Wireless N Broadcasting Question

I recently purchased my 1st wireless N router (Linksys of course and I noticed that it's broadcasting 2 signals (one I named N and the other I named NMedia but I can't remember why I named it that).  Why are there 2 different signals?

Well, it's easier to tell if you have posted the exact model and version of the router as printed on the label underneath the router.
It seems as if you have one of those dual-radio wireless routers. It has two radios built-in to allow simultaneous communication on 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Both radios can be configured independently and by default use different SSIDs. This way you can "select" if you want to connect on the 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz band depending on the SSID you choose. Usually, the "Media" SSID is the 5 GHz band because in average it's not so busy as the 2.4 GHz band and thus is better for media streaming.
If you don't want two SSIDs and you have rather let your computer pick the band to use (which is a decision of the wireless device driver in the computer) you can set both SSIDs identically, with identical wireless security. Then each wireless device can pick the band.
Other wireless N routers are dual-band but not dual-radio. The radio can be configured for 2.4 GHz or 5 GHz but you cannot use both at the same time. Some other wireless N routers are only 2.4 GHz single band.

  • Wireless SSID Broadcast?

When wireless SSID broadcast is DISABLED, does this prevent others in the area from seeing your network listed in the "view available wireless networks" list?

    Thanks.
Forgot to ask:  If a relative comes over and I let them hook into my network, will I have to ENABLE SSID for them to see it in order to log on?

  • Wired/wireless traffic general question

I originally set up my Airport Extreme without much expertise on WiFi or routers, but I want to raise my knowledge base now.
My current question: In general operation with both ethernet and wireless clients, obviously all the traffic with wireless clients is broadcast over RF to anything out there that can receive them, but is any of the traffic between the base station and the ethernet clients also broadcast over the RF signal? To put it another way, can eaves dropping on the RF traffic also allow eaves dropping on the ethernet traffic?
Are there any good educational books like a Missing Manual or such on WiFi or Airport?

A lot of very interesting aspect of "others experience w/airport". I'm also in a suburb w/a lot of WiFi, other variation's of the same, and Airport traffic. One early concern I had was the  Rf-AP system starting up, as it does right out of the box. Not knowing this, (at least at first) was for me an embarrassing  wake-up call. As for near-by WiFi/and other "dish, etc" systems, A few thing's I noticed, and thanks to associate's who know WiFi/Rf tech very well, a few observations, for what it's worth. Regarding "Ghosting" of certain signals, it is almost inevitable for many reasons. It's a bit like (usually and harmlessly) being at a crowded party, where you "hear" many people jabbering away, but don't really know "what they're saying, other then 'something."
Oddly enough, I have an associate who calls that (a bit like a cheap hearing aid) "Rf, or harmonic din". As for it being problematic from a security point-of-view one needs to isolate "sections" from one "broadcast" which I'm told is rather low tech, as a first step to having one "borrow your specific signal,' for say either sub-Walmart (cheap bas******) access to the net thanks to your WiFi AP. As you mentioned, w/so much depending on the chronic pain that's all based on passwords, well, we know the issue w/that.
Several aspects of trying to maintain some dignity in not getting hacked for whatever intent present repeated problems. I was hacked, and it was (unfortunately not benign). Believe me. Since , I have done everything short of active EW suppression (FTC, and anyone in range would be understandably ******-off.) Your comment about "flat signal strength" I'm told is screaming, "I'm blending in, move on." Varying sig strength is one way to blend in yourself, but only a bit.
But WiFi signal structure has certain quiescent properties reported in the literature (I read it on physorg.com, or technology review I think) that makes that soft engulfing-Rf nature of WiFi useful, Ex: for those who want to know, or really just be aware "someone, a pet", etc; who is moving around a room, compared w/the stuff in a room, building, etc. That attribute provide's a technical/mathematical  yardstick that is at least one reproducible and exploitable aspect of the technology. As with that noisy background "party din," it's why noise in general can be cut through as long as you get even a small piece of a conversation.
I've looked at passive material "blankets" that smother Rf. Certain conductive polymer's woven in the density of a gym mat are somewhat useful if its something serious enough. Naturally, (pricey) and by no means perfect. Beyond that one can use old power company techniques developed to know where a line goes down, for example if using a hard line. Since ac can be modulated, it can also be run through what looks like a small old desk-top pc cpu tower. ****, anyone can buy a plugin, looks a small 120vt-12v transformer you plug in the wall ac, and that turns ones household wiring  into a local, house/office Rf wireless network.
In the end it can get surreal, silly, paranoid. or just sad. Been there too. Anyway, best of luck. Bob.

