Wireless: No IP (BTHomeHub)

Hi,
I have an iMac 24" (early 2008) which has been working perfectly with my router however the other day it started to show that it was connecting to the router but not actually getting online (in various cases it kept giving the error messages, No IP or Self-Assigned IP).
I've tried everything suggested on other discussions and still am having no luck.
I should also point out that I have another iMac (original G5) connected to the internet through the same router (wireless) and it's working fine.

A self-assigned IP usually means that it is not really connecting to the network. Sometimes this has to do with a kink in your Firewall.
Go to System Prefs/Security/Firewall and drop the Firewall by checking Allow all incoming connections. See if DHCP will now assign a LAN IP in System Prefs/Network. If so, return to System Prefs/Security/Firewall and check Set access for specific service and applications. Does it maintain the connection?
Technically, if you have a modem and a router or a gateway (modem/router combo) your LAN is safe behind one of their their firewalls. Multiple firewalls can cause conflicts and other issues.

  • Wireless printing via BThomehub

Just got BT homehub which I am using for my wireless broadband, but it also states it can do wireless printing. I've connected the HP1205 psc to the hub via USB but when I try and print nothing happens. New to mac. (panther 10.3.9)
    Any ideas

Do you know what printing protocol they use?
Is there Mac support? In other words they provide guidelines for Mac and your printer isn't working or they don't provide guidelines?

  • BT Home Hub 3 and Ipod Touch

This absolutley makes my blood boil. Im on the app store, or a webpage and the connection just goes off, and on, and off, and on. Over and over again. It just drops all the time, whether im doing something on it or not. Does anyone else have this problem or know how to fix it?

I'm wondering if your wireless is suffering from interference of some sort, neighbours wireless signal etc.
I would move the HH3 OFF of it's Automatic wireless setting and set it to a permanent wireless channel.
http://bthomehub.home/  log in then go to advanced settings then wireless and change the "automatic" to a specific wireless channel number (Least used/clear channel) and apply.
You can Identify an empty/least used wireless channel to move to, by using a free PC software Innsider2 http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/

I'm posting this on behalf of my neighbour who has a home hub which has been serving two computers(he's been transferring files from old to new)His old computer still has full connection while his new touch screen has not.I seem to remember seeing something about home hub exceed on the bottom of his screen a couple of days ago.It says his (new)computer is not connected but we've checked all leads .Sorry to be vague but it's a bit of "blind leading blind "so all help as simple as poss please Thankyou
    he has unlimited broadband

Thankyou imjolly I scurried across the road but when I click where you say it says ...

  • BTHomeHub - iPhone wireless connection issue

I recently downloaded Documents to Go, and discovered that the desktop sync application cannot sync with my iPhone. This seems to be caused by settings on my BTHomeHub wireless router - can anyone suggest what the problem is?
    I have checked the following:
1 - the Remote app cannot connect to ITunes either, on my Mac or on my PC (With Bonjour recently installed)
    2 - I've tried restoring and reinstalling applications etc;
3 - Remote app works if i simply use my Mac to create a network - suggests isolated to the Homehub
4 - I've tried the troubleshooting tips on the Dataviz site - eg, confirmed mac and iPhone are on same network.
    Thanks

This appears to be a basic flaw of the iPhone, most likely purposely created by Apple to discourage file sharing between iPhone/iPod users, and continue to keep everyone coming to the iTunes store.
As a long-time user of Windows smartphones and PDAs, it's ridiculous how much Apple forces you to go through to get the simplest file-sharing tasks. I'm a recent purchaser of an iPhone, which I love for the things it does great, but file-sharing isn't one of them.
I have downloaded numerous apps from the Itunes app store which sound great (Documents2Go, mbPointer, eWallet, iPresenter, etc.)...but they either don't work (because they can't simultaneously pair the iPhone and your laptop on the same wireless connection, or do so randomly and inconsistently with absurdly complex chains of steps required).
Apple should be ashamed of themselves for frustrating the heck out of its iPhone users. $300 and $60/month is a lot to pay for torture. Yeah, I love certain iPhone functions...but wireless connections and file sharing totally stink.

