Wireless on an eeepc 901

Hi,
I'm not sure if it is the correct way to start a new thread for my problem. Feel free to merge it with the "Arch on eeepc 901"-thread
I have installed wicd and 2 kernels: stock and zen-eee901-1G. Both detect my wireless device as ra0, and connecting to a wired network trough wicd works fine, but when i try to connect to a wireless network wicd displays "obtaining an ip address" for about a minute but with no success, no matter if the network is wep, wpa or open.
lsmod says that "rt2860sta" is loaded my rc.conf is the following:
MOD_AUTOLOAD="yes"
MODULES=(atl1e snd-mixer-oss snd-pcm-oss snd-hwdep snd-page-alloc snd-pcm snd-timer snd snd-pcsp snd-hda-intel soundcore)
USELVM="no"
HOSTNAME="cocomero"
eth0="dhcp"
INTERFACES=(!eth0)
gateway="default gw 10.1.1.1"
ROUTES=(gateway)
DAEMONS=(syslog-ng !network crond dbus wicd netfs)
i would be very thankful for any suggestions.

Hi.
Airport is about as plug and play as it gets. Click the Airport icon, select the network, enter the PW if appropriate. Connected! If the signal is intermittent then I'd urge you to check the Airport connection again. Make sure that the contacts are clean inside the iBook, the card is seated properly and re-check the antenna.
See http://support.apple.com/kb/TA21525?viewlocale=en_US for a diagram.
If the connections are good and the signal is still intermittent then the problem is one or more of:
a) The Airport card itself is faulty. Test it in another known-good machine if poss.
b) The connections inside are damaged/clogged with dust/debris. Possible as you've only recently fitted the AX card on a 4½ yr old machine.
c) The antenna wire is damaged, possibly at the hinge. Try and borrow a known-good AX card to test.
Probably somethng I've forgotten...
Good luck,
Adrian
Edit: p.s. The poster in This thread thought he'd attached the antenna wire correctly too

  • Eeepc 901 fan not working

Hello everyone! I installed Arch on my EeePC 901 and everything seems to run smoothly, until I noticed that the fan is not working. I did a little search on the forums, to check if someone already had to face something similar but with no success.
This is the output of pwmconfig:
    # pwmconfig revision 5857 (2010-08-22)
This program will search your sensors for pulse width modulation (pwm)
controls, and test each one to see if it controls a fan on
your motherboard. Note that many motherboards do not have pwm
circuitry installed, even if your sensor chip supports pwm.
We will attempt to briefly stop each fan using the pwm controls.
The program will attempt to restore each fan to full speed
after testing. However, it is ** very important ** that you
physically verify that the fans have been to full speed
    after the program has completed.
    Found the following devices:
       hwmon0 is acpitz
       hwmon1/device is coretemp
       hwmon2 is eeepc
    Found the following PWM controls:
       hwmon2/pwm1
Giving the fans some time to reach full speed...
    Found the following fan sensors:
       hwmon2/fan1_input     current speed: 0 ... skipping!
There are no working fan sensors, all readings are 0.
Make sure you have a 3-wire fan connected.
You may also need to increase the fan divisors.
    See doc/fan-divisors for more information.
This is the output of fancontrol:
    Loading configuration from /etc/fancontrol ...
    Error: Can't read configuration file
And this is the output of sensors:
    Adapter: Virtual device
    temp1:        +62.0°C  (crit = +85.0°C)
    coretemp-isa-0000
    Adapter: ISA adapter
    Core 0:       +18.0°C  (crit = +90.0°C)
    eeepc-isa-0000
    Adapter: ISA adapter
    fan1:           0 RPM
I'm pretty a newbie and I don't know what to do, is there someone who can give me some advice please?
    Thanks to all.

Thank you for your answer, sorry but I can't check the forums too often...
The Wiki page about my model dosen't give any advice on this subject.
I installed the eeepc-fancontrol package, the daemon is running but the fan is still dead

  • Eeepc-901 usb mouse

    Hey there!
I am working for 2 day already to set up arch on my brand new eeepc-901 (w016) and i've got everything to work finally but now my mouse aint working anymore.. althrough it was working till now and i didnt change anything in xorg.conf..
im using kernel-eeepc-901 based on kernel .30 and arch with xfce gui.
in xorg im using /dev/input/mice (it worked till now)
Hal recognizes other kind of usb devices automatically.
    what should i do?
    thankss,
    with respect,
    dvl

    Hi.
I have an eeepc, but I use the core kernel 2.6.30.
I would give to you only a suggestion: have you installed xf86-input-mouse ?

