Wireless mouse and drag lock

Is the wireless mouse supposed to have a drag lock like the pro mouse? (squeeze the side buttons). My wife's pro mouse is really easy to use the drag lock, but my (very) new wireless mouse seems to have no function to squeezing the small elliptical, slightly contrasting color, side pieces.

Hmm. I thought "you need to lift the mouse up while dragging a file" is the definition of drag lock. Anyway, my wife's mouse (same shape as the wireless, with side pieces the same shape and location as on the wireless) allows me to gently squeeze the side pieces while the mouse 'button' is depressed, lift the mouse, and move the mouse back to a better location on the mouse pad -- all without losing the 'mouse down' state. My wireless mouse does not allow me to maintain 'mouse down' unless I keep the bottom part of the mouse on the pad and maintain downward pressure on the housing.
If I tip the wireless mouse just right, I can get the optical tracking to lose sight of the pad, and as long as I keep some downward pressure on a corner of the mouse I can keep 'mouse down', but it's a pain. It also seems completely inconsistent with recent Apple mouse designs (not including the assignable feature on the might mouse).

Anyone know how to get a "Drag" and "Drag lock" indicator for the trackpad (mouse) cursor. When using the track pad, I'm often finding that my final click does not release the item I was dragging and then I inadvertently drag it across my screen, as I go to my next function. Would be nice if there was some type of indicator that would pop up on the cursor so you knew when drag lock is active.

Idiot question - How do I re-install Leopard? No matter what I do, it kicks the disk out on restart. I have tried using the 'install' command on the disk, nothing. It kicks the disk out and boots from the hard drive. I have tried rebooting holding down the 'c' key to force it to read from the drive, it still kicks the disk out and boots from the hard drive. What else should I do?

Someone suggested a solution involving permissions. I fixed my permissions. Drag and drop is still not working.
There was also a set of commands to type into terminal that would supposedly fix the issue, or perhaps it was a Spotlight issue that the thread had morphed into. I did that. Drag and drop is still not working.
Am I just totally hosed? Help!

Macbook Pro Retina (15") can't connect to wireless mouse and external USB keyboard

Hi All,
I got my new MacBook Pro Retina (15 inch) about 3 weeks ago. It works fine. I got a 30" Dell screen that I am using via thunderbolt/usb adapter. Also, I am using a thunderbolt ethernet adapter. Both adapters work fine without any problems.
I have an apple usb keyboard connected to the USB hub of the screen, as well as my iphone cable. It is a regular, full size apple keyboard. In addition to this, I have a logitech nano connected directly to the right usb port of the macbook pro.
This setup was working well until a few days ago. I lost connectivity with my mouse. Initially, I thought the batteries are empty. After replacing them, I still had no connection (again, the usb receiver is *directly* connected to the macbook).
I changed a few cables here and there and noticed that I can get either the keyboard to work or the mouse but not both at the same time. A reboot did not help.
Did anybody encounter such a strange problem already? If so, what could I possibly do?

It is certainly difficult to use the computer if your wireless keyboard and mouse do not connect. I found a few resources I recommend for this issue.

If the issue persists, I recommend reviewing the section titled "Top troubleshooting tips" in the article below. Step 9 specifically stands out to me for the issue you described:
9. Restart your computer
Sometimes a simple restart of your Mac is all it takes to get things running smoothly again. You may also want to try resetting your computer's PRAM and NVRAM.

Wireless mouse and keyboard not recognized

I know that I have had this issue before, but can't remember what the solution is (old age?) My iMac G5 PPC has a wireless mouse and keyboard (the old apple white one). The iMac came with these as an option but WITHOUT the bluetooth card inside. (I still don't know how this works, but it does). Anyway, the mouse and keyboard were not recognized when I tried to get on today. The batteries are good. If I go to system prefs (using an even older wired mouse) there is no bluetooth option (since no card is present). I don't know how to get the computer to try to recognize both. Any help is definitely appreciated.

If the iMac didn't come with Bluetooth software/hardware, then are you using a USB Bluetooth dongle?
And open System Profile (Applications/Utilities)
Select Bluetooth on the left under Hardware. You may need to click the gray disclosure triangle so it faces down. What does it say on the right?
If the Bluetooth icon is in your Status Menu Bar (top right in your screen). Click the icon and make sure Bluetooth is turned on. Then click: Open Bluetooth Preferences and try re-pairing the mouse and keyboard.