  • Wireless connectivity issue with BThomehub 3

Just installed BT homehub 3.  All other devices working ok (MacAir, ipad, iphones) but not Timecapsule.  Scans but can't find it.  Any one else suffering from this?  Worked fine with homehub1. Scanned, found, connected & backed up.   Now getting can't find it message. Aargh!

  • Wifi not working on BT Home wireless network

Can anyone help? I have contacted Apple, who suggested the problem lies with BT. I have contacted BT - surprise, surprise, the problem lies with apple! I have a BT wireless broadband that works fine with my home computer. My iphone, which works in all other respects, can't get on to this network. It recognises that the network exists, I can "join" it, and the wifi symbol appears at the top of the iphone screen, but when I try to access the internet it either reverts to Edge (if there is sufficient signal) or a "can't find server" error message appears.
In "settings" the ip address begins "169", which I believe is wrong, but can't see how to fix it.
    Many thanks

ok jpaddle i think i might have solved it.
the password you need to use is not any of the passwords that you normally use to access the internet from your home computer. rather, the password you use is one of the "wireless key" numbers which are printed on the back of the white plastic HomeHub box.
but first you will have to reset the password settings on your iphone. this is how to do it.
    1. on your iPhone, go into "settings". then go into "wi-fi". with "wi-fi" switched on, choose the network that you want to join [ie your BT Homehub]. press the blue arrow directly on the right hand side of your chosen network. this will take you into the settings of your chosen network. press "forget this network".
you have now reset the password settings for this network.
    2. go back to the screen where you can choose your network. choose your BTHomeHub network again. it will ask for your password [again].
    3. the password that you should enter is the "Wireless Key" serial number [a set of letters and numbers] of "BT HomeHub Wireless Settings" - this password is printed in a grey area on the back of the white plastic Homehub Box.
ie you do not enter the password that you normally use to access the HomeHub settings as an administrator,
you do not enter the password that your wireless home computer normally uses to access the internet via the Homehub, and
you do not use the "wireless key" in "BT Fusion Settings" [which is also on the back of the Homehub plastic box but in a white square...]

  • Infinity won't work wirelessly with Ubuntu OS

I'm running Ubuntu Netbook Edition and upgraded my BT broadband to Infinity on 28.12.11, using the same HomeHub3 that worked perfectly well with the old Total service.
It doesn't work, wirelessly. I can get an apparently strong connection, but its agonisingly slow. At the same time, an ethernet connection works well, When I switch from one to the other and test the speed, I can watch the bandwidth fall away (i.e.: it isn't immediately disconnected.)
Nobody at BT can or will help, telling me that Ubuntu is 'unsupported' (i.e.: it's my problem). I reported this problem to BT - ref: xxxxxx-xxxxxx - via its complaints form on 28.12.11, but have had no response.
I've spent much time this past week on internet help forums. It transpies that BT has known about this issue with Ununtu for six months, but has apparently done nothing about it and cannot suggest a solution.
Suggested workarounds from other Ubuntu users involve manually reconfiguring one's connection, but my netbook won't allow me to apply the changed settings, or to change the router settings from N to G tech., but that only worked temporarily for me and, besides, my netbook is only a couple of year old.
When I was sold Infinity, nobody mentioned that it doesn't work with Ubuntu. Frankly, I feel it was mis-sold as I intended to increase the bandwidth of my Total account and was persuaded to take Infinity on the grounds that it's a superior service for the same price. Not from where I sit, it isn't.
The only solution I can see is to get BT to switch me back to their Total service, which suited me fine. I'm going to get their engineer to come back and uninstall Infinity. I will also complain to Offcom, as this situation could easily have been avoided had the BT sales person told me that Infinity won't work wirelessly with Ubuntu.

