store (with a charger). They last a long time.
    http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC500LL/A/apple-battery-charger
Another possiblity is that the mouse is defective. Since the keyboard connects, it has to be the mouse or the batteries.

  • Wireless Keyboard keeps losing connection

My wireless keyboard started getting hung up on a key and continues to to type it until the KB loses connection. Then it reconnects and sometimes repeats this several times before it starts working normally again.
It has also just been randomly losing connection without hanging up on a key.
Batteries are new and the iMac/keyboard and mouse is less than a year old.
    Any thoughts?
Mouse is losing connection too at times, but nothing like the keyboard.

    Hello B:
One thing to try is to make the devices "favorites" Directions for that are in other posts of mine.
However, the keyboard (from your description) could be faulty. Since it is less than one year old, I suggest you call Applecare with a warranty issue. I had a KB replaced (in warranty) a couple of years ago. Apple replaced it and paid the shipping both ways.

    HellO:
I would not waste time trying to troubleshoot the problem.  Since it is new, call Applecare with a warranty problem.  I had a similar problem with a new KB some time ago and it was replaced at no cost (shipping included).