  • Disabling SSID Broadcast Question

I'm glad to say that my just installed router (WRT54GS-7) is working great.  I have a question however on Disabling SSID Broadcast.  According to the Linksys instructions, after I checked the disable button, I am required to change my profile.  I am to click on an icon on the bottom right tool bar.  The issue I have is that there is no icon to click on.  If I disable my SSID Broadcast, how do I go about changing my profile?

If Windows is the primary connection software for your wireless, simply open Start-->Control Panel-->Network Connections
Right-click the wireless network connection in that list and click Properties, the second tab labeled Wireless Networks will allow you to create a profile for a wireless network.  Profiles appear in the Preferred Networks list.  If this area is greyed out that means you installed 3rd party software to handle your wireless connections.  In which case you will need to open that software and configure the profile from within there.

  • New Wireless-N setup questions

I just bought the WRT310N router along with the USP Wireless router for my home pc and the Wireless N gaming adapter (that does cabled ethernet to wireless N) for my Tivo to tranfer HD tv recordings to and from my PC.  I was told that the WRT310N router does 310Mb/s.  Is this true?
I was also told that the usb and gaming adapter will be able to go up to 310Mb/s as well.  Is that true?
I am having difficulty getting speed out of the gaming adapter.  My tivo recordings only go at like 8Mb/s.  That's not very fast.  Is there any way to force higher connection speeds from the router?

Your WRT310N should be able to connect to a wireless n adapter at a maximum of about 200 to 270 Mbps.  Note that this is a "connection" speed, not a data throughput speed.  Currently wireless n users are reporting data throughput speeds in the range of 20 to 70 Mbps (megabits per second).  This would be about 2.5 to 8.5 MBps (megabytes per second) of actual data transfer.
To maximize your wireless speed, you must improve your wireless connection.
There are many causes for poor wireless connections, and many solutions:
First of all, give your network a unique SSID. Do not use "linksys". If you are using "linksys" you may be trying to connect to your neighbor's router. Also set "SSID Broadcast" to "enabled". This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
In the router, make sure the "Radio Band" is set to "Wide".
Poor wireless connections are often caused by radio interference from other 2.4 GHz devices. This includes wireless phones, wireless baby monitors, microwave ovens, wireless mice and keyboards, wireless speakers, and your neighbor's wireless network. In rare cases, Bluetooth devices can interfere. Even some 5+ GHz phones also use the 2.4 Ghz band. Unplug these devices, and see if that corrects your problem.
In your router, try a different channel. There are 11 channels in the 2.4 GHz band. Usually channel 1, 6, or 11 works best. Check out your neighbors, and see what channel they are using. Because the channels overlap one another, try to stay at least +5 or -5 channels from your strongest neighbors. For example, if you have a strong neighbor on channel 9, try any channel 1 through 4. For wireless n, make sure your standard and wide bands are at least 2 channels apart. For example try standard band on channel 11, and wide band channel 9.
Also, try to locate the router about 4 to 6 feet above the floor, in an open area. Do not locate it behind your monitor or near other computer equipment or speakers. The antenna should be vertical.
Also, in the computer, go to your wireless software, and go to "Preferred Networks" (sometimes called "Profiles" ). There are probably a few networks listed. Delete any network named "linksys". Also delete any network that you do not recognize, or that you no longer use. If your current network is not listed, enter its info (SSID, encryption (if any), and key (if any) ). Then select your current network and make it your default network, and set it to automatic login. You may need to go to "settings" to do this, or you may need to right click on your network and select "Properties" or "settings".
If the above does not fix your problem, download and install the latest driver for your wireless card.
Some users have reported improved wireless performance by switching to WPA or WPA2 encryption.  (Note:  Windows XP users will need SP3 to run WPA2.)
If you continue to have problems, try the following:
For wireless n routers, try setting the "n Transmission Rate" to 162 Mbps, and the (wireless g) "Transmission Rate" to 54 Mbps.
If you still have trouble, download and install the latest firmware for your router. After a firmware upgrade, you must reset the router to factory defaults, then setup the router again from scratch. If you saved a router configuration file, DO NOT use it.
    Hope this helps.

