Wireless music setup. Does Remote App require a special version of iTunes?

I am about to create a wireless music system in my house. It is supposed to be able to play different songs at the same time in different rooms.
Setup as follows:
NAS server to host music cabled to Airport Extreme Base Station, MAC Mini (leopard) with one version of iTunes version 4.1 installed on different users (which will be labeled living room, kitchen etc.) and Fast Switching User enabled, MAC Mini also cabled to Airport Extreme Base Station which sends to a number of Airport Express' in all the rooms I want music in, Airport Express connects to powered speakers. Everything is to be controlled by Remote on a couple of iPhones.
I’m told that to make this work I have to use an old edition of iTunes, namely 4.1. This worries me that I cannot verify that iTunes 4.1 works with the Remote app.
Can anyone comment on Remote – iTunes 4.1 relation, please?
Comments on the setup in general are also happily received.
BR, S. Klauber

Considering the complexity of what you have in mind, and also that you still have to invest in the equipment, you might want to consider a Sonos system. Now they also have an iPhone app, so you don't even need to buy the dedicated remote (which alone is pricy enough). Before AirTunes was able to stream to multiple APXs at the same time, I seriously considered it – but in the end I'm glad I didn't go for the Sonos, since AirTunes currently covers my needs.
I don't have an Airport Extreme, but I have to say that the iMac is connected directly to one of the APX. (The other APX is connected only wirelessly to the system, and a couple of rooms away.) If you don't need to connect USB drives to the base station, you don't really need to buy an Extreme, as the APX is a perfectly autonomous base station.
Nonetheless, as you might have read in the forums, the AirTunes system does not always work flawlessly, and can be quite moody, especially when interference is present. But interference (like with microwave ovens) should be less of a problem with new equipment, if you make it work at 5 GHz.
Lastly, having two iTunes libraries doesn't mean that you have to duplicate data on disk. If you set up iTunes so it just references files on your NAS, you can have two (or more) libraries that use the same files. But the two libraries are necessary so that the various instances of iTunes running simultaneously do not create data conflict. Having multiple libraries on the same data can be a bit of a pain if you add music often, as you'd have to keep them in sync, but there might be tools to help you with that.

OK, I understand that new versions make use of facilities that come with new versions of IOS, but there is/was a version that runs on 3.1.3 and therefore, I assume 4.2.1. Where can I get the (old) version that runs on my IOS?
The app store seems to ignore all legacy equipment owners, and want me to spend loadsa money to get the latest shiny toy. It probably makes business sense, but I dislike companies that take that approach. This is my first venture into smart phones, and I like the IOS interface, but I'm not sure I can afford the maintenance.

This is standard for Apple.  While there is little official mention of the software support lifespan for equipment, typical support has been about 4-5 years for computers.  It strikes me that newer items, especially mobile devices, are not built as sturdily nor do they have the hardware upgrade capabilities required to keep up with newer systems.  When we bought an iPhone 4S we were told by the person in the store we'd probably be looking at a newer model in two years.  The iPhone 3G could be anywhere from 2 to 4 years old, putting it well into.
As for app availability, Apple typically pulls old software versions from its site when new versions appear.  If it is a non-Apple app then I guess it is up to the vendor. It is indeed tiresome but it is not at all unusual.  Since I only ever run used Macs, I download current versions even though my computer won't run them, stick them on a hard drive, then I have them when I upgrade to a newer used computer.  If you run older equipment you have to learn a different mode of operation to exist with the Apple 'new and innovative' but 'forget about the old' philosophy.

  • TS4124 can imatch be used for more than one persons library of music, or does each person require a separate imatch account?

Can iMatch be used for more than one person's library of music, or does each person require a separate iMatch account for their own library?

    1 account = 1 library, 2 = 2 and so on.

  • This PC does not meet the minimum requirements for this version of iTunes

Trying to update my iTunes, the installer gives the error message:
"This PC does not meet the minimum requirements for this version of iTunes"
I have gone through the procedures listed in the support section, and have completely removed all Apple software, deleted the file folders etc etc.... still no joy.
This is most annoying as I've just received my brand new iPhone 6+ and I was trying to backup my old device to iTunes so I could restore it onto the new phone and get using it today.  Hacked off big time :-\

Well I've eventually managed a work-around.  Ver. 11.5.1 was no good because it wasn't compatible with my iphone 5, next one wasn't compatible with my iphone 6+, eventually got 11.4 installed so I could back up my old iphone 5 to it, then restore that backup onto my iphone 6+, which then wasn't up to date with the current iOS so I had to do that before it would sync my apps.
    What a ball ache.
If someone would kindly let me know when the latest iTunes works again I's appreciate it, until then I'll have to stick with what I've got.
I need to start again with my music collection, re-import everything and get it on my iphone, because I had to delete it all a few months ago when iOS updated because it didn't have enough storage space on the device!  Somehow lost it all off my iTunes in the process!
TBH I've always found the Apple system hideously complicated and infuriating when it doesn't work properly.  Instead of making it more and more complex it needs simplifying and making fool-proof so people don't have to go through all this BS just to use their **** phone!

  • Remote App on IPod Touch Connect to ITunes on Win7

Is anyone having a problem making the Remote APP on ipod touch connect to ITunes on Win7 over WiFi? Itunes sees it alright, asks for a Passcode which the ipod supplies, considers it and then says it is invalid. I'm open to suggestions.

Yes it is, I click on the "Remote" button, type the passcode into iTunes, it thinks for a while then comes back and says "invalid passcode". The two are communicating or iTunes wouldn't show the "Remote" button or display the passcode entry window.

