Wireless network (Larger area)

Hello Everyone
I'm having trouble figuring out what the easiest/best way is to supply a wireless network to a somewhat large area (200mx60m).
The aim is that when someone is at the area he can connect his laptop, phone, tablet or other small devices with the network so he can have a basic internet connection (e.g.. checking emails, social networks).
At this point the way of doing things would be to have one router and connect multiple AP's on it with the same SSID,security and password. So whenever the signal gets to medium we place a new AP. But is there a limitation on how many times you can extend the AP's? Can u put them up wireless or is cabled preferred? Is it even possible this way.
Maybe there is a more simple solution for it so any suggestions are welcome!

It will be find if how many access points you will place in your home but on the flipside, the computer may not function properly because it might detect the SSID with the weaker signal. If it is possible in your end, it will be best to set a different ssid so that the computer will not be confused on which ssid to connect to.

You might be able to set up the SMTP server settings in Mail to authenticate with a password. That may get the email through.
In Mail Preferences, Accounts, select the account.
Click on the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) popup menu and select Edit SMTP Server List
Select the Server and then click the Advanced tab at the bottom.
Select Password authentication and add your details.
You might also want to set a custom port (even if it is one of the defaults)
This solution is normally for an email provider that will not let you send outside of your ISP network, which most prevent. They also must support password authentication of the SMTP server.

  • Ipad2 unable to connect to wireless network (ipad3 are OK).

Hi, we have setup a wireless network available for our customers with Web-Passthrough security. We have no issues with any customers' laptop and certain Blackberry devices but we do have issues with customers' ipad2 and some of newer Blackberry models (like Bold 9900). These units can see the wireless network, attempting to connect but with no success. Ipad3 have no issues. Majority of our customers are having ipad2 so wondering what could be done to solve this issue.
    Appreciate your help and input.

  • I have a mid-2010 iMac and just purchased a 2TB TC, can't join existing wireless network with AC standard so attached to iMac via ethernet with TC wifi turned off.  How do i access TC now? not showing up in disk utility or on desktop. working fine with TM

I have a mid-2010 iMac and just purchased a 2TB TC, I just found out that it can't join existing wireless network with new AC standard so attached to iMac via ethernet with TC's wifi turned off.  How do i access TC now? not showing up in disk utility or on desktop. It is working fine with TM.  My cheeper seagate drives etc kept crashing, so i didnt trust cheeper back up options anymore.  Connected those drives to TM via firewire and could see the drives and access them.
Also, I didn't want to bridge TC with my new fios router that I paid 100 dollars for, to get N speed and also paying 10 dollars more a month for fast speed.  I heard that bridging slows down everything and then there can be port issues with mail etc.  I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast. Getting over 50mbs downloads and over 30mbs uploads.  Plus everything in my home it connected to my fios router, airport express for music streaming, two apple tvs, vuezone camer system.  I really didn't want to monkey around too much with my system.  But are there other options to connect the new TC.  Can't find info anywhere for this and called apple who gave me the info above.  after hanging up, i see that i cant access my TC and I am wondering if i would have to reset it to turn wifi on again to make changes to the drive, turn off blinking light  or repair it in disk utility if it should become corrupted.
For other with similar issues i did solve some other problems: when i connected it to my ethernet port on my iMac wifi stopped working.  Found that I had to turn off the ethernet in the system>network screen, but then TM didn't see the TC so i restarted after changes and then it saw it.
Now a rant.  I can't believe in this wireless age that Apple would make a product that cant join a wireless net work.  The apple rep said i could return it and look for the previous TC that would join an existing wireless network.  Are we going backwards?
    Thanks!
    lennydas

Ok... it is getting a bit clearer but there are still some questions.
I connect to the internet via airport only and it is pretty fast.
I was assuming airport in this statement in your first post meant the TC or the Express.. but I now realise we are still in the mass confusion stage where apple calls everything wireless an airport. So what you mean is the airport internal card of the computer??
Also, I didn't want to bridge TC with my new fios router that I paid 100 dollars for, to get N speed and also paying 10 dollars more a month for fast speed.  I heard that bridging slows down everything and then there can be port issues with mail etc.
    I think this is mistaken.
Putting the TC in bridge mode plugged into your FIOS will not slow the network.. nor will it cause mail or port issues.. in bridge the TC is just a fancy WAP and switch plus the network hard drive.
If the computer is close it will be faster than the FIOS.
You can run both wireless networks with different names.. so it is clear which is which. But you can also setup roaming so the computers themselves pick which is the best wireless.
I tried extending the wireless net work and tried joining wireless network, but the TC kept crashing and I had to keep resetting the TC.  the Apple support person said these, extend wireless network and joint wireless network, are no longer a connection option with the new TC because of the new AC protocol.
    Thanks again!
You cannot extend to a non-apple wireless router.
You cannot use join a wireless network because when you do the ethernet ports will be cut off.
But that has not changed.. I don't think Apple support is correct.. there has been no change with the AC model.. it is simply a fact that apple routers do not work in join wireless mode other than as a dumb client. The same applies to AC as to the earlier version.. but I have asked another person to check this.
Join in the express is the only apple router that still allows an ethernet connection.
For now you best use of the TC is bridged to the FIOS. Wireless you can sort out between several options.