  • 881W Wireless not broadcasting

    Hi,
I have a 881W and I have it working on the internet, my issue is I cannot seem to get the wireless working.  i have sessioned into the internal AP, setup everything I thought I needed through CLI.  I then went into CCP and told the SSID to broadcast, but I do not see the network to connect to it.  I have looked through the Cisco documentation and it is just not making sense to me, I have done what I believe it has said to do, but it does not go through a complete setup...it is quite broken up with links to other pages and other chapters of other configuration guides.
Here is my config below, thank you for the help!!!  Router first then AP...

  • Wireless Router WAN Question

I currently have a WRT600N wireless router. This router allows me to release the WAN IP and get a new IP. It may rotate through what ever my service provider is offering but it is always different at least 4 times in a row. I have another cable connection upstairs and a different type of router. This router does not get a new IP when I do a ipconfig /release, instead, it will get the same ip back all day long.
I put the WRT600N on the upstairs cable modem and got the results I expected based on what I saw downstairs. So my question is, If I am looking for a new router for the upstairs connection, what spefically would I be looking for that allows the router to get a new IP everytime I disconnect and reconnect. I am looking for an alternative to the WRT600N or a location to purchase the WRT600N.
Again, I am talking about the WAN port, not the LAN port. I know that some service providers lock the IP down by MAC, but that is not the case in my situation.
    Thanks in Advance,
    Brandon

OK, one more time, in better english. I have a computer and a WRT600N on on cable modem. And I have a computer and a WRT54G on another cable modem. When I access the http server of the WRT600N via a web browser and release the WAN interface IP, and then renew it, I get a new IP address. I can do this over and over and I get a new IP everytime.
From the other computer, I access the http server of the WRT54G via a web browser and release the WAN interface IP, and then renew it, I get the same IP address. I can do this over and over and I get the same IP everytime.
When I move the WRT600N to the upstairs cable modem, I get a different IP everytime I  release and renew the IP address (Via the web interface of the router).
So I know that it is some capability of this particular router. The cable modem accounts are from the same company. So my question was, "What is it in this particular router that allows the WAN interface to get a new IP everytime it release and renews?".
I know how DHCP works, and how ISP can sometimes lock an IP to a MAC address for a period of hours, or indefinetly. However, that is not the case in my situation. If you do not know what allows this particular router to get a new and different IP each time it connects that is ok.
I can not make this any clearer.
    Thanks,
    Brandon

