Wireless Max SSID on WLC and AP

Hi,
I'm using a NME-AIR-WLC6-K9, Software Version 7.0.235.3.
I have 6x Access Points AIR-LAP1142N.
The limitation on the WLC is only 16 SSIDs, I'm not sure what the AP is capable of max SSID broadcast. Does any one have this information?
My question, is there a way of expanding the controller to allow for more WLAN? Our floor would like to use another SSID on top of the 16 already configured.
Thanks

The limitation on the WLC is only 16 SSIDs,
Each AP can broadcast a maximum of 16 SSID and nothing more.  You can configure a WLC with more than 16 SSID.
When you say AP/WLAN Groups would be a more efficient means of providing SSIDs per location, is there a Cisco document explaining this and how it will work. We provide services to our clients by providing SSID on a floor with roaming service any where within the Wifi coverage. Right now, due to the limitations of 16 SSIDs on a WLCM (SRE-710) we have ran into problems. I notice that other Cisco products such as Virtual Controller (small to mid scale) and Wireless Appliance Servers (mid to large scale) provides 512 WLANs.
Wow.  Someone's over-complicated your WLAN network.  That ain't going to be good at all.
How many clients do you provide WLAN service?  Like what Eric said, with AP Groups you can do the following scenario:
Client A and B have three SSIDs each with the 3rd SSID as "Guest".
APs inside client A premises will broadcast SSID A1, A2 and A3.
APs inside cient B premises will broadcast SSID B1, B2 and B3.
In the foyer area, you can have an AP broadcasting only A3 and B3.
Very doable and this is what the main selling point of AP Groups.
With a newer WLC, like the 2504, 5508 and the WiSM-2, you can even specify the data rates for each AP groups.  So you can say that A3 and B3 will only broadcast in 802.11 g.

  • Difference in client tables between WLC and AP controller d0

    Hello gang,
Anyone know whether its normal to have an APs' d0/d1 controller output show clients that don't appear on the WLC's "sh client <AP>" output?
Here's an example - 10 clients visible from a "sh client " on the controller, but 15 clients visible on AP4s "sh controller d0" debug.
Granted the User Idle Timeout has been bumped up to 7200 seconds, but shouldn't the AP's d0/1 client table get updated if/when a client roams to another AP nonetheless? Wouldn't this otherwise cause confusion? Is the Split-MAC Split-brained?
    Thanks for your input,

    hi Leo,
I tested this out, but i guess its not working as i thought it would work. I configured the backup primary controller IP and name in the global configuration of the Wireless tab of the WLC and left the AP high availability blank with no settings. I joined the AP to the WLC and show capwap client ha output on the AP shows the backup primary controller name. but if i shut down the primary controller, the AP does not join the back, it just tries to get WLC ip by renewing DHCP forever and stuck in that...   below are the outputs.. any idea why its like this ? I thot if there is no HA configured at the AP level, the global config on the controller level should take effect ?

  • Using exisiting wireless network SSID name and settings

I want to use an existing wireless network SSID and settings as i setup my new airport time capsule.  I plan to turn off the wireless network at the Westell modem/router that now establsihes the network.  what setting do i pick in airport utility?  : extend a wirless network or steup a new wireless network?
When should i turn off the wirelss at the Westell router?  Before or after running airport utility?

Establish a permanent Ethernet cable connection from one of the LAN <-> ports on the Westell router to the WAN "O" port on the Time Capsule.
Configure the Time Capsule to "create a wireless network" using the same settings for the Time Capsule network as the Westell.
Make sure that the Time Capsule has been configured to operate in Bridge Mode to work correctly with the Westell router.
Once you have the Time Capsule set up and working, you can turn off the wireless function on the Westell router.

  • Problem share folder WLC and pc macbookpro

I am doing a migration from my wireless network in the old network in the PC MacBookPro I can see shared files on the network. But when I connect to the SSID configured on the WLC and I can not see shared files on the network. I have no ACL configured on the SSID.

Bonjour is a non-routabe multicast based service. A trick I use sometimes is to configure the WLAN to be in hreap mode if the ap is located locally to the target bonjour device.if your running in local mode, make sure they are on the same vlan and global multicast is enabled.

