Wireless printer network w/o wireless internet?

I got a new printer and have it wired to my iMac and want to wirelessly connect it to the Mac Pro. The printer is capable of wireless, but it asks for an SSID. Can I set this up with only my two computers without involving wireless internet? (Does my computer have an SSID, or is that exclusive to wireless ISP networks?)
Thanks for any info!
-Doug

Hi
SSID (Service Set Identifier) is the name of your network/WLAN. You don't need to have an internet connection, you just need to have a wireless network.
You can create an ad-hoc network using your Mac, but I don't know how your printer would go connecting to that, seeing as its mainly used as a computer-to-computer network.
You may be best to keep it connected via USB to one Mac, and use Printer Sharing (System Preferences -> Sharing) to share the printer over the network, but again, you will need a wireless (or wired for that matter) network connection for this to work.

  • Wireless printer network

My cell phone and tablet sometimes lock onto the wireless printer network instead of the Internet wireless network in my home. This occurs randomly and it has nothing to do with printing. I have to manually chose the correct network. Any suggestions to configure the printer so the phone doesn't pick that nerwork automatically? The phone is a LG G3 from Verizon.

You need to disable Wireless Direct in the printer.

  • Airport Utility cannot find my Airport.  It is nearby, no interference, and worked for about 9 months.  The Airport still provides wireless internet for the household, though it won't recognize the printer -- plugged in or wireless.

How can I get Airport Utility to find my Airport?  It is nearby, no interference, and worked for about 9 months.  The Airport still provides wireless internet for the household, though it won't recognize the printer -- plugged in or wireless.

Are you using the latest version (5.5.2) of the AirPort Utility to access the new 802.11n AirPort Extreme Base Station (AEBSn)? Your tagline has it that you are running OS X 10.4.6. You would need at least 10.5.7 to run the utility. I assume that you are running the latest utility on another device ... correct?
When having difficulties accessing the AirPort thru the AirPort Utility, try the following, in order checking accessibility with the utility after each step:
o Check the local connection. If you are trying to access the AirPort wirelessly, make sure that you are connected to its wireless network before running the AirPort Utility to administer it. If you are still unable to access it with the utility, temporarily connect your computer directly using an Ethernet cable to one of the base station's LAN ports.
o Power cycle the base station. Remove the power adapter's plug from the power outlet, and then, wait 15 seconds before plugging it back in.
o Perform a "factory default" reset on the base station.

    Hey DM,
Is the Wireless(WL) router signal coming through the wired-router?
My ISP requires that my Wireless Router is identified from their end. I use AirPort Express, so they need its MAC address from the router. Without that, my network will show up, but my ISP doesn't recognize it and won't allow it to route he internet. I don't know your exact situation though.
Can other wireless computers access the internet? If they can through the WL router, then it might be the MacBook. If they can't, then you might want to contact your ISP and ask if they can see your wireless router?

  • Connected to Wireless Network, Not Connected to Internet...

    Hi All
I recently had my NVIDIA graphics card replaced as it freaked right out the other day.
I took my MacBook Pro home yesterday and everything was perfect. It connected to my wireless network @ home as normal, and was functional all night.
I have come to work today, and it automatically joined up with the network here. Only problem is, that whilst it connects to the network here, and obtains an IP address as well, as soon as I try to connect to the internet, it says that I am not connected to the internet!!!
    Now the finer details:
    * I have reset EVERYTHING. Routers, Modems, Computers etc
    * All firmware is still the same as it was pre-nvidia fix up.
    * Distance is not a problem, I am sitting next to the wireless router.
    * An ethernet cable from the router to my computer ALLOWS access to the internet
    * My Iphone can connect wirelessly to the same network and browse the internet.
    * A windows PC can connect wirelessly to the same network and browse the net.
    * I can see that it is connected to the router AND given an IP address.
    Please help!!!

I had the same problem. I sent my MBP to get a Logic Board/Nvidia fix and when it came back I could no longer connect to networks using DHCP. I have to manually put in my IP, Subnet, etc. for every network I join.
Randomly about a week in I had some pop-up window show up asking me to allow incoming network connections for something and when i clicked on it I was able to us DHCP again. Just tonight it stopped working and I am once again in the position where i have to manually input IP info, etc.
    Super Frustrating

  • I am having trouble connecting to my wireless internet. I keep getting message that my network configuration settings have changed. Ive been advised that i need to change settings to look for dynamic ip address ?

I am having trouble connecting to my wireless internet and am getting the message that my network configuration settings have changed. I have reported it to my provider who advised that they think the Mac is looking for a fixed IP address and they use dynamic addresses. I have had the Mac for months and have not had this problem before. I would appreciate any help please on how to fix this ?

Then I get a separate pop up that says: Secure Connection Failed. aus3.mozilla:443 uses an invalid security certificate.
The certificate is only valid for the following names: securelogin.arubanetworks.com, www.securelogin.arubanetworks.com
    (Error code: ssl_error_cert_domain)
This could be a problem with the server's configuration or it could be someone trying to impersonate the server.
If you have connected to this server successfully in the past the error may be temporary and you can try again later.
I have tried many many times!

