Wireless mic suggestions for podcast

I am interested in video podcasting. I have a sony high def video camera but I want a wireless mic that doesn't cost a thousand dollars. I do not want to hold a handheld--it won't look professional. Any suggestions ? Thank you

you can take a look at the USB mics here:
http://www.bulletsandbones.com/GB/Microphones.html
but the low end model would probably be a step up only because it won't pick up the HD and fan noises of the computer, if you can swing $79, the middle one should get nicer sound

  • Need Mic suggestions for solo guitar video...

I have a Sony TRV-38 mini DV and need suggestions for an external mic. I want to video a solo guitar player sitting in a chair. Would I need to mic the guitar from a mic stand in front of him or would some sort of shotgun mic do the trick? Would buying a Beachtek unit be the best way to go, or is there a simpler/cheaper mic alternative that gives very good results. This is primarily just for good sounding archival footage.
    Thanks for any help.

there are a couple of approaches... you can close mic, but if you are experimenting with your equipment and techniques, it is quite possible that you could get a very colored tone and not accurately depict the performace from a sonic standpoint.
something that is quick, easy, and relatively high performance at a budget is to use an M-S stereo shotgun mic. the left channel will be mono hypercardoid aimed right at the performer... with the mic mid range, not close mic'd. the right channel will be the "-S" component of the stereo signal, which is optional and can be decoded with an M-S stereo process in the edit process, or if for example, there was too much ambient noise, simply discard the track and just use the left / mono signal. (personally, i would probably just mount my audio technica M-S stereo mic on my rycote hotshoe adapter, and mic camera mounted... no stands or cables to deal with)
yes, the beachtek or similiar direct interface is the way to go, bypassing the Sony's poor gain stages (disable auto gain control, if possible).
IF sound quality is of the utmost importance, then the real correct way to do this would be to record with 2 mics in an X-Y stero mid field setup. expense, complexity, and possibility of getting something wrong are probably too high to do for something as critical as a 1 take live event if you don't have experience under your belt.

  • Mic choice for podcasting in GB3

I'm assembling hardware to create a podcast and am having a heck of a time finding a microphone that will work with GarageBand 3 and a PowerBook G4. Regardless of whether I plug the mic directly into the input or into iMic and then FireWire, the levels produced barely register in System Preferences/Sound or in GB and are way too low. I'm able to boost the vocals somewhat in GB, but the resulting hiss is unacceptable.
I'm using an Audio-Technica Pro24 stereo mic rated at 600 ohms. Could the problem be that even with iMic, I need a mic with higher impedence?
Is the best solution to buy an amplifier?

Since your PowerBook has a Line-In I'd suggest a better solution than an iMic would be a small mixer like the Behringer UB502 Eurorack Mixer for about $30. It will give you a lot more control over the levels.

  • Mic recommendations for podcasting?

I have a client that wants to create good quality audio files for his customers. I read the review for Apogee which seems to favor music but not voice as much.
Any other models that we should be looking at?
    Thanks

I have a Apogee MiC that I've used to mic up everything from guitar cabs to vocals. It does everything well I'm sure it will do podcasting just fine. It comes with a short cord I ordered the optional 3 meter cord.
Also check out the Blue Yeti mics. Very popular with podcasters and musicians.

  • Poping sound using wireless mic, filter for it in fcp hd 4.5?

I'm using fcp 4.5 hd on a mac, I have a canon gl2 video camera and a sony wcs 999 wireless microphone system hooked up to it. This evening I did an interview and while it was going on it was making popping sounds through the ear piece . Is there a filter through fcp 4.5 hd that will remove the popping sound. Thanks for all your help.

ok this is normal with ALL audio editing programs
to better explain what a zero crossing is check this wiki page
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zero_crossing
basically it can create a click or snap if there is a RAPID (ie straight line) gain change (increase in height of the waveform)
if you cut at the zero crossing there is no signal thus no sound
if you normalize or increase the gain AFTER you have cut NOT at the zero crossing it will increase the snap/zip/click (the bad sound)
programs like STP have button's to increase the vertical zoom
load a clip into the audio editor in STP and zoom in close into a quiter part of the audio, see how it is all around the middle (where the slightly darker line is) . . . that is the zero crossing of the waveform (also has the handly 0 on the vertical scale/messure bar on the left hand side)
now go to the menu VEIW>INCREASE VERTICAL ZOOM (apple+)
    hit it ONCE
notice your waveform looks bigger but sounds the same
you didn't increase the gain you just vertically zoomed into the waveform (check the scale bar on the left hand side and you will notice that the top number is no longer 1.0 but 0.6 (or some other number smaller then 1)
you can keep zooming in till 0.10 is the top number (at least on my screen)
THAT IS ZOOMED in REALLLY close so be carful what you hit
now zoom (regular zoom) all the way in you see your waveform has a bunch of boxes in it those are the actual samples of audio.
now I woudn't recomend working at 0.10 vertical zoom as that is REALLY extreme (I normally work at 0.50 at most)
one other option would be to select where you want to cut and then go to the menu EDIT>ADJUST SELECTION TO ZERO CROSSING> (then select which options works best for you situation)
it will select the closest spot that has a zero crossing (on both waveforms if it is a stereo clip
    anyway hope that helps

  • Mic suggestions for recording guitar/voice over the air?

