Wireless keyboard space bar is sticking

How do I unstick the space bar or correct the problem. I have spent more than an hour trying to find this discussion, finally had to google it.very frustrating. as you can see the space barsticks and I do not know how to fix it. ifit cannot be fixed,where do I go to get a new one, just boughtthis this week.

If the KB you bought was new, it is under Apple warranty for one year. If it is used, your only recourse would be with whomever you bought it from.

Keyboard space bar not working

Hi,
totally novice and new to mac here,my keyboard space bar working fine.. but with in an time span of 3 hrs something went wrong and now whenever i press it it gives thet error sound.But it works normal when i keep the shift key pressed.
so far which i can recollect the settings i have working before this event is:
1)enabled fast user switching.
2) changed the computer name
3) installed transmission and was dowloading 2 files
4) installled sun download manager and downloading solaris
5) enabled "announce the time" in clock preferences
my keyboard firmware update is uptodate
EFI firmware is 1.1 and up to date
thts all...
can anyone help?

actually i dont know the actually link.. but when i disabled speak selected text.. my space bar is working fine.
nor i dont knwo how it got selected ..

Apple Aluminum Wired Keyboard: Space Bar Issues

Depending on your typing style, you may need to change how you type for this keyboard to work properly. For example, many people type quickly and simply press keys on the edge rather than in the middle or top. For this reason, some keyboards have a larger spacebar, for example, so the wrist doesn’t need to turn in for the thumbs to reach the spacebar. Dell offers a keyboard for about $12 that has excellent ergonomic design:

The only problem with the Dell keyboard above is that eventually (after about 6 months to a year) the key travel may become a little sticky. On the Apple keyboard, the spacebar does not descend to where the thumbs are naturally positioned, so the thumbs must move up to hit the spacebar squarely in the middle. This usually results on tapping on the bottom of the spacebar. With the new Apple keyboard, tapping on the bottom area of the spacebar produces erratic results. Just now, I pressed the space bar about 20 times on the bottom of the spacebar and that generated about 5 spaces (about 25% functional). So, it will be necessary to press the spacebar squarely in the (vertical) center or toward the top. Horizontally, the spacebar seems to work just fine as long as you are pressing it in the vertical middle or top.
The caps lock key has similar issues as those with the spacebar mentioned above. Perhaps this is because it is a longer key than the other keys. If you are accustom to pressing the caps lock key with your little finger, you may try to engage caps lock by pressing the bottom portion of the caps lock key. This will work about 70% of the time, but not 100% of the time.

Thanks for the great description of the spacebar problem. I've been trying to figure out a good way to describe it. Here's my take:
As you point out, the front edge of the spacebar sits too far up our thumbs, so it's located too close to the thumbnails, instead of having some portion sitting under our thumb knuckles, so less of our thumb is touching the spacebar along its lower half than would be desirable for a good hit. But this is a problem mostly caused by the short travel of the Aluminum keytops--I held a previous-generation Apple white keyboard up to the Aluminum keyboard, and there's very little difference in spacing of the keytops between the two keyboards--the bottom edge of the spacebar on the Aluminum keyboard sits only a tiny bit higher on my thumbs. What little difference there is, contributes to the spacebar problem, but it's the shorter travel of the Aluminum keytops that causes of most of the trouble for the spacebar. Hitting just the bottom edge of the earlier keyboard's spacebar is compensated for, because the earlier keyswitch design allows the keytops to travel further down than the Aluminum's, and it's this longer travel that allows the older keyboard's spacebar to actuate every time. With the Aluminum, your thumbs get stopped too early by the strip of aluminum below the spacebar, which sits at almost the same height as the top of the spacebar. At least Apple got the spacebar's cantelievering right, so you can hit either end of the spacebar and still register a keypress, even though there's only a single keyswitch in the middle.
Possibly owners could make some modification to the spacebar to reduce this problem--maybe applying some kind of adhesive layer to the top of the spacebar to make it taller, but that would probably wear down too fast. More advanced modifications would include cutting away the strip of aluminum that our thumbs hit, but I doubt too many people would want to do that. Maybe someone could manufacture a taller replacement spacebar, or one that's slightly taller just along its lower edge, so the letter keys just above the spacebar wouldn't get overhung by the spacebar, causing you to hit the top edge of the spacebar when you want to hit one of those keys.
I tried this theory, by cutting out some strips of Post-It notes, about a quarter-inch wide, and five sheets thick, along the whole length of the lower half of the spacebar, and it worked pretty well, but felt a little odd. A properly custom-designed spacebar would probably feel more natural.
I'm still trying to get used to the aluminum's shorter key travel, after typing on regular desktop keyboards for about 27 years. One nice thing about the shorter key travel is that it's quieter, and so it's less distracting to other people in the room--maybe Apple did this so their laptops would make less noise in a classroom or office meeting? It also makes it less likely to wake up someone sleeping in the same room. Also, the shorter key travel has been a lot less stressful on my fingertips--even halfway through the day typing on the previous keyboards, my fingers would sometimes start to hurt a little.