  • I can connect to my wireless network but not the internet

Hi. I've had my iBook G4 for just about a year and it's worked fantastically... until recently. My roommate has a PC and a linksys wireless router, and I've always been able to connect wirelessly to the internet until last week. I came home from work one day, and my iBook "saw" our wireless network and could "see" other computers on the network, but could not access the internet. My roommate had no problem accessing the internet through the wi-fi on his Dell laptop. So I zapped my p-ram and fiddled with some settings, but I still had the same problem.
Next I re-installed OS X, and tried again. Still the same issue. Of course, by this time I'm getting frustrated, but then about 12 hours later I decide to try it again and it just works! Like there was never any problem....
So anyway, it worked like a dream for about a week and now I have the same exact problem again! It connects to the network but not the internet. Is this a known problem? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
    Thanks,
    -joe.

i was having the same issue with all my devices. everything would cut out and i would have to reboot my router...my internet service provider is ATT and i have a Uverse router. i went to their online support and i was able to chat with a tech support agent and they ended up changing the channel of my router and that has resolved my problem....i am currently steaming pics from my iphoto library to my apple tv and my wife is streaming music from her iphone at the same time...support tech stated that usually they have the router set to a generic channel that usually has a lot of traffic.

  • Blinking amber, "no wireless networks found", rescanning, but internet work

OK - so, everything was fine at home with my airport extreme, hardwired to the modem and my Mac Pro. Wireless worked fine on laptop & iPhone. Today I bought an Airport Express so I can stream music to my stereo. Ran Airport Utility and POOF - blinking amber lights everywhere, utility asking me to rescan over and over because it says I now no longer have any wireless networks - even though the internet works fine. Blinking yellow on base station, blinking yellow on express, yet utility just tells me to rescan, and everything else is grayed out. Banging my head against a wall. Anyone have an idea?

You configure the Express via AirPort Utility. If you cannot see the Express when you open the AU app, click on the AirPort icon (of your Mac) on the upper menu. See if the Express network shows up there. If so, log into that network and open AU again to configure it. If that does not work, get an ethernet cable and connect the Express to your computer. If the Express still does not show up on AU, do a hard reset and try again. Once in AU, you can configure it to try and join or extend your network.

I have tried resetting my airport extreme, creating a new network, etc nothing seems to work.

I have a feeling you may be stuck in bridge mode there...
Factory reset the Extreme (so we don't second guess later), and re-set up the extreme using iOS5 on your iPhone.
Set up your Wi-Fi network with your iPad, iPhone, iPod touch, or Mac.

    If not:
iOS: Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings grayed out or dim
One user reported that placing the iPod in the freezer fixed the problem. A trick that works frequently with iPhones:
Settings > AirPlane Mode ON, Do Not Disturb ON
Power down and wait 5-10 minutes
    Power up
Settings > AirPlane Mode OFF, Do Not Disturb OFF
If not successful, an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store is usually in order.
Apple Retail Store - Genius Bar
    Then:
Try the following to rule out a software problem:
    - Reset the iOS device. Nothing will be lost
Reset iOS device: Hold down the On/Off button and the Home button at the same time for at
least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.
    - Power off and then back on the router
    - Reset network settings: Settings>General>Reset>Reset Network Settings
    - iOS: Troubleshooting Wi-Fi networks and connections
    - Wi-Fi: Unable to connect to an 802.11n Wi-Fi network
    - iOS: Recommended settings for Wi-Fi routers and access points
    - Restore from backup. See:
    iOS: How to back up
    - Restore to factory settings/new iOS device.
If still problem make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store since it appears you have a hardware problem.

How to enable your computer software firewall to "trust" the other computers on your network ---  this depends on which firewall you are using.   Check the "Help" in your computer software firewall.   In most firewalls there should be a "Network" or "Trust" tab or option.  Look in there.  To setup trust, most firewalls will need either (1) the "MAC address" of the computer (or router) that you want to trust, or (2) the LAN IP address of the computer or router, or (3) a range of LAN IP addresses to trust.
For option (1), you will need the MAC address of all computers on your network.
Option (2) usually works best if you need to specify your router ( at 192.168.1.1 ).  Note that the LAN address of computers can change.
Option (3) works well if it available because you can specify 192.168.1.0  thru  192.168.1.255 as the range to trust.
When you specify the computers and router to trust, specify each device just one way.  That is, do not list the LAN address and the MAC address of the same device, use one way or the other, but not both.
If you need more help, please specify your computer software firewall.

Do you mean to say you already have a wireless network setup and thought by buying the Airport Express you just could use it for wireless music alone?
The Airport Express is chiefly a wireless router first, with the wireless music and printing as extra's.
It can be used for streaming music alone, but I think it needs to talk to network time servers and thus it gets screwed up over time not being on the internet. Also by your using your computers wifi for music streaming, no internet with your other router.
So it's a all Airport Express or back to a stereo mini cable.

  • USB wireless internet card

i was told i could connect my USB wireless internet card to my time capsule, i created the network and need help figuring out how to get internet with the USB card.

    Welcome to the discussions, Diane!

Unfortunately, you received incorrect information. The USB port on the Time Capsule will only support a printer and/or hard drive. Modems are not supported.