Wireless Mouse and Keyboard don't work under bootcamp. Any suggestions?

I installed Windows 7 through Boot Camp. Everything works, but my wireless mouse and keyboard. If I add a wired mouse and keyboard, they work. Have reinstalled Bootcamp a few times, but when I try and add the devices. they are seen, but then can't pair.
Any help would be appreciated.

before actually performing the SMC, that is a dragnet kind of catch-all, sometimes.
All of my keyboard & mouse units are USB and I've gone as far as supplying the
mouse and other peripherals with a powered USB hub; so power from the Mac
isn't spread too thin. The keyboard is one of the only items that should be attached
to the USB port; as it has to work on startup pre-boot keyboard shortcuts... Such
as SafeBoot, PRAM reset, and others where you need a live keyboard and BT
may not be up to the task of being ready. Three going on four of my Macs have
bluetooth capabilities for those items; but I can't justify the continual upkeep cost.
Spare USB keyboards and a few extra mouse are handy as troubleshooting tools, too.

Perhaps the SMC pre-reset suggestions may help resolve the issue, if not, try reset.

Wireless mouse and Keyboard Issue after closing the lid - external display

Can anyone give any insight. Recent purchase of a new Late 2008 15" MBP. I have connected it to an external 24" Apple monitor on my desk and use a wireless mouse and wireless keyboard on my desk top. I have configured the laptop to wake on bluetooth devices. So here is the problem: The laptop when the lid is up recognizes the bluetooth keyboard and mouse. I close the lid/screen. Laptop powers down... the after several seconds I move the mouse and the laptop comes alive... But after that there are no bluetooth devices attached. When I use the mouse, I get "connection lost" with a white figure of the mighty mouse on the screen. The wireless keyboard is not there and I have to open the lid and manually find the mouse and reconnect. The keyboard seems to work however....
Apple..... any thoughts..... anyone?????

Hi Stentdoc; I'm thinking, 'connection lost ~= sorta low AA batteries in the Mighty Mouse? (I would put in fresh AA batteries in the mouse and keyboard, to eliminate as an issue that the 'connection lost' is due to low batt voltage; that this is causing the failure to wake.) ... then, in System Preferences > Hardware > Energy Saver, settings for Power Adapter > Sleep, set to "never" for "Put the computer to sleep when it is inactive for ..." to eliminate that as a conflict when trying to wake with bluetooth from sleep induced by closing the lid ...
Check your current "Sleep" setup (I left my MBP as "3")
go to Utilities > Terminal
After you launch Terminal, the first step is to determine which sleep mode your Mac is currently using. You can both view and change the sleep mode using the Unix program pmset. To see your current settings, type (or, copy and paste)
pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
press 'enter'
You should see something like this:
$ pmset -g | grep hibernatemode
hibernatemode 3
So your machine is using mode 3 ... thanks to the documentation for the handy Deep Sleep Dashboard widget, which puts your machine immediately into hibernation mode (so you don’t have to yank all the power sources to invoke it):
* 0 - Old style sleep mode, with RAM powered on while sleeping, safe sleep disabled, and super-fast wake.
* 1 - Hibernation mode, with RAM contents written to disk, system totally shut down while “sleeping,” and slower wake up, due to reading the contents of RAM off the hard drive.
* 3 - The default mode on machines introduced since about fall 2005. RAM is powered on while sleeping, but RAM contents are also written to disk before sleeping. In the event of total power loss, the system enters hibernation mode automatically.
also, I enabled this (to change back, input "lidwake 1":
go to Utilities > Terminal
type in sudo pmset lidwake 0 then "enter"
it will ask for your password. type it in, that's it!
Now, when your computer is sleeping with the lid closed, when you open the lid nothing happens until you press any key ... nice: keeps it off when accidentally opened, like in a backpack?

I have a new(ish) 27" iMac, OS X 10.6.3 [ with two-tone display ...but that's another story ]
I set it up with the wireless mouse and wireless keyboard that came with it.
The instructions were pretty clear how to "pair" the mouse and keyboard.
So I paired them both up and got started with my new iMac.
But I really didn't like either one (to each his own).
Tried my best but just never warmed up to them.
So, I have just gotten me new, third party, wired mouse and wired keyboard.
Question: am I supposed to formally UN-pair the mouse and keyboard?
Seems like you ought to.
Tell the iMac to quit looking for them?
There's an on/off switch on the mouse.
I can just turn it off.
But do I UN-pair it first.
Or anything?
And...there's what the manual says is an on/off switch on the keyboard.
But it seems to be an "on/on" switch.
Maybe this is a "small deal".
Or maybe it is a "no deal at all".
But I find that some times it DOES make a difference whether you do something just the right way or not.
So, just trying to find out.

