Wireless Modem v's Airport Express

HELP..I connect to my service provider via a wireless modem located away from the G5 (that works). .Now have two Airport Express for streaming to different parts of the house (they work). BUT:
1. I cant use wirless modem and Airport Express toghther (have to move from one to the other)
2. Cant use both Airport Express's together at the same time (BTW one is green the other blinks amber)
Would like to be able to use everything together at the same time..ideas/help very much appreciated
charlie

thanks for the help..did all you suggested but when i
got as far as choose airport base station nothing was
displayed...
Well, as long as the booting sequence has finished (amber light is flashing slowly) the AE should be visible. You need to make sure that when you push the reset button the amber light is flashing rapidly, otherwise the AE will keep the old settings and will not be recognised by the Setup Assistant as new.
Let's try to do an illustrated guide.
1. Reset both AEs and unplug them.
2. Plug the first one in.
3. Launch Airport Setup Assistant.
4. Select "Setup new station"
5. The assistant should be able to see a new AE station:
and then you can click continue. If it does not see the station, unplug it and plug close to your G5 to guarantee you have a strong signal, and relaunch Airport Setup Assistant. You will be able to unplug it later and move to where you want it, and it will keep all the settings.
6. Hopefully now you were able to get to step 5 and click "continue". At the next step you will need to select to connect to existing network:
7. At the next step you will tell it to connect to the network as a client, rather than extend it through WDS. WDS is a whole new problem, so we'll pass it for now:
8. Next you should be presented with the menu containing the name of the network that you wireless modem has created. Select it and enter the password. Also give a unique name to your AE station.
9. The setup is finished with assigning a password for the AE. This has nothing to do with the wireless network, it's just to protect the settings you just entered.
10. The AE should reboot with the new settings now. This time as it will first glow steady amber, then will do a few amber flashes as it looks for the modem's network, and will finally change to steady green when it gets connected to the modem.
Now you can unplug it and move to where you want it. Repeat steps 2-10 for the second AE.
Hope this helps, especially plugging the AE close to the computer for the setup. One ting to keep in mind, is that the AE will connect to the modem now, rather than your G5, so the modem's signal strength should be sufficient where the AEs are.

How can I extend a wirelss network from a 2Wire modem using an Airport Express? Some years ago using the old Express I was able to do so simply by plugging on the Express witha minimum of tweaking. Still the same?
    TIA

    Still the same?
    Unfortunately, no.
Apple's newer "Extend a wireless network" feature was designed to only work with other Apple products, so it would be extremely unlikely that it would work with a 2-Wire device if you plan to extend using wireless only.
If you plan to connect the AirPort Express to the 2-Wire device using a wired Ethernet connection, the Express can be configured to provide more wireless coverage that way.

No, you connect to your Time Capsule wirelessly to "Extend" the network..

  • Unable to create a wireless network with my airport express.  Please help!

I am trying to setup a wireless network with an airport express, and connect to it with my Macbook. I just bought both of these and haven't been able to get wireless to work.
I initially plugged the ethernet cable from my cable modem into the airport express and plugged it into the wall. The macbook detected it when I opened airport utility, but the express had a flashing amber light and I was unable to connect. I then unplugged the express and re-started the cable modem. This time, the airport express showed a solid green light -which should mean that it is working correctly. However, the macbook did not find the airport express device when i searched for it using airport utility. I am able to connect the macbook directly to the cable modem, after re-starting the modem, and access the internet so at least some of the systems are go.
Any ideas? Thanks in advance for your help.

Is the issue that you cannot access the 802.11n AirPort Express Base Station (AXn) with the AirPort Utility that is running on your Win7 PC? ...  or that once you have configured the AXn, the PC is unable either to find the new wireless network or can find it but cannot connect to it?

  • Can you hook up a Lacie Wireless Space to an Airport Express as a client?

    Hello,
I haven't gotten much help from Lacie on this, but has anyone here managed to hook up a LaCie Wireless space to their Airport Express created wireless network?
I can hook up the Airport Express to a Lacie created network, but not the other way around.
I want to be able to hook up the Lacie as client in case I ever want or need to upgrade my router.
According to Lacie, I should be able to do this, but they haven't been able to tell me how.
If you know the Airport settings I need to have for this, please let me know.

The AirPort Express can "join" virtually any wireless network for use with AirTunes or a remote printer.
    But....
The AirPort Express can only "extend" or "repeat" a wireless network from another Apple router.

