Wireless LAN for SMB

Dear all,
My company planning to use WLAN instead of using LAN for the coming next few years.
I'm doing research on how and what to do if want to use WLAN in our company for around 100 users.
Appreciate if WLAN experts could provide some info needed.

My company planning to use WLAN instead of using LAN for the coming next few years.
Bad decision.  For the time being, you cannot replace wired LAN with wireless.
There's a major weakness with wireless LAN:  Wireless LAN behaves like a hub.  When one talks everyone else stops to listen and waits for their turn.
In a fully-wireless LAN environment one has to constantly monitor the state of your wireless APs:  contention ration between users to an AP, channel interferrence, signal strengths, etc.  Wired LAN and wireless LAN go hand-in-hand.  There are reasons why you want to use wireless and this is purely mobility.  If you are mostly sitting behind your desk, then wired is the way to go.
The reason why your company wants to go wireless is the cost to roll out a site with wired infrastructure.  We've tried this.  We've talked the clown who made this decision but he wasn't listening.  So what we did was take a step back, sold tickets and popcorn.  When the time came to turn this setup on, we just watched the fireworks go up.
Please consider this:  If you have a wired and wireless LAN and if your WLAN fails, what is your backup/fallback?  Your wired LAN right?  Ok.  Now if you are fully wireless LAN and you don't have wired LAN to your desktop and your WLAN fails.  What is your backup/fallback?

You need a wifi router. All the ones that I know will handle at least 10 users. Just setup the router and connect it to the internet if you want.

  • Best Practice for DHCP when Anchoring to a Guest Wireless LAN Controller

    Hi all,
I'm interested in the communities opinion in relation to DHCP provisioning when using auto-anchor/guest tunneling.
As far as I can tell, one cannot use the internal DHCP on the anchor controller when using auto-anchor due to incompatibility between the auto-anchor feature and DHCP Option 82.
    The scenario is as follows:
Guest controller is the anchor which provides Internet access to guests.
There is a foreign controller which is configured to anchor to the guest controller.
The internal DHCP server is configured on the guest anchor controller, therefore DHCP proxy must be enabled for DHCP to work.
    DHCP proxy enables Option 82.
The guidlines for guest tunneling state that DHCP Option 82 isn't supported. (Ref: Deploying and Troubleshooting Cisco Wireless LAN Controllers - Ch14)
So, the internal DHCP server requires DHCP proxy to be enabled; this in turn enables Option 82, which stops DHCP leases being made to clients connected to the foreign controller.
Given that a guest WLC would normally be placed in a DMZ, the internal DHCP server may often be the only DHCP solution available.
I look forward to hearing your opinions.
    Thanks
    Rhodri Jenkins

There are a couple of options here if you need to get proxy disabled
    1) pinhole with an ACL that allows dhcp to pass your internal servers
    2) run dhcp on a switch, router, or firewall in the dmz
    3) if you are using a cab,e modem or dsl for the guest users, you can let that do the dhcp
In general I've seen most of these in play, but I like option 2 myself

  • How to replace the certificate of Cisco 2106 wireless LAN controller for CAPWAP ?

I have interested in CAPWAP feature and I download the open capwap project to make Access Controller (AC) and Wireless Terminal Point (WTP). I had built the AC which used PC and WTP which used Atheros AP. The CAPWAP feature work well when I enabled the CAPWAP that used my own AC  and WTP. When I got the Cisco 2106 wireless LAN controller (Cisco WLC), I configured the Cisco WLC to instead my own AC but I got the authorize fail in Cisco WLC side. It seem the Cisco WLC could not recognize the CAPWAP message which sent form my own WTP. I think this issue just need to synchronize the certificate between Cisco WLC and WTP.So I need to replace the Cisco WLC's certificate manually. Does anyone know how to replace the certificate manually with Cisco WLC ?
    Best Regards,
    Alan

Unfortunately this Support Community is for Cisco Small Business & Small Business Pro product offerings.  The WLC2106 is a traditional Cisco product.  You can find this type of support on the Cisco NetPro Forum for all traditional Cisco products.

  • Seeking advice for Wireless LAN solution

I have a site that has a pipeyard in which I am considering covering with Wireless LAN. The transport vehicles that roam the pipeyard have terminals which currently use cellular cards & VPN to connect to an app server that is updated with stock that they move. The server is actually in an office adjacent to the pipeyard. The cellular coverage is poor and the connection drops are frustrating to the operators. For this reason, I am considering covering the area with Wireless LAN and replacing their cellular cards with 802.11a/b/g radios. The pipeyard has no obstructions. The area is outdoors and is about 122 acres in size.
Does anyone have suggestions about what Cisco solution could be applied to this pipeyard so that the mobile operators can maintain continuous connection to their server as they move about the yard?

