Wireless Printer Suggestions

My Xerox 8400N printer just died requiring an expensive service call to get it up and running and I'm reluctant to spend the $$$ .. I've tried 2 so-called wireless printers (HP) but neither one can be see on the network (using an Airport Extreme with my iMac and an older iBook) .. I know I did everything correctly ...
the Xerox always worked flawlessly
Any suggestions on printers under $200 that will definitely work? Inkjets are OK

I like the "HP OfficeJet 6500 Wireless All-in-One Printer, Copier, Scanner, Fax" http://store.apple.com/us/product/TV577LL/A it's very easy to set up. you just download the latest software on the HP website. install it. after the computer reboots, it will ask you to set up the printer. just plug the printer into the computer. the hp setup assistant it will ask if you want the printer to be wired or wireless. chose wireless, tell it to join your wireless network.
BUt if you already have an HP printer with wireless printing built in. I would call 1-800-hp-invent. it's a 24 hour free hotline to call. they should be able to help you setup your printer. Every time i've called them the wait time was under 5 minutes. Most of the time it was less then 2 minutes.

This procedure is a diagnostic test. It’s unlikely to solve your problem. Don’t be disappointed when you find that nothing has changed after you complete it.
The purpose of the test is to determine whether the problem is caused by third-party software that loads automatically at startup or login, by a peripheral device, by a font conflict, or by corruption of the file system or of certain system caches.
Disconnect all wired peripherals except those needed for the test, and remove all aftermarket expansion cards, if applicable. Start up in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. You must hold down the shift key twice: once when you turn on the computer, and again when you log in.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t do this. Ask for further instructions.
Safe mode is much slower to start up and run than normal, with limited graphics performance, and some things won’t work at all, including sound output and Wi-Fi on certain models. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually login automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
Test while in safe mode. Same problem?
After testing, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and verify that you still have the problem. Post the results of the test.

I was able to print from my iPad to my wireless HP printer and now I can't.  Any suggestions on what to do to get it back?  Will resetting network settings help?

Are you getting any error messages - or is it just saying No Printers Found - if the latter this has happened to me - I have 2 networks on my airport express (my network and one for guest access0 - sometimes my iPad switches to the guest network which does not have wireless printer on it ( i dont know why it does this) - if i switch the iPad back to my network the printer shows up again
In fact see the No Printers Found message is a pretty good indication that the iPad has switched to the guest network

  • HP webservices tab not available when using HP Jetdirect 2700w wireless print server

I recently bought HP Laserjet Enterprise 500 m551 dn color laser printer with HP jetdirect 2700w wireless print server ( one day old at this time).
I was able to configure the device and enable/ use eprint services using the embedded server with a wired connection.
However when I attach a the mentioned wireless print server, the "Webservices" tab disappears from the configuration website, the printer reports that the eprint services are not enabled and ofcourse hp eprint or google cloud print do not work. The printer appears offline at eprintcenter. Everything else works fine.
On the product website for the wireless server, it clearly states that this is compatible with eprint services.

  • HP 7510 AIO printer won't stay connected - Wired workstation, wireless printer

Hi!  I spoke (and checked solution button) too soon. The printer still "disappears" from the Wired XP network workstation. The only difference since applying the solution given is that the disconnects are now happening about every 12 hours, vs every couple of hours.
Ink notification is set to "only when I print"
Static IP is set for all machines
HNDU works -- when the printer is visible but will hang the workstation if printer is not visible.