  • I am unable to join my existing wireless network with new AirPort Express

I am unable to join my existing wireless network with new AirPort Express.
I am using a DLink DI-524 Router, Windows 7 (64), and the AirPort Express.
AirPort Utility will not recognize the AEX wirelessly, it will only recognize it when it is connected by Ethernet. I can then configure the AEX and verify that the settings stick once disconnected and then reconnected. However, even after that, it will not recognize the AEX once disconnected from the Ethernet cable.
I followed the suggestions of several other threads on these forums. But I am unable to get the AEX to work.
    Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.

    Welcome to the discussion area!
It's almost always a security setting that causes problems when the Airport Express (AX) tries to join a third party wireless network. The AX usually does not "join" correctly and that's why you can't see it on your wireless network using AirPort Utility.
Using an ethernet cable is still the more reliable way to configure and adjust the AX, but if you are want to try to configure it using wireless, you must return the AX back to factory defaults as follows:
    Power down the AX
Hold in the reset button +and keep holding it in+ as you plug the AX back in to power
Release the reset button after 10 seconds
When it is set to factory defaults, the AX broadcasts a wireless signal with a network name like "apple network xxxxxx" where the "x's" are either letters or numbers. You must look for this network by clicking on the fan shaped Airport icon at the top of the screen. If you don't see this network, then click Join Other Network to search that way. Unless you connect to this network, you will not be able to configure the AX using wireless.
Do you know the exact security type that your D-Link router is using? That is the key element in the process.
Open AirPort utility, click Manual Setup
Click the Base Station tab to establish a name for the AX, device password and adjust time zone settings
    Click the Wireless tab
    Wireless Mode....Join a wireless network
Wireless Network Name...must exactly match your D-Link wireless network name
Enable ethernet clients if you want the port to be active (your D-Link must be compatible with ProxySTA for this to work)
Wireless Security...exact setting of the D-Link network. WEP security causes a lot of issues. Try to use WPA/WPA2 Personal, which is far more secure.
Wireless Password...must match the D-Link network
Click the Music icon to enable AirTunes
    Click Update to save settings
    Any luck?

When it was originally released it only worked with the MacBook Air which came with a special version of OS X that supported this adapter. Apple seem to have since built this support in to versions of OS X 10.6 and later for all Macs.
If you have an older version of OS X e.g. 10.3 to 10.5 then an unofficially driver is available here http://www.sustworks.com/sb_site/downloads.html
There are also third-party USB to Ethernet adapters with their own drivers like this one http://www.kanexlive.com/usb3lan

  • Can I extend my network by connecting one of my airport express devices to my airport extreme via an ethernet cable? I have CAT5 cable throughout my house but have a wireless network w/ 3 airport expresses

Can I extend my wireless network by connecting one of my airport express devices to my airport extreme via an ethernet cable?  I have a wireless network with 3 airport expresses and 1 airport extreme functioning as the base station. I have CAT5 throughout my house.

    Welcome to the discussions, mib88!
Can I extend the network a second time with another Airport Express...
The short answer would be no. If you want more details, please continue to the next paragraph.
Apple's "extend a wireless network" works just like the hub and spokes of a wheel. Your main hub is either the Time Capsule or the AirPort Extreme and the AirPort Express is at the end of a spoke. You can add more devices at the ends of other spokes, but these devices will communicate directly to the hub, not to another device at the end of a spoke.
Apple does offer an option which is is known as a "static WDS", which can consist of a "main", "relay" and "remote" device. The problem here is that this type of setup has two huge drawbacks:
    1) All of your faster "n" devices will drop down to much slower "g" speeds
    2) The bandwidth or speed capability on the network will drop down to only 25% of the original bandwidth with a "main", "relay" and "remote" on the network.
Don't think you want this on your network. Your best option is to connect the new AirPort Express to the "hub" using an ethernet connection. If you can't run the ethernet cable, take a look at a pair of ethernet powerline adapters to accomplish the same task by sending the ethernet signal over the AC powerline in your home.

I have a Netgear wndr3400 and I can "join a wireless network" but can not "extend a wireless network" on my Airport express.  Does anyone know why?

Sorry, but "Extend a wireless network" is a proprietary Apple setting that will only work if you have another Apple router.
It is not compatible with devices from other manufacturers.

