Wireless options anyone?

Hey guys, I've moved my desk to another room that has no internet or network access. What are my options for the Mac Mini now besides the Airport/Bluetooth upgrade kit?
Currently, I have a PC running WindowsXP Pro that has a wireless Dlink G adapter (usb) which I use to get internet access. I miss the Mini, which currently is setup to my living room TV, an old 32" Sony analog TV using S-video. It's where my cable modem is setup with the Dlink wireless router. The resolution and computing experience isn't that great as you can imagine.
I called Dlink about this adapter and complained because in the instruction manual, it shows the OSX screenshots, but no drivers on the included disk. They told me it would never be available. So, I'm stuck. Any suggestions for wireless alternatives? Thanks in advance.

There have been various reports of compatible USB wifi devices that would allow the mini to operate in a wireless network without resorting to Airport. Have you tried the 'internet-networking' forum to see if any user there can give you a personal recommendation? It seems generally regarded that USB wifi devices are rather less reliable, but I recall posts from some who have got such devices to work.
As for wiring the mini to a wireless router, the answer is that it should work with almost any router that will allow an ethernet connection - generally all that's needed is to plug it in and boot it up. Depending on the settings in the router, you may need to make configuration changes in the network preference pane, but often it is, quite literally, plug and play.

  • Confused on Wireless Options when adding second Air Port Extreme to network

Hello and thank you for your anticipated help. I decided to increase my coverage in my home by adding a second Air Port Extreme to the network. I followed the setup as outlined and it is connected to the network (green solid LEDs) but when I looked at the second Air Port Extreme I noticed under wireless options that there are different options listed. The primary APE show this:
    The extended APE shows this:
    Are these setting correct?
    Thanks!

    Thanks for the reply.
I understand the fact that a "hidden" network really isn't so hidden. I have a rather secure SSID (17+ characters) that should slow down anyone trying to access it from outside, especially since most programs designed to defeat PW tend to limit themselves to 16 characters. We're not a nuclear site, but I just feel better knowing that I have at least checked the box that made it hidden.
Everything is working well and I just didn't understand the whole second APE setup thing with the channels and frequencies.
Thank you for you help and input.
BTW, I installed the 7.6.3 update and pulled it back to 7.6.1 after up/dn speeds declined considerably.

  • HP LaserJet Pro 200 color MFP M276nw Wireless option is gone!!!

I have a HP LaserJet Pro 200 color MFP M276nw.  The blue lit wireless icon used to stay on steady and all was fine for quite a while, then the Blue icon would start flashing like it lost it connection to the wireless router.  I would just recycle the power on the printer and let it reboot.  Usually it would connect with the router again but, it's been getting worse lately.  I figured I would try to the latest firmware to the printer as maybe there was a clitch with the original firmware.........Well, now I get no blue wireless icon and the wireless menu disappeared from the touch screen.  I tried to access the wireless settings in the web browser, the program said "this product does not support wireless connectivity.......WHAT?!!!!!  I tried a "cold reset" on the printer to clear everything and still have no wireless option.  I suppose its going to stick with the same firmware that was last installed.  I did notice that the printer lists itself with an "N" at the end of the model # on any printed report instead of the "NW" its supposed to be.  I did download the printer firmware from the Pro 200 color MFP M276nw support page.  it's acting like it now has the firmware for the non-wireless version of this printer.   This is the firmware I used
    file name:
    M276_colorMFP_Series_FW_Update-20140521.exe [1/1, 14.32M]
.  Any Ideas how to fix this?  Seems like this is the wrong firmware for this printer.  Everything else appears to work ok.
    Bob

****UPDATE****  After running a few copies through the printer the wireless feature showed up again.  The printed reports started to show this printer with the "NW" at the end of the model number instead of just the "N".   After a few minutes it all went away again.  Seeing the correct model number show up for a few minutes made me believe the correct printer firmware is installed.  To make this a short story, I ordered the wireless PCA assy (Small internal wireless circuit board, HP part #1150-7940) and replaced it.  It's been working great for the past few days( since the board was replaced).   Apparently,  if the system does not see a working wireless board it defaults to the non-wireless model number and the wireless option disappears from the menu screen.  The other thing is there apparently is no fault code that covers this type of failure.....frustrating, to say the least.  I will update if this is not the fix but, it looks like I got it!
    Thanks!!!!!!!

  • Can't change wireless options

I want to change some wireless options. I go to 192.168.1.1, sign-in, click wireless. I get a screen that says:
"Searching for your client device. Please wait... If you haven't clicked on the Wi-Fi Protected Setup button on your client device, please do so now. "
The screen did a scan, got to 99% and Hangs IE. Under the screen my wireless options are displayed. The only way out is to close IE by Xing or closing. I can't get to my wireless options to change them.
    Any suggestions?

can you please provide provide the model number of router which you are using. You can try logging into router after reseting it and can configure it once again.

    Hi all,
So ive recently moved to the uk and am having a horrible time getting on the internet with my TC, England isnt shown in the wireless options location pull down menu, which has me baffled. could this be why it doesnt think the ethernet is plugged in when it is?