    Printer: HP 7510
Network:  multi-station wireless, thru DLink DI-632 (one PC hardwired to router)
Address Config:   Printer is using static IP -- outside of DCHP range (192.168.15.240)
Printer Config: Each computer has static IP set into the control panel app, using IP addressing.
Operating System:  XP (Service Pack 3)
Other devices:  Ipad, Xoom and Kindle Fire (all working using ePrint)
Network Security Protocol: WEP (we're out in the country)
Network Setup:  Main router, along with 2 access ports (hardwired); currently using channels 1, 5 and 11 (again, we're in the country and have little competition for channels)
File Sharing: All machines in network have one open "share" drive, accessable with passwork.
Scenario:  Wireless computers appear to stay connected for several days to a week at a time. (We reboot weekly, just as a SOP)
Computer that is wired to the network loses communication with the printer a couple of times a day and needs to be rebooted in order to restore connection.
When this happens, other machines continue to print and scan, with no problems, and the wired machine continues to have its name displayed in the SCANNING panel on the printer -- but the printer won't talk to it.   All network functions, including internet and intranet access to the printer's EWS is still available.  I have noticed that if I go into check ink levels, though, that the ink check software behaves differently.
Normally in the ink status app, there is a small "working" icon with 6 dots. When this computer is connected properly, it will start jumping around the circle, showing activitiy, get to 41%, and then display the ink status info.  When the printer/computer connection is not working, the "working" icon will go to just a couple of percent then jump to the printer information page, showing make, model, serial number, firmware level etc.
In every instance so far, rebooting (with no other action) brings the printer/computer connection back to life -- until next time.  I am trying to find any other pattern for this behavior, just can't identify it yet.
I started out with the plain vanilla installation, but then every computer in the network would consistently drop connections, about every 45 minutes. Using the info on this forum, I've eliminated the drop-outs for those printers, and got to the Static IP solutions (we've done that anyway for years with net-ready machines).  This is the last machine that "drops off"  It appears that some piece of HP-required software is "dropping out" or getting clobbered, but I cannot see a pattern, even checking and noting the various software used locally on the machine, and the various websites visited. So far, no pattern.
I am hoping that an HP guru with access to the source for the "ink supply" status software can take a look at what is happening and why it will always go to 41% and then display ink status (when connected) and then only go a couple of percent and display the ink status (when it isn't connected).
    Thanks, in advance,
    jim

    More info:
In last paragraph, above, the request for "ink status" is returned with a static display of the printer firmware version, driver version, step level, MAC# etc of the printer, not "ink status" when the printer is disconnected.
Also, when printer is disconnected the HP home networking utility will hang the system -- a hard reboot is required, which restores the printer, until the next time it goes "into the woods".  Signal stregth, measured on the printer, is 4 bars (very good).

Thanks!  That appears to solve the problem.  After your suggestion, I remembered that I set the "ink level warning" on this machine ONLY to "Always warn me", as opposed to "tell me only when I am printing".  That seemed to be the problem. Only the computer that was set to "always warn on low ink-levels" was disconnecting -- the others worked fine! Now, all are working fine.
Just to be safe, though, I've also turned off the "scan from printer to computer" function on each computer. That was set for each machine, and seemed to work fine. The other machines in the network did not disconnect, and the printer was tracked whether each computer was on or off.   May try to turn it on later; I'll see if the family uses that feature very often!
    Thank you for your help.

I spoke too soon!  After about 26 hours, the printer connection on the one "hard-wired" CPU dropped, which is better than before, but still not solid.  Same exact symptoms as before. Only piece of the puzzle that was different this time is about 50 pages were scanned, some to this computer.  Used the "Scan requested from CPU" process, rather than enabling the "Scan TO Cpu" function in the software app.  It did not drop the connection immediately after -- about 1 hour to 1.5 hours afterwards.  Suspect this is a coincidence, not a cause of the problem with this machine.
I also scanned (same approach) from one other CPU on the network -- that wifi connection is still rock-solid.

I think it is fixed now.....the problem seems to reside in the module that will notify you immediately if ink is low (vs notify me only when printing).  If, when initially installed, the user selects "immediately", then the printer will randomly disappear. (More on "re-finding it" later.)
Also, it is difficult to change the ink notification setting, because it appears not to be "sticky", but will sometimes, flip. (I've not figured this out yet).  As long as the setting for "low ink notification" is on "only when printing", life is good.
If the printer does disappear, go over to the Advanced tab when the printer software/firmware page comes up, instead of the current ink levels.  Reset the selection about "tell me about ink notification" to "only when printing", and then toggle the "autoshut off" from "NEVER" to "2 hours" and then, finally, back to "NEVER".  Then, lastly, press closed on the panel.  Printer should be connected again. To test, go to the Photosmart 7510 app again, and select "Show estimated ink levels".  The counter will start at 1%, jump to 41% and then bounce around until it displays the ink level.
FOR HP TECH:  Please consider making the "ink level notification" persistent in the registry OR provide a de-install tool that will completely clean all traces of the prior installation of the 7510 driver / app in the registry, so that a new install may have this setting saved correctly.
Hope this helps some of you -- it's an excellent printer once its running!

  • Problem consistently printing via new (summer 2011) AIRPORT EXTREME BASE STATION and Brother wireless printer (model HL5370DW). What am I doing wrong?