  • [SOLVED] No wireless on my EeePC 900

Last night I decided to try a full system upgrade (pacman -Syu). I figured upgrading the kernel might negatively affect the delicate balance I had achieved when I initially installed Arch--at least in regards to my wifi--but I had heard that the newer kernels worked much better with Eee's. After rebooting my upgraded system, my wireless was no longer working.
    # dhcpcd wlan0
    dhcpcd: version 5.0.2 starting
    dhcpcd: wlan0: waiting for carrier
    dhcpcd: timed out
I've heard from multiple people that Arch with the stock kernel works out of the box with EeePC 900s, but I get this error every time. My madwifi drivers are up to date.
    Any ideas? Thanks in advance!

i've also heard the stock kernel is good, but kernel-eee from toofishes repo is just too easy to pass up.  i'd recommend that, it's maybe a fifteen minute process to get going and you can just leave your exiting grub entry in menu.lst to go back to stock if it doesn't work out.
    add his repo to pacman.conf:
    [eee]
    Server = http://code.toofishes.net/packages/eee
    install via pacman -S kernel-eee
    adjust /boot/grub/menu.lst
    # (0) Arch Linux
    title Arch EEE Kernel
    root (hd0,0)
    kernel /vmlinuzeee root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/74398cff-692f-435e-ab0a-b101c50bc302 ro elevator=noop
    initrd /kernel26.img
    # (1) Arch Linux
    title Arch Stock Kernel
    root (hd0,0)
    kernel /vmlinuz26 root=/dev/disk/by-uuid/74398cff-692f-435e-ab0a-b101c50bc302 ro elevator=noop
    initrd /kernel26.img
    then just reboot.
with this kernel i have MODAUTOLOAD set to NO, i manually load ath5k, mac80211, and cfg80211, and i use netcfg to manage profiles.  i have perfect wireless bahavior and functional two-finger scroll (w/o a xorg.conf).  these things i did not have with the stock kernel.
    it's worth a try.

  • [SOLVED] "Loading Modules" Slow after Latest Upgrade (EeePC 901)

After the latest upgrade, my EeePC is taking an incredibly long time (20+ seconds) at the "Loading Modules" stage of the boot process. I cannot find any error messages, and after the pause, the machine boots normally. This process used to be almost instantantaneous before the upgrade. The modules being loaded are rfkill and eeepc_laptop.
    Can anyone help?
    Thanks in advance

  • [SOLVED] Eeepc 901 and 2.6.32 upgrade.. Black Screen!

I've just updated the kernel 26 package and.. After udev start all goes black! It's not a Xorg issue, because i've to start it manually.. Any idea??

  • Arch on Asus EEE 901

I want to submit this new thread as a continue for old Asus EEE PC thread and targeted on 901 models and similar
    http://bbs.archlinux.org/viewtopic.php?id=39375&p=1
I now let the admins handle that, maybe they mark this as duplicated, but please if so, create something similar. 1000 post thread is not so kind for newcomers and also if there became discuss on little bit different models.
The best will be to create special Archlinux forum subcategory for EEE (and similars), because of its popularity.
So I suggest continue here with discussing on EEE 901 model.
    Regards, Robert.

So after some tweaking I have nice resulets!!!!
I have prepared zen-sources based kernel for eeepc 901
based on 2.6.26-zen2 (will test 27-rc later)
    package ready to install:http://robertek.brevnov.net/files/linux … pkg.tar.gz
and building essentials (the PKGBUILD still needs soome polishing in git part, but works, using prepared package is lot easyes because of GIT)
    http://robertek.brevnov.net/files/linux … ee.tar.bz2
    So what are the results:
    1) everything working as common kernel-eee901
    2) kernel tweaks patches that comming from zen (BFQ io-sheduler, CFS tunables, 1G-lowmem, ....)
    3) tuxonice - suspend to file (dont have time to test this, will be fine if someone test that and write tutorial)
    4) "eee" module for seting FSB on eee's!
I have tryed play with FSB settings and the results are ~10h runtime (acpi estimate) (5.2W) usable for all sort of low cpu usage. (fsb 50, low voltage, => ~400MHz) So let say 8-9h realy possible (someone should test it:) ).
I allways test this with devices such as wlan disabled.
fsb is set through /proc/eee/fsb and the format is "fsb divisor low/normall voltage"
I sugest add this to start scripts
    echo 100 50 0 > /proc/eee/fsb
I have tested various running conditions and no problem running on low voltage (not overclocked)
fsb is no problem 50-110 (I havent tested more extreme values)
and divisor 50 (dont know what it is exactly do)
Notice: suspend resets fsb to default "100 50 1" so have to be reset after that