  • Qwest Q100 Modem + Time Capsule + Airport Express = only wireless working

I have been reading other similar topics and havent quite got the exact fix I am looking for.
Goal: I have qwest DSL, i have a Qwest Q100 modem from them, it has one ethernet port, i have that port going into my TC, and the TC being a wireless router, I also have a slingbox(ethernet), directv receiver(ethernet), and xbox(wirelessly) connected to the TC. On another floor, I have an airport express connected to the TC extending the network and ethernet coming out of it into another directv receiver(id like to add a ethernet switch to this and add another slingbox and blu ray all via ethernet) I also plan on adding another airport express in the basement and hooking up similar items via ethernet.
Problem: NOTHING thats hooked up via ethernet works, everything hooked up wirelessly works perfectly.
I have the dsl/ppp login details from qwest. I am assuming from what I am reading I need to bridge and make the TC control the ppp login.
the TC sees the items connected, as does the Q100. but no data what so ever via the ethernet ports on the TC or the APE, but the APE extends the wireless network perfectly.
I am basically looking for what I need to do on the Q100 and what I need to do on the TC for it to work with the wireless and the ethernet all over.
Thanks for any advice and help! I Greatly appreciate it!

would i be better off with the wireless model they offer?
It would simplify things a bit. I did not check the specs. I doubt that it offers dual band wireless, so you'll probably be turning the wireless function off to use the Time Capsule wireless.
the only mention i can find in the modem is "ipoe transparent bridging" in relation to bridging or anything of that sort.
The simplest form of bridge mode is probably what you need. It will take some experimentation unless some other users have done this before you and happen to see this post.
it seems like it may just be easier to get their wireless modem, plug into it directly for ethernet items
    That will work
qwest is of little help, i get "we do not support networking" responses when i talk with them.
Expect zero help from any provider. All they want to do is say "everything looks good to the modem. After that, we have no responsibility for anything".
run the TC off of it instead of as a wireless network, and make the airport express extend that modems network instead of TC's?
The Express will only extend the TC's network. It's not compatible with the other wireless router for this purpose.
is that practical at this point?
It's an option and there will always be plusses and minuses. Plus is easy connectivity. Minus is that you won't be able to use the Guest Network feature of the TC if you were planning to use that feature. I'm pretty sure the TC will have a far better dual band wireless section, so you probably won't use the wireless at all on the provider's device.
If it were me, I would try to make bridge mode on the modem work. Then you'll have all the options available on the TC. I run things that way here, but don't use Quest, so can't comment on their modem.

  • How do I set up wireless printing to my Airport Express?

I run my 17" MBP through a DLink wireless router which is located next to my modem in my basement. I have an Airport Express station (not the Base or the Extreme) which I used to use for wireless iTunes serving to my stereo, but which I now wish to use as a wireless print server in my study upstairs. I am not, however, using the Airport Express station for internet.
I can't find any useful instructions or step-by-step guides to set up a printer on my Airport Express. Can anybody point out how to do this and/or refer me to the appropriate KB article?
    Many thanks,
    Dustin LindenSmith

Yes but they don't seem to be making it to the post to be deleted Punctuation seems to be a possible cause
If your goal is to use one network with the AE and your other router online the AE needs to be connected to the modem as the base station as the AE can only be a wireless bridge with an Airport Extreme or connect the AE via ethernet from your other router
The printing is usually as easy as plugging in the printer and selecting it from your printer list AE is a print server and I use a 4 port hub with 4 printers connected They used to be listed as Rendezvous printers but lately mine are just showing as a connected printer but is printing wirelessly
Finder > Applications >Utilities > Airport Setup and Airport Admin utilities are pretty straight forward for setting up the routers. I have had and there are still issues being reported with the AE and certain configurations. My first gen MBP1.1 could see it but not connect and my MBP2.2 connected immediately and settings on both machines were the same.

  • Cannot use DSL for wireless & phone simultaneously with Airport Express

Hello, I've just moved and switched to DSL from cable modem.
    SBC DSL
One phone jack with the supplied filter on it allowing connection to the phone and supplied wired router
They provided a CD that configured the connection for me. In their ethernet connection it is not PPOE. Just DHCP. When I connect the laptop directly to the router via ethernet, I am able to surf and talk on the phone. When i connect the router to the Airport express and connect wirelessly, I can use either the phone or the internet. When I make a phone call the wireless drops.
Does anyone have any idea as to why this happens?
    Thanks,
    Neobe

    It's a 2.4 GHz phone
    This is likely your problem.
2.4GHz phones are notorious for interfering with WiFi networks, as they share the same frequency range.
This is a very common problem.
    I would suggest switching to a 900Mhz, or a 5.8GHz cordless phone.