  • Wireless WRT54GS speedbooster question

    Hello everyone.
I have a few questions if someone could give me some answers. I'm using Vista Ultimate. I've got to tackle  installing the router again since I have a different computer and then I'll have to set up networks to other computers here (3) actually. But I have had my wireless speedbooster for a year and now got to go through the whole process again. My question is why do they call it wireless when you have to plug in cables? What is the wireless part suppose to consist of? Someone came to my house this past weekend and said something about it and it did make me wonder about that.
And how far can you actually set another computer to your network. Is it only in your household location or can you let someone 10 minutes away to network with you or add them on your network.
I tried to search for the wireless question but I couldn't find it and I did go under general question but for some reason couldn't find a new message so I could ask. It's been very aggravating and I didn't remember it being this aggravating before. Also I've read here that I don't have to install the router through the CD. I have tried to do that on these vista windows which I hate and I'm going to install windows 7 over this when I get the chance but I got to tackle one thing at a time. You'll never know if you don't asking tried to connect the router and computer using the CD it goes through the whole thing but never really configures it but then it was very very slow after that so it must have done something. So  now it's not even plugged  in or connected at all. Ever since I disconnected and connected my DSL back to my computer I have these issues  whenever I cut my computer it telling me these message. When booting up 1-"cannot communicate with DNS 208 104 244 45 network diagnosis pinged the remote host with no response". And this message "windows confirmed that primary DNS server is currently online but is not responding windows confirmed that primary DNS server is currently online but is not responding at this time this usually means the firewall is running between the two and computers (I have only one connected at all at home for now!) and blocking the domain. Windows have confirmed that the firewall on computer is confirmed correctly to allow this connection but however a firewall is blocking your connection". Can anyone guide me somewhere or give me links to follow because I have a serious cornea infections and hoping that I haven't lost my eyesight in one eye and I'm not suppose to be on the computer to let my eye rest.
Any help would be very much appreciated very much
    Thanks, Harley123

The Router which you have its an 4 Port Ethernet / Wireless Router. Well its not necessary to Hardwired your computer always to the Router. Once your Router is Configured properly, then you don't need to connect your computer, you can use all the computers Wirelessly and they all will be able to go online... Just for an Initial Setup you need to Hardwired your computer to the Router, Once its done then you need to unplug the Ethernet cable from your Computer and your computer should be able to go online wirelessly.
The wireless signals of your Router can go upto 80 to 100fts, Not beyond that. As you have mentioned that you want to share the connection with some who is 10min away from your Place, then its Impossible.
There are 2 different ways to configure your Router, Using the Setup Disk or Configuring all the settings on your Router Manually.
Whenever you connect your Modem to your Computer and if you face that problem just you need to Unplug the power from the Modem wait for 10sec and replug to the power to your Modem and check if you are Online.
Windows Vista has Many issue while connecting to Internet. Sometimes you get all the information on your computer and your computer is properly connected, but the Vista computer doesn't let you go Online.

  • Wireless Keyboard + Wireless Mighty Mouse questions

Hey everyone, Mac users please don't hate me for asking this but I have some questions about using the Apple wireless keyboard and wireless Mighty mouse on a windows XP PC (Not in boot camp).
I have already bought the wireless keyboard, and have it working with my Windows PC using a Belkin bluetooth dongle, and was just wondering why the Control + Alt + Delete combo on the apple keyboard of (Control + option + Fn + Backspace) isn't working for me? I think it may be something to do with the keyboard being wireless, or possibly the Fn key will not work in Windows? I also would like to be able to remap some of the "F" keys on the wireless keyboard to windows functions like the volume and playback/ pause media keys. Is there any software anyone can reccomend which will allow me to do this?
My second question is about the wireless mighty mouse. I haven't bought it yet, but I have strong intentions of doing so and using it with a Windows XP (to be updated to Win7 when it gets out of beta ~Sept) PC. I love apple hardware- peripherals especially, which is why I already bought the wireless keyboard and now wish to buy the Mighty mouse along with a 30" Apple display to use with the PC in my office at home. I have read mixed reports on many Mac forums about the compatability of the WMM with Windows, and have come here to get it cleared up before I spend close to £50 on a mouse that may or may not work. I heard somewhere that some but not all functions of the mouse would work in Windows, whereas somewhere else I read that a guy had installed a driver that was extracted from a (I think Leopard) Mac install disk and that the mouse was working 100% on his XP or Vista PC.
Any help would be greatly appreciated guys, I built myself a special edition of one of my own design Eclipse series PC's to put in my new office at the start of this year and normal monitors/ peripherals just dont look right in that room because its very minimalist and modern and Apple make the most minimalist but functional hardware I know, which is why I want to use this KB/Mouse/Monitor combination.
    Thanks,
    Matt.