Keyboard Space Bar

the space bar on our G4 will not move the cursor (in Appleworks,Text Edit or renaming in iTunes) but if the computer is "Sleeping" depressing the space bar will "awaken" the computer. I tried the keyboard from our G5 and it works OK on the G4.
Any ideas.

A thought... the Spacebar may be able to send a 'key-pressed' signal to wake the machine up (pressing any key should wake a machine), but for some reason no longer generates a 'space' signal. The way the Spacebar 'moves the cursor' is by entering the text character 'space'.
That theory would seem to be supported by the keyboard from the G5 working on the G4.
Try using the keyboard from the G4 on the G5 - does it still have the same problem then?
If so, the problem would be in the keyboard itself, and would be a hardware fault, not a software one. Such a fault could be created by corrosion from spilled liquid, or even from dirt. It could also be caused by having had something plugged into the keyboard that overloaded its power-passing capability. Usually the only solution to a fault of that kind is to replace the keyboard.

X220 keyboard - space bar is loud

The space bar on the keyboard of my new x220 is rather loud, much louder than the space bar on my x61s or x31. It's quite audible when I push it and louder on release. Also, the left Alt key is louder than the right Alt key.
I reseated the keyboard it seems fine. The two bottom screws go in easily and tightly.
I'm hesitant to send it in for warranty service, given the stories I've heard about repair and I'd rather not be without the computer.
Any suggestions?

Ask for a replacement keyboard of a different part number? Might work.

Virtual Keyboard space bar too big..

Actually 6 cm out of 14 total. By comparison with the A1359 Keyboard base it should be 4.5 to 5 cm, to keep the same proportion. You could then implement a non-erasing backspace key marked "<--" and a delete key to correct typing errors. The current system of mirror lens and positioning is an insult. Only chinese girls under 10 have small enough fingers to use it, if at all.
If you are typing in a non normal sitting position, particularly in bed,when you enter other chars or switch to numeric key extra spaces are inserted.
It's a nuisance. Reduce the size. Alternatively, you can make the space bar more insensitive, required you hold it a bit more time, but I realize not all people would like it, breaks the rythm..

Don't remove the space bar.
Purchase a can of condensed air to spray (available at most hardware and computer stores) around the edges of the space bar.
That should remove any dust and debris.

My iBook's Keyboard Space Bar, right and F5 buttons not working...

Yesterday I cleaned up my iBook's keyboard. Everything was working fine until I left my computer idle, even backlight of the display was dimmed. Then I noticed that my display was lit again, like if I had pressed a button on the keyboard, but I was away of my computer, I was on bed. Suddenly the keyboard started acting weird like if it had the command key pressed, so i disconected all power supplies and let the computer opened on my desk. I suspected that the keyboard somehow got wet, but I doubt it.
Today everything seem to be working fine, until I tried to type something and noticed that the space bar, F5 and the right arrow (also end) don´t work :S
I need help of what can be causing this, i already tried reseting the PMU, removing all power sources, checking preferences and even repaired permisions and noting seems to work. I just hope that my keyboard is not defective since my iBook just lost warranty past august :S

Keys on wireless keyboard seemed to be sticking

i just got a wireless keyboard for my ipad and something seems to be wrong with the keyboard or the bluetooth signal. i will be typing and will press a letter and get 20 t's or 10 j's etc. i am using the keyboard right next the ipad so the signal should be strong. is this normal or do i have a defective keyboard or ipad?

I found the problem.
'Mouse Keys' was enabled. On my computer System Preference>View>Accessibility>Mouse & Trackpad.
Took me 21/2 hrs to figure this out. Should be easier to find these solutions.

Wireless keyboard name does not stick, connection lost after reboot/restart

I know this topic has been addressed many times but I might have additional info to this.
I tried to rename my wireless keyboard. The name stays as long as I only let the computer sleep.
As soon as I do a restart/reboot and the connection is lost again, it's name is set back to the old name.
This might be related to the reason why it looses it's connection over and over again.
Does anyone know where this "name" is stored? There must be a plist file or something somewhere where the name is kept, maybe that's the file which is corrupt and must be deleted.
I also was wondering if it is possible to "reboot" the keyboard itself, maybe this setting is stored on the keyboard itself and it cannot properly maintain it.. that might be a reason why for some users the keyboard replacement has helped.

