Wireless Printer Sharing Crashes Programs

I have a wireless network at home, with two Macbooks and a G5 connected to an HP 8200 Photosmart printer. The printer is shared, and my old G4 powerbook and iBook can print to them without issue. On the MacBooks, I can see the shared printer in the Print Dialog, but if I select one, I get the spinning pinwheel for about 30 seconds, and then the application suddenly quits. This has happened with several different applications.
I have tried the following:
* rebooting
* repairing permissions
* attempting to print from a "clean" test user account
* using Printer Setup Repair to completely reset the printing system
I called Apple today and after an hour on the phone with the woman, we got disconnected. We established that my Macbook can print on my HP 8200 Photosmart printer both when directly connected and, weirdly, just the once over my appletalk network. Otherwise, every program just crashes when I go to print. Very irritating and it happens on both of my Macbooks. If anyone out there has a solution, I'd love to hear it

I have a fix for the MacBook print button crashing
application programs.
You need to trash the existing HP printer folder (in
applications folder) and delete the printer profile
in the System Preferences/Print & Fax.
Once the old stuff is deleted, go to hp.com and
download and install the latest driver and/or
software and driver applications.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?lc=en&
cc=us〈=en&product=441245&dlc=en&os=219
The issue is the latest driver is coded Mac Universal
which works with the Intel architecture in the MB.
This fixed my print crashes. I have a HP 2570 series
all-in-one printer connected via AirPort.
For those of you not using HP printers, go to your
printer manufacturer's web site and check latest
driver availalbe for your printer. Most likely they
will have a newer MB compatible driver.
Good Luck!

Grape iMac, Mac 6100   Mac OS X (10.4.2)
I tried it. Deleted the HP stuff and the hp stuff in my Library/Printers folder. Installed the drivers from the HP website. Everything still crashes. Anyone else with an idea?

  • Nothing happens when I press PRINT via wireless printer sharing

I have Mac G5 and Mac Mini, both with Mac OS X 10.4.7, both with Airport Extreme cards connected wirelessly to my Linksys router. I have Printer Sharing enabled on the G5 and selected "shared HP printer" on the Mac Mini. Everything appears to be setup correctly. However, I display the Print... dialog on the Mac Mini and click OK and nothing happens. I can click until I'm blue in the face. Nothing happens when I click Preview either. This has been this way for a long time. I THINK, and I repeat, I THINK there was a known issue with this that was fixed in, say, 10.3.x, and I recall ONE TIME was I able to print. I'm trying to recall, but I think when I upgraded to 10.4 I'm back to nothing happening.
Any clues? I'm Mac savvy and, as far as I know, have everything set correctly--not that it should require much effort. Second, as a possible linked problem, similarly, when the Mac Mini sees the G5 in the Network Browser and I click "Connect..." the connection is made, then disconnected a few seconds later. So I'm thinking something may be hosed in the sharing department of the G5, but I wouldn't know what or where.
    Thanx for any assistance!

This thread may be of some help, though I am not completely sure if it applies to wireless printer sharing; it's the same symptom though:

Another possibility is to make sure the machines have the same version of the HP drivers.
    Hope this helps.

  • Wireless printer sharing with windows 7 and vista operating systems.

    hello can anyone help me?
i have a new HP pc with windows 7 OS, and have an epson PX710W 3in1 printer.
i want to connect a laptop with vista OS to share the printer (wireless set up).
the pc will print documents ok via wireless link, but when i power up the laptop it appears to inhibit the printing function (document will not print).
i have set up file/ print sharing but there is the problem. it appears to me that sharing is only possible between pc,s etc with windows 7 OS via the homegroup set up. Has  anyone encountered this problem at all, has anyone any ideas? or is it a configuration problem that i'm not aware of?