Thanks in advance for any help you folks can offer. I'm a newb here and will try to offer as much detail as I can about the dilemma at hand.
Scenario: Home network has been recently set up for wireless internet access via NEW Airport Extreme Base Station (purchased September 2011). Units accessing the network include: 2011 Macbook Pro, 2011 Macbook Air, 2007 Macbook, 2009 Macbook Pro, 2 iPhone 3GSs, and a 1st-gen iPad (and a partridge in a pear tree AEBS is configured to run WPA2 encrypted network, as well as a WPA2 guest network. I am attempting to yoke a BROTHER HL5370DW wireless B or G/ ethernet / usb-capable printer to the main network such that any and all units can print wirelessly or its equivalent (i.e., via printer hooked to AEBS through USB hub)
Problem: Despite configuring the Brother printer to recognize the main WPA2 network I created, I am unable to get wireless printing to work. My workaround was to physically connect Brother printer to AEBS via USB, specifically using a Belkin USB hub (after all, I wanted access to usb drives, as well as the printer). This workaround works ONLY SOME OF THE TIME. Generally, after a fresh boot of any computer or after a restart of the AEBS, any given computer will be able to print (i.e., any computer wirelessly connected to the main WPA2 network recognizes the printer). HOWEVER, at random times, printer access is gone (as is access to USB drives connected to AEBS's usb hub). Wireless networks are still up and running when that happens. IS THERE A WAY TO GET THE USB HUB's devices (i.e., printer and usb drives) to ALWAYS REMAIN AVAILABLE AS LONG AS THEY STAY CONNECTED TO THE AEBS? In other words, what accounts for the intermittent loss of the usb peripherals?
Sometimes, I just shut the airport off on whatever computer is having this problem, and the problem goes away. Sometimes, the problem is present across all computers in the house, sometimes only a few are affected. I can ALWAYS see the AEBS in the Airport Utility if the AEBS is connected to the particular computer via ETHERNET CABLE.
    My theories:
    - true wireless printing (i.e., without usb hub workaround) doesn't work because the N network somehow isn't backwards compatible with the Brother printer, which, i believe, is B/G. Although...isn't Wireless N networking supposed to work with BG devices? I did find a thread (https://discussions.apple.com/thread/2570774?start=0&tstart=0 ) that explains some of the particulars of WPA2 encryption and Wireless B/G issues, but it was beyond my level of comprehension (I'm a psychologist, but not an Apple Genius
    - The usb workaround is only intermittently viable because of some flaw in the Airport or Airport Utility that causes dropouts to happen when a Macbook Pro or Air's lid gets closed or one gets opened after having been at a different network (e.g., at my office).
    QUESTIONS:
    - Should I try to use my old router (7 year old Linksys WRT54G) as an access point and connect the Brother printer to that G-router? How do I do that?
    - I wouldn't mind just relying on the usb hub method if I could just insure more consistency (i.e., no random dropouts of peripherals). How could I do this?
    Rule out:
    - wireless printing works on my printer - it was being recognized back before the AEBS. I had the Linksys router running a WEP network and had the wireless printer talking with no cables to the router and the computers. (I just don't want to revert to using WEP encryption given its lack of security and my trying to protect HiPAA related health information on behalf of patients)
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks in advance!

    13 ASCII characters = 104 (aka 128)-bit WEP
    encryption
If turning off WEP works, then you just need to
provide the cameras with the "Equivalent Network Password".
One of the problems with WEP is that the actual
standard relies on a 10 character HEX key for 40bit
WEP and a 26 character HEX key for 128bit WEP.
In order to make things easier, vendors use certain
algorithms to convert simple alphanumeric passwords
(or passphrases) into HEX keys, thus enabling the use
of simple easy to remember WEP password rather than
lengthy HEX keys. The problem is that different
vendors use different algorithms to generate the HEX
key and therefore a ASCII password on an AEBS will be
hashed differently on a non-Apple client and vice
    versa.
You may find the following article helpful:
    - Apple article, especially the part about
    "Third-party client to Airport".
Brilliant idea about trying the system with No encryption on... that DID solve the problem... almost.. once I turned off the encryption option, and restarted the Airport, I got a dialog box showing that the "Base station needs attention" but it didn't indicate WHAT kind of "assistance" it needed. Nonetheless, I closed out of the Airport program only to find that the indicator light, which had been Green, was now, flashing Yellow and I could not connect anything, including my computer. I opened the Airport program again and found the ONLY way I could get the Green light on was to select some sort of encryption option... then the light would go Green again but my cameras would not hook up again, and when I went back in and ONLY changed the option to NO encryption, I got the yellow flashing light and the "this base unit needs attention" warning...
I think your suggestions are almost on the mark... is there any way of reconciling the WEP coding between the cameras and the Airport??? Or turning off the encryption option and STILL have Airport work?
Thanks again for your help and suggestions... I really appreciate it.