  • Extend wireless network with multiple airport express and netgear powerline

I currently have the following network configuration:
    1. Using ATT u-verse (2-wire 3800HGV-B "modem") to internet
    2. Disabled the u-verse modem wireless router, and have connected an Apple Time Capsule wireless router (on a DMZ)
    3. Have four Netgear XAVB5001 powerline adapters connected to the time capsule (for our iMac desktops and the Apple TV)
    4. Have an Airport Express wirelessly connected to the time capsule to extend range (for our iPhones and iPad)
All this is currently working. What I would like to do is the following, keeping 1-3 above the same:
    4. Connect the airport express to the time capsule via Netgear XAVB5101 powerline adapter (instead of wirelessly connecting to the time capsule as it is today) and use it to extend the wireless range of the time capsule
    5. Add ANOTHER airport express to the time capsule via powerline adapter (and extend the wireless range elsewhere in the house).
Does anyone have any experience with this kind of setup and can assure that it would work? (I'm trying to decide whether to spring for a couple more powerline adapters and another airport express)
    Thanks in advance!
    Dave

I had a VERY similar problem:  I was trying to extend my wireless network using a hardwired ethernet connection from Airport Extreme to my Time Capsule.  Every time I plugged in the wire to the TC, everything disappeared.  Unplugged, and boom.  Came back.
    Here's how I solved it:
Go into Airport Utility and select the unit you are trying to use as a wireless extender and choose to edit it.  Then, on the wireless tab select CREATE a wireless network.  But, give it the exact same name and password.  This is completely counter-intuitive.  You would think to choose EXTEND, but this would be wrong.  Next choose the network tab.  And, select Router mode to Bridge (off).
By choosing the same name and password, your phone, laptop, etc. will think it's on the same network and move seamlessly from one to the other.
See if this fixes your issue.  Fixed mine instantly.  AND, it only took 3 painstaking hours of checking ethernet connections and rewiring jacks, etc. to figure it out.  LOL

  • All-in-one modem-routers vs Airport Express: compatibility

    Hi,
I just recently purchased an Airport Express 802.11n for my friend as a birthday gift, she would use it mainly for music streamng purpose.
Her first router was linksys WAG120N. Day 1, I set it up by making AX connects wirelessly to my WAG120N and then from AX to Speakers with audio cable, no problems were found.
Then after a while, the wireless speakers just disappeared from 2 Iphones and a PC running itune connecting within the same WLAN(not visible, light still green, internet access with LAN from AX still works)
After several days of trying to figure out the problems, I found this thread
    https://discussions.apple.com/message/11971848?messageID=11971848
which is the exact same case, so then i knew it was compatibility issue.
I took it back to my place which WLAN is running with wrt54g+DD-WRT, everything seems to be ok. wireless speakers can be connected after trying a few times, each time few hours apart without touching the AX. so I knew wrt54g is good for AX.
I know that in that thread the problem was fixed by using D-link router(dont know which model).
    I dont really like D-link,
Apple base routers are expensive, AX was enough as a gift.
    All-in-one is easier for her.
and I want Wireless-N for my friend(and for the future) so I bought a new all-in-one modem-router Belkin surf
    http://www.belkin.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Product_Id=511881
    The exact same problem happens
so now I'm very frustrated, and in need of a list of compatible wireless-N all-in-one modem-router
So far the list that I have
    NOT working
    Linksys WAG120N
    Belkin Surf
    working
    wrt54g+DD-WRT
    Thanks

    Hello,
    I have the same problem.
I have a new Apple Express updated to the latest version of the firmware 7.1.6. The AE is part of my wireless home network which is built with a Cisco WAG120N router running the latest firmware 1.0.0.16.
On this network I have 2 Samsung plasma TV's, 2 Samsung Blu Ray players, 2 Asus W7 laptops, 1 HP Colour Laser Printer, 2 iPhone's 4 and 1 iPad III. Everything only wireless connected and all works fine, no problems, good performance very stable, I can watch HBO GO via Internet directly on the big Samsung’s without any issue.
I purchased the AE to play my iTunes music on my home hifi system without cables and changes albums without leaving the couch.
My problem is that I don't get the AE stable to work.
The AE utility running under W7 only occasionally locates the AE, god thanks it did the first time so I could install it. To connect to the AE I have to type in the IP address in configure other in the utility. Then I change nothing and just do an update whereby the AE is reset I believe.
After that my AE works for about half an hour then it stops. In iTunes it most of the time shows error 15006, sometimes it just stops. After connecting again with the utility via the IP address and doing a dummy update with works again at least most of the time for another half hour. All this time I am able to see the AE in my Cisco network tool (Magic) as up and running and is the light on AE green.
I changed all settings one by one in my Cisco router to the way it is described in Apples troubleshooting documents. I even took it out of the DHCP scope of my router and gave it it's own fixed IP address. I have not took it out of my wireless network as that would kill my ability to play my music via iMatch and iCloud anymore.
I have this problem with both W7 PC's and the iPad. I have not tried the iPhones.
I don't know what to do anymore and am very disappointed about the Apples support on this subject. Is this their way of forcing customer to go buy a Time Capsule!
Somebody out there with an idea or hopefully the solution?
    Many thanks in advance.
    Rob