  • Can't connect to wireless network but wife can...

Hi. I've just bought a Macbook pro. I am trying to connect it to a wireless network. The macbook finds the network (and others), but after I give the correct password it says 'authentication failed'. The weird thing (to me) is that my wife can connect to the same network with her macbook with no problems. These are my Airport details (no working connection)

    Pretty similar......
We are both running 10.6.2 with all the latest sofwtware updates. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what might be up? The router is a Netgear DG834Gv5, again with the latest firmware. Security is WPA2.
    Thanks in advance,

    Two things I'd check first:
1 - in your router, do you have mac address filtering turned on? If so, add the mac address (Airport id) of your MacBookPro to the 'Wireless Station Access List' in your router. You can find your Airport id under *System Prefs > Network > Airport > Advanced > Ethernet* .
2 - in your MacBookPro, turn Airport OFF. Then go into *System Prefs > Network > Airport > Advanced.* In the Preferred Networks box, delete the wireless network you are having trouble authenticating with. Click OK, then Apply. Exit System Prefs. Then turn Airport ON. Find the network; re-enter your password. See if that fixes things.

  • My old PowerPC G4 no longer sees any wireless networks

My old PowerPC G4 no longer sees any wireless networks. The PowerPC and my new iMac was powered off for a week. When I powered them on, the iMac found the usual wireless networks that are seen around here but the PowerPC did not see ANY! Even though they sit next to each other!! The G4 worked fine before and was connected to the internet.
The G4 has an AirPort card in it and IS enabled. Is the problem with the card (how do I verify?) or did something get turned off on the re-boot?
BTW the AirPort card does shows up in the system info and has firmware version 9.52 but states that "wireless network not available" under the Current Wireless Network.
    How do I fix this?
    Please Help!

As this is an old G4, I presume you have a PCI network card.
I had a similar problem on my son's old G4. After a lot of messing around thinking it was a software problem, I discovered that the antenna was damaged and did not make a good connection to the card. I could get it to work intermittently by pushing it on. The solution was to buy a new card.
So try manipulating the antenna connection at the back of your mac to see if you can get a signal.

  • Access connections does not see wireless networks but can connect if you know the SSID

Running a Thinkpad x200 using windows 7 and Access Connections 5.42.
A few weeks ago i was traveling and was connecting to a hotel wireless network.
Could receive email but wasn't able to send email due to hotel port restrictions so long-story short version-- IT staff at hotel told me to connect via LAN. Which i did by simply plugging in LAN line to the thinkpad and to the hotel -- port -- no other changes. have done this a million times at home and elsewhere.
    All is well....
    until....
I get home and i notice that when i use access connections, it doesn't see any wireless connections (no icons in the radar screen). It automatically connects to my home network and i can use the home profile to connect.  Same for any connection that i know the SSID for -- i can't see it but i can connect to it.
But it doesn't show any icons during "find" or find again. It only shows the home icon i am connected to. If i disconnect and try to find wireless networks. It doesn't show any.
    So i know
    1) radio is working
    2) can connect via lan
    3) can connect to a known wireless if i know the SSID and either manually configure it or if i have the profile saved
    4) i have run antivirus, malwarebytes - etc -- all clean
    5) have rebooted, turned radio on off
    6) system restore doesn't help
    7)  all wireless networks are now invisible to radar screen. Have tried this at starbucks, around town - etc -- available wireless network icons are invisible
I'm not sure that hooking up LAN in the hotel did anything but it seems too coincidental. Also seem to recall a thread where this has been known to happen.
    Help!!!

First off, it sees the networks. That's good. You reset network settings which usually corrects a number of problems. Let's focus on your home network and getting connected to that.
    1. Reboot your router (just power it off for 10 secs). Try to connect. If it works, you are done. If not, step 2
    2. Reset your network settings again. However, this time log onto your network by tapping Settings > WiFi > Other and re-entering your network name, security settings, and password.
Check your connection by tapping the blue > next to the network name with the checkmark. If your IP starts with 169.x, then you are connected but your router is not issuing you an IP address. This leads to a couple of additional problem areas - WEP encryption and outdated router firmware.
If you continue to have problems, tell us which router/model, security settings used, etc.