  • Acpi-eeepc-generic: adding a new hotkey

I would be grateful for any advice on how to do this. I have tried to find documentation, googled, and done some experiments without success.
I want to add Fn+F10 to toggle the webcam on the EeePC901. I have run the script manually, and it works fine. I have tried adding KEY_Fn_F10="00000016" to /etc/acpi/eeepc/models/acpi-eeepc-901-events.conf, then turning on "KEY_SHOW=1" in /etc/conf.d/acpi-eeepc-generic.conf, but I don't get an event notification when I press Fn+F10. I have no idea where to go from here. There does not seem to be a step-by-step gide anywhere for idiots like me!
    Many thanks in advance.

Thanks for your help, Inxsible. For consistency,  I was hoping to do this from within the acpi-eeepc-generic.conf framework, but maybe that's not an option. In any case, this solution is very elegant, so I'll give it a go.

  • What bandwidth is reasonable on 802.11g?

In this post I was originally going to complain that I couldn't connect to my E4200 using the 'Wireless-N only' option, but upon closer inspection it turns out my wireless adapter (an Atheros AR5001) only supports a/b/g, even though the specs for my computer (an ASUS eeePC 901) claim otherwise.
Anyway, right now I get about 25 Mb/s on the wireless, which is still quite a bit lower than the theoretical 56 Mb/s. I am no more than 2-3 m away from the router, and I have line-of-sight at all times. I use WPA2 personal security and the 'Channel' and 'Channel width' options are both set to 'Auto'.
Would it be possible to achieve at least something like 40-50 Mb/s by tuning my settings, and if so, which settings should be changed to what?
    Thanks in advance.
Edit: Oh yeah, and I have the latest firmware. (1.0.02)
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Well, 25 Mb/s is about 45% of theoretical, which is slightly dissatisfying. I'll see if any of the static channels give better performance. Is there any other setting I can change that might make a difference? (If I understand correctly, 802.11g only supports channel width 20 MHz, and I can't choose 40 MHz in the web interface anyway)

  • [SOLVED] startx and xinit fail on eeepc901 (possibly after upgrade)

    Dear all,
    Can't get X to start.
After a system upgrade (was a messy one, I'm pretty sure this is not a bug) I must have deleted some very important file for X. The fact is that it has stopped working, startx fails, xinit fail, even Xorg -configure fails. Please also note that I've changed the kernel (from zeneee to stock) but I had the same behavior with the previous kernel.
    Possibly interesting outputs:
    $xinit
    giving up.
xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.
    $startx
xauth: creating new authority file /home/mgp/.serverauth.4397
    giving up.
xinit: No such file or directory (errno 2): unable to connect to X server
xinit: No such process (errno 3): Server error.
It does create the authority file. Fails after that.
    #Xorg -configure
    Segmentation fault
My xorg.conf file is as follows (although I have tried without one and have the same errors, so probably not related):

I've searched over for a solution but can't really find anything relevant. I've tried installing xorg a few times. Also hal and all that stuff but I don't trust myself too much on that. I don't know how to proceed any further and would appreciate any help possible or any ideas you think I could try. I'm pretty sure it's something quite stupid. Thanks for your time and consideration.
    Best regards,
    Michael

    Hi all,
I fixed it. By looking closely at the strace I figured that for some reason X couldn't access my /tmp. I remember setting my /tmp directories in fstab to mount on tmpfs so I figured that wasn't working anymore. I removed my tmp entries in fstab (will have to refigure that one out). Something changed with the devices. Maybe I wasn't using udev before or something as it also has problems mounting devices it previously mounted on boot. However all this happened before I changed kernel. Dunno, anyway, it works although I have to fix a bunch of small things that still don't work. Lesson would be update often (hadn't done so in a year) and keep in touch with what is going on in the community (eee instructions have changed a lot -and become slightly more confusing-). Anyway, thanks for your help, specially Rasi.
    Best regards,
    Michael

  • Gnome 3 in VM

I've installed Arch with Gnome 3 in both VMware player and Virtualbox and I can't get the hot corner(or the notifications bar) to work in either of them.    I can get it to work in Virtualbox if I disable mouse integration but the mouse pointer disappears.  I've also tried installing Fedora to see if it works there, and no luck.  Any ideas would be appreciated, thanks.

