Wireless on G4 867

Airport Standard cards are quite pricey, so I was looking into PCI cards for my G4 867.
Problem is, there is no reliable support. Bought a Netgear WG311, and tried using the Orangeware software - Software seems to work, but my machine does not recognize a card in the PCI slot.
Since Netgear does not support Mac, it's hard to know what cards will actually work. I'm sending the Netgear card back.
Any recommendations for PCI cards that work?

I recently put a Belkin F5D7000, version 4000, PCI card into my G4 450, booted up and I now have an Airport Extreme
connection (802.11g), all for $35, CompUSA. Oh so easy!
"The Version 4000 CardBus cards, and the Version 2000 PCI cards are Airport Extreme compatible. Belkin has other versions of these very same products which are not necessarily Airport compatible.
With Belkin, the version is indicated both on the card itself, and on the outside of the retail box. "
Comments from a thread I posted elsewhere.
The version 4000 PCI that I have, also has a 54g logo on the box, white writing in a red circle, and on the bottom of the box it says "The 54g logo is a trademark of Broadcom Corporation......etc". This was how I confirmed my research that the F5D7000 PCI, version 4000 (Shown on the bottom of the box) contained the Broadcom chip that I wanted.

  • G4 867 Quicksilver + Airport Card - Not seein' any wireless signals

    Hi hello there,
I got this G4 running 10.5 for surfin and music - but I can't seem to get the Airport workin on it.
I have a laptop that is currently using the Airport Express... So I know how to set it up. And I know it's sending out the signals
I installed an Airport card - It's in my "About this mac" so I know it's recognized.
I rebooted (held if for long until it beeped {thanks IT guy}) I zapped the p-ram - It's ON. I got a lil Amber icon next to it in the Network controls. And It's in my Shortcut Airport menu - but I don't see nobody - no networks.
    What am I doing wrong?

    Hi,
we had a poster here who had the same problem with a card still under warranty. Apple service checked it and it was dead, he got a free exchange.

Download & try MacStumbler @ http://www.macstumbler.com/ to see if it can detect any signal.

  • Mac won't sleep after adding Kensington Wireless Mouse

I've added a Kensington PilotMouse Laser Wireless to my system and now it won't sleep, without first switching off the mouse. Kensington has no info on this, is there a workaround?
    PowerMac G4 (Dual 867) Mac OS X (10.4.4)

The "sleep" that you describe is not sleep. Your mac has crashed but since it thinks it is sleeping there is nothing in the crash logs.
Sleep on modern computers is not just a hardware shutdown. Because X and XP are server based kernels they are designed to run 24/7 and do what they can to keep it that way. Deep sleep requires an orderly shut down of processes and loading their status into memory so that when it wakes, all is as it was.
There are many things that can prevent sleep. Usb devices are designed to wake a mac on a change of state (doing something). When my mac did what yours did the only fix for it was an erase and install. I tried all the other solutions but the only one that worked was an erase and install.
If you care to try some of the "fixes" then here are some.
    Reset the pmu.

  • Anyone used Airport Express as bridge w. wireless router other than Apples?

I have my QS 867 hardwired to my highspeed modem and a Netgear 624GT wireless router attached. My PB has been having trouble with the signal in certain spots due to all the jazz about the alum interfering w. the antenna. When I try to setup the Airport Express with my Netgear network and use the Airport as a bridge/range extender, it does not recogize the Netgear router. It seems to specify in the instructions that you MUST use an Airport Extreme Base Station. Is this true? Has anyone used the Express as a bridge with a wireless router other than the Base Station?

At one point in time I did have an Airport Express working in WDS over WEP with the Belkin F5D7230-4 and F5D7130. It's unsupported and difficult to get setup. It tends to causes them to lock up and need to be rebooted.
We ended up just dropping the Belkins and getting more Airport Expresses as the Belkins couldn't support doing WDS over WPA (which we've since moved too).