Firstly your negotiating skills with BT are far better than mine....
"....Total account and was persuaded to take Infinity on the grounds that it's a superior service for the same price"
I was on BT Total BB and had to pay an extra £2 pm for Infinity and then an extra £4.75pm uplift of the calls package to give me the same anytime calls I had previously.... And had to re-start another 18month contract!!! Ohhh well.
Right onto the problem... Webby's suggestion of making sure your on a clear or least used wireless channel is good advice.
Here is the link to the free software http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/
    Have a look at a demo,- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pf2kZCfYTxI
To be honest I would move your HH3 from the Automatic setting to a fixed wireless channel as they seem to work better like that.
If your Operating System won't work with Inssider I would then just try a different channel starting at 1 and work up... seeing how things go.
Regarding setting your HH3 to wireless g, that is a very backward step as the most you'll get over that would be around 20Mbps depending on your distance from hub etc.
Couple of pics comparing my speed test over wireless g and n in THIS POST.
Another thing I would try is a wireless n USB adapter... just in case your m/c is only g
Links of how to identify what yours is and pictures of the difference in the "Network Sharing Centre".. 54Mbps being g and anything above is wireless n....
Wireless n gives the best speed assuming your Infinity download IP is more than 20Mbps. Also wireless n signal is more robust penetrating walls etc.
There are links to the type of wireless n adapters I use... Picture of one HERE, (Don't need the extender cable shown in that picture).
    wwwebber's post was very useful.-
"I use Ubuntu on my laptop with BT Infinity & HH3 with no problems at all. BT is not at fault here - they do not support Ubuntu."
Confirming Infinity and Unbunto do work...
You say ".....but my netbook won't allow me to apply the changed settings, or to change the router settings .... but that only worked temporarily for me......"
As changing settings worked temporarily you must have been able to log into your HH3.
If you really can't log in can you borrow a friends netbook running windows to get logged in perhaps?
Log in,- http://bthomehub.home/html/home/home.html go to Advanced settings, wireless. and change Channel settings from Automatic to a channel number then click on Apply.
I would place your laptop near to the HH3 and move the HH3 wireless channel to a clear channel or start at channel 1.
Try to get a good wireless n speed..... example of mine 37Mbps  over http://www.speedtest.net/
Then when you have a reasonable speed move your laptop away... you will notice a drop over distance that's normal.
I am 20' away from my HH3 and get 37Mbps through a plasterboard wall.

  • Home Hub 3 Wireless Problems (V100R001C01B031SP09_...

    Dear all,
I am a new BT infinity customer but have had about 5 different providers and about 7/8 wireless routers in the past - never had FTTC.
BT infinity on a wired connection works great and I get approximately 65mbps (prediction 76mbps) which I'm happy with. The wireless through HomeHub3 is closer to 10-20mbps and most annoyingly it keeps dropping out. When I say dropping out I get the following:
    http://bthomehub.home/html/hurl/800_auto_start.html
The blue lights are all on the Home hub and my wireless devices still show a connection to the wireless but just no access to the internet.
The very nice Indian call centre woman says its my Wifi going down and its because there is loads of equipment around it. THis is the same position that all my other wifi routers had and no problems with any of them.  I am trying to work out how to move the HH3 but to be honest, unless there is something I am doing wrong, then I probably need to buy a wireless router.
I have been to http://www.btinternet.com/~cbeddoe/forumhelp/speed/hh3replace.html and any comments on these routers would be appreciated.
I suppose what is different here is that I am using the new type B homehub but it is causing me problems.
ANy help or thoughts would be appreciated.
    HSB
p.s. should i really expect a 50mbps differential between wired and wireless?

Its usually the default gateway address that gets corrupted, and this prevents the computer resolving addresses outside of your own network.
You can check this by looking at your wireless adapter network setting and seeing if the default gateway is 192.168.1.254.
As for the choice of router, any decent cable router should perform fine. Take a look at the thread that I reference on my home hub replacement page.
Wireless itself, can prove quite unreliable a higher speeds.