  • Sharing Linksys Wireless Print Server with MAC and PC - How to do?

I have lost the capability to share a printer on my network by using the Linksys Wireless Print Server-model number WPS54G -V2. Prior to having to return my previous Print Server on an RMA, I was able to use the MAC and PCs on my network. I have a PowerGook G4 with MacOS X 10.4.10. I also have a Airport Extreme Base Station V5.6. The printer on the network that is being shared is an Epson Stylus Photo 820. Recently, when trying to reconfigure the network, I updated the software on the Airport Extreme...so I think after that, I am no longer able to share this printer using current network configuration. As information, I will share how I got the network to share the printer BEFORE I had to replace the previous Print Server and BEFORE I updated the Airport Extreme. Please see this link:
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20050406151311940
Even though this was for a different type of Print Server, this worked for me.
When reconfiguring the new Print Server, I contacted Linksys...as had some difficulty until I found out how to assign a static IP to the new Print Server. When trying to talk to them about the Mac issue, and sharing the printer, they shared this link with me...which may be helpful to some, but I found that this does not work for me...
    http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20060404021600193
I have been trying to work through the issue, but feel I may now have some compatibility issues between the Airport Extreme and the Epson printer.
Further details are that I use 10.0.1.78 for the assigned IP address for the Print server. My router (which is the Airport address) is 10.0.1.1. I have tried IPP printing option, LPD printing option...and IPP printing at least returns a status on the Print Server as "printing" as opposed to "idle". I have checked the Print status on the Mac, and I have received two (2) different error messages as to why the print job failed. They are:
"the process "picwpstops" stopped unexpectedly with status 1"
    and
"the process "rastertoprinter" stopped unexpectedly with status 1"
The latter happens when I follow the instructions on the second link I attached on this topic...with the only change being that I select IPP printing as opposed to LPD printing.
Anyone that has any insight into HOW to configure the mysterious settings for Mac OS printing so that it can be compatible with a Wireless Print Server, please feel free to comment. In the meantime, I am thinking that the links above could help some people...just not me at this point given my current configuration and versions of software/firmware and perhaps the printer I am using.
Greatly appreciate your consideration, and any suggestions to anyone that might understand what these error messages mean when checking the printer status after sending a file for printing.
    Thank you

    1. No, you don't have to make a bootable clone.
    2. If you use the drive for a bootable backup, then you cannot use the drive for other types of storage unless you partition the drive and make more than one volume.
    3. No, it will not try to boot the computer. You must designate the startup volume using Startup Disk preferences.
If you wish to use the drive on both a Mac and a PC, then either you make two partitions - one for Mac and the other for the PC or you must format the entire drive using FAT32 so the drive can be used for read//write by both operating systems. If you do this then you cannot use the drive for a bootable backup nor can you use it with Time Machine.
FAT32 is slower for read/write on the Mac than using Mac formatting.
Optimally, I would suggest you partition the drive into two volumes. One volume formatted for the Mac and the other formatted FAT32.
You can send files from a PC to a Mac and vice-versa using File Sharing. Select Mac Help from the Finder's Help menu and search for "file sharing" or "sharing" to find help articles. Also see,

  • Can I set up a wireless printer as a network printer and not use Airport?

I have a HP Photosmart Plus wireless printer set up in my network for use by several iPods, iPads, and iPhones.   I have an iMac running 10.6.8 that I want to set it up on, but to use it as a regular network printer, not using Airport.  Is this possible?  I haven't been able to hit on the right combination of settings.  I have a Samsung laser printer that works this way, and an Epson that is attached to an Airport Express, but all I get on the HP is garbage.  It will work when I set it up using the HP install disk, but I have to use Airport and I don't always get a good signal where the iMac is located.  I would prefer to use  the wired connection to my router and access the HP's IP address, like a wired network printer.     Any suggestions?

I'm using a Canon printer here which is networked via my Airport Express.  My printer cannot be Wi fi enabled simultaneousely with an ethernet cable connection. It is either or.  I realise that this doesn't fully answer your question, but I just wanted to give you a clue.  You'd need to consult your owners manual, or HP to get a definitive answer.
If you want to use the HP printer printer only with the wired ethernet connection to your router, that should be no problem as long as it is ethernet capable.
After setting it up for wired ethernet capability, you will need through the sequence of powering your router down, and resetting you Lan network so the router and printer can pick up their respective IP assignments.

    Hi,
I'm not familiar with the activate access control so I wont be able to help you with that.
Have you installed the HP eprint app and tried to print from within the HP eprint app? I think the HP eprint app is your best hope for wireless printing from your device.
If both the printer and phone are on the same network, you should be able to see the printer within the app and print to it.