Syncing music via iTunes is only one way: from iTunes to your iPod.  If you need to copy the music from your iPod back to your PC, see this older post from another forum member Zevoneer covering the different ways to do this.

Make sure the computer is authorized. From the iTunes menu bar click Store / Authorize This Computer.

  • TS1741 I can get my iTunes music on my remote app, but not the actual remote???  Can anyone help?

I am trying to use my remote app to browse through my Apple TV, but all I can get in home sharing is iTunes ( my music). Can someone help. Thanks
    Sgarbo

the app "remote" when accessing your music, actually gives you listings.  When you are using with Apple TV, it acts only as a good old remote control.  You control the screen, in stead of the little silver remote that came with the unit.  But there is no listings, simply a control device.

  • Why does Remote App no longer work since upgrading to IOS 6?

Since updating my Touch to IOS 6, I can no longer use the Remote App to connect to my itunes library on my iMac.  I have tried both homesharing and "add an itunes library" and both have failed.  I have been through all the posted support articles with no success.  By the way, I can still use my first generation IPAD to connect with no problems.

    I have this problem also,
We have an iPad 2, iPod Touch, iPhone 4,4s and iMac.
The printer is a HP LaserJet CP1525nw and is listed as a compatable AirPrint printer.
The two iPhones and iPad 2 were upgraded to IOS6 last week.
We wanted to print something out today and when selecting printer it came up with "No AirPrint Printers Found".
This happened on the Other iPhone and the iPad as well. However all the other devices that were not upgraded still work.
I have upgraded the firmware on the printer to the latest version, however this has not helped. I have restarted all devices as well as my network router multiple times to no avail.
Apple need to provide a fix as this provlem is evidently as a result of their IOS6 upgrade.

  • Can't get Apple Remote App to stay connected to my ITunes library.

I recently had my modem and router taken out by lightening.  So I replaced them both with what is supposed to be the latest and greatest.  Simultaneously, Apple had a new version of ITunes, so I updated.  Now I can't get the Apple remote app to stay connected to ITunes.  If I start ITunes on my computer, my IPhone 5 will see and connect to the library, as well as my IPad.  But as soon as my IPhone or IPad goes to sleep and I try to reconnect to the library, it can't connect to the library.  I've never had any connection problems before and not sure what is causing the problem.  I can turn off Home Sharing in ITunes and turn it back on again, or restart ITunes and it works, but as soon as the IPhone or IPad goes to sleep, it won't reconnect again.  Is this a router issue or ITunes Home Sharing issue?  Any input to resolve this will be greatly appreciated..............because it is really annoying not to be able to control music the way I did before!  All products have the latest updates.

Take it back and exchange it.
If the remote doesn't work out of the box new then either remote is faulty or AppleTV is faulty (eg IR sensor not located properly in the case).
Either way one of them isn't working, exchange it.

  • Remote app on my ipad only show iTunes interface...

I was having problems getting me iPad Remote app to work with my Apple TV 1.  So I deleted then re-added it to my iPad.
It did find my Apple TV 1 and sync, but now it only shows an itunes interface and there seems to be no way to use it
    as a remote? Any suggestions?
    Thanks

    Recovery Mode
    1. Disconnect the USB cable from the device, but leave the other end of the cable connected to your computer's USB port.
    2. Turn off the device: Press and hold the Sleep/Wake button for a few seconds until the red slider appears, then slide the slider. Wait for the device to turn off.
3.While pressing and holding the Home button, reconnect the USB cable to the device. The device should turn on.
    4. Continue holding the Home button until you see the "Connect to iTunes" screen. When this screen appears, release the Home button. iTunes should alert you that it has detected a device in recovery mode. Click OK, and then click Restore to restore the device.
Note: Data will be lost. You may have to repeat the above many times.

  • Where is the Remote App option (to pair devices) in iTunes on Windows 8?

I know it used to be in the sidebar, and view options. Now with the sidebar removed, and it being gone from my options list, I'm at a loss of where to look. I just need to find the options page where you input the code to pair my App with my Computer.

When you click Add an iTunes Library in the Remote app on your device iTunes should detect the device like this:
Click the entry with the remote app icon and type in the paring code on the screen that appears.

  • Hello I have a 4 yo mac desktop..I bought a new iphone s and wanted to use it with my itunes. It required the new version of itunes be downloaded to my mac so I did so but when I try to install it it requires version 10.8 or better?

    Hello,
I have a 4 yo mac desktop system unkown i downloaded latest version of itunes for use with my iphone5s but when I try to install I get an error message reads" requires ox 10.6.8 or better be installed?....stystem update check shows no updates available.....help

Get more information about your computer. Go to the Apple in the upper left corner of any window, then  "About This Mac".  Write down what it says about "version"and report that here.  Now continue to "More Info..."  Copy and paste the information here, but omit the serial number and Hardware UUID (if present).
If you have a PPC Mac you cannot sync your idevice without a newer computer.  See the end of this post for options.
If it says you have an Intel Mac you can upgrade to Snow Leopard (if you don't already have it -- OS 10.6), but check system requirements first:
    Snow Leopard 10.6 Technical Requirements - http://support.apple.com/kb/SP575
You can buy Snow Leopard at:
Snow Leopard disc source - http://store.apple.com/us/product/MC573Z/A/mac-os-x-106-snow-leopard
After installing, or if you already have some lower 10.6 version, run the updater to 10.6.8, then upgrade iTunes.