So, the same problem occurred and in a relatively shorter time than before. I began to think that something is causing this problem.
My theory is that it is a VMWare software issue. What I've been doing differently recently is using it in "Unity" mode as opposed to "Full Screen" mode. My guess is that the program is modifying my wireless permissions and screwing it all up.
So, what I've done is set the "Network Adapter" to "Host-Only". This denies the VMWare program internet access but still allows file sharing between the Windows virtual environment and the Mac hard drive.
Then I had to re-install Mac OS X all over again to fix the wireless settings/permissions mess.

Water Spill on Keyboard Space Bar Not Working

Greetings,
One of my employees recently spilled a cup of water on their keyboard. I unplugged the keyboard, shook the water out of it and it seemed to work fine. A few days later, I was informed that the "space key" was no longer working.
Is there anything I should try to repair it? I am used to being "hands on" with repairs to our systems (we have about 30 Mac's on site). But, I wasn't sure if spills are considered irreversible damage to keyboards, etc. Any suggestions?

Don't use the dish washer trick with an eMac keyboard (the Mac keyboard with the nice crumb and liquid catching clear under-tray). I recently had a spill on my keyboard and decided to take apart the keyboard to investigate why some of my old keyboard cleaning tricks were not working. On disassembly I discovered these keyboards are not like the keyboards of yester-year.
Old keyboards were simply a rigid printed circuit board (PCB) and then the keys over it that pressed down and shorted traces on the PCB to make a key stroke. hen those got dirty you could very easily literally wash them, let them dry and continue to use.
These newer Mac keyboards do not use the same method. Now they have a few layers of thin flexible plastic sheets with traces imprinted in them. Several of these are sandwiched together. The keys above press down and make contact and also press the layers of contacts together.
The problem with the new method is once you get liquid in there, the liquid seeps between the thin plastic layers and simply sits forever with no air flow to dry out the liquid. So once you get liquid in there, it will either never dry out or take a very long time (months minimum) to dry out.
Once you get liquid in there, about the only solution is to pull the keyboard apart and separate all the layers and let them air dry or wipe them down. It is a PITA since each key has a little rubber dome that goes over each spot and they are not attached to the keys, so you have to put the layers back together, then put each of those 100+ rubbers in place then attach the backing rigid piece without moving any of the rubbers. It takes a fair amount of time.
My keyboard still doesn't work 100%, so I will buy a new one one of these days. Next time, I won't even bother with trying to clean it. I will just spend the $29.95 and get a new one.

New Keyboard Space Bar Trouble

I have (2) new Apple Keyboards in my house.
I LOVE the feel of the keys, the looks, the size, etc...I love everything except I am noticing that the spacebar is not registering my inputs very reliably.
I am making a lot of typing mistakes by having two words together instead of separated by a space.
Is this a flaw in the spacebar?
Has anyone else noticed this behavior.

Yup, I've noticed thesame thing. Well, thereyou go! It drives me crazy, as I edit and proofread for a living, so it bugs me more than theaverage person. I've left this text as is to show thenumber of times it is happening.
Also, I thinkthe cable connecting the keyboard to the iMac is awfully short!
I like the feel of thekeyboard, but if I am goingto have to constantlygo back and fix the runtogethers, it won'tbe worth it.
On an ironic note, right this moment the spot for the new iMac just ran on TV. I had to laugh when I watched it. "The all-new all-in-one iMac." Maybe that means all-in-one words!

Space Bar on keyboard malfunction

What are the symptoms.... is it sticky, did you spill on it? If it's neither try restarting the computer, running disk utility, and if none of that works take it to the apple store to get fixed.

Hitting space bar scrolls safari or other programs twice

when i hit space bar safari or programs that accepts space bar for scrolling, twice as much as one hit happens. touch space but n twice scrolling happens. not sure why this is happening any help please? 1.42 ghz powerpc g4 512 mb built in

Hi, Natasha. Welcome to the Discussions.
1. Check the settings in the System Preferences > Keyboard & Mouse > Keyboard tab. You might try setting a slower the Key Repeat Rate or a longer Delay Until Repeat.
2. If you're using an external keyboard with your iBook, try a different keyboard.
3. If the Space Bar is sticking in other uses, e.g. normal typing, there may be a problem with the keyboard itself.
4. What changes did you make to your Mac before this problem arose? If the problem arose after making a change, it's possible the change is the cause.