I have also invoked the wrath of someone that I was assisting with an issue who accused me "assuming" that they were a beginner and of talking down to them. It is often a thankless position.
I was mainly poking fun at myself for being so basic in my understanding of some of this stuff.
But I understand exactly what you're saying.
Hard to know isn't it?
I believe that if you highlight each device separately in the list, that you can then select the - symbol next to the cogwheel and delete the device altogether from your iMac.
Well, I WAS highlighting each device separately, but all the "cogwheel" was giving me was the "disconnect" option.
Then I wondered, hmmm... what's these little "+" and "-" symbols next to the cogwheel mean?
BAM! yep, the minus sign removes them from the computer completely.
..which, if I'm not going to be using them again was what seemed TO ME the thing to do.

First time user trying to set up new Mac pro, wireless mouse and wireless keyboard together?

So I just bought a new Mac Pro, wireless keyboard and mouse. i am a first time Mac user. How do I even get started......connect the wireless mouse and key board to the Mac Pro desktop to even get started??

Just turn on the mouse and keyboard and observe that the green light comes on and starts to blink then turn on the Mac. The Mac should give you on-screen instructions.

Why do I sometimes suddenly lose Bluetooth from my Imac? I use it for my wireless mouse and keyboard. I then can't find it in system preferences but have to shutdown my Mac and hope it comes back

This is an infuriating problem and wondered if it happens to other people too and if I am doing the right thing by turning the Mac off then on again.

The spinning wait cursor (or "beachball") generally means there's some problem that's causing the current app to freeze, or slowing down the current application, or that's slowing down the whole system.
Here's an overview of the spinning wait cursor.
Make a backup first, using the Disk Utility tool booted from your installation DVD to external storage. This backup to ensure you still have access to your most current and complete data, shut this be a problem with your hardware.
Then use Utilities > Activity Monitor.app and the Utilities > Console.app tools to see what's going on, and whether there are related errors being logged.
There are some general troubleshooting articles around, too.

For no apparent reason my apple wireless mouse and keyboard stopped working. I was not upgrading or installing anything, the batteries are good, nothing was changed as far as I know. Now bluetooth discovers the paired devices, connects for about 30 seconds, the disconnects ... or stays connected but doesn't work.
What's happenned ... I'm rushing to finish a big job ... any ideas? I've tried re-pairing but doesn't work ... says that OSX version may be incompatible with device bluetooth ... I'm using Lion so maybe there is another lion problem?

Barry: What do you mean with "making devices favorites"?
This is the method:
Go to system preferences>bluetooth. Highlight an item in the sidebar. If detailed information does not appear, click on the little gear and select show more info. Then click on the gear again and select favorite.
And how could an hardware-related problem be (temporarily) solved rebooting the OS?
Intermittent problems are, IMHO, most often caused by hardware. Restarting will occasionally "fix" problems - why, I do not know.

I need help as both my wireless mouse and wireless keyboard are totally no responsive and I replaced them with fresh new batteries. My wifi/internet connection is offline too. My Bluetooth signal is the Bluetooth with jagged lines "Bluetooth offline". I tried to disconnect all my USB devices and restarted. I tried the methods listed here but to no avail.
Yesterday afternoon there was a lightning in the skies and it caused blackout throughout my whole house. So it might be due to the power surge from the Lightning but all my other devices like my iPhone and modem router are working fine. I restarted the router too. It was fine the whole evening till nighttime yesterday. This morning I woke up, I can't do anything at all.

First thing to try is resetting the PRAM per the instructions below. If that does not work then please use the instructions on how to connect a Bluetooth mouse and keyboard below.

Thanks for your reply, The thing is that Bluetooth is no longer there to be turned on, it's gone. The only thing I see on my desktop menu bar next to time machine is a bluetooth icon, when i click on it i get bluetooth not available. Ive tried several suggestions such smc reset and nothing, Im trying to reinstall mountain lion but i dont think it will help since this is a hardware issue, any suggestions, please!