  • Max. number of WLCs per WCS

    Hi,
I know this is a fairly basic question but I can't find answer in WCS Q&A's etc.
I'm looking at a deployment where there will be many small sites with only 5 or 6 APs and a 2106 WLC. Each site will be in a different mobility group.
I know WCS licensing counts APs, but is there a max. number of WLCs?
    Thanks, MH

    Hi Mark,
The supported number of WLC's per WCS is based on the WCS Platform used :)
    Minimum server requirements
    Cisco WCS High-End Server

  • Round trip time is more with wireless phone SSID

    Hi,
We have separate SSID for data and voip in our wireless network.
I have connected my laptop to wi-phone SSID and gave a ping to other laptop IP on same SSID. The round trip time is around 707ms. Sometimes it is reaching more than 1000 ms.
When i connect to my data SSID, the round trip time is very very less around 3 tp 4 ms.
When I try to ping to a phone which is on call, the round trip time is around 50 ms.
Please suggest on how to resolve this issue. Please let me know, if any configuration related information is required.
    Regards,
    Madhan kumar G

it could be due to power-save enabled on those laptops. Disable it and try.
disable/enable wmm on laptop and try.
Try pinging the phone at off call you may experience high RTT when it is not on call.
ping on WLC is handled as best effort. try file transfer or iperf/jperf.
what's the client(s) rssi and snr when you test.
If the above didn't help check config between the WLANs in question.

  • Binding multiple VLANs to single SSID on WLC

I have a building with over 4000 users and would like to bind multiple VLANs for user access to a single SSID in WLC. Can this be done? I would rather not have 4000 wireless users on a single VLAN.

the question is tough. You can not use the SSID in on AP for multiple vlans. Once you assign the AP to the vlan then you will have to make all traffic in the vlan. With that being said. you could assign the AP's to specific vlans, but if you roam from one vlan to another you will have problems at L3. But you can use WDS to make that happen.

  • Wireless DMZ with foreign wlc - EoIP - anchor wlc

    Hi,
We are trying to setup a a segregated DMZ wireless network.
I've attached a simple topology to illustrate. So we have foreign controller and anchor controller. Firewall ports UDP16666,16667 and IP97 have been enabled and EoIP tunnel itself is up.
The client is also able to connect to the TEST ssid and obtain IP address from the DHCP server. But the client can't reach the gateway or any other network. The client's gateway is the firewall where the Anchor is connected.
Does anyone have experience setting up EoIP tunnels and DMZ wireless? What could be the issue?
I've been reading the Cisco guide and searching all over the internet without any success.
    Any help will be appreciated.
    Regards,
    Delgee

    Doesn't look like your tunnel
Is working. If you didn't open up dhcp from the DMZ to the dhcp server and back, the clients should not be able to get a dhcp address. Look to make sure the mobility is up between the foreign and the anchor. Also you should see the client on both the foreign and the anchor. The WLAN SDID's also need to be exactly the same for e caption of the interface and you need to anchor the foreign SSID to the anchor wlc and the anchor wlc SSID to itself.
Review this doc as it e plains what needs to be done on both WLCs

  • WLC and Splash Page

    Hello all,
I have a 3502 ap connected to a 2100 WLC, I want to create and SSID with wpa/wpa2 with psk authentication. Cisco duomentation shows that it is not possible as it fllas back to 802.1x auth.
is there a way to create an ssid with psk and a splash page that shows company service agreement with only a button that shows I accept these terms?
    Thank you all

    Hi,
If i understand correctly: you want to have a WLAN with WPA/WPA2 -PSK and webauth page with term and condition and you want that user just click on agree button and get connection.
Yes you can create a SSID with WPA/WPA2-psk.

  • Help required to implement Cisco 2504 WLC and 1042 Access Points

    Hi,
My name is Vidya Sagar. I am new to Wireless technology. We are planning to implement Wireless in our office. I have given the requirements below. Kindly go through the details and let me know how to start.
We have purchased Cisco 2504 Wireless Controller (One) and Ciscon 1042 Access Points (Five). At present I am going to use 3 access points only.
I have attached a simple diagram of our office network. We have more than 30 VLANs configured in Core Switch, we are planning to give wifi access to only 3 VLANs.
    1. VLAN 121 ( IP Segment - 10.52.121.0 /24)
    2. VLAN 116 ( IP Segment - 10.52.116.0 /24)
    3. VLAN 100 ( IP Segment - 192.168.100.0 /24) (Guest)
Please give me a implementation plan to do this. I would like to use LDAP or ACS for authentication purpose.
    Regards,
    Vidya Sagar

Lets just do this simple first before you start using ACS as that will require a certificate installed on the ACS for using PEAP.
So first off, the WLC we will say is in vlan 10. When you are going through the startup wizard, make sure you define the vlan tag to 10 on the management interface. Make sure your virtual interface is an IP address that is not routed in your network, like an out of band IP.
Make sure the WLC time is correct or use NTP!!!!
Now you should be able to http or https to the WLC. I would upgrade the code to v7.4 and install the FUS image. Please reference this link for the upgrade procedure. You don't have to upgrade now... I would wait till you get everything working first.

