Wireless network using Linksys

Hi. I've got a Linksys wireless router on my PC and my daughter has a Linksys Wireless-G USB network adapter. It worked fine with her laptop but now she's got a Mac Mini. Is it possible to plug the adapter into the Mac so she can connect to the web through my router?

Hello,
You've been most helpful, thank you very much indeed
You're quite welcome
Hey, if you want, go ahead and mark any of the answers you found helpful as helpful or solved. It's up to you.
But, anyway, I'm always happy to lend a hand and help when I can.
I did some looking to see if I could find a place to purchase the original AirPort card and adapter panel that would install it inside the Mac Mini G4, but unfortunately could not locate that.
But, I think that would be a good option if you could find one.
So, with that in mind, you might call Apple and see if they would be willing to sell you a kit that you could install yourself.
Or, you might even try a local Apple Authorized Service Provider.
A service center should be able to get the parts for you, and install it for you.
This is a replaceable part. So, they would have access to the parts for repairing damaged parts in other Mac Minis.
So, most likely they would be happy to install it for you if you paid for the parts and the service time. This would get you something that you would know is 100% compatible with your Mac.
Hope this helps.

I have a wireless network using Linksys's WRT54GR each is set as a wireless access point. The PC is working great on the network but the MAC is having troubles as it moves through the apartment. The MAC even shows connection to the correct access point but yet there is no internet. If we unplug the access point and plug it back in the MAC is re-establishing the connection. I checked the apple site and they recommended different channels on the network. I have tried this. I know the network is functioning because the PC is connecting without a problem. Any advice or ideas would be appreciated.

    try channel - either 1 or 11
    beacon interval - 50
    Fragmentation threshold - 2306
    RTS threshold - 2307
if this doesn't make any difference..try updating the drivers for the wirelss card on the MAC

  • HT5022 I'm trying to add a "new client" to my wireless network using Airport Utility, but I can't find that option in the new version.  I've downloaded all available updates of the OS and the utility..  Help!

I'm trying to add my HP wireless printer as a "new client" to my wireless network using Airport Utility, but I can't find that option in the new version.  I've downloaded all available updates of the OS and the utility..  Help!

Why would you need to ADD a new Client. Unless the APE sytem is completely different then any other Wireless router the printer should get an IP address from the router. That is IF the printer is setup to get an IP from the LAN DHCP server.
Now you may want to make that IP it does get a Staticly assign IP address so it never changes, which will screw up printing if it does change. But i don't know if you can do that with APE routers.

  • Hi I am hoping to add my 2 TB time capsule to my existing wireless network using cisco dpq 3925 modem. I have two mbp one running Yosemite and the other os 10.7.5

I have a time capsule 2TB model 1409. I would like to connect it to my existing wireless network (using a cisco DPQ 3925 modem). I have two mac book pro one running Yosemite and the other OS 10.7.5. The best I can do is to connect the TC to the Modem via ethernet. Have one of my MBP connect to the time capsule using a ethernet cable and have the TB set to bridge mode. In this configuration, both mbp and the iPad can detect the TC but when I try to connect it to the wireless network, using the same network name and password, the light flashes amber and I cannot detect the time capsule again.

    Correct..
The best I can do is to connect the TC to the Modem via ethernet.
The TC does not connect to non-apple routers by wireless.. well. It is possible but so poor a method that Apple seem to have eliminated it in the setup wizard.. I would take that as a good thing..
If you cannot use ethernet you have two choices..
Use another apple router that is plugged into the Cable modem.. eg a second hand Extreme Gen5 or the latest Express.. the Extreme is both cheaper and better.
Or you can use a set of EOP (homeplug) adapters.. but they cannot be guaranteed to work so you should buy from a place that allows returns.

  • Extend Wireless Network using a Telstra technicolor Gateway wireless Router to Airpot extreme but Airport will only except join not extend and I can not get a network on the Airpor Extreme ethernet ports but can ping Airport extreme from Technicolor Rout/

Extend Wireless Network using a Telstra technicolor Gateway wireless Router to Airpot extreme but Airport will only except "join a wireless network (which it does) not "extend a wireless network" (Led turns yellow and I can not get a network working on the Airpor Extreme ethernet ports but can ping Airport extreme from Technicolor Router.
    Airport gets it address DHCP.