  • Wireless printing in a non-internet enviroment

I recently purchased a HP Laserjet Pro P1102w, because I need to print in a location that doesn't have wireless, but does have cellular (and thus I get internet through a tethered cell phone).
The printer easily went onto cloudless printing at my home on my DSL wireless, and I have full configuration power thru USB or 192.168... ...
The problems arise when I remove the home DSL wireless. I've tried two solutions:
    1) tether the printer to my cell phone, and use cloud print like normal. Incredibly slow, but would accomplish what I needed.
    2) wirelessly Direct Print to the printer from my chromebook (or cell phone).
    1) Tethering the printer to the cell phone:
All of my other devices [(apple laptop - where the tether shows up under the wireless icon as a device, but the apple laptop connects just fine), chromebook and first gen iPad] connect to the cell phone no problem .
Can't get the printer to associate to save my life. No encryption, using Barnacle Wi-fi on a T-Mobile HTC One.
Even when the cell phone is broadcasting its SSID, the SSID does not show up under the available wireless networks list on the printer configuration webpage, and if I add it manually, it doesn't work.
    2) Direct wireless printing:
So I thought a better solution would be to use Direct Wireless Printing. No problem, all my devices happily associate with the printer and print fine, when I'm at home and the printer booted up associated with my home wireless DSL.
As soon as I take away the home wireless DSL, the printer's web server, DHCP server et. al.  become inaccessable.
The printer's wireless light (blue LED) blinks endlessly when booting up, and never becomes solid. It's like the printer needs an overarching wireless network to get its own DCHP information from, and only then will it become a working print server/DHCP server on its own.
Is this a bug? Known behavior? It seems the whole point of Direct Wireless Printing (like IR printing before it) would be to print without an external network.
Any thoughts? A solution I haven't tried? A trick to get the printer to associate with a tethered cell phone, or a way around the Direct Wireless Printing problem?

    Hi allochthon,
HP wireless direct printing is a feature that allows you to print directly to your HP printer without a network, using a direct peer to peer wireless connection. You can use this feature on a Laptop/Desktop or mobile device.
From the Laptop/Desktop or mobile device you connect directly to the printer's network and be able to print.
Since you would be connected directly to the printer's network and not your network, you wouldn't have the internet access until disconnecting from the printer's network and connecting back to your network again.
Using the printer with a tethered cell phone may or may not work. Most likely it would be very intermediate.
I would suggested connecting to the network, then finding your print jobs, then reconnect back to the printer's wireless direct and then printing them in this kind of environment.
If you had a router and connected the printer to that network, you could have all the devices connected to the same network name and be able to print and also be on the internet at the same time and print also.
If the Wireless Direct isn't enabled on the printer, then uninstall and reinstall the printer software on the Laptop, during the installing select to Enable the Wireless Direct.
    Thank You.

  • I can't add an older airport express to OS 10.7.5? Want to use for wireless printing and iTunes.

I'm using an Airport Extreme model A 1301 for my home's wireless network. I have three of the older Airport Express model A1084, which I was using for remote speakers for iTunes and for a wireless printer set up, but discontinued using them at some point. I currently have OS 10.7.5, and I could have sworn I was using that OS the last time I used the A1084s, but maybe I updated to it afterwards, I can't remember. At any rate, I've plugged one of the units in, look for it in Airport Utility, and get a message "this version of airPort Utility doesn't support this base station. Use airPort Utility 5.6 to configure or manage this base station. AirPort Utility 5.6 is available at AirPort Service and Support." I go there, download the program, install it, and get a message "The installation failed. The installer encountered an error that caused the installation to fail. Contact the software manufacturer for assistance." Am I in a catch-22 here - am I not able to use the older A1084s because I need airPort Utility 5.6, but I can't use airPort Utility 5.6 because I have OS 10.7.5? Does this mean I may as well throw these older A1084s away?

If you have not already done so, I suggest that your start over on the AirPort Expess "from scratch" by performing a Factory Default Reset and then attempt to configure it to join the network again.
Resetting an AirPort Base Station or Time Capsule FAQ
If you have an older Express, make sure that you are not trying to configure it to connect to the 5 GHz network, as it is unable to do so.
Assuming that the name of the wireless network, wireless security setting and password on the Express match up with the AirPort Extreme, the Express should "join" the network if it is working correctly.
If you are still having problems, all that you really can do is try the default reset a few more times. If still no luck, the Express....which is at least 5-6 years old or older, may likely need to be replaced with a new model.