  • 10.4.9 and Logitech Laser Wireless Mouse MX1000

on my work computer G5 Tower, 10.4.9 and my Logitech don't get along real well. Works good until I hit a series of keys or it just randomly freaks out and I get this weird movement on my screen where the mouse controls the screen. The dock (hiding off) and my finder menu bar are part of the movement where they disapear out of the screen.
I can work with it now but when this happens the only thing I have figured out is that I have to restart. So be careful if you have a Logitech wireless mouse. Logitech of course only has software up to 10.4.8.

I was having the same problem with mine until it just stopped working. Any time I moved the mouse, my Mac would make the error alert sound. I restarted the Mac, and then it wouldn't recognize my Logitech MX 1000 at all.
I finally found my wired USB mouse, and I uninstalled the driver from Logitech's site. They published an update as of January 2007. The installer hung during the first try as it was trying to locate a drive to install the software, but I quit the installer. After a second restart, the installer seemed to work fine.
After a restart, I still can't get the MX 1000 to respond. The mouse is just dead. Anyone else have any ideas?

  • Driver for 3Com OfficeConnect Wireless Card?

    Hi there.
Anyone know of way of getting this card to work with a Ti Pbook running 10.4.6? I have a 3com OfficeConnect Wireless Card 54Mbps PC Card (3CRGPC10075) - it came free with my 3com Wireless router, but so far I can't find a driver that will get it working.
I have tried these drivers without success:
    http://www.orangeware.com/endusers/wirelessformac.html
    http://www.ioxperts.com/products/80211b_X.html
Any tips anyone? Should I give up and go buy one that will definitely work on Mac or persevere?
    Thanks.
    Ti Pbook 867   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

Hi, Pieshop. The 3Com cards that are known to work with Macs — see here — use the drivers you've already tried, so it seems like a fair bet that your card isn't going to work out. Too bad, but unless your router was grossly overpriced to cover the extra cost of the card, it probably isn't worth wasting much time trying to get it to work.

  • PCI wireless card connected to network but safari says not connected to net

    Hi everyone
I moved my computer and had to change from wired ethernet to wifi. I installed a ralink PCI card in my MDD G4 dual 867. It sees the network and connects but Safari doesn't know it is on a network. What am I missing? I also have to connect manually every bootup. How do I setup autostart? My wireless router is a D-link DIR-615. Thanks in advance for your help.
    Dave

    Hi David,
The Interface that connects to the Internet, needs to be drug to the top of Network>Show:>Network Port Configurations and checked ON.
Then... Try putting these numbers in Network>TCP/IP>DNS Servers, for the Interface you connect with...
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
    Then Apply
DNS Servers are a bit like Phone books where you look up a name and it gives you the phone number, in our case, you put in apple.com and it comes back with 17.149.160.49 behind the scenes.
These Servers have been patched to guard against DNS poisoning, and are faster/more reliable than most ISP's DNS Servers.

  • Airport upgrade has zapped my wireless

Mr iBook G3 running Leopard using the old Apple Airport Card communicated perfectly with my wireless/ethernet modem. Until the weekend automatic software check advised that new software was available and suggested upgrading to Airport 4.2. I checked that this was correct and compatible with my iBook and went ahead with the download. Since then I cannot get Airport to connect. I get a message that Airport is on but not connected. At startup, I get a message: "None of your trusted wireless networks can be found. Would you like to join the open wireless network named WLAN2?" This tries, but fails. Attempting to connect via the normal WPA Personal network using the password protecting security also fails with the message "There was an error joining the AirPort network WLAN." I have spent an hour with my ISP who can find no fault with my settings. What is the solution? Or how can I get back to the version before 4.2?

    Hi,

Running Leopard on a G3? The minimum requirements for Leopard are A Mac computer with an Intel, PowerPC G5, or Power PC G4 (867 MHz or faster)
Over here you are running Panther?