  • HH4 - can't connect to it via ethernet or wireless

I'm struggling with intermittent fault - it happened on a HH3, but same problem is now beginning to repeat on a replacement HH4 I was sent.
When fault manifests itself (lets call it "faulty mode") I cannot connect wired or wirelessly to HH - I cannot raise the Homehub Admin page either via "bthomehub.home" or "192.168.1.254" and that is true for all It devices in the house (Win xp box, Win7 laptop and a rasp pi).  When this fault is apparent there is no internet access, and pure wifi devices (kindles and android phones) all are unable to access internet, and an ethernet connected youview box also loses connectivity to internet.
However - HH is obviously still working to an extent, because a both wireless and ethernet connected devices can all interact on the network, files on the NAS remain streamable and browsable by everything that needs to connect.
I have FON, and that still operates correctly when the HH is in "Faulty mode" - ie my wireless devices can all connect through it to the internet, and that FON connection is definitely coming from my HH not from a neighbours - if I power down the Hub I have no FON connections showing up in any of my devices.
HH has all the lights showing properly...when in faulty mode the devices I can browse to on the network have 169.type Ip addressess rather than 192. addresses.
Reseting the Hub and or powering it on and off sometimes makes the fault go away, but often it doesn't.  Factory reset sometimes cures it, but again often it doesn't.  System has sometimes gone into faulty mode whilst just working away sweetly, with no It equipment being powered up/down/connected/disconnected. I've tried tricks like clearing caches  used different browsers chrome/FF/IE but no avail.
I noticed this initially with a HH3 - that got gradually worse (more faulty mode incidents until it remained in faulty mode) BT sent me a HH4 about 1 month ago as a replacement, now the same symptoms are appearing on my HH4 (twice in 3 days)...so what's the problem, is it my settings/something I should be doing, or is it a duff HH4 as well.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I think a clue to what is happenning is the 169.xxx.xxx.xxx IP addresses.
These show a failure of the connecting device to obtain a valid DHCP IP address from the router, and the 169.... gets auto-assigned by the device itself. On a network, devices all with 169-type addresses can communicate with each other, as you've found out.
So the problem that needs fixing is with the DHCP server in the router, which is not serving valid IP addresses when requested.
Here are two things you can try, maybe do the first with your PC and the second with another device, see which works better for you:
    - Assign a static IP to the device by setting it in Windows. Set it outside the router's DHCP range but with the same first three parts to the IP. eg 192.168.1.201. There's a guide here.
    - In the HH DHCP admin pages, reserve a fixed IP for another of your devices, using its MAC address, again outside the DHCP range. While you're at it, set the lease renewal time to its maximum.
If those don't work, send the blooming thing back!

  • POOR wireless range

I have a white 13" macbook which i bought about 6 months ago. We have the new BT home hub wireless router (the black V.2 model). I can get the network no problem in the adjacent rooms but as soon as i go upstairs i get nothing. Can anyone explain why my range is so poor??

    Hi sutton185,
    Welcome to the forum.
There are a lot of variables that can affect the "performance" of the range of your wireless router. Location of the router, interference from other electronic equipment (telephone, TV, radio etc) and walls are just some that immediately spring to mind.
In these situations, one of the first things I would do is change the wireless channel and/or the location of the router. If the symptoms still remain, you may need an additional wireless router (like Apple's Airport Express) which will be configured in WDS mode and act in extending the wireless range.
To change the wireless channel you'll need to log in to your router. With the BTHomehub simply fire up a web browser and enter 192.168.1.1 in the URL field. Click on Advanced... in the left list and Advanced... again. The default username is admin and the password is admin again. Then select Wireless from the Advanced submenu on the left and on the right, at the top, you'll see the following menu items: Settings, Encryption, MAC Address Control, Repeater. Ensure that Setting is selected and from the drop down menu in the Channel field select a different channel and click Apply. You may have to experiment with different channels; try Channel 11 first and work from there.

  • Setting up wireless first time on my laptop

Am having terrible problems it says it lilited or no connectivity and something about the ip address can anyone help am not particularly computer savvy

Go into the hub admin panel and turn off the WPA & WPA2 encryption , then see if it connects, if it does then turn it back on and enter the key again.
Follow this link to access the hub: http://bthomehub.home/. Then go to settings/advanced settings/wireless/security to switch the WPA & WPA2 encryption off and on. (Only swith it off while you try this DO NOT leave it swithed off afterwards)
Hopefully it will let you connect and obtain the IP address automatically.

  • Apple TV ok connecting wireless to HomeHub 2 but n...