    Hey Folks,
I have an acoustic guitar and would like to buy a mic that would do a decent job of recording both the guitar and my voice. Is there anything in the $50 or less price range? As you can tell, I'm not serious, but would like something a step up from the internal mic.
    Thanks!

  • Podcast with wireless mic for Church

Our church is wanting to podcast the Sunday sermons. But the pastor uses a wireless mic. How can we get the sound into the Garageband? He does not stay in one place where he can speak into a stationary mic. He walks around alot.

since the mic has to broadcast somewhere (a PA), take a line-out of the pa and plug it into the line-in on the mac.

is there an EASY way to submit podcasts to the itunes store? i've tried creating podcasts in garageband, then somewhere after wordpress  itunes  doesn't recognize the feed.
my process has been (i am open to suggestions for other free and EASY services/methods):
garageband : create & edit audio. add 1400x1400 image.
    share to itunes.
    drag file to desktop.
upload .m4a file to google drive.
create a link post in wordpress using "podcast" tag & create "podcast" category.
click on "entries rss" in wordpress, which takes me to the rss subscribe page (which is basically just my wordpress address with "/feed" at the end.
    i copy this url.
go to itunes store > then "submit a podcast"
itunes gives me the error message "we had difficulty downloading episodes from your feed."
when i try to subscribe to my podcast in itunes, it does, but gives me no episodes available.
i went back into wordpress and changed settings/ reading settings to : "full text" from "summary"
    still the same error message.
i added a feedburner step after wordpress but got the same errors. i don't think i should have to add feedburner.
wordpress seems to be encapsulating the rss, what am i doing wrong?
this so much easier when you could go directly from garage band to iweb to mobileme; i miss those apple days (also idisk).

if anyone has a super EASY process, i would LOVE to know what it is. EASY, meaning no html and also free. there are many free online storage systems available, many of which i currently use. the above process was just me trying to figure it out, if you have an easier method, please share. thank you so much!

  • Suggestions for Cable Modem and Wireless Router

    Hey everyone!
I have the new iMac and would like to have a faster wireless router. Currently using an old D-Link Wireless G router and would like something like the Time Capsule (as it has Airport Extreme in it) or Netgear Rangemax Dual Band Wirless-N Gigabit Router. My problem is, my Internet is through my cable company, so it comes into the house as a cable connection. It appears that these two combos would still require the use of a cable modem.
Any suggestions to keep the equipment down to one piece? If not, any suggestions for a cable modem so I can return this old one to the cable company?
What would be the best/quickest wireless router?
    Thanks for your help!
    Message was edited by: saalbunch

Go to your ISP's web site and do a search from your ISP for compatible cable modems. Then buy the capable modem your ISP says that is comp[atible. On the new cable modem find the Serial number & MAC address, make then call your ISP tech help desk and tell them the new modem you got and he/she will ask you that information. When the ISP tech says they can see/ping that new cable modem then it will work. Then connect a new cheaper Airport Extreme and any external USB2 hard drive to connect to that new Airport Extreme. I say this because Apple put out and Update a little while ago that will allow an external connected to an Extreme as a Time Machine disk.
PS: Remember the old trick of checking you Ethernet cables. I can't count how times I have seen professionals install all new high speed switches, routers, etc. and wonder why no speed is seen. Then after numerous trouble shooting they discover they used the old 10 Base T cables and just changing the cable solved their problem.
Just make sure you do this one at a time starting with getting the ISP compatible cable modems list to know what cable modem you can buy (to save that monthly ISP rental fee). Then you can get the going as long as so speak with your ISP tech to give them that new cable modem Serial number and MAC address so they can register it with their servers.
This will be to easy as long as you do things in step.

  • I'd like to buy an all-one print, scan, fax wireless laser printer for my Mac.  Any suggestions?

Any suggestions for a laser all-one, wireless, print, scan, fax printer for my Mac Air?
    Suggestions gratefully accepted.