Now I would connect the APs on the same vlan as the WLC for now. Make sure there is dhcp on that subnet. Once the APs have joined, then you can move them to any subnet you want. Since you don't have many APs it would be okay to leave them in the same vlan as the WLC management or out them on any other vlan you choose. The APs will be connected to an access port NOT a trunk port!!!!
The WLC will need to be connected on a dot1q trunk port only allowing vlans 10,100,116,121. The 2504 running v7.4 will support LAG (etherchannel). Any ways, your switch port should look like this for example only
    Interface gigabit1/0/1
    description WLC2504
    switch port trunk encapsulation dot1q
    switchoort mode trunk
    switch trunk allowed vlans 10,100,116,121
    spanning-tree portfast trunk
channel-mode group 10 mode on << only for v7.4 if you use lag
Don't connect all four ports right now, just port one!!!!
Your Guest vlan, you will need to create an ACL to block traffic from accessing the internal network. You might want to allow dhcp and DNS bit I would leave it open first until you can verify everything is working.
Now on the WLC you need to create a dynamic interface for vlan 100, 116, and 121. If you click on the Controller tab in the GUI and click on interfaces on the left hand side, that will take you to where you can add/delete/modify your interfaces. When creating these interfaces, make sure you add the dhcp server IP address for the primary and or backup.
Now that you have your dynamic interfaces created, its time I create your SSID. Now click on the WLAN tab on the GUI and click on WLAN and then on the too right select Create New and then click go. Select WLAN on the drop down menu and then for the profile name I would use the SSID name also for simplicity.lean e the WLAN id to 1 for this and 2 for the next and so on. After defining these and clicking Apply you can now define your SSID. On the General tab, enable the status and leave the radio policy to all for now, you can decide later what you want to use. Choose your interface you wan to place this SSID on and enable Broadcast SSID for now and leave everything else alone. Now click on the Security tab and on the layer 2 Security, leave it at WPA + WPA2, only check WPA2 Policy and for WPA2 encryption choose AES only. Now go to the bottom of that screen and choose PSk. We will do pre shared key for now so you get to understand the setup and make sure everything is working first. Now on the PSK format, choose ASCII and put your pre shared key in the input box. Make this simple to for testing. You don't want to put in symbols or anything like that. When you are don with that, check apply on the top right and test.
Now you can repeat this with your other SSIDs just to test. Your guest network you can leave open for now to test open authentication.

Well that is it, hopefully you can get the wireless up for testing and verifying everything works!

  • How to execute "netsh wlan connect SSID", but SSID has space and quotation marks?

    Dear all:
I have a wifi roruter with SSID test "3"
But when I execute following command netsh wlan connect "test \"3\""
the netsh reply: 未將設定檔 "test " 指派給指定的介面。
Sorry my windows7 is chinese version, but as you can see, netsh detect my SSID as
    test, not test "3".
Does everybody know how to use netsh to connect to a SSID, and these SSID has space and quotation mark both?
    Regards,
    Joseph

    Hi Joseph,
Firstly, please modify your SSID name to make sure it do not contain spaces or special characters. SSID name is the router setting. please go there to change SSID name.
In addition, If only one SSID is specified in the profile, then the specified SSID is used to connect, and the ssid parameter is not required. If the profile specifies multiple SSIDs, the ssid parameter is required.
Therefore, I would like to suggest you run command as this syntax:
netsh wlan conncet ssid=Your SSID of the unsecured wireless network name=Your current profile name
To do this, please refer to the section “connect” in the following document:
Netsh Commands for Wireless Local Area Network (WLAN) Preliminary

  • Touchsmart Computer not recognizing Wireless N SSID at 5GHz

I have two HP Touchsmart 600-1105xt computers running Windows 7 x64. I have a 802.11n wireless LAN card with Bluetooth and according to system information it is Ethernet 802.3 PCI and the manufacturer is Rankin Technologies. I recently bought a Netgear WNDR 3300 dual band high performance router. The router setup was easy and I set SSID for 5GHz and 2.4GHz. So far, I can only see the 2.4GHz SSID on either computer and can connect just fine, but I cannot see the 5GHz SSID on either computer. I have gone through the Netgear manual and adjusted settings with no solution.
I checked Device Manager and the Network Adapter properties. The Advanced Tab has the following settings:
    Adhoc Support 802.11n: disable
    Country Region 2.4GHz: #0 (1-11)
    Country Region 5GHz: #7 (36-165)
    IEEE802.11H: Disable
    Multimedia/Gaming Environment: Disable
    Power Saving Mode: Max_PSP
    Radio ON/OFF: Enable
This indicates to me that my wireless N adapters are capable of both 2.4 and 5GHz on wireless N.
Anything I can do to be able to see both the 5GHz and 2.4 GHz SSIDs?

I have the same exact problem , same wireless card and settings and have been trying to solve it. My PC is 3 weeks old and HP technical support said they can fix it but because it is a "network specialty" problem they want to charge me for their service. No way will I pay, 1. I have a 2 year warranty and 2. brand new out of the box should be 100% operable. Anyway if you find a solution, please email me at [email protected] and I will reciprocate if you forward me your email.
For now trying to get HP to honor their responsibility has been unsuccessful.