I'm REALLY interested in how you got your Apple wireless keyboard to work on your XP PC. Was the keyboard recognized and working immediately? I've been reading thread after thread; still can't figure it out. Can you provide any help? Thanks.

  • Broadcasting question

    Hello all,
I would like to broadcasting some report to our customers. I have two questions:
    1. Can I send the report to any valid email address?
    2. Is it possible to use ALEREMOTE as the owner when send out the report? How to do that?
    Thanks!

Probably the same reason you don't want to use root to do everything in Unix.  It's a security concern, also if something goes wrong with broadcasting or whatever, you might need to blow away the ID, but you can't blow away ALEREMOTE.  We created a separate system account just for broadcasting.
While technically you can go with what Emmanuel said about logging into portal with any ID then use ALEREMOTE under authorization user of the broadcast configuration, we've run into errors with that setup.  So we played it safe and logged in with the system ID and created broadcast settings with that ID, so that both the setting owner and the authorization user are the same.

  • BEx Broadcaster Question

    Hello All.
Just a quick question since i'm getting inpatient.
I'm trying to set up schedules thru bex broadcaster thru the BI Portal.
Is there any other way to do this?  Meaning is there a tran code i can go to in the system and do the same.
This just seems to be very slow way of doing it, and just thought i'd throw the question out there.
    Thanks in advance.

  • Wireless AP density question....

    Hi everyone,
I am not very good at wifi... but we just setup a wifi system. Someone brings up an question... In a single conference room...let's say...about 1000 square feet conference room. Currently I have a AP mounting on the top wall. It is working fine. But let's say...there will be fifty..more or less people using connected to the single AP, would that affect the performance a lot?
Or if we add additional 2, or 3 more APs. WOuld that help the network performance/...or any kind of performance? The person mentioned about "density".
After renewing my CCNP...I will definitely buy a book to study for the wireless cert!
    Thank you for your help!
    Takami Chiro

To piggy back on Steve's comment...
All depends on the content. If you plan to do video and voice in this room on many of the 50 concurrent clients you will for sure feel some pain. It all goes back to how the 802.11 medium works. Its a half duplex medium. So only ONE client can talk at a time, "listen and then speak".
Normal web browsing you could get away with 1 ap, but would advise 2. If this is video / voice perhaps 3 aps. Low power, non conflicting channels. I might even advise direction anetnnas to better direct the coverage in the room. Again, I am not there or know what the room looks like but just making suggestions.

  • Broadcast questions

I've just been asked if I could shoot a debate for possible airing on our local Comcast provider. We're just in preliminary talks now, but figured I should get a jump on the game if I can. I've done DVD only work, but through reading these forums, have learned many things about video for broadcast. I know that Comcast will be picky about what format it's delivered on, either a tape or HDD, so that's something I'm asking about. But what else am I forgetting? I know coloring is major for broadcast, so really for the first time, I'll spend a while coloring the whole thing (the debate will be in a large room with florescent lighting, so I figure all I'll really be doing is taking out the florescent color and giving the speakers some life back in them). So besides delivery and coloring, is there anything else I should watch out for? I'll be shooting at least 2, hopefully 3 cameras in HDV, then downconverting to DV on import since I don't think Comcast would air this in HD anyways. Will I need to include timecode or countdown at the beginning? I know I'll need to add Bars and Tone, but how long and at both the start and finish? A lot of these questions I figure I need to discuss with someone at Comcast, but seeing as how right now I'm just working on a MacBook Pro with my camera as my deck (bad, I know, but when I start getting bigger jobs that require better equipment, then I'll upgrade), I want to plan what I'll need to rent, buy, or borrow for this gig early so I'm prepared.
Any details on broadcast work would be great, thanks.
    -Brian