    Try repairing disk permissions.
Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select FirstAid, then click: Repair Disk Permissions. Quit DU when it's finished and reboot.

  • Problem disabling wireless option on a BEFW11S4

Hi. Recently, my roommate making use of the wireless capability on our linksys decided to hardwire his connection like my other roommate and I. The topic describes the dilemma we're having now, and we believe it is what is contributing to an incredibly slow internet speed at the moment since we have many other wireless users in our area.
My roommate attempted to disable it on his computer by going into the setup as described by the manual. He used the default IP, went to set up and selected the option to disable wireless. Then he tested the wireless connection out to see if it was disabled, and he still saw our network available. I then tried accessing setup on my computer and it still reads as being "disabled," but it isn't.
I'm not sure if we just need to reset our router in a certain manner, if there's an issue with having to fill in our domain name, or whatever it is that is not making the alterations to our router stick. As you can tell, I'm not too router savvy, so any insight you can pass on to me would be most appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

hi there, it might be that the wireless you're connecting is not from your wireless router.. it might be that the connection was from your neighbor.. the reason why i said this is because I just thought that your SSID might be the default "linksys"... of course, there are some, if not most, that will just leave their SSID as just "linksys"
to verify that the wireless being disabled is working, you will need to change the SSID of your router to see if you are still seeing your SSID... if not, then basically the disablity of wireless option is working

If your problem persists get yourself a micro USB cable (sold separately), you can restore your Apple TV from iTunes:
        1.    Remove ALL cables from Apple TV. (if you don't you will not see Apple TV in the iTunes Source list)
        2.    Connect the micro USB cable to the Apple TV and to your computer.
        3.    Reconnect the power cable (only for Apple TV 3)
        4.    Open iTunes.
        5.    Select your Apple TV in the Devices list, and then click Restore.
(You may already have a micro USB cable if you have a camera or other digital device)

I suspect it has to do with the type of email service... POP or IMAP.  Or maybe with the features of the email service (I somehow doubt that, though).
Good thought, but that's not the issue. I have 6 email accounts, including 3 POP3, an IMAP, an iCloud, and Exchange. If I tap Mark on a message of any of them I have an option to Flag or Mark as Unread. Although I don't know what good Mark would do on a POP3, because it would not sync back to the server or other clients on my computers. It DOES for IMAP, iCloud and Exchange.
It might be that Hotmail specifically doesn't support it.

  • Airport Extreme - best wireless option for connecting a Windows XP PC?

First post on this board - forgive the long-windedness.
Relatively new to MAC, not to UNIX / IT in general and, sadly, Windows.
As well as the MAC mini, my wife has a black MACBook, running Tiger and Parallels. We have acquired an Airport Extreme to replace the old 802.11b WAP. This works well with the MACBook, but I have had a few problems finding a suitable wireless client / adapter for the younger son's Windows XP PC, an HP Pavilion with USB2.0 ports. I started with a Linksys WUSB54G, with the latest drivers downloaded from Linksys. This worked well for a couple of weeks, using Windows Zero Config, after which it dropped out and refused to reconnect to any network, even the unsecure old 802.11b WAP.
The replacement began well, but then required reinstall of the drivers after every reboot of the PC, which allowed it to work. Eventually, this remedy failed; although other networks remained visible, the Airport one did not.
I will be taking the second one back! But I need an alternative.
Is there an issue with Linksys / Airport connections in general?
A colleague has suggested that an internal PCI card might be a better option than an USB based adapter, but he has no MAC experience.
Can anyone recommend a suitable card or an alternative USB solution?

Yes generally they are better choice, another option would be an ethernet wireless bridge such as the WET54G which would require NO installation of software or drivers on the PC - it can be configured via a web browser.

  • Wireless Options - US purchase, working in UK AND..... Modem?

I purchased my TC(4th Generation, new shape) 2TB in the USA while on a brief trip.
It's set up at home in the UK and works fine. But:
1 - The wirless Options list 5GHz countries that are US/Canada/central America etc.  Could anyone please advise if I should set the 5GHz option to any of these in particular?? and why please?
2 - I have read the threads about the Guest Network Option and understand the necessity for a "simple modem". Can anyone recommend a suitable modem for UK use, or indeed has anyone managed to get this option to work using a BT Hub (3 in my case - no fibre optics in the coutrside!!)
    Any help would be appreciated.

Just use the US option.. because it makes no difference ..
See the wlan about what works in what country.
    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_WLAN_channels
    2. THere is no suitable modem because you use pppoa in the modem.. that means the modem must be the router and the TC must be bridged.. there is no choice.. Use the BT modem router as guest network and use the TC as main wireless network. There is absolutely no use running the guest network anyway .. it is simply using the time and bandwidth on the TC. So use your BT hub for guest wireless.

  • Seeking Other Wireless Options

Well, while my AirPort Extreme card has vanished without a trace.... gone... on unscheduled holiday. I am attempting to discover other options of Wireless Connection. I have been told that there is an external connection device that looks much like a flash drive-- that connects to a USB port that gives access to wireless connections from anywhere. I think Best Buy sells them for Microsoft users. Has anyone seen something like this for Mac users? Afterall, how cool would this be !