I found that I had issues with getting all of these to work - individually.  I have an XPPro (32) pc trying to print to Win7Ultimate printer - printer is shared with all settings wide open, works great with another 7 or Vista machine, but same errors
as above for XP.  I got it to work an old way, and then the "local port" way worked.  I don't really know why as yet, but I am investigating.
    My Solution -
    1. As stated in other posts, install the printer locally on the XP machine.  Make sure that it prints.
2. Connect the printer to the 7 machine, print a test, then change the file and print sharing options to "yes".  I also installed the "Universal Driver" for my printer - HP1200 Laserjet.
    3. Make sure that the Network type that the 7 machine sees is "Work" or "Home", not "Public". -  I don't know if this really  did anything or not, but I did make the change - mine thought the network was "Public".
    4. Go back to the XP machine, if you get errors when you add the "Local Port" as suggested, then do this -
    Warning Old Dos Trick -
         -  Open a Command Prompt, then type (without quotes) "net use Lpt1 \\COMPUTERNAME\PRINTERSHARE " - where "computername" is the name of the computer and sharename is the shared name of the printer
    on that computer.
        - you SHOULD see "command completed successfully", if not check to make sure that you have rights on the 7 machine.  Now you should be able to print a test page to the printer. CAUTION - it took awhile for the changes to
take, so you may have the hourglass looking at you for a few minutes. - Once you reboot this will not work as the connection is just for that session.
To explain: this command is the dos version of what happens when you re-route output to a different destination - thus any traffic to LPT1 goes to \\computername\sharename.
    5. After this worked, I then could add the "local port", as detailed earlier and had no errors.
    Hope this helps someone else!

  • Help!  Patch needed for printer?  Print function crashing programs...

I've had a HP PSC 2410 (an all-in-one) for a few years now--carried over from my PC days. When I got my Powerbook I installed the print-only driver from the HP website and have printed without incident. A couple of days ago I downloaded a driver for this printer which I believed would allow me all of my functionality but the installer has never run properly as my printer does not show up on the list available (none do) so I am unable to complete the guided walk-through. My printer is hooked up to my Airport Express. I have, under limited circumstances, been able to print occasionally since I've downloaded this new driver. More often than not however, whatever program I'm using and trying to print from crashes. Any ideas? I once spoke with an Apple employee who told me I could use this printer but would need a patch, I never thought about it again until this has been happening... Anyone know of such a patch and where to find it? Thanks.

  • Help with PC and Powerbook G4 wireless printer sharing

Help! I have two PC desktops, one PC laptop and one Powerbook G4. I have a Linksys wireless router, a cable modem, and a D-Link print server. All of the computers, including the mac are on a working home network. The Three PCs work great with print server, but I can not get the mac set up with the print server. I have talked to Apple, network magic (which I use both for the PC and mac) and D-Link. Can you tell me how I can set this up.

I have a very similar problem. I have 4 pcs and a G5 hooked into my wireless router and cable modem. All of the computers are working however, I cannot see my G5 on the network. I do have a printer hooked directly to the G5, but want it to work on the PCs as well. I am assuming that I need to share the Mac with the rest of the network, however, I went to system preferences and I noticed that I do not have a sharing button at all on the list, I know that it is supposed to be under Internet & Network. I am brand new to the Mac world and have no idea of why it is not there. Is this something that I have to load from the software? Thanks for any help you may be able to share.

  • Wireless printer sharing- Verizon only has automated help-or any help- for windows. i have a mac.

i have a new Brother 490CW which instructs me to "push the WiFi protected set up button" on the router. the Verizon supplied router Ultraline series only has on/off power button.  Verizon's help is abysmal.  The automated response sends me back the the help for windows.  can anyone tell me how to set up this printer as wireless?
    thanks.

Pretty good directions here : http://www.brother-usa.com/support/wireless/Step1.aspx?ProductID=MFC-490CW
You'll find the SSID (ESSID) + WEP key on a sticker on the Verizon-supplied router.

  • Print to LaserJet 2200d via a wireless print-sharing computer?