  • No wireless Internet after  the lastest security update

Everything was working fine, but since i did the latest security update,...i noticed my wireless internet connection was getting weaker and weaker and now i can't connect anymore.
I'm using a Belkin PCcard in my Powerbook G4 Titanium 867 GHZ
Connected to a Belkin Wireless router. My Belkin Card is recognized as airport express in the system profiler.
We also have a Ibook G4 800GHZ with an orginal airport extreme card , same problems too, no connection to our Belkin router.
As i wrote earlier everything was working fine.....
internet works fine with the standard UTP rj45 cable..
What i did , Repaired all the permission, restarted the router, removed the airportkext2 file as suggested on some postings etc etc (later put it back ofcourse)... but no solution...
Must be something with the latest, update I hope Apple solves this issue soon, any help from you Macwizards really appreciated.

  • Problems setting up Airport Extreme w/o wireless card

I just got an airport base station to host a dialup connection for an OSX 10.4.2 G4 Quicksilver 867 and a PC running win2k. No wireless cards on any of the machines.
I cant get it setup. using the Setup assistant, it see's the station and gives it a number. Then I get a messege saying "There was an error connecting to the air port base station you selected." regardless if I choose new setup or edit setup. If I click OK, at the bottom of the main screen it says "Reading Configuration". I let it run like that for an hour. I tried the admin tool as well, "cant read configuration" error there.
I think I likely need a wireless card to even access it.
But when I access the airport setup assistant, it says something about I'd "only be able to configure the LAN only. but it ddint help. rebooted computer and airport. i have it connected via ethernet.

Thanks Duane! I was in static IP mode and had to switch to dhcp and then yeah, i used the admin utility. thanks for everything. dialup to earthlink worked and I set my router and all systems to DHCP.
is there a difference between the 10.x.x.x IP range and the normal 192.168.1.x Ip pool? I always used the later in the past but noticed a choice in the airport admin tool.

  • Wireless Card Help

I have a Powerbook G4 Ti. 867 Ghz that doesnt have a wireless card. I was wondering what kind of wireless card that I need to have wireless capabilities. I was also confused about what drivers I need for each different card.
    Thanks

here is the specs page for you computer.
    http://support.apple.com/specs/powerbook/PowerBookG41GHz-867MHz.html
it came with an optional Airport Card. there are 2 different airport cards.
the regular " Airport" and "Airport Extreme" . you will be needeing the regular one. You will not be able to find one of these on the Apple Store Online. your best bet is to find a 3rd party reseller that still has some.

  • Videoconference H.323 over Wireless

    Hi everyone
We are looking at the possible creation of a "video only" network for the transport of our clients H.323 videoconferencing traffic throughout our community. Does anyone have any experience transporting H.323 video over wireless networks? Any success?
Specifically we would like to create a central hub site located in the city which all the edge videoconferencing units connect to. We would put an Aironet 1200 centrally located and 1200's at each client site. The radius around the hub is about 5km. All buildings are line of sight. One client is at the 5km mark and will be the main jump point to the surrounding communities where they already have all the IP based videoconferencing systems sitting on their WAN.
I am not sure if the 1200 with the 5Ghz modules are capable of this distance at a reasonable speed? And have not been able to find someone that had tried H.323 video over a half duplex link? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Ken