Hi - just got BT HomeHub and works ok (although waiting for the throttle to support Vision but more on that if it's an issue
I have AppleTV and a Mac Pro (used to work fine on Sky using their Sagem on WEP) and want to now connect to my new HomeHub 2, but with either WEP or WPA Apple TV can't get itself an internet connection - although it connects to the wireless network fine.
All other devices in the house are grabbing internet wirelessly no problem.  Just the Apple TV that is getting no link to the Internet.
Is there anything else I should be doing to the HomeHub before I can expect an internet connection for my AppleTV?
Did search the forums here but nothing specific to this issue
    Thanks all
    Rakk

Try going to rouetr config page (http://bthomehub) going to settings, advanced, application sharing and forwarding the ports that Apple TV uses. I don't think its on the ''supported apps'' list so u need do it manually. Im sure u will figure it out its simple if u not tech savvy.
if you have trouble figuring out how to manually add apple TV as an app and assigning it to the device go to www.portforward.com
If you done this. Try disabling the routers Firewall and see if ti works. Never used apple TV can it be plugged in using a wire? try this just for troubleshooting, plug direct into Homehub and see if it works. Let us here at forum know.

  • Orange light on wireless icon

On my home hub the wireless icon is on orange but I am still able to connect to the Internet wireless
I have the black hub and it has been fine since installed a couple of years ago
I have tried resetting it and bt broadband desktop help cannot find a problem but the orange light remains

Hi and thanks for the replys
    No problem
It is the homehub 2 I have and have managed to encrypt the wireless by using the hub manager
    good
I selected wpa and put in a new password not the wpa key on the back of the hub.
hopefully with a random combination of numbers and letters?
Can anyone tell me if this is the strongest encryption you can have on the homehub 2 because I noticed options of wpa 2 and other settings to encrypt it.
WPA and WPA2 is the default setting and IMO would be better. You can read about WPA / WPA2 here - http://technet.microsoft.com/en-gb/library/bb878054.aspx
I am wondering how the security settings were disabled it is placed out of view and only myself or my wife have access to it and neither of us have adjusted the settings.
Could be a faulty hub or the original wireless security was hacked and was turned off to simplify multiple users gaining access or some other reason.
We have had a few power cuts in the area not sure if thats to blame
doubt it unless the hub was updating at the time of the power cut. This can send the hub doolally
if anyone has any ideas how the security came to be disabled it would be appreciated.
    as above?
You could enter your hub manager - http://bthomehub.home/
    click A-Z (upper right corner)
click H, then click Home Network
You'll be asked to and need to input your password at this point
    Look at the wireless connections-
    are there multiple entries?
are they all for your own computer(s)?

  • Problems with 2.4ghz wireless dropout.

Hi, I've recently had problems with the wireless signal from my HH4.
When using the laptop the signal would occasionally drop out and return with no obvious reason at all. This became more frequent and when I looked for the router via the wifi it wasn't there. Every neighbours wifi is found but not the HH4. It was only the laptop that would drop the signal. Mobiles in the house were still connected.
This led me to think the wifi card in the laptop was messing up, so I installed a new usb dongle, but this could not find the HH4 either.
After a reset I looked at the settings of the router. The laptop was assigned to 2.4ghz and the phones were assigned to the 5ghz channel.
I reset the router again and disabled the 5ghz channel. All was fine for around 20 minutes. The signal dropped and nothing was connected.
I have ensured that the router was on a 'quiet' channel. The router hasn't been moved in the house. Its in the master socket and I have changed the filters.
Another reset to be able to use the 5ghz channel. This will keep the wife happy.
So is this a problem with the router? Will BT replace? Or do I buy another dongle that is 5ghz enabled and live with the fact the HH4 is a bit broken? I've only had it three months.
    Any help/advice gratefully received.
    Thanks
    Matt.
**EDIT** I have no issues with speed when connected to either channel (when the 2.4 is working)

    Hi Mattb26,
Welcome to the forum. To make sure you are connecting to the 2.4GHz you could try changing the network name (SSID) for the 5GHz band.
To change the Hub 4 SSID name:
Open your web browser on a device connected to the Hub and go to http://bthomehub.home to open the Hub manager
Click on Advanced Settings and enter your Hub admin password when prompted. The default password can be found on the label on the back of the Hub
Click on Continue to Advanced Settings
Click on Wireless, and then 5GHz
Change the 'Wireless SSID' to a new name e.g BTHub4-xxxx-5GHz
2.4GHz 'Wireless SSID' will remain unchanged i.e. BTHub4-xxxx
Click Apply to save the changes
After a few minutes you should see two Hub 4 SSIDs in the list of networks on your device.
    Thanks