Funny how I can ping the Extreme but the Hard Ethernet ports dont seem to work correctly.
When the AirPort Extreme is configured to "Join" a wireless network, the Ethernet ports are not enabled.
Oddly, the AirPort Express has a special feature that will allow it to to "Join" virtually any wireless network.....and the Ethernet port can be enabled. So, an Express would work for your purpose to provide an Ethernet connection to the media player. This assumes that the Express is located where it can receive a strong wireless signal from your main router.
Note that the Express will not provide any additional wireless coverage when it "Joins".

  • Setup for extending Sky wireless network using Airport Express or Time Cap

    Hi,
    Hi,
I have three Mac computers/laptops (iMac, MacBook Air and G4 PowerBook), all currently functioning via airport on a sky wireless network (Sky HD Sagem router) all backing up wirelessly to a Time Capsule 1TB which is also connected to the same wireless Sky network. At the top of my house signal strength is weak as you would expect. I would like to be able to extend the range of the sky routers signal which is on the ground floor (3 storey house). My original idea had been to setup a AirPort Express on the 2nd floor to extend the network, but I am unsure what steps I have to follow and whether I need to create a WDS network or not? I've seen some comments that say Sky & Apple hardware are not compatible and it's not possible to extend a Sky router/wireless network using a Apple Airport Express or Time Capsule. Can someone provide me with a step by step set of instructions on what I need to do to set this up? If a work around is required, again any advice would be very much appreciated!
    Many thanks,
    Eugene

    Welcome to the discussions!
Sky and Apple products are not compatible for the purpose of extending your network using wireless only.
If you could connect an ethernet cable from your Sky router to the AirPort Express, or if it's not possible to run an ethernet cable...take a look at a pair of ethernet powerline adapters to accomplish the same task by using the AC wiring in your home to transmit the ethernet signal.
If you configure the AirPort Express to "create a wireless network", this would in effect, extend your network by adding an AirPort Express that would be configured with the exactly the same wireless network name, security settings and password as your Sky router. The AirPort Express would also need to be configured as a "bridge".
Post back if you need more details about something like this.

  • How can I extend my wireless network using Airport Express and an Airport Extreme on BT Infinity?

I have BT Infinity and I am using the Time Capsule with Airport Extreme as my router. Working well (even on wireless). I want to extend the wireless network with an Airport Express, but I cannot work out the settings necessary in Airport Utility. I am using Mountain Lion 10.8.2 on a Mac Pro. Please help!

    BT,
I've read several of your posts, thanks for taking the time to share your wealth of knowledge.
I'm in a situation similar to the one described by 'scoutusmaximus'.  Seeking the flexibility of a standalone router, I finally upgraded my 4-yr old ATT DSL gateway (modem+router) to a Comcast standalone modem + the ASUS RT-AC66U: http://www.asus.com/Networks/Wireless_Routers/RTAC66U/
Typically, I stick with all things Apple but the ASUS router seemed fairly superior to the current-gen base station (on paper, anyway; time will tell when it comes to performance) so, for once, I jumped ship.  My plan was to extend the ASUS wired/wireless network using my TimeCapsule and 2 Airport Expresses in bridge mode, however, a google search turned up several unhappy customers that claim those devices don't play well with non-Apple routers, especially when it comes to 'extending' a network.
    Questions:
    1. Can I successfully extend the wired/wireless network created by the ASUS router using the 3 airport devices listed above w/out negatively impacting performance?  I'd rather have 1 wireless network as opposed to creating a new wireless network with the TC and then extending it with the AP Expresses... though I'd consider that option down the line if it came to that.
    2. Will the LAN ports on the TimeCapsule remain functional?
Btw, my house is wired so, I can reach all 3 devices via ethernet cable coming off of a central, managed switch.  Supposedly, you only lose the LAN ports on the TC if you extend wirelessly.
    Any advice would be appreciated.