We have obtained exceptional video and audio performance with a H.323 Video Conference solution using two Polycom Veiwstations at 768Kbps over an 802.11b (11Mbps) network using 350's, however the key to this type of installation is very high signal to noise and narrow beam point to point links (in areas with lots of public traffic).
The project was for a video conference link between a remand facility and a local courthouse. They found that the costs of transporting prisoners between the remand center and courthouse and the waiting times were far more costly than the implementation of a videoconference facility to do simple remand hearings.
The Courthouse and Remand Center are aproximately 8km distance but have no direct line of sight, so we encorporated a central repeater site. Initially this central site was equiped with an Omni 180deg 15dBi antenna and a 350 series bridge, the two remote sites were equiped with 13dBi 30deg yagi antennas directed towards the central site. We had signal levels of between 13-18 dB signal to noise but found that the performance was not adequate to carry video traffic at sustained speeds. Since the wireless network is half duplex the addition of the repeater site makes the end to end network act like a 'quarter duplex' as it were. (two seperate legs each having to wait for the other to finish before communicating).
Before we were sucessful we tried a number of senarios, including the placement of a video bridge at the central location which enhance the store and forward capability of the video and audio data above that of the 350's data buffers at the cost of a bit of latency. In the end we needed to add a second bridge, to separate the two legs with non-overlapping channels, in the central site and replacing the Omni with two Yagi on the two seperate bridges (the bridges linked via 10Mbps switch) just to get the system up and running by the deadline. A lot of our greif we later determind was due to other wireless networks in the vacinity (keep an eye on carrier tests at all locations durring the installation, and use narrower beam antenna's where aplicable) this coupled with the 'quarter duplex' senario greatly hampered the situation.
In hind site we would definately use as narrow a beam width high gain antenna as possible, like a parabolic dish to point at the central site, eliminating much of the sorounding noise. and try and keep the S/N as high as possible as well.
-We suggest using a well grounded nema enclosure mounted as close to the antenna as possible to eliminate loss on coaxial cabling.
-Pay the extra money for higher quality coax, coax can add as much as 20dB/100ft. attenuation depending on the quality of cable.
-the use of signal splitter/combiners with multiple narrow beam high gain antenna's and amplifiers to increase your power output and receive gain (taking note of maximum ERP allowances in your area of course ;) instead of an omni or sector antenna. This will reduce interference from other radio networks in the vacinity.
These precautions hold true for any installation but considerably so for Full Duplex Constant Bit Rate applications being used over a half duplex system like Video Conferencing which requires low and stable latency.
Feel free to contact me with particular questions in regards to your project.

  • Macbook wireless connection

My macbook has recently started having problems with connecting to every wireless network I normally use. When I move more than approximately 10 feet away from any wireless router my signal strength plummets. When I ping as I move away I lose most, if not all, of the packets, and some of the packets have taken as long as 1 second to return. I think that I have tried every single suggestion I have found on any help site. I have been using 10.4.11 since it became available, but I don't specifically recall having problems since this change. I just did an archive and install from my install disc back to 10.4.6 and updated to 10.4.9 because that seems to be the OS that nobody reports having problems with. Even with this, the problem persists. Might my airport card be damaged or loose? Any suggestions will be appreciated. I'm desperate to the point of performing surgery.

    Hi all,
I'm having issues with WiFi too... When I'm at home and WiFi is not strong enough (too far away, too much walls...) connections seems to be full 4 bars, dropping to 2, to 1 back and forth...
Sometimes turning it on, it's not finding the WLan for autoconnect, or suggests me to type in the password again... Very strange: Sometimes it says that none of my preferred networks are available and suggests to connect to others. In the list I can find my own network again!!! Choosing it mostly leads to connection timeout...
I have similar problems at other locations, but I'm not sure if I'm in the WiFi range all the time (although I think so)...
I did also think, sth. with my router (WRT54GL with Tomato firmware) is not OK or it's not positioned very well in my flat... Experimenting with it, I found kinda sweet spot and connection was ok, but all of a sudden, there was this weird thing:
Testing with the ping response time and packet loss, I confirmed, that response time is <3ms average and no packet loss... But afterwards the ping response time fluctuates back and forth:

I thought, this was the routers fault, but after restarting the MacBook, it's all fine again!
Please note that these weird ping times came up when I was in the same room or even a few feet away from the router! Also The Wifi Symbol frequently reduced signal strenght by 1 to only 3...
I really don't know what causes this. Especially because this is not makeing problems all the time... I.E. connections is quite good sometimes and even in a big room with only one small access point hanging around for several douzen people, connection might be good and fast...
    Best Regards,