Believe it or not, I did a performance recently on our local Comcast station, and asked them what format they were recording on and if I could get a dub and they told me they were recording to a DVD recorder and nothing else, for the broadcast master for their show!! They were nice enough to make me a VHS copy (informing me that in fact this was SUPER VHS - ooooo!)
Whether or not your station has similar standards or lack thereof, it will behoove you to take this opprotunity to learn about mastering. The station should be able to provide you with their specs and recommendations. As far as what you can do on your end -
turn on Range Check to see if any clips need to have the broadcast filter applied. FCP's broadcast filter will clamp down on luma and chroma (brightness and color sturation) to bring the image into broadcat safe specs. Usually this is done for non-cable broadcast signals, to keep the brightness and chroma from "bleeding" into the range of the frequency bandwidth used by the audio portion of the VHF or UHF signal. The Brodcast Safe filter can be merciless with your image detail if applied aggressively, and you may find better results can be achieved with the Color Correction filters.
I usually stripe my master tape with TC starting at 00:58:30:00. This allows 90 seconds for bars, slate and countdown before starting the program at 1:00:00:00, which iis generally the standard in North America. I like to build a sequence that will mirror my master tape, adding the bars, slate, and countdown in the sequence, rather than in the mastering window. There is a nice film countdown available in the Cinema Tools extras folder on the FCS discs somewhere, if you didn't already install it. I believe the file is called Head Leader-DV NTSC, or some such thing. There will be a countdown to -2 seconds with a pop that is supposed to occur 2 seconds before program start - in case you ever wondered where 2-pop came from...
Something that many beginners do not consider is that the bars and tone are supposed to be a reference to your program, not just some extra thing to stick onto your tape at the beginning. For instance, If you have taken the time to correct your color for broadcast safe, the default bars generator from final cut will have white levels outside of broadcast safe. Any engineer that receives your tape who is doing his or her job will see these bars and then correct the signal according to those bars, which will result in dull highlights and gray blacks. If your program is already broadcast safe, you should put a filter on the bars to match, to avoid "setup" being added to your video unnecessarily.
Same is true with the tone level. The bars will have a default reference tone level of -12. If analog dubs are made, the practice generally is to set the analog tone level to 0VU - on the analog scale, 0 is in the middle, with usually 5-10dB or more of headroom above 0VU, wehreas on the digital scale, 0dB is the absolute ceiling, above which any signal will be clipped. Anyway, I usually mix my audio so my average dialog is between -18 and -12, with peaks going to -9 or so. In this case I use a reference tone of -20 on my master, so that setting the incoming tone level to 0 on analog equipment will use the headroom above 0VU. If you have mixed your audio in this way, then you may get better results by changing the tone level in your mastering sequence. If your audio levels in FCP are peaking closer to 0dB on the digital scale, you should use the default -12 tone on the bars. There are differing shcools of thought on what is really the right standard, and different types of audio warrant different approaches, depending on dynamic range, how the master willl be used, etc.
    Hope this helps -

  • SSID Broadcast question

Ok, so today I thought that I would tighten my security up a little, so I turned off SSID broadcast. So everything was fine, I shut down, when I booted back up, and it would not find or connect to the network. I had to turn broadcasting back on in order to connect, how to I get this to work?
    Windows Vista
    WRT56GL V1

I used to recommend that "SSID Broadcast" be set to "disabled" for security reasons.  However, newer cracking methods have made this old trick practically worthless.  Currently, I recommend leaving "SSID Broadcast" set to "enabled".  This will help your computer find and lock on to your router's signal.
Your primary wireless protection comes from using a good encryption method such as WPA or preferably WPA2, and from using strong passwords.  WPA or WPA2 passwords (keys) should be at least 24 random characters (capital letters, small letters, and digits), and they should not contain any spaces.  With this level of encryption, you do not need to worry about broadcasting your SSID.