  • How do I extend an existing wireless network using airport express?

    Hi all,
I am trying to extend existing wireless network using airport express, my main router is Belkin

Unfortunately, Apple's "extend" feature is designed to only work with other Apple routers if you are trying to "extend" using wireless only.
It is extremely unlikely that this feature would work with a router from another manufacturer using wireless only.

  • Extending wireless network using Time Capsule

    Hi guys,
I have been trying to sort this issue out for some time.
Basically I have a Thompson Wireless Router which connects to my ISP, this is downstairs broadcasting a wireless network to my house.
I want to put the Time Capsule upstairs, to extend the WLAN and also connect my Xbox over Ethernet.
No matter what I try I cannot get it to work, it ends up setting up 2 WLANs where the Thomson WLAN works (as there is an ISP connection) and the TC wont (as its not connected)
What I want is for the Thomson WLAN to be extended via the TC to allow my Xbox on to Live...
I also have a Mac Mini upstairs that would connect either via the TC WLAN or through ethernet.
Any help you can offer would be amazing
    Thanks
    Adam

If you are trying to "extend" the wireless signal from the Thompson router through the Time Capsule using wireless only, this is probably not going to work.
The reason for this is that Apple's "extend a wireless network" feature appears to be a proprietary technology that works only among other Apple devices. For that reason, it is highly unlikely that the Thompson router and Time Capsule would be compatible for the purpose that you desire.
If you are able to connect the Time Capsule to the Thompson router using an Ethernet connection, you could configure the Time Capsule to "create a wireless network" using the exact same wireless network name, security settings and password as the Thompson network. In addition, the Time Capsule must be configured as a "bridge" in Bridge Mode for this to work correctly.
If you cannot run the Ethernet cable,  you might want to look at a pair of Etherent powerline adapters to accomplish the same task by sending the Ethernet signal over the existing AC powerlines in your home.

  • Extending wireless network using airport express

    Greets all,
I'm trying to extend a wireless network in a two-storey apartment using TC and Airport Extreme.
The current setup is based on a Netgear N300 wireless router, which works fine upstairs but the signal is too weak to be useful downstairs. I have at my disposal a first-gen Time Capsule (TC) and a couple of Airport Express (AE) stations as well. I'd like to be able to extend the wireless network downstairs but of course the AEs won't talk directly to the Netgear router, so I'm guessing I need to use the TC somehow.
So far I've tried using the TC in bridge mode as well as a separate network via ethernet from the Netgear router, both of which worked but didn't extend the range - nor did it allow me the option of extending the TC network. In fact, all the searching I've done hasn't unearthed a solution to extend a wireless network using TC where TC is not the primary router.
Any help appreciated. I'm sorry if I haven't included all the necessary info off the bat.
    Airport Utility 6.3.1 installed.

They are necessarily in fairly close proximity to each other (due ethernet cable).
If the Netgear and TC are in close proximity to each other, there is really no reason to have both devices providing the same wireless signal......and a very real possibility that there will be wireless interference between the two products.
My suggestion and instructions assumed that the Time Capsule would be at least a few rooms away from the Netgear. If the close proximity setup does creates some issues, then it will be necessary to turn off the wireless function on the Netgear router.
Unfortunately, the older A1088 version of the Express cannot be used to extend the wireless network since it has no settings for that type of application.
Locate the A1264 about half way between the TC and the general area where you need more wireless coverage.
Power up the A1264 Express for a few minutes, then hold in the reset button on the device for 10 seconds and release. Allow a full minute to for the Express to restart to a slow, blinking amber light.
    Open up AirPort Utility
    Click Other WiFi Devices
    Click on AirPort Express
The utility will open up automatically and take a minute to analyze the products, then suggest that the Express be configured to "extend" the TC network.
Enter a device name that you want to use for the Express and click Next
The utility will set up everything for you. When you see the message of Setup Complete, click Done.
    That's it.

  • Bridge a wireless network using the dual radios?

