Wireless keyboard stopped working on my iMac

My wireless keyboard stopped working on my iMac. It shows that it is connected, but it won't respond.   It's not the batteries, and I tested keyboard on my iPad and it works fine on the iPad, so it is not the keyboard itself.
I also tried to connect a different wireless keyboard to my iMac, but the same thing happens... it shows that it is connected, but it doesn't respond.
When I go preferences >  bluetooth, the device shows as connected.  I have tried to remove it by highlighting it and clicking the   - (minus)  , but the - (minus) is not clickable.  It is gray.
Also grayed is the box that says 'discoverable'.  the box is checked however.
I am at a loss!!  Any ideas

You have to un-paired with your iPad not your Mac.

Dear list members, suddenly, the ESC key in my wireless keyboard stopped working. As it looks normal and all other keys are working properly, might it be a configuration problem? Could you please help me? I'm working on an iMac 27 late 2012 running OSX 10.10.2. Thank you.

Please reset the SMC, this may take 2-3 attempts and post back with the results.

  • After updates, wireless keyboard stopped working.

    HI...
All was going along swimmingly, setting up my new iMac... I did some updates and then for some strange reason my wireless keyboard stopped working? I know it’s not the keyboard because delete works, my widgets work and some other keys work - and - the whole keyboard was working from start up (at first)...
But I just can’t use the Alfa keys all of a sudden - very unusual, no?
    What happened?
Any opinions, suggestions and comments are greatly welcomed
    Thank you in advance....

For those who it may concern...
I called up support and I had to delete two files from the Systems Library called “com.apple...systempreferences.plist” and “com.apple.universalaccess.plist”.....
I hope you never need this information but - it worked for me....

  • Mighty Mouse and wireless keyboard stop working

Just got my iMac yesterday and everything worked out of the box. But once yesterday and once so far today, the wireless mighty mouse and keyboard stopped working.
Today I noticed after the mouse stopped moving the cursor, the little green light on the bottom of the mouse was blinking. I turned off the mouse and turned it back on, but the green light still blinked and the mouse still didn't work.
The only thing that did something was the power button on the iMac. I had to turn off the iMac and turn it back on. Then the keyboard and mouse worked again.
What's going on? Do I need to get the iMac repaired?

Hello and Welcome to Apple Discussions ...
    Try deleting this file. com.apple.bluetooth.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences folder to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot.
If that doesn't help, make sure the batteries are charged. Go to System Preferences/Keyboard&Mouse. Click the Bluetooth tab. Your battery levels are displayed there. When it gets down to one green bar on the left, install new batteries.
If none of the above helps, turn the mouse and keyboard off. Delete the mouse and keyboard from the System Preferences/Bluetooth devices window. Select the mouse in the window on the left, then click the minus - button. Now open the slider on the mouse so the green light blinks. Click + which will launch the Bluetooth Setup Assistant. Just follow the instructions. Same for the keyboard. If you still have issues with the wireless hardware, I'd take it back. You have 14 days in case you need to replace the iMac.

  • Wireless keyboard stopped working caps lock light does not come on but on mac mini unable to log in

Any help out there would be appreciated. Never had this problem before until now.. Mac mini was asleep. pressed space bar on keyboard.. machine woke up now i can't type anything. restarted the machine and now i can't log in. can only do it through my mbp with screen sharing.

For troubleshooting and emergency booting where BT may not
work, a wired USB keyboard is recommended, as spare/backup.
A windows keyboard can be OK to use, if you don't have one
and end up borrowing one from a neighbor, see link to compare.
If you are familiar with windows or also use BootCamp, there
is an article about keyboard use and mapping those k/b here:
•BootCamp: About keyboards and key assignment for MS Windows
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ht5636
I've almost always had at least one extra, new or spare keyboard.
    Good luck!

Wireless keyboard stopped connecting to iMac. Replaced batteries, restarted computer. Keyboard blinks green- cannot get steady green light. Computer does not recognize keyboard, nor connect. Tried deleting device and re-connecting, but keyboard is never seen by the Mac. Also tried same keyboard with a Macbook Air and keyboard was not recognized. other bluetooth device (mouse) works fine. Ideas?

For now, try a SMC reset.

  • My keyboard has stopped working on my iMac I bought a new keyboard and still not working any ideas?

MY keyboard has stopped working on my iMac I bought a brand new one and the keys work but the volume buttons do not operate the volume I've changed it twice now and the same thing is still happening

What is the make & model number of the keyboard?
You could get a keyboard remapping program & map someother key to the volumn key.
There is a list of them in this thread.