I would like to share an HP LaserJet 2200d over a wireless connection to other clients on the network. The 2200d coonnects to my G4 via USB (no JetDirect card). The G4 is a wireless node on the network. All OSX nodes are 10.3.9.
The printer works fine for the direct connect G4, but it doesn't show up at other machines in the Printer Utility display of available printers.
Can this be done? It would appear that one can print to a 2200 via USB to an Airport Express device, so why won't it work through a spooling client?
    Thanks in advance (I hope)

I have run Printer Setup Repair on the G3 (10.3.9) and all the various repair sequences. (e.g. repair file permissions)
I have made a wired connection for the host and the G3 still doesn't see it. I have tried nearly every connecting option offered in Setup Utility. (AppleTalk, IP Printing, LPR, JetDirect, Rendezvous)
I can ping the host machine from the G3.
A laptop trunning 10.4.x can print to the 2200 just fine, via its own WiFi connection to the network. On that machine, the 2200 shows up in Printer Setup Utility under 'default browser' and shows up in the Printer List properly attributed to its host machine.

  • Can I set up wireless internet and a wireless printer at the same time?

I have an AirPort Express configured already which allows wireless access to the internet (as it is connected to my broadband router) but can I also configure it to allow wireless printer sharing at the same time?
I would appreciate an answer on this as I have been unable to determine it so far.
    Many thanks

The Express has a single Ethernet port, whereas, the Extreme has four would be one of most distinguishing feature differences. Obviously size differences would be #1. (ref: Identifying AirPort Hardware)
When connected directly another router, you have (effectively) two routers in series. In this configuration, the AirPort Express would need to be reconfigured as a bridge. This will allow the broadband router to provide both NAT & DHCP services for all the wired/wireless clients connected to either router.

  • Printing from iPad to any shared wireless printer

Did anyone else lose the AirPrint capability on a brother wireless printer as i did when I upgraded to ios5?
The error message is "no AirPrint printers found".

    Swim2500-
If you happened to be using the Print n Share App on your iPad, upgrading to iOS 5 stopped it from being accessible from within other Apps unless they have the "Open In" option.
If you were sharing your computer's printer as AirPrint over WiFi, you may need to re-install the AirPrint Activator program, or find an updated version.

  • Sharing Linksys Wireless Print Server with MAC and PC - How to do?

I have lost the capability to share a printer on my network by using the Linksys Wireless Print Server-model number WPS54G -V2. Prior to having to return my previous Print Server on an RMA, I was able to use the MAC and PCs on my network. I have a PowerGook G4 with MacOS X 10.4.10. I also have a Airport Extreme Base Station V5.6. The printer on the network that is being shared is an Epson Stylus Photo 820. Recently, when trying to reconfigure the network, I updated the software on the Airport Extreme...so I think after that, I am no longer able to share this printer using current network configuration. As information, I will share how I got the network to share the printer BEFORE I had to replace the previous Print Server and BEFORE I updated the Airport Extreme. Please see this link:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20050406151311940
Even though this was for a different type of Print Server, this worked for me.
When reconfiguring the new Print Server, I contacted Linksys...as had some difficulty until I found out how to assign a static IP to the new Print Server. When trying to talk to them about the Mac issue, and sharing the printer, they shared this link with me...which may be helpful to some, but I found that this does not work for me...
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20060404021600193
I have been trying to work through the issue, but feel I may now have some compatibility issues between the Airport Extreme and the Epson printer.
Further details are that I use 10.0.1.78 for the assigned IP address for the Print server. My router (which is the Airport address) is 10.0.1.1. I have tried IPP printing option, LPD printing option...and IPP printing at least returns a status on the Print Server as "printing" as opposed to "idle". I have checked the Print status on the Mac, and I have received two (2) different error messages as to why the print job failed. They are:
"the process "picwpstops" stopped unexpectedly with status 1"
    and
"the process "rastertoprinter" stopped unexpectedly with status 1"
The latter happens when I follow the instructions on the second link I attached on this topic...with the only change being that I select IPP printing as opposed to LPD printing.
Anyone that has any insight into HOW to configure the mysterious settings for Mac OS printing so that it can be compatible with a Wireless Print Server, please feel free to comment. In the meantime, I am thinking that the links above could help some people...just not me at this point given my current configuration and versions of software/firmware and perhaps the printer I am using.
Greatly appreciate your consideration, and any suggestions to anyone that might understand what these error messages mean when checking the printer status after sending a file for printing.
    Thank you