I have an existing wireless network. It is from a Dlink wireless-n router, which shares my internet connection. I cannot connect to it using ethernet. It doesn't support WDS.
If I use an Airport Extreme with dual bands, can I do all of the following:
    1) Use the 2.4Ghz radio to connect to the Dlink wireless network using wireless-n.
    2) Use the 5Ghz radio to create a new wireless network using wireless-n.
    3) Have all of my MacBooks (using wireless-n 5ghz) connect to the 5Ghz network
If this is all successful, will the MacBooks have access to the internet? Will the Airport Extreme bridge the two networks together?

    Welcome to the discussions Daniel!
    1) Use the 2.4Ghz radio to connect to the Dlink wireless network using wireless-n.
    No
    2) Use the 5Ghz radio to create a new wireless network using wireless-n.
Yes if you connect the AirPort Extreme to the D-Link using an ethernet cable
    3) Have all of my MacBooks (using wireless-n 5ghz) connect to the 5Ghz network
Yes if the MacBooks can receive a strong enough signal
will the MacBooks have access to the internet?
Yes, if you connect the AirPort Extreme to the D-Link with a permanent ethernet cable connection and you configure the AirPort Extreme in bridge mode.

  • How do I create a wireless network using iMac as base station

How do I set up a wireless network using my iMac as the Base Station and boosting the signal through an Airport Extreme?
Physical connection would be DSL Modem> (ethernet) iMac >(wireless) Airport Extreme (as a wireless router for other Apple products i.e. TV, iPhone, etc.)

How do I set up a wireless network using my iMac as the Base Station and boosting the signal through an Airport Extreme?
Unfortunately, the wireless network that is setup from the iMac cannot be "extended".
Your setup will need to include two Apple routers and look like this:
                                                         > Ethernet to Imac
DSL Modem > Main Apple Router    >>>Wireless to nearby wireless devices
                                                         >>> Wireless to Extending Apple router
You may also connect the iMac to one of the Ethernet ports on the Extending Apple router if you wish

  • TS1398 have been connected to my wireless network using a netgear sky broadband router succesfully for a few weeks, suddenly can't connect, network is showing but no signal - all other wireless gadgets are connected just fine - including iphone - any idea

my ipad 4 has been connected to my wireless network using a netgear sky broadband router succesfully for a few weeks, suddenly can't connect, network is showing but no signal - all other wireless gadgets are connected just fine - including iphone - any ideas?

    Some things to try first:
    1. Turn Off your iPad. Then turn Off (disconnect power cord for 30 seconds or longer) the wireless router & then back On. Now boot your iPad. Hopefully it will see the WiFi.
    2. Go to Settings>Wi-Fi and turn Off. Then while at Settings>Wi-Fi, turn back On and chose a Network.
    3. Change the channel on your wireless router (Auto or Channel 6 is best). Instructions at http://macintoshhowto.com/advanced/how-to-get-a-good-range-on-your-wireless-netw ork.html
    4. Go into your router security settings and change from WEP to WPA with AES.
    5.  Renew IP Address: (especially if you are droping internet connection)
        •    Launch Settings app
        •    Tap on Wi-Fi
        •    Tap on the blue arrow of the Wi-Fi network that you connect to from the list
        •    In the window that opens, tap on the Renew Lease button

  • Airport Express used to extend wireless network from Linksys?

I've been asked if I can straighten out a wireless mess at a local church. They have a wireless network in their office (a seperate small building) using a linksys transmitter.
The church (a seperate building 50 yards away is where they want to extend the network to.
Currently, I can read the network there on whqat they have now but something is misconfigured and the manufacturer is being of little assistance.
Has anyone used an Apple Airport Express to extend a 3rd party wireless router? Ive decided it may just be worth the cost to dump the relay they have and simply buy an airport express.
    Suggestions?

The Linksys WRT54G and WRT54GS (not latest versions v5) are the only 2 known Linksys routers compatible with Apple's WDS.
So if you are using one of those routers you should be able to do it.
If you are using a different router it probably will not work.