Yes printers (their drivers mostly) can become obsolete. Laser printers are so inexpensive I would lean that direction (often new ink cost more than a new printer). That being said when you combine functions you make sacrifices. A laser printer/fax would be, in my opinion, the way to go. If you need a scanner I would make it separate.
I have had good luck with HP - the school district I worked for also used (standardized) to HP. At times Epson has worked well with Mac's - and then there are other times. I think as long as you stay with a top tier brand (look at what Apple is bundling with their new sales) you'll be all right.
Of course you budget, the number of times you expect to scan, fax and print should drive the decision.
I have a ~$100 Brother Laser Printer networked through my Mac Pro (it prints wirelessly) and has done so for going on 10 years. I have an HP Photosmart 6800 about the same age. As you can tell I'm not a fan of AIO's.

I need a wireless usb adaptor for a Power Mac G4... any suggestions? (needs to be compatible)

With Mac OS X 10.3 or higher, a number of USB Wi-Fi adapters would be possible to use. However, for an earlier operating system, a wireless Ethernet bridge (such as the examples below) can be a better (and sometimes the only) option. A wireless Ethernet bridge does not normally require special drivers, and can thus be used with almost any Ethernet-equipped computer.

Is there really that much of a difference in
bandwidth speed between Firewire 400 and USB 2.0?
You'd have to do some web research to get solid numbers. I know what I've read, and experienced, and FireWire moves more data more easily. On paper, I believe USB 2.0 is speced to be faster (480mbs vs 400mbs), but with FireWire handling all it's own smarts in moving data, it just does a better job in the REal World.
guess I didn't think that with USB, bandwidth would
be something to consider, unless you are talking
Firewire 800 which most machines don't come with.
My opinion is that it really depends how far you are going to push the machine and GB. I'm working on a 52 or 53 track project, I need every bit and every cycle I can get (and it's playing fine via my FireWire drive)
I have to admit, I am kind of curious now ... maybe when I get a chance I'll try copying the project to a USB drive and see if it can still play it. If it can, perhaps the difference is small enough that it doesn't matter. Probably the REAL test, which I'm doubtful I'll tackle, would be pushing the project to just the point where it will play from the FW drive (iow, one more track and it can't), and then move that to the USB drive. Not perfectly scientific (fragmentation could be an issue, etc), but it would be interesting to try.
On the USB/Firewire using CPU issue, that I didn't
think about. I guess in some situations it might be
an issue, but again, for audio podcasting I just
    didn't take that into consideration.
Yeah, for a PodCast, how many tracks are you REALLY going to create, half dozen tops? Maybe a few more for special-special effects, but they won't be playing through the entire cast, so, agreed, it's not likely to be an issue on a small project.
As far as one being better, or "cleaner" as an input
device, have there been any tests and results posted
on this? I would like to see that if there were.
The bus is not going to make a difference. All USB and FireWire are doing is moving the data, not changing it. Th quality comes from the Mic PREs and line-level preamps, the A/D converters, the mic you're using (the room...)
Thanks for your knowledge on all this.

  • Anyone have a suggestion for wireless headphones

Anyone have a suggestion for wireless headphones that would allow more than one pair? Using iphone as video server in car, need individual headsets for 3 kids.

  • Bluetooth Lav Microphone for podcasting lectures

    Hi,
I'm going to record my lectures as podcasts this year. However, when i teach i don't stand behind a lecturn and mic. So, is there a (cheap) wireless solution, such as a bluetooth lav mic? The audio quality doesn't matter much. I could just use the built in laptop mic, but i'm not sure how much of my voice (and background noise) would be picked up. Any advice would be appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Grant.

I have been doing this sort of thing now for over a year. The mic is the hardest part...if you do move around a fair amount, you do need a wireless mic. Forget bluetooth, I was hoping for the same thing. The head-set option is one (for mobile phones), but the range is not very good, and the sound atrocious. A very good audio-quality for a relatively low price is this solution
    NADY wireless lapel
    http://www.dak.com/reviews/2030story.cfm?Ref=G&PM=WM&type=GSrch&Srh=wireless_mic rophone
This is the next level (much better value)
    Samson Stage 5 Lavalier
    http://www.americanmusical.com/item--i-SAM-SW05SLM5--m-0254933.html
Then it gets really expensive, so I spare you that...
The built-in mic is not that bad, actually - you just need to be not too far from the Mac and crank it all up. The down-side is ALL the background noise gets picked up big time, which doesn't make for good listening over headphones.
So the lavalier is your best shot.
Be absolutely sure to check out (and I strongly recommend using) ProfCast http://www.profcast.com . This has saved me hours of work and does a wonderful job at producing a real "lecture experience" that students really appreciate. The lecture together with the slides exactly the way they see them in class! In the latest version you can even take screen shots when you browse the web or show other things. It's simply amazing (and no, unfortunately I am not affiliated with them or get some kickbacks
    Hope that helps!