  • Adding pc to encrypted wireless network

Hello - I just encrypted my airport wireless network. Previously the pc in our house had no trouble using the network. However, now it asks for the WEP key. I don't know what that is. I tried looking in the airport help files, but it doesn't tell me what to put in the pc so it can recognize. It does not accept the password I have chosen to identify the network, so it must be something else. Can someone help?
    Thank you!

ok - a bit more clarification.....my husband has a pc laptop, runs XP Pro. He doesn't want to print or share files (he doesn't have the need for that) since his other pc has a direct hardwire connection to the airport & he can utilize all the functions he needs that way.
He just wants the flexibility to be able to get online anywhere in the house for browsing & downloading.
However, we have found out our neighbors are using a wireless network - we are one of two we have seen online. Altho we don't do much financial stuff, we do use bill pay, so I'd rather not have that info accessible.
The password I used when I enabled the encryption is being rejected when he tries to put it in his pc. When he puts this password in it says:
"the network password needs to be 40bits or 104bits depending on your network configuration. This can be entered as 5 or 13 ascii characters or 10 or 26 hexadecimal characters."
I encrypted the airport at 128 bits....is that the source of the problem?

  • Wireless Network Settings not Retained

Signs - when the laptop is disconnected from the network (either when the computer goes into standby or is shut down) all of the wireless network configurations are lost and I can't work out how to save them.
    Network Setup:
    Router - Linksys WAG54G v.2
    Broadcast SSID - Disabled
Security Mode - WEP 128 bit 26 Hex
MAC address restriction - Enabled (I can connect to network so it's not this)
    Authentication Type - Auto
    Control TX Rate - Auto
Basically every time I need to connect to the network I have to enter in the SSID and the WEP Key. I've attempted to do this in Internet Connect, Network Preferences, and in the Airport menu. None of these give me the option to save the preferences.
At the moment I have the WEP key saved in a word document so I can copy and paste it in, but there's gotta be a better way than that!
    Any help would be appreciated

I'm also haveing the same problem, have you come across a solution yet?

  • Macbook Pro will not remember wireless network

We have two Macbook Pros and are having issues with one of them not finding and then not remembering a particular wireless network.  The other one works normally on this network, as do our iPad and iPhones.
The problem Macbook Pro will find a number of other wireless networks in the vicinity, but not the one we wish to connect with.  However, when the required information about the network is entered into the Network Preferences, it does see the network and will connect with it, until the computer is shut down.  When it is powered-up again, the Macbook will not find it, even though, in theory, it had been told to remember it and that network had been moved up to #1 in the order of priority.
The settings on both Macbooks are the same, so why can one find and remember the network and the other not?  What can I do about the problem?
    Help please!

Settings for wireless network connections are actually stored in two separate places on your Mac, so in addition to the correct advice offered by Jolly Giant, you will also need to delete old network listings in KeyChain Access.
Macintosh HD > Applications > Utilities > KeyChain Access
Locate the name of the wireless network that you want to delete and click it to highlight it
    Click Delete on your keyboard
It would be a good idea to go ahead and also delete the current connection as well in case it has become corrupted. This will clear out the old settings and when you next connect to the network and enter the password, the new settings will be preserved.

  • A "top" for wireless networks?

I would love to be able to have a top-like table for realtime information about the wireless networks that are around me.  Does something like this exist?

Have a look at iftop: http://www.ex-parrot.com/~pdw/iftop/  It only monitors an interface, but if you have something like openWRT setup on your router you can see all traffic passing into/out of your network in real time.

  • Solution to: n80 wireless network - no gateway rep...

    Hi
If you are trying to connect to a secure wireless network, i.e. the majority of home wireless networks, and are getting an error similar to "no gateway reply" there is a simple solution.
When you are entering the WEP key (your wireless network password) the phone defaults to a capital letter. Stupid I know. I fixed my connection by making sure I did not use a capital letter when there wasn't one in the password, as the WEP password is case sensitive.

    Hi There
No that's not the PRoblem, i've tried now everything i believe, changed from WEP to WPA and also tried without any security in my router (Siemens SE515 dsl) i can surf to google and also to ebay and many other pages, but for some reasons i also get this stupid " Gateway not responding " Message i start to believe that the Browser of the N80 is the Issue so i will try out Opera....