I have an Asus EeePC 901 netbook with the same graphics chip, and gnome-shell runs very well without going to fallback mode. I think maybe it isn't installed properly, I recommend you do
    pacman -S gnome
    and reinstall everything ...
could you please tell me which gfx driver you use? i have x86-video-intel-2.15.0-1 installed.
ah ok. for some reason i did not use the upgrade from 2.x guide but the install new gnome3 guide.
after installing gnome-shell i have now gnome3. sorry for trouble.
on the other pc i had gnome-shell already. but /etc/mkinitcpio.conf had only the i915 now with i915 intel_agp drm it works after mkinitcpio -p kernel26.
no idea if it was intel_agp or drm. 2 pcs 2 separate mistakes. i should change my job

  • I need *.eap or *.deb file for firefox update

I am using an asus netbook with linux. For whatever reason the installed firefox is set to update automatically, which it unfortunately for me does not do When I download the latest version of firefow the netbook only accepts *.eap or *.deb files. I was wondering if the frefox update files even come as one of these files!? Can zou help me figure out how to getthe latest firefox version?
    Thanks!
    Sincerely, Petra E. Krips

Is it an eeePC? I have an Asus eeePC 901 linux with an old version of Firefox.
It is possible, but complicated, to update to the current version of Firefox.
I suggest you search on the eeePC forum - it's a subject that has come up several times.

You might also consider installing a more up-to-date version of Linux like UNR - again details on that forum.

  • [SOLVED] Latest Upgrade Broke nm-applet/blueman-applet

I have just upgraded my system (eeepc 901/kdemod3). Nm-applet and blueman-applet no longer appear in my toolbar (but network manager and bluetooth still work).
When I run  them from a terminal, I get these error messages:
** (nm-applet:3436): WARNING **: Fallback icon 'gtk-dialog-error' missing: (0) Icon 'gtk-dialog-error' not present in theme
    ERROR:applet.c:2763:nma_icons_reload: assertion failed: (applet->fallback_icon)
    Aborted
    and
    Failed to load PowerManager
Icon 'gtk-missing-image' not present in theme
Obviously, some icons have been lost, or new ones are missing, but I have no idea where or how.
I would be very grateful for advice

  • Problem openbox + driver synaptics

    hi to all
i've installed on arch openbox. all it's OK except for one boring thing:
i have a synaptics touchpad so i've installed their driver and i've configurated it through HAL .fdi file ( because i haven't xorg.conf )
then the double-click has became three-click,
examples: in thunar to open a folder i double-click on it, NOW to open a folder i must click three times !!!! it's very very boring
HOW i can fix it ???
PS: with gnome as DE i haven't any problems, only with openbox ....
    PS 2: all software is up-to-date, it's a fresh Arch install ...
    thanks to all

  • Gnome-keyring-daemon will not save my passphrase

I use Slim to log in to my Openbox session on my dear EeePC 901. What I cannot seem to do is set up my environment so that gnome-keyring-daemon not only pops up and asks for my ssh passphrases but also save them for future use. Ideally I would like gnome-keyring to unlock the keyring automatically on login. I have the pop up and ask for passphrase part figured out, but now I'm basically lost when trying to get it to remember my passphrase.
Set up: slim-plus, logging in using my .xinitrc (below):
    ~/.xinitrc:
    source /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/30-dbus
    # gnome-keyring stuff, which almost works
    eval $(gnome-keyring-daemon)
    export GNOME_KEYRING_PID
    export GNOME_KEYRING_SOCKET
    export SSH_AUTH_SOCK
    # desktop
    eval $(cat ~/.fehbg) &
    wicd-client &
    syndaemon -i 0.7 -t -k &
    tint2 &
    # finally, launch openbox
    exec ck-launch-session openbox
    /etc/pam.d/slim (if it even matters?):

    auth required pam_env.so
    auth required pam_unix.so
    account required pam_unix.so
    session required pam_limits.so

    session required pam_env.so readenv=1 envfile=/etc/profile.d/locale.sh
    session optional pam_gnome_keyring.so auto_start

Any hints on this? I had it running quite some time ago on another computer (no, not using GDM then either) and I didn't have this much trouble setting it all up.
