Wireless network at home with my config

hi:
here's my situation:
1. Computer 1 :HP Touchsmart w/ wireless built in running Win Vista Home Prem. It can communicate with my Linksys router now.
2. Computer 2 HP Pavilion old but has 10/100 port previously used for cable modem running Win XP
3. Wireless USB adapter 600N on Computer 2- works fine
Current config (and it works fine):
1. CABLE line-> Linksys CABLE MODEM ->Wireless Router on 1st floor near Computer1
2. Wireless USB adapter (600N) attached to Computer 2
This all works fine but I basically have a non-secured wireless setup
What I'd like:
Computer 1 to be main system (even hardwired via 10/100 port) and have Computer 1 and 2 be on SECURED wireless network . A third computer (SONY laptop) shows up for wireless connect also.
Could someone suggest detailed steps to doing this (both hardware and software)? I appreciate your detailed responses. thanks. naf

It looks as if all you want is to secure your connection.  Just follow these instructions here.

I would suggest that you connect the Pioneer to the AirPort Express Base Station using an optical digital audio cable that has a TOSlink connector on one end and a 3.5 mm optical connector (Mini Plug) on the other. You can then connect the Mini Plug end into the AirPort's audio port and the TOSlink end into one of the Pioneer's optical digital audio ports.

    Additional things to try.
Try this first. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.

  • How do I set up a wireless network at home??

    Hi,
I am new to Mac's. I want to set up a wireless network at home, but I have not got a clue about AirPort, what it is or what it does!?! I am getting a new Mac, but my wife is currently using a Dell Windows laptop and our daughter is using a Windows PC. How do I set up a wireless broadband network at home which works with my Mac and my familys PC's? What do I need to buy and what do I need to do with them? I already have a broadband connection at home. Currently, my wife's PC is connected directly to the broadband modem (via an ethernet cable) that was supplied by the brodband company when I signed up to broadband.
Thanks for all your help with this.

scooter has provided links to Apple's pages for the AirPort Express and AirPort Extreme base station (AEBS).
Both of these devices are IEEE 802.11g wireless routers (also called base stations). If you have an Ethernet connection to the Internet (for example DSL or cable modem), you can connect either of these devices directly to that connection and create a wireless network. Since Ethernet and IEEE 802.11g are worldwide standards you can connect any compatible device (including PCs running Windows).
Every computer needs a unique IP address. You can think of an IP address as a street address for your house. A unique address guarantees that items addressed to you get to you.
Typically ISPs provide users with a single (one) public IP address. A public IP address is visible to anyone on the Internet. A router uses the single IP address provided by the ISP and creates multiple local (non-public) IP addresses for you computers. This allows you to use multiple computers.
If you need to connect both wireless and Ethernet computers you will need the AEBS. The AEBS provides a separate LAN port for Ethernet computers.
BTW, you can accomplish the same thing with any inexpensive wireless router.
The advantage of the AEBS over other routers is (a) built-in 56k modem for connecting to a dial-up ISP and (b) USB port for a single compatible printer.
The advantage of the AirPort Express over other routers is (a) sound output port for streaming music to a stereo and (b) USB port for a single compatible printer.

I now wish to add a second Airport extreme but am considering a hard wire connection with 100 ft of cat 6 cable from the Time capsule to the second Airport extreme.
    Excellent plan.
Can my network operate properly to extend the network with both a wireless and wired extend functionallity?
Yes, but don't get confused about the second AirPort Extreme, as it would not be configured to "extend" a wireless network.....it would be configured to "create a wireless network" using the same wireless network name, security settings and password as the Time Capsule network. Configure the second Extreme in Bridge Mode.
This Apple support document will show you how to hookup and configure the second AirPort Extreme:

  • I have an airport express and want to know how to set up two different wireless networks. One with 5GHZ and one with 2.4GHZ so different devices can connect to either.

I have an airport express and want to know how to set up two different wireless networks. One with 5GHZ and one with 2.4GHZ so different devices can connect to either. I have an iphone 4 that will not connect to 5ghz.
    thank you!