    1. No, you don't have to make a bootable clone.
    2. If you use the drive for a bootable backup, then you cannot use the drive for other types of storage unless you partition the drive and make more than one volume.
    3. No, it will not try to boot the computer. You must designate the startup volume using Startup Disk preferences.
If you wish to use the drive on both a Mac and a PC, then either you make two partitions - one for Mac and the other for the PC or you must format the entire drive using FAT32 so the drive can be used for read//write by both operating systems. If you do this then you cannot use the drive for a bootable backup nor can you use it with Time Machine.
FAT32 is slower for read/write on the Mac than using Mac formatting.
Optimally, I would suggest you partition the drive into two volumes. One volume formatted for the Mac and the other formatted FAT32.
You can send files from a PC to a Mac and vice-versa using File Sharing. Select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "file sharing" or "sharing" to find help articles. Also see,

  • Printing to a Shared Printer in Classic programs

I searched for an answer to this and could not find anything so I am going to appeal for help. I have a Color LaserJet connected via USB to a G4 machine that is sharing the printer. The sharing works fine, all of my machines can access it. The problem occurs when users try to print from some of the older programs that we have that run in Classic mode. When we try and print from these programs, I cannot find the shared printer. I tried to access it via the chooser but had no luck. I will admit that I am not very familiar in navigating or using Classic or any version of OS9 so it is very possible that I am missing something very easy, but I would much apppriciate it if someone could point out what that is. Thanks!!
    Joe

You need to install printer drivers on the Classic side for the printer you are using. Your Classic installation also needs to have the necessary extensions for USB installed. The following may also help:

    Which OS is installed?
I recommend that you uninstall the printer software from the HP folder in start-->All Programs -->HP --> uninstall software
After the uninstall is completed and your system restarted install and configure the printer again.

  • File and Print Sharing over wireless

    I have the following hardware:
MBP - Brand spanking new kickin' machine running 10.4.x
G4-400 - old but still doing nicely running 10.3.9
    PC running XP
MBP has the extreme card built in
G4-400 has a third party wireless card that's been working for 2 years
PC has a netgear wireless card
    Router is a netgear WR814v2 wireless B
Facts: Before I bought the MBP last week, I could access files between my G4 and PC fine over my network and access the web at the same time. When I connected the MBP to the network, I could surf. When i tried to turn on filesharing, it works for a short time, but then knocks the network offline. The model still shows a connection and my router still broadcasts and the wireless cards all get the signal, but nothing connects.
To troubleshoot the issues, this is what I've done so far:
When it went down, the first thing I did was turn file and print sharing off on both of the macs, restarted and tried the connection. Again, model still shows logged in, but no connection. Then i plugged the PC into the ethernet port on the router to get a wired line. Still no connection on the PC. Next, I shut down the macs, disabled the wireless on the PC and restarted the PC. Still no connection through the ethernet port even though the model and router still show all signs good. Also, through all this, I couldn't log into the router's IP address once I was wired to it. Next I shut down the router and modem, waited, then turned on the modem, waited for it to cycle to ready, then turned on the router. The modem showed that it was connected, then the router showed wireless broadcasting. Then I had my connection to the web back.
I then went back to square one and tried file sharing again and again everything locked up. It seems like some how the file sharing between the macs is confusing the router. I tried fixing the ip address that the router assigns to each machine, but that didn't solve the problem. I'm at my knowledge's end. What am I doing wrong here? My goal is to share files at least between the macs and print through the G4 which has a USB and a Firewire printer attached. I'd like to accomplish the filesharing while still being able to access the web. But for some reason, I can the file sharing up and running for a short time, but then everything falls apart and locks up.
MBP   Mac OS X (10.4.6)   G4-400 and PC also on network

I figured out the networking mess - the secret, don't follow the instructions on the apple site - listen only to everyone in this discussion. I kept following the instructions to turn on appletalk and that's what was tying everything up. When I just use the sharing preference panel without going into the network preference panel, all is good in the world. I can now view all three computers with their shared folders(enhanced by sharepoint for a couple of external drives) and also print from all machines to the printers hooked up to the G4.