For starters, you'll need to use mesh access points. You have the following choices:
Cisco Aironet 1520 Series Lightweight Outdoor Access Points

  • Cheaper solution for a 5508 wireless lan based

Hello, our wireless lan is based on a single 5508 (It's not HA). We would like to use a cheaper solution as a backup if this 5508 falls. Could 2504 works?
In short words, we have two RAP's that are connected in a hp switch and all ap's are connected to these rap's. Same for wlc, it's connected to switch

Have you checked Radio Shack? The staff are pretty knowledgeable about what you need to connect MBPs to TVs. Their cables are way less than $300.

  • Wireless LAN driver upgrade for Portege A100

My wireless LAN is Atheros AR 5001X+. I keep receiving upgrade notification from Toshiba for Intel Pro Wireless XXXX.
Can anyone help how to identify wich Intel driver I have to use for my system (Portege A100 with XP Pro)?
    Many thanks

    Hi Max
I wonder why you want to update the Intel WLan card driver.
According to your first message you use Atheros AR 5001X+ WLan card and not Intel WLan card. Please dont mix the Intel cards with Atheros cards.
Ps: if you want to check your Wlan card driver version you have to go to the device manager.
There you have to select the WLan card and access the properties (right click).

have you searched the forums? There are a bunch of threads on the ath9k module not working correctly with the latest kernel.
That's why it works in the live cd environment but stops working once you update and login to your actual installation.

  • Password Recovery for Wireless Lan controller

Hi, I am new to Wireless Lan Controller.
I just wanted to reset the password for the Controller. Can anybody help me with this. link/procedure anything will be appreciated.
    Thanks & Regards,
    Jvalin

I think they mean that they can not type "reset system" since they can't log in in the first place.
The key point to be made is that you need to restart the controller. So power it off if you can't login. Then console in to the controller and type "Recover-Config" as the username. This will default the configuration and allow you to start over with a new username/password.
There is no other password "recovery".

  • Oracle9iAS WE  Support for Wireless LAN Architecture?

    Hi All,
Here is one basic question. Does Oracle9iAS Wireless supports Wireless LAN Applications? if so how it could be. can some body provide references to this topic..waiting for the positive response
    thanks & regards

    Hi
I have goen through the FAQ which we refereed, but it has little information. stating that yes, there is a support but there is no prrof of concept or some additional information. and one more thing, can i use my cell phone with Wireless LAN to connect ASWE. if so what would be the Application type. which sort of applications would be preferable. it might be looking out of this domain, but if it includes in ASWE then it would be a intresting point to think of.
hoping for the positive reponse and thanks in advance

  • Wireless LAN update for Tecra M5

    Hi,
I've downloaded the latest wireless lan driver from Tosh, version 12.4.0.21.1 and expanded the zip for my Tecra M5, PTM51E.
When I double-click on setup.exe, I get an hourglass for a second and nothing more. Does anybody have any idea what may be inhibiting the program from running?
    Cheers.

    Hi
Im not quite sure why the exe file didnt start the WLan driver installation but why you dont update the Wlan driver in device manager?
Go to device manager, choose Update driver, then use the Advanced installation, point to the driver files stored on the HDD and finish the installation.
    This should work!

  • Wireless LAN Driver for Equium A210-1AS

    Hi
The Toshiba TEMPO system alerted me to a Wireless LAN Vista driver update for my Equium A210-1AS. I've downloaded it, but it's an Atheros driver, whereas the wireless connection properties show the wireless device to be a Realtek RTL8187B device, driver RTL8187B.sys.
It's not exactly obvious why an Atheros driver would be relevant.
    Any suggestions?

Reverse the Atheros WLan driver installation and use the preinstalled one.
I agree with Mores. Dont update anything if your notebook runs great.
By the way; some A210 notebook were equipped with the Atheros WLan card and therefore you have received such update.
I think you should take a look firstly on your notebook before doing any updates

  • Looking for hardware (PCI Wireless LAN)

I'm looking for a PCI Wireless LAN card that will work well with Linux, does anyone know of any place that documents this sort of thing? (as in a list)

Euphoric Nightmare wrote:Okay, just figured out i can't use pci, because there are no slots available...fucking dells...i'll have to look at some other options
I think it's other option, singular - as in USB? I recently had to switch wifi to USB myself, when my laptop's card slots died. After a bit of research, I went for the prism2 chipset with the wlan-ng driver - specifically, the Netgear MA111. It's all working fine now, but in retrospect, I'd probably go for something that works better with wireless_tools.
AFAICS, there aren't any stable drivers for 802.11g over USB - madwifi may or may not do it, depending on Atheros, prism54 is trying, and they have pre-alpha stuff available for the brave/foolish, and there's also the zd1211 project on sourceforge.