  • IMac Intel Core Duo Keyboard Stops Working Intermittently

    Hello,
About every 10 minutes or so, maybe longer, my iMac's keyboard stops working completely. The list shown below are additional items that I have tried or is a side-effect to the keyboard issue:
The problem occurs on more than one keyboard, therefore, it doesn't seem to be a faulty keyboard issue
The quick solution is to unplug the keyboard from the back of my iMac and plug it in again. Then the keyboard resumes its normal operation. However, on some occasions, the unplug/plugin technique does not work. It that case, I have to do a hard power-down, wait 10 seconds, then turn the iMac on again. Normal keyboard operation is finally returned.
The mouse will turn off, which is indicated by the light inside the mouse turning off
If the mouse does turn off, I unplug it from the keyboard and plug it directly into the back of the iMac. The light inside the mouse comes back on, but the mouse cursor is unresponsive
The iMac Intel Dual Core is about six years old.
    Any information is appreciated
    Thank you,
    Tony

Try doing a SMC reset, if that doesn't work try a PRAM reset. Don't be afraid to do these resets 2-3 times each if they don't work the first time.
    _SMC RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Unplug the computer's power cord and all peripherals.
    • Press and hold the power button for 5 seconds.
    • Release the power button.
    • Attach the computers power cable.
    • Press the power button to turn on the computer.
    _PRAM RESET_
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys on the keyboard: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously in step 4.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command-Option-P-R keys. You must press this key combination before the gray screen appears.
    • Hold the keys down until the computer restarts and you hear the startup sound for the second time.
    • Release the keys.

  • Apple wireless mouse and keyboard stop working ... now says OS X version and bluetooth incompatible

For no apparent reason my apple wireless mouse and keyboard stopped working. I was not upgrading or installing anything, the batteries are good, nothing was changed as far as I know. Now bluetooth discovers the paired devices, connects for about 30 seconds, the disconnects ... or stays connected but doesn't work.
What's happenned ... I'm rushing to finish a big job ... any ideas? I've tried re-pairing but doesn't work ... says that OSX version may be incompatible with device bluetooth ... I'm using Lion so maybe there is another lion problem?

    Hello:
Barry: What do you mean with "making devices favorites"?
    This is the method:
Go to system preferences>bluetooth.  Highlight an item in the sidebar.  If detailed information does not appear, click on the little gear and select show more info.  Then click on the gear again and select favorite.
And how could an hardware-related problem be (temporarily) solved rebooting the OS?
Intermittent problems are, IMHO, most often caused by hardware.  Restarting will occasionally "fix" problems - why, I do not know.

  • Bluetooth keyboard stops working when i plug in my iphone 5

    Hi All...
Heres a question from the twilight zone where strange things happen.
    My Hardware/Software used:
    - iMac OSX 10.9.2
    - Mac wireless Keyboard
    - Logitech mouse performance MX
    - iTunes 11.1.5 (5)
    - iPhone 5 v7.1 (11D167)
I plug in my iPhone via USB cable, and iTunes pops up.. it detects the iphone but not 100% as it just hangs... then out of nowhere, the keyboard stops working as it looses its connection, the only way to restore the connection is to reset the iMac.
    Any ideas?

  • Help?  My BT Wireless just stopped working (BT Mouse is OK)

Normally the wireless keyboard that came with the iMac (intel) is reliable, its about 4 yrs old now
but today - it just stopped working?
Although it shows (menu) as being connected (BT) and Batteries are at 100%,  I can no longer get
keyboard output... and this applies to any running application.
Its not been dropped or mistreated - its just stopped working. I have restarted the iMac but to no avail.
I am using the older USB Keyboard as a stop gap.
    My queries are;
         1. Has this keyboard just simply worn out or developed an internal fault ??
         2. Has anyone else experienced this or had similar problems ??
         3. Is there some way I can check the integrity of the BT or the Keyboards communications with the iMac ?
All help to solving this problem - will be most appreciated
Running Mac OSX 10.9.4 on Intel iMac (2CD) 8GB RAM

    Hi Barry.
    Thanks for your response.....
As mentioned I did restart the iMac which I believe also resets the PR (chime) during that  process.
However I will try specifically zapping the PR - several times like the old days and Mac OS 9.
    and come back to you

  • Bluetooth keyboard stops working

My bluetooth keyboard stops working while I use Photoshop CS4. It happened 4 days ago. I called applecare and they asked that I take the keyboard into a dealer. Keypad worked at the dealer. Brought it home and it worked.
When I pair the keyboard to bluetooth the keyboard functions, but in all other applications it doesn't. I think it must be the computer an not the keyboard.
    konabill

It's been a while but I am sure the issue lies with the bluetooth now. I did the SMC reset and the same issue only happened once since. This time I plugged in my logitech USB wireless mouse and it worked fine. I tried to disconnect my Apple bluetooth mouse and couldn't get it to connect again. I restarted the machine by clicking Apple->shut down->restart and when the computer restarted, neither the keyboard nor the mouse worked. I again used the Logitech wireless mouse to try to see my bluetooth setting. However I get the message of "bluetooth not available". I'm guessing my bluetooth unit in this new iMac isn't functioning properly. Any ideas or suggestions would be much appreciated.
    Thanks

  • Wireless Keyboard Will Not Pair With iMac

After installing Security Update 2007-007 and Pro Applicatiion Support 4.0.1 my wireless keyboard stopped being recognized by my computer. When I run my Bluetooth Setup Assistant it sees my keyboard but I can not pair it. I even installed new battteries in it thinking that was the problem. I had a brand new never used wireless keyboard in the closet which i got out and installed batteries in it and it will also not pair with my iMac. Any sugggestions will be greatly appreciated since I am stumped! Oh, my wireless mouse is working fine.

The model number is M9270LL/A (its the one that comes with the iMac). When the screen comes up and asks for you to enter a set of numbers to pair with the computer and I type the nembers on the keyboard I then receive an message that an error has occured. I try and try again to pair the keyboard to the computer with the same results. Thanks.