Your AirPort Express is already providing two separate 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands, but each band is using the same wireless network name.
This is the default setup for the AirPort Express, which is recommended for most users. The theory here is that devices will automatically connect to the best quality signal based on their capabilities and distance in relation to the AirPort Express.
It is possible to assign a different name to the 5 GHz band, and then "point" devices at that network to connect. Some users swear by this option.....(I am not one of them).... but you might want to give it a try to see how it works for you.
Open Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > AirPort Utility
    Click on the AirPort Express
Click Edit in the smaller window that appears
Click the Wireless tab at the top of the next window
Click Wireless Options near the bottom of the next window
Enter a check mark next to 5 GHz Name.....which will automatically add "5 GHz" to the network name....so you can identify it
Click Save, then click Update and wait a full minute for the Express to restart
Now you will need to "point" your 5 GHz capable devices at the 5 GHz network name.  2.4 GHz devices will connect to your "other" network name.

  • Wireless Network for Home use.

    Hey,
I am new to Mac and have a question about the frequency of the Wireless Network.
I have heard that there will be a new Ghz rate in the near future, 5.0 GHz (n) in stead of the existing standard of 2.4 GHz (g).
Has anyone heard of the new Ghz standard ?
My existing phone system is running at 2.4 GHz and the exiting wireless networks run at 2.4 GHz.
Will there be interference if both are used at the same time ?
I guess that is two questions but the same subject.
    Thanks,

My existing phone system is running at 2.4 GHz and
the exiting wireless networks run at 2.4 GHz.
Will there be interference if both are used at the
    same time ?
This is a difficult question to answer. It depends on the phone you use. For example, I have a pair of 2.4GHz cordless phones I bought a few years ago that do not interfere with my wireless network as far as I can tell. But many other 2.4GHz phone brands and models do. I only got lucky. There does not seem to be an easy way to tell which phone chipsets will interfere and which will not, even though all of them operate within the "same" frequency range.
2.4GHz is a band that is unlicensed, so anything can happen when you have so many manufacturers putting out phones, networking gear, gaming devices, microwave ovens, and other consumer devices all operating in the 2.4GHz unlicensed band. Sometimes devices just clobber each other.
There is a newer cordless phone standard operating at 5.8GHz. These phones have been in the stores for a while. They cost a little more, but the price has come down a lot in the past year. They are supposed to be unlikely to interfere with a 2.4GHz wireless network. But if you live within range of other homes and offices, you might still have to put up with interference from whatever devices your neighbors use.

  • IPhone 4s will not join Netgear wireless network at home

Since my upgrade to iPhone 4s & OS 5 my phone will not connect to wireless network @ home via a Netgear router: asks for password & then tells me it's an incorrect password. My iMac, iPad & MacBook are all able to join this network, as is my husband's iPhone (one generation older). In addition, my new phone will connect to wireless at work. Any help would be so welcomed!!

  • HP Photosmart Premium c309g wireless network printing problem with 64bit Windows 7

A problem exists where the c309g is installed on a wireless network where one of the PCs on the network is running 64bit Windows 7.  Amongst other things, the printer may print very slowly, appear disconnected or unavailable through the HP Solutions Centre and may not be pingable from any of the PCs on the network.  The problem will affect ALL the PCs on the network !
Network monitoring software will also show an enormous level of network traffic between the printer and the Windows 7 PC.  As soon as the Windows 7 PC is switched off, everything returns to normal.
    The problem is solved by disabling the HP Network Devices Support Service on the Windows 7 PC as follows;
Run services.msc from the Run command on the Windows 7 PC.  This will display the list of all the local services running on the PC together with Description, Status and Startup Type information for  each.
Scroll down the list until you see the HP Network Devices Support Service.
Right click on it and select Properties to bring up the Properties window.
Use the dropdown list to Change the Startup Type to Disabled.
Once disabled, the printer will start to work normally.  HP are aware of this problem which may be unique to the 64bit version of Windows 7.

Thanks but no luck... I tried it..... Got back from son's baseball game.. checked on printer - as in tried to have printer print something... nothing...   prior to going out I went ahead and deleted the 6  c309 print devices and reinstalled a new one and got the printer to work...  after the game it was back to ignoring print commands...  When I go to printers there again are 6 print devices for this printer - one titled HP Photsmart Premium C309 g-m... then 4 copies of that and then one version titled HP0AC58C (HP Photosmart Premium C309g-m).
As I just finished writting that... the printer came alive and started printing some previous jobs... so maybe it helped - not sure but what about the 6 versions of print devices?   I just checked the statuses of all the versions and the default is offline... the various copies have different amounts in que but have a pending status of pending deletion...  When I tried to make one of the other copies the default printer - it errors out with  0x00000709

  • Prepare my Wireless network for use with Windows 8

    Hello
My wireless network has the following:
         (2) Wireless ACS 5.2 (upgrading to 5.3 soon)
         (1) Wireless Control System 7.0.172.0
         (10) Wireless Controllers AIR-CT5508-K9 7.0.116.0 (Lic level: base)
    Most of the (150+) AP's are i3502 with some older 1131AG, 1142N, 1242AG
We are starting to see more devices with Windows 8
What is best practice for integrating Win 8 devices onto a Wireless network?

    Thank you for your reply.
Wireless Control System s/w would need to be upgraded.
What about the controllers and ACS?

  • Extend existing wireless network (long house) with Airport Express

Help !! I am trying to reconfigure my airport express to extend my wireless network (Long House)through my wireless ISP (Bigpond)modem (2701HGV-W Gateway) following the sudden and unexpected death of my Time Capsule, whose router was doing this job previously.
I am not technically savvy, but can follow simple, idiot proof instructions. All I seem to be able to do is join a wireless network....is this the same as extending it?

    Bob Timmons wrote:
    Hi Jolly Giant,
+what you could do is run a (long) Cat5 ethernet cable from the Gateway to your Airport Express (AE) in the far away location. if you then join the AE to your wireless network, wireless clients could access it via the wireless access point the AE provides.+
Sorry, but this is not correct. The "join" setting is only used if the Express will be connecting to the wireless network by +wireless only+.
With the Express connected by ethernet, the correct setting is "create a wireless network". The wireless must be configured with exactly the same name, radio mode, security, password, etc as the Gateway's network. But, the channel on the AirPort Express should be set to a value that is at least 5 settings away from the channel that the Gateway is using to minimize distortion. This type of network is known as a "roaming" network.
Connection Sharing on the Express must be set to "Off (Bridge Mode)".
okay, got it. thanks for letting me know - i'll keep that in mind ! (:-)

  • Extending a (non-Apple) Wireless Network through Ethernet with AirPort Expr

I have two Airport Express base stations and a Linksys Wireless Router/Modem - I want the AE's to extend the network in locations the Linksys can't reach.
I'm currently doing this through having the AE's set to "Create a wireless network" and set to "Bridge mode", they have the same SSID and WPA password as the Linksys.
Despite this, when I walk from one to the other, my laptop can't seamlessly hop from one to the other. I have to turn off AirPort and search again.
Can anyone help make this work?

Power everything down and then start the modem first and let it run a few moments, then start the Linksys the same way, your AirPort Express next, etc., and finally your computers.
If no luck, you might try matching up with WPA2 Personal. That is a more compatible setting among routers.
I assume that you are using the exact same Radio Mode on all devices. For example, 802.11 b/g
Sometimes security settings are just not compatible between different manufacturers. That may be the case here if you continue to experience problems. I've had the same problem that you have now in the past except with a Netgear router and the AirPort Express. The only way I could solve it was to replace the Netgear with an AirPort Extreme.

  • How do I extend a wireless network from SA520W with AP541N ?

    Hi,
I'm setting up a wireless network, based on a AP541N, and want to add one (or more) Access points to extend the wifi network.
For now, I have set-up both devices with the same SSID and keyphrase, but is this the correct way of setting up a larger Wifi network ? Note: the AP is connected via a POE connection, so it is not a wireless bridge I'm looking for.
Should I use the "cluster" features ? Not sure how it works...
All tips welcome, a step-by-step guide would obviously beat everything!
    Thanks

Try temporarily connecting via Ethernet to the AirPort Express (AX). After you configure the AX you can disconnect the Ethernet connection.
